EU Provides Additional €500,000 in Humanitarian Aid to Dominica

The European Union flag.

The European Union is providing an additional €500,000 (EC$1,600,000) in humanitarian aid to Dominica, following the severe destruction caused by Hurricane María on 18 September 2017, via the European Commission’s Directorate-General for European Civil Protection and Humanitarian Aid Operations (ECHO). María, a category 5 hurricane, hit Dominica leaving more than 70,000 people in need of urgent relief.

“We aim to increase our support to families who are displaced and living in collective centres or with host families since the hurricane, and are in need of shelter, food and water,” said Androulla Kaminara, ECHO's Director of Operations for Latin America and the Caribbean. .

The additional aid will provide immediate shelter and household material for 5,000 vulnerable families in Dominica. Shelter kits, as well as housing repair materials, training and technical support will be provided to the most vulnerable whose homes have been damaged.

Daniela Tramacere, EU Ambassador to the Organisation of Eastern Caribbean States said “The EU has been committed since the very beginning to support Dominica after the tragedy. We are now committed to further assist Dominica in early recovery and reconstruction.”

This additional humanitarian aid complements an initial grant of €250,000(EC$800,000), which was allocated in September to alleviate the affected population’s most urgent needs (basic kits for survival, clean water and food, shelter material and fuel, as well as logistical support to reach isolated communities).

Since 1999, the European Commission has provided € 2,919,216 in humanitarian aid to Dominica, including emergency relief after Tropical Storm Erika severely damaged the island in August 2015, leaving 30 people dead.

Nadia, please go ahead and express your views in peace and freedom and being an intelligent person get rid of that hate of another’s expression and rise above this lack of intelligence and focus on one being a critic rather than following the blind loyalists of a corrupt labour government. As a tax payer I have that right to be a critic of Skerrit and his rotten government of the evil poverty brought onto Dominica. If you are stuck in cork street and not know of the suffering of the people in rural communities, wake up and go live in rural area for a while and experience the high level of poverty. Other than that live well alone. I have no hatred for Skerrit, he knows that, so stop being ridiculous and just add to the conversation. Dominica needs to be cleansed and we start with this corrupt Labour government and its inept Skerrit, a failed leader with nonsense advisors who surrounds him. He is not man enough or intellectual enough to be aware of this. Talk of issues
    Skerrit Must Go

One of the government’s greatest weaknesses is TRANSPARENCY & ACCOUNTABIlITY. You would have thought, just like the daily press briefing running commentaries, that the nation would get (at least) weekly commentaries on the status of RELEAF SUPPORT (from whom and what exactly) and FUNDS raised (from whom and exact amount). No, even after Tropical storm Irma and now Hurricane Maria the SECRECY continues… I hope with this approach the government gets the near EC$20billion I once heard was estimated to fix Dominica.

Good luck PM Skerrit… just smile, let your dimples protrude all boundaries and the international Aid Donna agencies, friendly nations, CBI passport holders etc will throw all the monies required at you. A very simple and easy task for you… it’s right up your street.

I am horrified that viewexpressed hates Dominica so much to red pond in such a hateful manner that displays the hatred for Prime Minister Roosevelt Skerritt and the government. At such a time when people are suffering and in need of desperate help. This is a ti.e to be thankful that the international community are reaching out to bring relief. Oh my. This is sheer madness.
All monies coming to any country have to be monitored rightly so as no cash is put in the hands of any one individual. It looks like jealousy is rearing its ugly head.
I say Thank you on behalf of the people of Dominica.

But surely Nadia Karam, I can’t see what’s so very wrong in viewexpressed asking for such budgetary Control mechanisms to be put in place re all monies given to the government of Dominica for the purposes of the aftermath of Hurricane Maria relief effort and rebuild thrust. With this government being embroiled in so many ALLEGED scandals in the past, it’s indeed very nervous times ahead.

When will we as a people ever VALUE an opposing viewpoint and accept it thus Democracy?

Nadia, I am sure that views expressed is grateful to the EU, as am I but this has nothing to do with Roosevelt Skerrit. I too do not have a high opinion of someone who accommodates and gives diplomatic status of our country to the likes o Monfare, Madueke, Corallo and others of similar ilk….and that is just for starters. The generosity of the EU tax payers is not Skerrit’s work.

Nadia boldly writes: “All monies coming to any country have to be monitored rightly so as no cash is put in the hands of any one individual….” Girl, Nadia you just made me and others laugh at you . Either you are illiterate in following current affairs, you are blind in a house and obvious to the current issues of Dominica, or just ignorant and in denial in defence of Skerrit.
How do you know that all monies re accounted for Nadia, are in your Finance. Have you not been following The Right Hon Lennox Linton, or you like others have just adopted a hate for this gentleman because he has exposed Skerrit poor performance and questionable misuse of states funds. Recall the Bin bobol, and Fertilizer bobol and the Red Clinic Bobol. have al these been accounted for. I challenge you to talk to talk in silence to a civil servant and ask questions.
The truth will reveal. Now leave me alone and go mind the business of Dominica. That is your challenge. I hate corrupt leaders, go tell…

Nadia, I will not disrespect like you Skerrit by saying “Go to H*ll. Go to H*ll…Go To H*ll”…they are corrupt. I welcome critic and feedback, that Skerrit resists, he is not a mature man. Nadia they are useless, we civil servant know that…… look what I am reading in front me now, due to confidentiality, I am honoured not to share, but tell you other than breaking all protocol of relief delivery, this Labour boys are dangerous and clueless of how to build up people let alone Dominica.

You must be an idiot to allow politics to interfere with aid rendered to help bring the country back, such ignorance :

    • October 27, 2017

Thats my point but everyone brings in their personal attributes about PM Skerritt whereby EU relief Aid is about humanitarian aid to Dominicans in a crisis.
the above responses are attacking the messenger and not see my response is about relief coming to the country.

EU…please, please please monitor this clown corrupt Labour government with your tax payers money. We know them well as we have been asking for accountability in our money and those that come from overseas. Please ensure transparent, monitoring and accountability tools and systems in place. We have a list of on-going accountability issues for this so called government to report on. The Bin Bobol. The Fertilizer Bobol, the CBI money. Therefore, we, parliament and the people only got to know of this devious act onky when the Right Hon. Lennox Linton Leader of the Opposition exposed their dirty deals and corruption.

You can keep crying from daybreak to sunset no one is going to pay attention to you; you are devious and full of animosity towards prime minister Skerrit. I also concur you are blinded with jealousy. You may change your pseudonym but you will come across the same to rational people. Incidentally, I have not heard anything from Linton concerning the destruction of Dominica by hurricane Maria. Any reassurance from him would be appreciated by the Dominican people.

Expat, but of course someone is, and many more will pay attention to me and my Expression of truth. You just did, I have got your attention, you have respond and many has. The issue with you all is that, it is not about me, or inept Skerrit or about Hon Linton or about the Corrupt Labour Party or about the decent hard working UWP., but it is about Dominica. Can you rise to this level please,? We need to save Dominica going down tis political abyss rated by so called inept PM and his corrupt government.
You all will hear much more of me. Good Luck…Happy Independence.
