Tourism Minister Denise Charles has announced that plans are in place for the expansion of the Cabrits National Park which will allow more space for hosting the annual Jazz n’ Creole event in the future.

Hundreds of Dominicans and visitors alike flocked to the Cabrits National Park in Portsmouth on Sunday, April 30, to witness an exciting Jazz n’ Creole event this year.

“One of the things we are doing, we have a project which will look at renovation of the Cabrits National Park, and in the future we should have much more space,” she said.

Charles continued, “One of the things we are trying to do is to ensure that we create economic activity in every hamlet and Jazz n’ Creole is not just about Cabrits, but it’s about Portsmouth, it’s about spending the weekend in the north.”

According to her, based on the information this year many people have made it a weekend in the north, “and came up since Friday night, some came on Saturday night and we had a lot of Fringe events that people could go and enjoy…”

Charles pointed out that so far residents of Portsmouth are happy to have Jazz n’ Creole.

“I love the creativity, the beautiful designs, and everyone [looked] beautiful at Cabrits,” she stated.

“The headline acts for this year’s event were Haitian-American artiste, Phyllisia Ross, Grammy-nominated Black Violin of Fort Lauderdale.

A number of other bands including, Swingin’ Stars and Signal Band, the Island Jazz Collective featuring Jussi Paavola, and much more performed at the event.

The dress code for the event was ‘Rainforest Fantasy’.

I struggled to appreciate the authentic / true JAZZ music in this event. Nothing on display symbolising that broad style of music characterised by complex harmony, syncopated rhythms, and the heavy emphasis on improvisation.

It’s rather unfair for dfc to be organizing jazz at that magnitude at the same time with Mayfest.
Mayfest is being crushed by jazz and buried by the jazz after party.
    Mayfest was here before jazz.
Yet it seems ok to kill one community to promote another.
I don’t think that is how it should be.
None of the fringe took place in marigot

Neal while I agree with you fully, I would also like to remind everyone that if we look deep enough solutions to that problem can be found. I am a Mayfest guy but I see nothing wrong with moving Mayfest to the last weekend in April or 2nd weekend in May and rename it. Skerro is hell bent on killing Mayfest and will NOT change the Jazz & Creole date.

Yes on initial thoughts there may be less money to spend since its not on Month-end weekend but the volume of people attending will increase and offset that minor issue. Knowing Dcan’s and how they like to a sewo they will find the money so let us look for solutions early. Change the date! 8)

That’s an impressive crowd, and a young crowd for a jazz event. With tickets at $135 a head, plus the cost of transport and spend onsite, it appears that Dominica is booming.

Who’s to say tickets were not given free of charge. That way the venue is seen as a success and the labour supporters get their customary reward (bribe). Dominica is country of illusions. Soon we don’t know what is real and what is a hoax.

I smile, because I submitted this comment with tongue in cheek. But I suspect that I’m “well loved” due to the “likes” taking me seriously.
