Strange fish washes ashore at Purple Turtle Beach

Curios onlookers gather around the dead fish. Photo by Joanna Benjamin-Wallace

Dominica News Online has learnt that a huge fish washed ashore at the Purple Turtle Beach in Portsmouth earlier today.

Residents said it washed ashore about 3:00 this afternoon and when they converged on the scene they realized it was bleeding from the side of its head and was already dead.

The residents speculate that the creature is a whale but Dominica News Online is unable to confirm this.

DNO is trying to get more information on this matter.

we have to ask our selves a question. wat caused the mutation of this strange fish? and what cause it death. please bring it to the lab for autopsy.and find out the real cause and the specie of the creature.for the past few days fishes have been washing up to our shores. Is there something going on under the water that we dont know about? are the fishes running away from something terrible? please investigate the matter about fishes on our shores.

Get a life son.. This is a deep sea fish.. we dont see much of thee fishes because they stay way under the water where it is cold..This fish must have gotten with a fight with a shark or squid. Look up rear strange fishes on google and you would be amazed by all the un heard species that thrive deep under the waters. Once in a while some wash up to shore.. This is not a whale ppl.. this is not a mutation this is a species we have not really seen but lives deep under the sea. Get a life and stop the conspiracy bull crap.

yes it mutated i was told because the tale was cut off i was told.whether that happened before it came ashore i dont know. But what ever happened there should have had some research done before discarding the carcass. This could be an indication of abnormal activities in our waters, either natural or man made.what about the recent tremors tha we had could there be any connection? or is there heavy machines like submarines in our waters? these do affect whales and other marine life due to loud noises and vibrations.we should be somewhat concerned

It probably is a young pilot whale, like commenters posted below. But just FYI, the number of creatures that could potentially wash up on our shores is significant, since there are deep-water fishes that we do not often encounter and that would look utterly bizarre if they appeared on a beach. There is a creature called an oarfish, for instance, which lives deep in the sea and resembles nothing so much as a sea serpent; were it to wash ashore, it would indeed resemble that mythological creature. Moreover, some creatures’ corpses also undergo severe degradation, so severe in some cases, in fact, that they do not resemble the original creature much at all. The classic example is the basking shark, the washed-up corpses of which sometimes decompose beyond all visible recognition. Octopi, giant squids, and whales also may form such corpses. These scarcely recognizable objects are known as “globsters,” and you can read an informal description of them on Wikipedia:

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Globster

And here is an artist’s rendering of an oarfish that apparently washed ashore in Bermuda in 1860: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:Giant_oarfish_bermuda_beach_1860.jpg

This clearly is not such a thing, but if a globster should wash ashore, I imagine it would cause great speculation (as well as the usual cries from certain persons that the world is ending), so it’s best to be aware of the possibilities of what such an object may be.

Although the entire body is not depicted in the photo, it appears to be one of the very shy and infrequently sighted dwarf sperm whales that I have been observing since the 1980’s.
One has Always been sighted in the same location approximately 1/2 mile south west of the outer Cabrit.
Two others always sighted west of soufriere

I checked google for images of a baby pilot whale, and I think this has some similarities. I may be wrong. A hungry shark may have bitten it causing it to get seperated from its parents and thus being forced to wash up on the shore from its weakness. Just maybe….

    that is not a fish.

Its a mammal. One can tell from the blow hole on the top of the head.

It resembles a juvenile pilot whale, but don’t quote me on that. There is also a possibility that it is a porpoise.
