Expansion of NEP, Yes We Care among plans of new DLP administration

Prime Minister Skerrit speaking at the swearing-in of the new DLP Cabinet

The National Employment Program (NEP), to include mentorships and apprenticeships, and the Yes We Care Program are some of the programs to be expanded in the new term of the Dominica Labour Party (DLP).

“The continuation of our signature social programmes such as Yes We Care, Rapid Response and the expansion of the National Employment Program [NEP] to include mentorships and apprenticeships, enlarging opportunities for public engagement and citizens’ dialogue with political leaders in person and via social media,” Prime Minister Roosevelt Skerrit said recently. “The creation of a new cultural, social and economic sphere for our young people with new opportunities for training, growth, prosperity and upward mobility.”

He said this also includes the protection of the poor and vulnerable.

The prime minister also mentioned the creation of new opportunities and protection for Dominicans living with disabilities.

According to him, the fisheries and agricultural sector will be restructured and modernized to create new products and new wealth for farmers and fisherfolk.

“The rebranding of Dominica and the development of a new thrust in tourism and enhancing the existing product with new five-star hotels,” Skerrit added.

He said plans are in place for the construction and coming on stream of a new international airport, cruise terminal and cargo port and urban and rural modernization and development.

The new DLP administration’s “vision in the new term” also includes the revitalization of Roseau, which the prime minister describes as an important initiative for the commercial development of the capital city.

He said the public will see the continuation of a national housing revolution, the expansion and revamping of our education system, effective human resource planning and development and a new national thrust towards excellence.

Skerrit has also promised to expand the country’s healthcare system to place greater emphasis on, “disease prevention, community-based and primary health with a network of polyclinics and new health investment.”

He added that the empowerment of the Kalinago people, gender equity and new openings for women as well as expanding opportunities for citizens, also forms part of his party’s vision.

People need sustainable, good paying jobs. Jobs in which people’s salaries and wages have far outpaced inflation. Expanding NEP is a cynical attempt to pacify an uneasy, restive population of working age. These people have been denied a chance to live healthy and productive lives because of the deplorable state of the economy. The pathetic policies of this totalitarian government have thousands of working age Dominicans and their dependents living on the edge of life. The walls are proverbially closing in.

@Hmmm, unless people like you learn to think positive, then you will never see the positive production. Don’t you think that it is foolish of you to write that comment above?

The Prime Minister speaks about work improvement for the people of Dominica, especially for those idle ones–perhaps like you–who are running around like empty barrels, disturbing the ears of those around them with all their useless noises.

What else do you all want from him?

Skerrit continues to prey on the foolish, the needy, the ederly, the desperate. This man is gonna be here for a long time because the majority of dominicans are needy, ie uneducated. #Laborites

THE CALL TO PRAYER – BY QUEEN VICTORIA

Listen to the words of Queen Victoria’s calypso song, calling them out on BRIBERY & CORRUPTION coupled with NEPOTISM & CRONYISM.

To put into words… the effects from bureaucratic corruption cripples labour productivity growth, affecting the employment structure of Dominica.

With all due respect, I believe programs that help the poor and underprivileged are outstanding programs, but in our case it would benefit our people more if we could provide real jobs for our people. Jobs that are self-sustaining and allows the individual to grow and progress. Jobs that encourage the young to dream and want to participate. Our economy will never be better if all the money spent on projects are given to outsiders. Why aren’t Dominicans building houses for the housing revolution? Why aren’t Dominicans building the bridges and infrastructure that is necessary to move forward. Why isn’t our CBI money bankrolling local businesses so that these same businesses will hire local people and keep the money here. NEP and we care are great programs, but no youth will dream or aspire to make these their goals in life.

    same old same old
    nothing new here
how many sleepless nights did it take you to come with this
how much brain power did you spend to tell people to come to your office for you to help dem with their daily needs?

nothing of what you propose will boost our failing economy
how many more passports do you intend to sell for the next 5 years….it’s not like NEP helping de tax revenue

Where are the creative and innovative economic and entrepreneurial ideas to empower the people to empower themselves? Can a weekly or monthly meagre stipend help to raise someone’s living conditions from floor height? Skerrit is convinced that Dominicans are very gullible and easy to manipulate. He may be just right for once in his life.

Anytime, in any country, the people become dependent on government for handouts in order to subsist, that’s a failed STATE. Presently, without a doubt, Dominica’s economy is gasping for oxygen. Government HANDOUTS will only exacerbate the present precarious economic situation. People, working for NEP cannot help you to procure a loan at any financial institution. How are you to elevate yourselves out of this deep financial pit hole without a decent and reliable source of income? The country is in an economic black hole. Corruption and selfish, greedy, thoughtless public policies and decisions have Dominica floundering like a fowl, taking its last breath, after its neck has been broken.

        KID ON THE BLOCK

Just recently returned to Canada, following a year’s stint in Dominica building my dream home. The reality in D/ca is that SKY-high taxes, over-regulation and government meddling are making Dominican’s poorer. You say before the EC$400.00 what was the people getting? That’s 20 years ago right, well they were earning an income by having a job, even making some extra money on the side to supplement their full-time gig.

You live in the lying past. Deal with the present day crises that have gripped the country under Skerrit’s twenty years of lacklustre and futile stewardship. Time does not stand still like the odorous stagnant drain water throughout Roseau. Stop living in the past for we don’t live there anymore. Your sordid attempt to distort the past to justify the bleak and ominous present and future of living conditions under Skerrit won’t work.

Magway ca,it is more than $400.If you do not know,SHUT your UWP lying mouth.Lying RAT.These people put more than $1,500,000 in circulation every month. The 3,400 people in the NEP,helped to keep UWP out of office.

        Lin Clown,

Are you for real? Do you really know the value of money? $1,500,000 divided by 3,400 is $441.18 so, are you telling me that $41.18 increase after 20 years is so much more than half a loaf for you to gloat about? I love my country but I find it hard to fathom that in 2020 when the most basic cell phone costs $1,000 you gloat about a $41 increase on a $400 paycheck. It is just shameful for the rest of the world to witness the idiocy that our people spew.
