ACM makes call for media unity in Dominica

Interim committee of a new association formed to represent media workers in Dominica

Former Assistant Secretary-General of the Association of Caribbean MediaWorkers, Anika Kentish, has called on media practitioners to work harder in bringing themselves together.

She made the call on the weekend during a presentation to local journalists who lost equipment during the passage of Hurricane Maria.

She stated that the ACM is a network of national associations and she urged the local media community “to work together and to work much harder in bringing yourselves together under a bold united umbrella.”

“We are concerned that the national association here has been unable to get on itself back on its feet and we are concerned that this is happening at a time of a national crisis,” she stated.

Kentish pointed out that it is important for all journalists to show there is a united effort in promoting media development in Dominica.

“We are hoping that Dominica is represented at the next general assembly of the Association of Caribbean MediaWorkers, carefully constituted and a truly representative body,” she remarked.

The now defunct Media Workers Association of Dominica (MWAD) remains the only recognized body for media workers on the island.

Recently a new body, The Dominica Press Corp, was launched and is hoping to be the body to represent media workers in Dominica.

The presentation of laptops and cell phones to the local media workers was made possible by Free Press Unlimited and the US office of Reporters Without Borders.

:?: Once media people, persons and personnel are involved in partisan politics, they can never be free, fair, objective and united! I don’t expect these bias partisan media personnels to report on anything affecting the island, once it’s done by the politicians they support, especially when they’re in power!!,

The media have a powerful influence on the hearts and minds of the communities they serve. It is imperative that they are positive, veracious and non-partisan. In Dominica, almost every influential institution or organization is politically radioactive. I objectively and vigorously submit that the National Broadcasting Radio &Television Stations should not be propaganda tools of any government or opposition. DBS specifically, should give voice of all responsible citizens and not just for the government’s propagandists. If Dominica are to experience true democracy, realize its true potential, and soar to unprecedented heights, the bitter anti-progressive partisan politics that is responsible for the deep seated hatred and perpetual disunity MUST be brought to an end. Is the Skerrit’s regime capable of effecting this revolutionary thinking? Judging from the past and present actions of his leadership, the conclusion is quite obvious, a resounding NO.
