Preparations for World Rivers Day begun a few weeks ago.
The event is celebrated annually on the last Sunday of September, in this case it will be held on September 26. The local theme for this year’s celebration is “Where have our 365 rivers gone?”.
According to a press release, the main focus will be in the Carib Territory. However, the World Rivers Day Committee Chairman Fr. Franklyn Cuffy is encouraging groups and river enthusiasts to have a day of action for rivers in their communities.
Nature Enhancement Team, the Community Turtle Group in Rosalie, is hosting a river awareness this Saturday, September 25 beginning at 10 am. Sessions on water safety, environmental effects of litter, swimming lessons, kayaking, turtle nest excavating and beach cleaning are planned, ending around 4 pm.
Come enjoy this beautiful, peaceful, rainforested area of Dominica.
Education can help with understanding our rivers and knowing how to keep them vivbrant!
A DAY OF ACTION FOR OUR RIVERS in Dominica is picking up momentum. Almost twenty (20) groups are partnering with the “WORLD RIVERS DAY COMMITTEE” to clean, plant trees, give a lecture at school, share their experiences, or simply have a Family picnic, while others are planning a walk or hike.
Please let us know what your group intends to do for a DAY OF ACTION for our Rivers.
What began thirty (30) years in British Columia, Canada. by Mr Mark Angelo, was endorsed by the United Nation in 2005. And today WORLD RIVERS DAY is celebrated internationally every last Sunday in September.
The Rivers have gone because in the saying…Action brings Reaction..!! most D/cans have lost the appreciation for Nature, in particular our Rivers…so the Rivers went where they are apprciated…down to lower levels of the Earth to cool our lava, which if the people continue not to appreciate may cause 365 lava rivers instead…that’s where our Rivers went…don’t forget that D/ca cooling the entire eastern caribbean arc…Protect, Respect and Love our Rivers…especially those the eyes can now see…and pray those that “went away” are cooling Jah anger
To all the idiots commenting:
Last year Titiwi Fest held on the occasion of World Rivers Day was the BOMB!
I hope they organise the same activity again. The weather was great, hospitality excellent, titiwi accra delicious, music was clean, and the beach -spacious and clean. Wonderful family event.
I wasn’t a fan of World Rivers Day but I am looking forward to it this year thanks to a great Titiwi Fest last year.
Sometimes i wonder who are those dummies comming up with those stupid ideas.River day my a**.U have to protect ur rivers first before u can have a river day.Nothing has been done to protect d/a rivers absolutely nothing. When comes to enviromental affairs d/a back in 1910.
World Rivers Day, just another activity. Where were the members of that committee when Planning Division gave the French Businessman license to build the asphalt plant close to our most beautiful River in Dominica? Did the priest give support to the Layou Improvement Committee in their struggle to preserve their environment and protect their health? Or did he and others side with the Govt. and Planning Division against the villagers and the Layou Committee? The Plant is belching cancer-causing pollutants daily, affecting the same River, the villagers, the TITIWE and God knows what. Father Cuffy should be the first to mobilize Dominicans against that irresponsible act by Planning Division and Govt. Christian teachings condemn such actions which destroy our environment.
Where were they when Govt. allowed Petro Caribe to build fuel tanks on the banks of the Belfast River? Another one of our lovely Rivers? The priest and others hardly said anything. They were Moo Moo. So who cares about protecting our Rivers? So be real. When the authorities do things or attempt to build projects next to our Rivers, you all should advocate strongly to prevent those wickedness. Buffer zones must be established to protect our rivers. Now all you talking about World Rivers Day and TITIWE and …………. Pure hypocrisy. Condemn at all times Govt. negative actions that would adversely affect our Rivers and environment. No excuses for your silence because silence is consent. The damages have already been done right under your noses.
the rivers were afected in 1979 by huricane david and they have’nt recover the huricane distroyed the forest it also dry up the rivers it will take years without a huricane for the rivers to recover
Isle of beauty, Isle of splendour – nature at its best – God bless my beautiful country!
