Five retired teachers have been recognised and awarded for more than thirty (30) years of service in the profession.

They are Celia Blaize for 40 years of service, Rosillia LeBlanc for 39 years of service, Bernice Leslie for 37 years of service , Antia Royer for 34 years of service and Athelstane Seraphin for 36 years of service.

The awards were presented to the teachers by the Dominica Association of Teachers (D.A.T) for their dedication to the teaching profession at a Civil Ceremony held at Pointe Mitchel on Friday morning.

The ceremony formed part of D.A.T celebrations for 2012 world Teacher’s Day under the theme “Take a Stand for Teachers.”

Speaking at the event, Acting Minister for Education and Human Resource, Justina Charles, urged teachers to remain steadfast and to see themselves as role models.

She said “a true teacher is one who sets high expectations for all students and goes the extra mile to ensure that they achieve. as teachers we must appreciate the fact that each child is unique therefore we must do our very best to ensure that all students are given a fair chance to succeed.”

Charles added “let us use this day to reflect and re-evaluate our values as well as our contributions to our schools and society as a whole. I urge you continue exhibiting high ethical, moral and proffessional value and approach your proffession with a degree of responsibility and commitment.”

The Minister applauded the D.A.T for the various professional development activities that they have so far provided.

Bernice Leslie will be missed for her relentless effort to ensure the children of the P.C.S.S.maintain high marks in C.X.C.exams.She was always punctual and oftentimes would stay on her job till six o[clock in the evening to help the students with their school work. She is one of the best educators of our time and wished that the home economic department can be named after her. We and the entire community missed you teacher Bernice.

A profession of absolute worth. I salute the courageous persons who have made teaching their vocation. Well done “DAT” for earning recognition for our teachers. Remember your labour is not in vain. Grace and peace be multiplied to all our teachers in Dominica.

And just to let the college lecturers know that they are teachers as well. Don’t be fooled by pride and delete yourselves from the fraternity of teachers.

Oh Please give me a break!
If so why was the venue empty by one o’clock?
What after civil service ceremony did you organize for those who attended?
Don’t you think the church service could have been more inspiring?
Don’t you think the tent could have been bigger?
I wonder if we were at the same service!
