A grant in excess of $673,000 has been approved for commencement of projects under the Banana Accompanying Measures (BAM) Program and feeder roads will be given attention and rehabilitated.

Prime Minister and Minister of Finance, Roosevelt Skerrit revealed that information in parliament on Thursday while seeking approval for supplementary estimates for expenditure during the period 1st January 2014 to 30 June 2014.

He said all feeder roads selected by the government for rehabilitation during the project have been surveyed.

“All the feeder roads selected and prioritized by the ministry of Agriculture and Forestry for rehabilitation under the BAM have been surveyed and estimations for the rehabilitation works has been prepared through the engagement of private consultants as well as staff from the Ministry of Public Works and lands and survey division,” he said.

He noted further that, companies both local and regional have been invited to tender for the validation and supervision of works to be undertaken in two phases.

“This will include verification of the selected roads and verification approval of engineering drawings and pre-construction costs estimates,” he explained.

The indicative timetable for the project, as outlined by the prime minister, is below:

-Deadline for submission of tenders for supervision: September 12, 2014

-Start of supervision contract: October 1, 2014

-Deadline of publication of tender for the works: November 30, 2014

-Deadline for submission of tenders for works: December 31, 2014

-Tender evaluation and award of contract: January 2015

-Commencement of work: February 2015

According to Prime Minister Skerrit, grant financing of $255,000 under the BAM was also approved, “for citrus certification for the construction of composting base at the Botanical Gardens and purchase of equipment.”

Meanwhile he said, the fight against the Black Sigatoka disease continues.

“In an effort to curb and manage the disease approval was given for an additional $49,996.36 to be used for the procurement of chemicals,” he said.

BAM is funded by the European Union.

speak the truth, initially the government said they were going to do 19 roads after Mr Trotter did an inspection and costings for these roads the money could only do about 3 to 4 feeder roads–T

How can someone be both minister of finance and Prime Minister at the same time in a country? that is a conflict of interest and opens it up for too much cookery, illegal activity and favoritism..

Farmers are the biggest cry baby’s out there these days. crying for feeder roads. Farmers get everything duty free, down to the vehicles, feed, fertilizer, wire etc. Then they raise their prices on produce then turn around and cry for government to give them a road to their farm. Don’t ever be fooled people, FARMERS MAKE MONEY! If i was to buy a piece of property in the country side to live, you think government going and give me a road to my home? no, they will tell me who tell me go and live there, go and build your own road, or wait till a significant number of people move in the area. i think farmers can do a lot more for themselves because they are profitable many of them and they still get a good regime of concessions and assistance from the government. MY OPINION.

“Strong opposition?” For more than a decade all the UWPWee did was persecute Skerrit and all who are close to him, walk out of Parliament take on legal battles that it could never win, and bellyache and you want to convince Dominicans that BAM is the result of UWPwee pressure on the government? I suppose you too, have been asleep for the past 14 years.

objectively looking at politricks and support that statement. Socially for the past yrs they have been out of office, what has the uwp done of significance to improve the lives of their constituents? as a party? How can i vote them when the last thing i can remember they did was change the plaque that had Dame Eugenia Charles name on it to a fountain. If i was a politician , i wold never wait for politics or election time. As a servant of my people i would serve. All the elections money id never waste it on blue tshirts and flags and bottles and nonsense that only for show, id put my people to work for the development of my communities piece by peice. By time elections come, half my battle win and my people would see the fruits and not wonder what if. they would already know. but no, that is not the case with these people.

        September 20, 2014

@ Peeping Tom: You seem to be peeping for too long no wonder you are unable to see that after 14 years when ALL farmers have finally left their farm a go looking for security Skerrit is coming and promise rehabilitation of feeder roads. Why wasn’t all that mentioned in the budget? Is that the same Skerrit who promised a boat to transport farmers fresh vegetables? Is that the same Skerrit who promised to repair a few feeder roads last financial year and was never done? Is that the same Skerrit who said they are building an Abatoire so that farmers could supply it with meat of all kinds and to date cannot be completed? So peeping boss come into the open and see the many abandoned farms under the Government, maybe then you will make it clear that this won’t fool you again. Feel so sorry for you unrealistic supporters. I appears to me that you might just one day congratulate Skerrit for saying that his is going to construct a subway from Portsmouth to Roseau!! We are just so blind politically!!!!!! In the mean time we in the USA will be watching!!!

If we are really serious about agriculture in Dominica that amount is really inadequate, nonetheless its something and its a start. But to make any significant impact and motivate the youth and other farmers to get back into agriculture you would require more like EC$8,000,000.00 towards feeder roads islandwide. So that would give a clear indication as to how much the whole Ministry of Agriculture is under provided for. Nonetheless thanks for the little pittance and small mercies.

Dominicans ,lets thank GOD for sir linton ,he is really making the impossibles happen ,muchless for when he takes the seat, because we really dont need a prime minister who does things only when election is round the corner ,and when its gone ,all projects gone with it ,till next election again

Too little – too late – the agriculture sector in this country has been decimated by the DLP. Any Govt in Dominica that turns their back on agrculture does not deserve to govern.

The feeder road have and will be an integral part of economic development through agriculture.

    Labour must GO!!!!!

wasnt it UWP who turned from Agriculture and said we need to focus on Tourism in the 90’s? thats was a rhetorical question btw, yes it was them. I believe both sectors are essential as one contributes to the success of the other. but yes it was uwp who shifted the focus away from agriculture i the 90’s and placed it on tourism. they should have sought to develop both. an agricultural university like how ross has a medical university should be our next goal. Food and water will be the new oil and gold in time to come, and we have tremendous potential for both.
