Primary school students learning more about weather and climate impact

The Met Services in Dominica has embarked upon an educational drive throughout March targeting various primary schools.

The new initiative is in keeping with the observance of World Meteorological Day by the World Meteorological Organization.

Acting Met Officer Janelle McPherson informed that today information will be presented to pupils on ‘Weather and Climate and how they impact on our daily lives’.

The World Meteorological Organization will celebrate 60 years of existence and has chosen as the theme for this years’ celebration; ‘60 years of service for your safety and well-being’, according to McPherson.

“Weather and climate impact our health, food supply, housing, the clothing we wear, transportation, sports among others. It is therefore important to educate and inform the young ones on these realities and how they can protect themselves from the negative effects,” she said.

She said so far 16 primary schools have been visited and this week officers will visit the Atkinson, Concord, Trafalgar and Wotten Waven Primary Schools.

Later today, pupils will have the opportunity to call and answer questions relating to weather and climate and win prizes.

Times have changed. Back in my primary school days, you could only tell the weather by watching the clouds suddenly turn dark and the sun disappears, and the folks run out to the backyard to pick up their clothes on the lines drying.
