Former Assistant Superintendent of Police, Stewart Burton of Tan Tan is the United Workers Party (UWP) Team Dominica candidate for the Cottage constituency in the upcoming elections.
UWP Leader, Lennox Linton, has confirmed that Burton will contest that seat for the opposition party.
The new candidate told Dominica News Online (DNO) that he is excited to be a part of the UWP team.
“I am excited to be a part of a team, a team that has a vision, one that is able to put things in place and take Dominica forward,” Burton said. “I feel very much part of them and I want to be part of them.”
Burton is confident that the young people in the Cottage constituency support him 100 per cent.
“The young people stood behind me 100 per cent, because while I was a police officer I assisted them. I counseled them, I did a lot of things for them and up to this present time I still assist them,” he explained.
He added, “As a police officer I worked in that constituency and I am living in that constituency. I know all the people in the constituency and we are friends.”
Burton says if he wins the election, he intends to ensure that Cottage becomes a stable constituency.
“Presently at times you will find people of this constituency not stable. You will find that some of them are in fear and there is no work in that constituency. Most of them are unemployed and it would be my duty to ensure that the first priority is to get sustainable work for them,” he stated.
Meantime, the UWP Leader said the party is happy to have Burton onboard.
“We are happy to have Mr. Burton on board with us, he is a man of integrity, an honest man, sincere purpose and willing and able to provide the best quality of representation to the people of Cottage at this time,” he said, “he is a very important addition to the UWP team Dominica.”
According to him, the party believed in having a clean slate of candidates completed “before the bell is rung and we have been able to do that.”
He said that the party is also happy about where they are right now.
“The process of honest engagement with the people of Dominica continues in earnest and we are looking forward to the support of the people of the Cottage constituency,” Linton said. He added, “Today is just a happy day for us where we finally can be able to announce that we have completed our slate of candidates……..We have twenty-one solid candidates all over Dominica willing, ready and able to provide the highest quality of representation…”
Well Reggie that is a turn for the books, isn’t it? I’m sure them people of cottage are at least pleased to have a choice this time. You thought you would win again simply by having no opposition. You will be surprised this time to find you may have outlasted your welcome.

Shame on a man who has been there for over three terms (19 Years) 1995 to 2014 and only now he attending to Morne a louis hill. While on each side of Morn a Louis he have two paytam mamma houses and a piece of land round the corner. Congratulations to Mr. Burton in taking that bold move as I know many Dominicans are afraid to do so. Now, I live in Portsmouth and do not know Mr. Burton personally, saw him around, but the people I spoke to and may know him says that he is a good person and the party did a great job in choosing him. I too am from cottage and I am so happy that we have someone like Mr. Burton as an option. Thank God. I believe that it is important that we do not allow any candidate from any party to win by default. Let there be options and let the people vote according to their choice. I am actually very happy about this.
I am very happy at what I just read. I know this man for a long time and I think he is an honest hard working man with great qualities and integrity. It is high time for people of that constituency to wake up and see that certain Rich people are only getting richer and the poor keep suffering. Wake up and give someone new a chance.
