Former grotto resident left stranded and hungry

Thaddeus Jno Charles

A former resident of the Grotto Home for the homeless has been left stranded and without food for three days while the acting supervisor of the institution says her hands are “tied”.

Thaddeus Jno Charles, a 57 year old man who is incapacitated, says “I am hungry and needs a place to sleep and food to eat and the people at the Grotto say they cannot help me.”

However Grotto Home’s Acting Supervisor claims that Jno Charles who left the home on October 8, 2012 “left on his own and to now assist him it must be a board’s decision.I don’t own the place and it is guided by laws, rules and regulations and he is a smoker, it’s a small place he left on his own and to have him back has to be a decision of the board, I cannot take on my own and feed him and have him back,” she told DNO.

When DNO visited Jno Charles he was lying on some pieces of wood in the rain outside in the yard. “I am hungry, I need a place to sleep and food to eat…..I walked from Salisbury to Roseau and I have been there begging but they say they have no place for me,” he said.

This prompted the DNO reporter to get him some much needed food.

one person with knowledge of the institution told DNO that since the Grotto is a home for the homeless, he ought to have been fed. “It is hurtful to see that they basically refused to feed the man….you don’t need a board decision to feed someone who is homeless and hungry,”

Another source suggested that there may be more to the story than meets the eye as the Grotto operates a soup kitchen on a regular basis and Jno. Charles could at least have been fed from that facility.

DNO will continue to follow the story and bring you more information on what happens to Jno. Charles.

I am not a resident of Dominica so this case is not my business. Worse things have happened in my own nation.

My comment here contains general principles that would apply to a similar case any place in the world where DNO is read.

WHAT WOUILD JESUS DO :?: Anything less is not worthy of His name nor the support of God’s people.

A secular agency – government or non-government – will have its rules and regulation to follow. Some people obviously will not qualify for help. However, if an organization professes to be a Christian ministry
under he banner of the cross that represents unconditional love people have a right to expect more from it.

General Booth, founder of the Salvation Army on his death bed said to his next in command. “Go for souls and go for the worst.” “Why the worst?” he was asked. “Because they suffer the most” replied the General.

Purely secular “charitable” organizations may have to stick to their rules.

    Sincerely, Rev. Donald Hill…

This guy once worked at DOWASCO, formerly Central Water Authority, as a Draftsman, while I was an employee there. This is a perfect example of how drugs can ruin someone’s life. Nonetheless, he should not be left hungry.

This man should go back to Salisbury. Jno.Charles is a very big family and they take care of their own. Besides salisbury is a village where people feed their own. He may just be a character with an alterior motive

This is a dumb excuse, what does it take from the home to give him a plate of food. And how long does it take to call the board members and inform them that he the man has returned and he is out there seeking help, especially food, I have through my organisation donated so much food to this organisation, its a shame to here such rediculous statements coming from a person in charge of less fortunate people. You do not have a heart man. So many people empthasized with you when you had your challenges and things are so okay now that you cannot stretch out your hands to a hungry person. People like all you will cause God to turn his back on Dominica. Shame on you mam. I lost the respect and admiration that I had for you. I am a woman just like you and I would never do that to a hungry person. Shame Shame!!!!SHAME……SHAME.

We are NOT blamming and bashing. And YES we are aware of brothers, sisters, families etc, and that he did not just fall from the sky. The POINT is, he is HUNGRY. Regardless to knowing the rules and leaving the home, he SHOULD be fed! Too much food in Dominica for anyone to go hungry.

This is sad it s that hard to give a hungry person a plate of food, I wonder if she would feed a hungry person from her pocket. This is what you call heart. She should use her judgement and help this man I’am sure the board will not penalize for helping the helpless.

jesus ppl the hat he is wearing has nothing to do with the fact that the man is homeless and hungry, please stop this politics nonsense. HE IS HOMELESS, so thus he could have gotten this from someone or even on the street somewhere. stick to issue at hand that a man who is hungry is being refused food. and especially since institutions out there, namely one special hotel gives the grotto home food and also pays them man money to take care if these individuals, it will nnot kill to give someone some food. we are supposed to be our brothers keeper. whoever this supervisor is, you may not be able to take him back but you should have enough authority to give someone a plate of food. so that excuse of board decision is a poor one, but god looks after his children. stay blessed dominicans

We have become a nation filled with greed, hate and envy. We give luxury priority over the Almighty. We claim we love Jesus however, our actions are contrary. The greatest commandment is to love thy neighbor as thyself. Many of us compete with our neighbors, therefore, social ills increase, most who are fortunate enough to assist the oppressed are caught up in their own fairy tale world. Realistically, the Savior walked among and served the poor. The Master is watching!

