With the commencement of the hurricane season the Environmental Health Department and the Canefield Urban Council are collaborating on an old ‘white goods’ collection in the communities of Canefield and Morne Daniel beginning today (Tuesday).
‘White goods’ are considered appliances painted in white enamel finish and includes stoves, fridges, washing machines, air conditioners and the like.
The organizers of the collections said galvanise, iron and other metals are also on the collection list.
“This serves as a mitigating measure at the commencement of the hurricane season ensuring that all unwanted items are removed from around the homes as these can become missiles in the event of strong winds and or hurricane,” a release from the Ministry of Health said.
It also said the collection “is being done to provide an avenue for residence to remove all white goods and to clean all water ways and drains as a means of source reduction for the breeding of Mosquitoes and Rodents and to enhance the aesthetics of the environment.”
The departments are now urging residents of Canefield and Morne Daniel to make use of the opportunity to remove all old appliances from their communities.
The timetable for the collection is as follows:
Tuesday June 4th, 2013 – for residents of 1st street to 22nd Street, Roger, Benna Ravine and Yander.
Wednesday June 5th, 2013- for residents of Canefield East, Housing Scheme, RBC Housing Scheme and River Estate.
Thursday June 6th, 2013 for residents of Cocoa Bottom and Morne Daniel.
All pick-ups will begin at 10 a.m. on the above mentioned dates.
The department strongly encourages residents to remove unwanted items from their homes.
Jeez, this is like today for today notice…
Something really needs to be done with the timely and effective garbage collection in Dominica. Notices are sent out for villagers to put out their white goods and to date if you pass through many of those villages these eye soar is line up by the road waiting to be collected. And then we are admonished by the health ministry to safe guard against rat born diseases
That’s always a good move, but it should be done more consistently for other communities, so long I am waiting for something like this at Castle Comfort. Do we have to link up with a council to get it done as well?
Just curious, once these items are collected is there any intention to try to recycle the metal in these appliances? I hope the intent is not to simply bury them in a landfil or worst yet dump them into the marine environment, “out of sight out of mind” After all this initiative is being undertaken by the Dept responsible for environmental health.
The name of the Coroporation is Solid Waste MANAGEMENT

Missy, this is an organised plan to deal with scrap metal or metal products so don’t start with your I hope, or just curious. These guys know what they are doing….Thank You.
the article talked about the collection but nothing mentioned about what would be done with them hence I am curious. When the full story has not been told one should always ask for more information instead of making assumptions.
Yes, I believe they are shipped to other countries who recycle the metal. Scrap metal is a big money business in the US.
