Free prostate screening for La Plaine men

FreeProstateScreeningMen who are over the age of 40 in Laplaine are being urged to make full use of the free prostate cancer screening coming their way this Saturday.

The Dominica Cancer Society and Ross Medical School are  eaming up in a series of campaigns to provide this service in several communities on the island.

“This sixth campaign will serve the residents of the Laplaine area; however it is open to men from outside the district. The Society is once again encouraging as many men as possible from the area, to come and take advantage of this opportunity”. a release from the Dominica Cancer Society stated.

The screening will take place at the Laplaine Health Centre on Saturday the 6th of July starting at 9:00am.

According to the release “Over 500 men have received free exams through this initiative” and all men are reminded to reverse the trend of their tendency of being “very irregular when it comes to their medical care and therefore, by the time a man experiences symptoms and gets checked, it can be too late.”

“This initiative again appeals to men to be proactive as far as their prostate health is concerned,” the release advised.

The screening activities will include a “digital rectal examination” along with relevant medical check-ups; men will be seen on a first come first serve basis.

The doctors and medical students hope to continue through the afternoon until they have managed to screen all those who attend. Men who attend will have the choice of being screened by either a female or male medical student. At the end of the examination, a report will be given to the attendee with recommendations for his doctor to take appropriate action, if any.

The last campaign was undertaken in the Kalinago Territory.

There is a lot of work to be done. For example I looked up whats PSA and this is what I found out!!! “The Prostate-specific antigen (PSA)test is not completely reliable. For every 100 men with a raised PSA level, only about 30 will have prostate cancer detected in a biopsy. This is called a false-positive result. Also, approximately 15% of men with a normal PSA
level will have prostate cancer. This is known as a false negative result. The amount of PSA in the blood can be high for reasons other than prostate cancer. If the PSA level is high a man may need further tests such as a biopsy, which can be painful and lead to blood in the urine, the semen or bowel motions. In a few men the biopsy can lead to infection of the prostate gland, which can be difficult to get rid of. In 5-10% of men the biopsy will not show cancer even if it is present. Many small prostate cancers detected by PSA screening would never grow enough to cause any symptoms at all during a man’s lifetime.
Many prostate cancers grow very slowly and the side effects from treatment (radiotherapy or surgery) may be worse than the effects of the prostate cancer. If the tests show there is an early cancer it can be difficult to decide whether or not to have treatment.” http://www.macmillan.org.uk/Cancerinformation/Cancertypes/Prostate/Symptomsdiagnosis/PSAtesting.aspx

There is lots of work to be done on that subject matter because even from the number of comments posted you can see that we have a problem in communicating the importance of early prostate screening. Granted that we have a stereo type and negative stigma towards medical anal penetration from our own societal and homophobic upbringing, and we are right in having that stigma because we come from a cultural setting whereby anal penetration is a definite a NO NO!!! However, the time has come for the Ministry of Health to step up its STRATEGY and develop alternative methods in conveying the message because clearly we not getting it. The mere fact of advertising free prostae screening is indeed not working. Eg. How many male medial doctors and ministers of Govt can come on air and say that within the last 3 years they have had their prostate checked.

Oh, Ok. So the Laplaine Health Team has nothing to do with that then? I find they putting so much effort in advertising ad preparation. Please shed a light, thank you.

Do not let them deceive you and scare you. They put fear in people. They copy those progressive countries which have now spread to the islands.
Not all men will develop prostate cancer. Not all women will have cancer and also breast cancer. In general, not every one will get the identical illness.
Surely, another method could be used to test men for prostate cancer.
Live well, eat well, fruits and vegetables, etc.
Do not overdo the sexual act.   I have a strong feeling that this could be a primary cause in addition to using contraceptives.
I do believe that the medical profession is hiding a lot from the general public/patients. They will not address the issue which could cause those types of illnesses.
Let me further inform you, I heard, again, on TV that many women were diagnosed with breast cancer. Their breasts were removed, if only one and they received treatment. Some eventually died. These were wrongly diagnosed. Take charge of yourself and your health.
Dr. Emanuel has some excellent medical information which would be useful. Whenever you see his articles, make good note of them.

Well, it’s good for Ross’s students and good for the GUINEA PIGS too. But will Ross follow up with free treatment if needs be?

And if they should find anything wrong with somebody’s prostate, what next? ultrasound scan AND PSA.
So does what they plan to do make a hell of a lot of sense?

I’m over 40 and I have no interest in anyone pushing their finger up my rare end.
    I do my PSA annually.
Any informed person knows that this is THE screening test. When your PSA is high or you have any of a variety of urinary symptoms suggesting a prostate problem, the finger may be used. But even then, an ultrasound scan of the prostate will tell you what you need to know, even though the best way to do this is through the rectum.

But I’m guessing that is much less painful than the finger.

What this is is practice for the Ross students. It has zero to do with Ross stepping up to any plate!!! Crap

You have a choice not to, but don’t try to discourage guys who want to do it! Stop being ignorant. Does it make a difference who is doing the test as long as it is done with the right intensions and may save lives? It is free you don’t want it, fine.

Talk about ignorant. I have to check my dictionary when I get home to see whose picture is by it. Too bad DNO does not publish photos.

Some people just CANNOT get it.

I wonder why they call it, “Prostate Cancer Screening!” So all they will be looking for is cancer? that alone will scare the men away. Not all prostate problem is associate with cancer. ‘Prostate Screening’ would be more appropriate. Still, i will stop there for a check.