It is understandable that he m,ay have violated the regulations of the Grotto Home and therefore he cannot be allowed to remain. Rules have to eb followed. However, I believe that the Grotto should at least give him 2 meals a day even if it means that he has to leave after he is fed.

for what reason did this guy leave a place where he knew he would be fed and sheltered.??? I know of a person who was told by one of these guys that he had nothing to eat and she went and bought him a cake, bread, and coffee and he threw it in the gutter in front of her. Then proceeded to scream at her that he wanted the money not food.

These people have hearts of steel. They are in the positions just for their own self interest, position and titles. Like many other institutions, they really do not care about people whom they serve, and it goes back to customer service as well. It is shame that an institution which is assisted publicly and by government would treat a homeless man. Regardless if he left on his own, he is homeless, so feed him already. This is disgrace and everyone on that board should be released.

What have we come to as a Nation that we would see a hungry man in the rain and not shelter nor feed him. I thought we based our existence on being a God fearing Nation, well I have news for you. You will answer before God and he reminds you; when I was hungry you did not feed me, when i was naked you did not clothe me, depart me from me and go into the lake of fire that is prepared for the devil and his angels.

Can someone tell me what all those people with money and businesses doing for Dominica, both socially and economically. The government cannot do everything? However, they can do much better. Can those with money come together, and form a committee that will work in collaboration with restaurants, bakeries, supermarkets and other opulent individuals to establish a soup kitchen which will provide food to the homeless on a daily basis? We are too disorganized, too haughty, and too presumptuous in Dominica. We claim to have so many people with masters and doctoral degrees yet, we are so backward, have no ingenuity, lack progressive thinking abilities and no vision. And this phenomenon runs through the entire population. We are dying for lack of vision. The acting supervisor of the grotto is a typical example of what am speaking about. In the United States, homeless people are encouraged to leave the homes during the day, but they are guaranteed a meal once they are back during the times when food are being served. I personally believe that the private sector is not doing enough to assist in the development of Dominica on a whole. I also believe that the government need to invest much more into those with disabilities and take radical steps to address the problem of homelessness in the country. I also believe that those who are charged with the responsibility of making a difference in the lives of the weak, the poor, and vulnerable must be courageous enough to take their cause to the media in an effort to educate the public about their efforts, their hopes and dreams for those individuals. The government and the acting supervisor of Grotto should be ashamed of themselves for their foolish rules and lack of compassion for the downtrodden.

    • January 8, 2013

Because the love of money is the root of all evil, many persons who can afford to, are reluctant to donate their money into those charities. For the most part of that donation simply goes into the huge salaries of those who run those placed; what is left over is always not enough to do the job that is rightly needed–which is caring for those who are weak and in critical need.

Here we have an acting supervisor who cannot take the responsibility of serving a meal to a hungry homeless person–so what is her job as an acting supervisor at that place?

THIS story BREAKS my heart, because am a counsellor working with the homeless, mental health, and addicts, here in Canada. And I must say, that the Government do take care of their own, meaning those who are less fortunate. And I am going to actually use this story to show my clients how fortunate they are. Because they are able to take a shower, have breakfast, snacks throughout the day, laundry, lunch, and at some places dinner and they still complain its digusting, reading about this, guided byy Law??? are you kidding? the baord has to make a decision,. am really sadden by this. Yhe government of Dominica should have a proper facility to accommodate, and assist our citizens that are less fortunate.Have programming to keep them busy and make them feel like they are part of something, anything. It does not take much,to make another human being feel like they are worth something.Invest in making sure that the right people are taking care of business like they should. SAD,SAD,SAD.

That is “digusting” and “guided by LAW” what Law. I work with homeless and mental health indiviuals on a daily basis in Canada, amd one may be shocked to see how they are treated. Amazingly well. They have a warm breakfast, lunch, showers, landry, and in some places dinner. And the government of DOMINICA can’t find and fund a proper facility to accommodate those in our communities that are less fortunate. On a daily basis we serve at our community kitchen close to 200 homeless, mental health and addicts. So to read this makes me sick. They need to have a place where these less unfortunate people can call home and feel like they are part of something, anything. SAD, real SAD.

Absolute garbage coming from the supervisor. He has one leg and if you had any clue about dealing with people in these situations you would not need a board to tell you feed him and take him back. What this man needs is a meal, place to sleep and psychiatric evaluation. What is wrong with these who only want position for props in Dominica? I volunteer with a homeless people shelter and this pales in comparison to what they can do. You give them clothes and immediately they sell it or throw it away, they leave the homes, rather be on the street but never will they be turned away hungry on the streets. This sickens me to the core.

