Parliamentary representative for Roseau Central, Joseph Isaac, is calling on victims of abuse to report the matter to the police.

Isaac was addressing the 27th Annual General Meeting (AGM) of the Dominica National Council of Women (DNCW) held at the National Development Foundation of Dominica (NDFD) on Monday.

He said he is concerned over statistics highlighted by the council concerning abuse in Dominica.

“As my esteemed colleague earlier highlighted some of the statistics affecting women in regards to the financial sexual and physical abuse, we must guard against that,” Isaac stated. “We as men and women in Dominica must stand against it, take a stand and where appropriate report to the police and if we can’t or are afraid to report, I’m asking you to talk to a friend talk to a member of your family so that we can eliminate those challenges women face in Dominica.”

According to Isaac everyone in Dominica must advocate on behalf of women.

“It is because women are our first leaders, our first leaders as parent, grandparents and our first leaders as the rock of the family,” he noted. “Every man and other women must understand that we must advocate on gender balance and empowering women in Dominica and the world.”

He also urged persons to understand the success of women and to highlight some of them.

Isaac called on the Government, private sector and NGO organizations to stand with the DNCW to ensure that its work programme for this year and beyond can be achieved.

As I am aware of, Dominica being a small country where nearly everyone knows everyone, those affected may find it difficult to report it especially if some are prominent people.
These people must know that abuses of any nature are no longer acceptable in the D/can society. They must be educated accordingly.
Keep these abuses in the limelight and through the Media. Probably it could deter those who have such abuse tendencies. Dominica will be a better place for it.
If some continue to practice these abuses, do not hesitate to report it and have them prosecuted.
Police Officers must honor their positions and the people’s trust in them. They must be educated accordingly that they do not ignore and caste aside the complaints of D/cans who are so affected.

Be careful of tarnishing the good name of others.
The Eighth commandment of God: Thou shalt not bear false witness against thy neighbor.
You should tell us what he stated so that we can form our own opinion if he did in fact make a pass at a young girl.

It is human nature for men and women to be attracted to the opposite sex, and that is unless they are homosexual. Simply because someone is in politics does not mean he/she must suppress their human sexual feelings for the opposite sex.

God created a woman to be a comforter to a man? If he met someone he has feelings for, should politics prevent him from expressing his feelings toward that woman? Now she is in control of it all, she has the power to accept his advances or reject it.

If he was in a position where he used his office to seduce, and take sexual advantage of her as some politicians we know in the present government, has done that would be a another issue, as for the claimed comment “you do not know who I am” and the rest of the baloney; I do not believe, someone is trying to create a scandal!

Isaac, what is the difference in physical and mental abuse, manslaughter, or murder? There is a vast difference. First of all there are countless ways in which one can be abused by another person. One can abuse another never touching the abused with one single finger. Leaving someone unfed (without food) is a form of abuse, not taking care of children, and the elderly is also abuse; so too one can be abused by an employer if they are underpaid.

A man or woman, using profanities on their wife/husband in a humiliating way is also abuse, to be honest about it, sexual abuse of anyone is in a different category, some people are abused sexually and do not know it.

My question here is this; if a woman is beaten by someone, a man, and the woman died as a result of that vicious beating she suffered, and the matter is reported to the police shouldn’t police do what’s necessary to arrest and charge the perpetrator with murder or manslaughter?

Last year, a guy mercilessly beat one of my niece, she succumbs to the injuries she sustained to her head, she bleed internally, the murderer fled to St. Lucia; Dominica police are aware of his whereabouts, and has done nothing to bring him back to stand trial for murder. So, what is the point of anybody reporting any abuse, be it physical, or mental to the an institution (the police) when they ignore the reports when they are made.

A few years ago, my older sister was beaten by her half brother, by father, he almost killed her, she went to the police in Wesley, and reported, only to be informed by the police, that the perpetrator, and the victim are relatives, and the police does not interfere in family matters! I suppose if he killed her they would let him go free. I am not suggesting that people should not report abuse, nevertheless, when they do, the police becomes more or less an obstacle between the victims and justice; unless examples are made out of a few abusers, and…

Unless examples are made out of a few abusers, and those who disrespect the life of others abuse will continue forever in our country! Find the abusers heavily, in addition to long term incarceration, murder or manslaughter, bail should never be granted, and if executions are no longer utilized in punishment; mandatory life sentences should be executed!

When this happens you report to the police station the next day with a newspaper reporter intent on getting the full story. If this does not work contact your nearest T.V. station and go with a camera crew.

Talk to the editor first and ask him to assign his best investigative reporter to the case. The public who pays the cop’s salary need to know about this. It is the worst police corruption imaginable. It is an open invitation for vigilante justice. In fact I cannot believe somebody has not already taken the matter into their own hands.

Dominican women don’t face any challenges. Right now it’s men who are suffering from extreme psychological and physical abuse at the hands of women.
