Miss Dominica 2016, Tasia Floissac, has launched a series of Youth Development Sessions at the UWI Open Campus, for the month of June, as part of her platform: Families Influencing Resilient and Empowered Societies (FIRES) campaign.
The first session which was held this morning, was attended by the newly established Queen’s Crew volunteers, and other individuals from the general public.
Chaperone for Miss Dominica 2016, Leandra Lander, explained the importance of the sessions.
“As we know, it’s important to empower our young people because they do form our families,” she stated. “Today they will be receiving some information and empowerment…and this will continue over the next few weeks, and few months.”
According to Lander, sessions will deal with “areas such as how to prepare for the workplace and even simple etiquette, social media etiquette, how to begin your tertiary education, how to launch into applying for university or a job.”
Dominican facilitators and professionals will be invited to conduct sessions throughout the series, she said. This week’s speakers were Officer-in-Charge at UWI Open Campus, Kimone Joseph and Public Relations Officer for the Ministry of Education, Dionne Durand.
In April, Floissac hosted her first major activity, ‘Bridging the Gap’, where members of the Queen’s Crew visited the elderly at the Dominica Infirmary: Home for the Aged.
Queen’s Crew volunteer, Selena Cuffy, stated that she was grateful for the opportunity to give back to the elderly, whom she described as the “pillars of society.”
“We see that the elderly are not to be forgotten when they have gotten to that age where they cannot help themselves, but rather, they are still the pillars of society,” she noted. “And, it meant a lot to give back to them, to show that we still love them and still care about them.”
Lander also announced an upcoming ‘Fantastic Fathers’ Day Challenge’, which will require participants to prepare a one-minute video with their father/father figure. The activity is meant to “highlight our fathers because they are not all bad,” she explained.
This is a good initiative. However I expected to at least see a quote from the queen in the article… Is it really she that launched or was it Miss Lander since is she that’s all over in the photos and speaking.
That is Miss Dominica 2016 nuh? So why they have her picture up…where’s the real queen.
One thing that queen from 100 years ago really trying hard to stay in the spotlight.
THIS IS A GREAT INITIATIVE