Disturbing to say the least……..If you cannot at least feed him then where are my annual countributions as a Corporate Citize really going? The Board Certainly needs to provide an immediate explanation. The Grotto Home was set up to help the less fortunate and if this man does not fit the criteria………hmmmmm SMH Taking note…….

Ms Supervisor, that’s exactly what you do. Take him back and feed him. YOU are RIDICULOUS. Because he “left on his own to assist him must be a board’s decision?” It’s true that you don’t own the place, but YOU SUPERVISE the place. So what if it is guided by laws, rules, and regulations, so what if he is a smoker, so what it’s a small place and he left on his own? Why to have him back has to be a board’s decision? He’s homeless, hungry, and on crutches. Yes, you can feed him, yes you can have him sleep, and yes, YOU can CONVINCE the board to not allow our people to be HUNGRY and not have a place to SLEEP. You are a supervisor, SUPERVISE.

  60. January 8, 2013

This is so sad. Working with the Homeless here in New York we are told not to ever turn someone who is homelss away from the facility when they come to seek assistance. The first rule is to ask the person whether they are hungry, whether they had something to eat for the day. If not we have to find them something to eat and all others like a place to stay for the night or temparary shelter will be addressed. In Dominica they cannot be transferred to other shelters. The person should not say her hands are tied and it is the board’s decision to give him a piece of food and some shelter. What a shame. People are free to move around as they please so she should not say that he left on his won. In the shelter client’s leave without saying they are leaving and then they return later. We have to take them back and start the process all over again.

People like that who cannot be humane enough to feed 1 poor and destitute man, should not be in charge of more poor and destitue men.

Imagine – a board decision to give a man some food.

That’s wht Dominica has come too and yet, you guys are surprised by the level of hatred and crime in this tiny island when a plate of food is too much to give a man

I cannot believe that they will let a human being go hungry, Dominica supposed to be a warm, caring nation, now, it has become like Baghdad, Beirut, with more guns and killing, and stealing becomes part of the norm.

What is food, to give a hungry person, if it was a white foreigner, they would have treated him better.

I SAY, if you think feeding him with the organization’s food will cause you your job, then feed him personally and ask for an emergency board meeting

in this little country of ours this is unacceptable it is very simple, if you cannot give him shelter i am 100% sure you can provide him food, ms supervisor I Am sure if it WERE YOUR BROTHER OR SISTER YOUR GIVE THEM FOOD, IF YOU HAVE NO ROOM FOR HIM ALLOW HIM TO SLEEP ON THE PORCH, # SOME PEOPLE HAVE NO HEART

So you mean when alu making food for the others in the home, the board going to fire you if you give him a lil plate? even if is d lil rice that left with no meat? ur conscience not beating you? Nah man! thats shameful!

That supervisor is heartless, policies were not made in stone. Why couldn’t she feed him? Is there more that what is being reported? I suggest that the Board of Directors investigate what is going on. That man needs at least his three meals everyday because being hungry is nothing easier to handle. My heart goes out to this man and i pray that that supervisor will find it in his/her heart to change. Remember in Matthew 25 it reads “37 “Then the righteous will answer him, ‘Lord, when did we see you hungry and feed you, or thirsty and give you something to drink? 38 When did we see you a stranger and invite you in, or needing clothes and clothe you? 39 When did we see you sick or in prison and go to visit you?’

40 “The King will reply, ‘Truly I tell you, whatever you did for one of the least of these brothers and sisters of mine, you did for me.’

That is pure nonsense. To feed a man, it must go to the board. Even if the board decides to take him back, when he comes to the grotto home, it does not hurt the supervisor to give him a plate of food. No wonder they say the grotto Home is under corrupt management. It is hurtful to see how a human being is being treated. I wonder who is cashing his social security checks, if he is getting any. Supervisor of the grotto home, u can do better than that.

The director need’s to be fired on the spot !!

      • January 20, 2015

You are not alone in thinking the director should be fired. There is a less radical solution. She should be made to understand that policy is secondary to relieving a genuine human need and be able to offer temporary help until a longer lasting solution is decided on.

Am I seeing the picture correctly? The man has lost a leg?

He is hungry, wet, cold, and has no place to call home.

Is he being refused help because:

        (1) He is wearing a cap from a particular political party which is likely the only cap he has?

        (2) He smokes? It is probably his only comfort. Do you know how many times he has tried to quit?

        (3) He was staying in the Grotto Home and he left? Those who run Grotto should know the psychology of their work. The people who stay in such shelters are often troubled people. It is not uncommon for them to leave at some point and want to return.

You have to be able to look past people’s faults and see their needs.
