I know most of the people who lose their homes up there, I was told it was someone that hung out there regularly than set fire there, I was told he was mental and is now in Psychiatry. I can assure you that they would love a better house, if you saw how they were living before, you would cry. I do hope the gov’t gives them better, safer and more stable houses to live in, cuz I don’t think they would want to move. That’s their neighborhood.

There is nothing wrong in having a wooden house. If a house is habitable and this is what you like the gov’t cannot oblige you to build your house in concrete …Wooden house when they are well build can last for even over one hundred years…I personally think that it is healthier to live in a wooden house,it is cooler in the heat and still cooler at nights. nonetheless concrete both concrete house and wooden houses can burn down, here in the U.K I have never seen a wooden house ,all are made with clay bricks or stones, yet they still burn down taking many lives, fire is caused by forgetting candles burning , electricity, irons that were not turned off, cigarettes ,cooking, accidents, criminal intent. In this case I hope they find the cause of the fire. Most important as long as every one is safe and sound life continues…Bless them..

I agree with you. Pertaining to wooden houses are cooler is correct. Concrete buildings are extremely hot in summer especially if the occupants do not have an air-conditioner. Concrete buildings in cold climates are constructed for winter; not for summer. If the accommodation is a large one, more than one air conditioner will be required. Some people will purchase them. Air-conditioners also blow-up and catch fire.
I saw a wooden skyscraper building on a Website. It is stated this will be the manner of building in years to come. I thought, it will be cooler.
I heard through the Media, we should not cook on high heat, that we cook and not burn our food.
I also heard that the pot should be the size of the burner; not smaller. I have informed a few people about that.
      Precaution is better than cure.
We need to pray for protection also against fires.

Who built them? At this point if the government disallows them where will the owners live? A housing project would be necessary but it costs money.

It has everything to do with it. They are catholics most of them and the Catholic church has done nothing to improve the lives of its followers. It has taken every last penny from these people, so yes it has a part to play. The millions of dolars could give these people new houses and better living conditions.

It is unbelievable that these structures still exist in our “modern” capital City, Roseau! I mean by God…this is 2016! Maybe it is time to demolish these unsightly wooden structures and to rebuild the Capital City into a truly beautiful modern metropolis! When you travel to other Countries you can definitely see the vast difference between their Capital Cities and ours. Parts of Roseau surely looks like a shanty town…and yet no one seems to be ashamed at what we present to visitors when they visit our shores. Our Capital City represents the entire Country, our economy and our PRIDE! As a matter of fact whatever happened to the promise of a “new” Roseau and a “new” Portsmouth making them both the envy of other Islands in the region??? Dominica we are really behind in time. Everywhere else is striving to live in the 21st century while we remain stuck in 1980; we value the minimal improvement of our roads as the ultimate in development! How sad!

Look everyone has a responsibility to develop themselves. I’m not saying that there aren’t people less fortunate who cannot handle such improvements themselves (and some assessment should be done to alleviate their situation) but many people are irresponsible and squander away their earnings instead of saving and working towards something. To make it worse when they bring this plight on themselves instead of reflecting on their situation and trying to find a solution they just sit back in bitterness and blame others, government being the number one scapegoat.

Stupes some of you just love sensationalism! Have you seen buildings in NY DC North Carolina Miami Dennark, Sweden , London , Singapore etc? you would think the way some of you speak the streets of other places are all built in platinum and glass buildings.. get a damn grip. A man’s home is his castle, to you it something worth demolishing but to them it’s their treasured quiet rest spot.

I am so sorry for these people but this is not a complete surprise seeing how these poor people living in such appalling conditions, right there by the cathedral that thinks nothing of spending millions on a new roof. Do we have our priorities right? I hope they find a safe and sanitary refuse. May God help all of us, especially those that have eyes but refuse to see.

      March 9, 2016

Even the Scriptures say that the poor will always be there. Are you trying to rewrite the Scriptures? These people according to you are financially poor, but tell me, are they spiritually poor as well? The Cathedral, yes, are you suggesting that rebuilding the roof is not a priority?

I have a suggestion for you though. Why don’t you make a financial contribution to alleviate the plight of these people you claim are poor?

this land was given to the people by the church. It was suppose to be temporary but it turned permanent.

really idiot. others spendin millions on hotel and casinos and air con church and a church cant fix it roof ?????

    • StupZ
      March 9, 2016

What is your point. Do you know the church gave these people the land to settle untill they find a location, you know what they did they never moved off the church property. This is a lesson to all ” do onto others as you would like them to do onto you”. The government should assist these people to be relocated and get a proper location to settle on. Yes the church is raising money to put a new roof which is nessacery if not the old roof would have collapsed, so I don’t see your point about the church collecting money. Am sure u have a mortgage paying for you house, why u didn’t take that money and give to the less fortunate. HYPOCRASY !!!

What happened to that area? I recall it was a decent area to live. Some people may have allowed the houses to deteriorate.
Never criticize the money given to the Church to help repair it. People as you today have no respect for God and for Church. This was not so in bygone years.
What happened to you? God is taking note. The more you speak ill about the Church, the more you are heaping eternal burning coals on your head.
