Fifty students were able to obtain ones in six or more subject areas at this year’s Caribbean Secondary Education Certificate (CSEC) Examinations.

This information was revealed by Education Minister Petter Saint Jean during a ceremony to announce the results of the 2016 CXC CSEC held at the Public Service Union (PSU) Building on Friday.

Among the top performing students were Inoela Vital a student of the Convent High School receiving 12 ones,  Kareen George also of the Convent High School who received 11 ones and one 2, and Joanice Kernella George of the Pierre Charles Secondary School who obtained 10 ones and 3 twos.

These results are said to be preliminary and therefore, subject to change.

“This year we recorded fifty students attaining six grade ones or more,” he said. “This is an increase over last year’s figure.”

Saint Jean continued, “It is also very heartening to register the increasing number of students who are exiting with 5 ones or more both in English A and Mathematics.”

According to him it is an upward trend that his ministry hopes to see continue in the future.

Saint Jean congratulated the students on their achievement and also their families and teachers for providing full support.

“Your hard work, perseverance and your commitment have placed you at the top of the list and you ought to take pride in your achievement…,” he said.

He also expressed pride in the performance of students at this year’s CSEC exams , noting that, “very often we seem to forget the exceptional performance of our young people and major on the negative.”

Saint Jean said the Ministry of Education remains committed to ensuring that every learner achieves educational growth in a safe and caring environment.

“We are continuing to afford our students the opportunity to access the highest quality of education at our schools,” he stated, adding, “We are also putting the necessary structures in place to ensure that they are prepared for a productive life in a competitive global environment.”

The Ministry of Education, he said, will continue to review its teaching methods and ensure that a support system is in place for teachers to improve their delivery and effectiveness.

CXC local registrar, Chandler Hyacinth, said Dominica continues to show improvement in the CSEC exams, the Caribbean Certificate of Secondary Level Competence (CCSLC) and the Caribbean Advanced Proficiency Examination (CAPE).

She revealed that at the CSEC exams there was an increase in the number of subjects entered and candidates from Dominica wrote some 33 subjects.

She said some new subjects were introduced this year, including additional mathematics and the re-introduction of religious education.

Hyacinth said that although there was an increase in the number of school students writing exams this year, the number of private candidates decreased significantly this year.

“In 2015 we had 575 private students writing exams, in 2016 we only had 448 students,” she stated.

She said that in the CSEC exams, the overall pass rate for Dominica has moved from 73.3 percent to 81.7 percent in 2016.

“Eight of our schools are above this average and twelve of our schools secured an overall 75 percent or more pass rate,” Hyacinth explained. “For Dominica, both school candidates and private candidates, some 6383 sittings took place.”

“When we look at the analysis of the results we see that our female students continue to perform better than their male counterparts,” she remarked.

Hyacinth congratulated the school principals, parents and teachers who provide the support required by the students pointing out that many students attained grade ones compared to last year.

The CXC Registrar said there was a 100 percent pass in music, a subject that can be taken as as a CSEC exam before 5th form, and encouraged schools to take up music and theatre arts.

Meanwhile, Chief Education Officer Melena Fontaine said the Ministry of Education is proud to present its report card for this year’s CSEC exams, especially in light of the difficult start following the passage of Tropical Storm Erika.

“Some schools started about a month after especially Grammar School after school was supposed to start,” she stated. She thanked all the Principals for going extra mile and ensuring that school hours were extended and weekend camps were convened, “so that students could catch up and they could give us the results that they gave us this year.”

She said that Dominica is still 12 percentage points above the regional average of 44 percent.

“Convent High School, St Mary’s Academy, St John’s Academy maintained their high average, but there were four other schools that showed increases from last year to this year, Portsmouth Secondary, North East Comprehensive, St Martin Secondary and Orion Academy,” she revealed.

The Chief Education Officer commended the Goodwill Secondary School for obtaining significant increases in 9 subject areas as well as obtaining 100 percent pass rates in Agricultural Science, English B [Literature] and Physical Education.

Last year forty students obtain ones in six or more subject areas in the CSEC Examinations.

A total of 1282 students wrote the CSEC exams this year, including 834 from the 15 secondary schools and 448 private candidates.

The top fifty performers in the 2016 CSEC Exams are listed below.

Congratulations to the fifty students. You have projected that you took your studies seriously. This is also good news for the teachers and parents who took an interest in the students to ensure they excel. Compliment to you.
Teachers, you diligently instructed and guided them to the stage of completing their students to the finish.
I hope all of you had a wonderful school vacation. It is soon “back-to-school” for another year.
God bless each one of you!

Congratulations to all students who sat CSEC and CAPE.
Big kudos to the top performers especially Inoela Vital. You must be an inspiration for others.

Anyone knows why we were not informed of the performance at A Levels?

This is a change from previous years. It probably should be understood that the “1’s” mean A’s which is why they thought an explanation was not necessary. I took it as such they are “A’s.”

Great job both students, teachers and parents. This is what happens when parents, teachers and students play their part. Now,treat the teachers as they should be treated, instead of like peasant workers. With an insulting salary

    August 19, 2016

WOW that is amazing… Now with all this great news I hope teachers can see an increase on their salaries because not only are the teachers putting in the work to ensure our children excel…They are some of these kids biggest supporters along with their parents… the ones the children can go to in times of trouble etc. Being a good teacher is no easy job and I believe that the teachers should get paid fairly for their hard efforts in this tiring but rewarding industry.

Congratulations to the students, your diligence and determination has paid off.

Kudos to the teachers for their unwavering and tireless efforts, despite the many challenges that they have to constantly deal with in their profession of choice.

In all of this, to God be the glory.
