Dominica firemen seek help to meet medical expenses for one of their own

Fireman Ron Robin who needs additional medical attention for a stroke which he suffered in January

The Dominica Fire Fighters’ Association (DFFA) and the Dominica Fire and Ambulance Services (DFAS) will be conducting several fundraising events over the weekend to assist with the medical expenses of Fireman, Ron Robin, who suffered a stroke on Sunday, January 31, 2021 and has been ill since.

After the incident, the 41-year-old Wesley native was airlifted to Trinidad where he underwent surgery before returning to Dominica. Since his return, he has been receiving medical treatment at the Dominica China Friendship Hospital (DCFH).

Plans are being made for further medical treatment and therapy at the Revamp Comprehensive Rehabilitation Centre in Jamaica for approximately three (3) months at an estimated cost of US$13,000 per month.

Although the officer is a policyholder of the DFAS medical plan,  his expenses to date have exhausted some annual benefits he is entitled to, according to the Secretary of the DFAS, Rose-Annette Peltier.

“A few events have been organized for this weekend starting with our Friday Barbecues this Friday 23rd April from 11 am at Brigade Headquarters. A Market Day where local produce will be available for sale on Saturday 24th April from 6 am at Brigade Headquarters parking lot and a drive-by sale along the Loubiere Highway to Scotts Head,” Peltier indicated.

On Sunday 25th April, the team will be hiking Segment 4 of the Waitukubuli National Trail -Pond Case to Sylvania – where a contribution of $20 will be accepted from all hikers. The hike will begin at the Fire and Ambulance Services  headquarters at 7 am.

For further information, persons are advised to contact the Public Relations Officer (PRO) of the Firefighters Association, Fire Officer Misha Ophar,  at 1 767-612-1119 or 266 4400.

“We are counting on your support as we seek to support our brother Fire Officer, Ron Robin,” Peltier stated.

Home is home and Dominica is home sweet home but when health emergencies are factored into the equation, it’s a different scenario all together and can be scary.

why Jamaica? what’s going on at the State of the Art hospital? what’s the difference with Princess Margaret Hospital? So many questions.

Dominica is a nice place to live if you are healthy and are flush with cash. If you don’t have either it could be hell on earth.

This is a place where, at the first sign of a disruption from normal, you could be sunk.

So a man that risking his life to keep the country safe, our leaders cannot contribute 13k towards his expenses? But feel 64k is justified else where?

This is somebody that risk his life for us on a regular basis – a service much more valuable and practical that that of the PM. Put things in perspective, it is a shame that someone like this should have to go through all of this to raise funds. Shame on our leaders!

Fireman we appreciate your contribution and we will support you in your time of need! Where is the link to contribute?

May the fireman, Mr. Ron Robin get the treatment that is required to restore him to good health.

There is an urgent need for comprehensive national insurance so that public servants will not have to rely on charity in the event of a medical emergency.

There is much more to governance than erecting concrete monstrosities that locals will never own and use as collateral to procure loans.

The few oligarchs that run the country headed by Tony and Skerrit his errand boy, Dominicans will always be considered and regarded as third class citizens. Tony, Roosevelt and the doltish members of Cabinet – First Class Citizens; the Chinese, wealthy International fugitives and investors – Second Class Citizens, the born and bred Dominicans – Third Class Citizens

The present regime gives themselves and their foreign accomplices the best and choicest resources of the country then gives bona fide Dominicans water to carry in a basket.

You know the sad thing about it is that this man a civil servant employed by the government is reduced to the status of a begger.
As far as I know usually in the civil service there are other benefits that comes along with the retirement pension.
That includes accidents, and other health issues such as Robin is suffering now.
I do not wish to politicize his experience, but something such as a stroke the most likely treatment is a regiment of blood thinner and physical therapy (exercises).
That should be easily accomplished in Dominica.
My cousin and his cousin Athena have enough to take care of all his medical expenses.

He was first flown to Trinidad it seems.
My question is “”What can this new hospital Skerrit brags about provide””? It’s really heart wrenching to see and hear so many of our people having to beg for help to undergo medical care abroad, yet lying Skerrit keeps babbling about a new hospital. This man, Skerrit, is heartless, and really does not care about the people… Why part of our CBI cannot be used to equip the hospital? Skerrit takes pride in seeing people suffer…Again just what services exactly can this new hospital provide?
I can clearly recall Skerrit telling labourites he can travel abroad to take care of himself medically, what about you all?????
The so called labourites all started to clap!
Well, come the ending of April, ill contribute something as little as it is because i know what being sick is.

What is a hospital? While we may have a building with equipment we are missing the Staffing.
