Astaphan sends warning to critics of PM Skerrit

Astaphan warned of 'fanaticism' on the 'other radio station'
Astaphan warned of ‘fanaticism’ on the ‘other radio station’

Senior Counsel Tony Astaphan said he has advised Prime Minister Roosevelt Skerrit to put a legal team together to deal with recent allegations made against him.

Astaphan, one of the government’s top legal advisors, made that statement while speaking as a guest on State-Owned Radio DBS, on Tuesday.

He warned that the country cannot allow the continuation of this “fanaticism” on the “other radio station” where, “they attack country, institutions, politicians, presidents, individuals, private individuals, relentlessly and mercilessly and get away with it.”

In recent times, there has been a number of allegations directed against Skerrit, with the latest being an article “From Rags to Riches? In search of Roosevelt’s Skerrit millions” being circulated on the internet.

It alleges that operators of offshore companies in the UK have close connections to the Prime Minister and may be the source of “what has been rumored to be significant wealth quietly amassed over the years.”

Last week, the Prime Minister denied the allegations while speaking as a guest on the ‘Focus on Government and Development’ program on DBS Radio last week.

Astaphan said he has told Skerrit that he should put a legal team together to deal with the allegations.

“I have indicated to the Prime Minister, that I have resolved, that we can put together a legal team if it means getting people from overseas to ensure that the free pass in previous years does not continue,” he said. “I also said to the Prime Minister that, you cannot sue for everything and your supporters must not be angry or disappointed if you don’t sue for everything.”

He said the decision rests only on the Prime Minister.

“I cannot make the decision to go forward, I can merely advise on the way forward and I think that our advice is being taken as to which option has been decided. I suppose the Prime Minister will have to tell me eventually as his counsel…” Astaphan noted.

According to him, a variety of options are available to the Prime Minister.

“We have spoken to the Honourable Prime Minister about a variety of options available to him. He has indicated that he is very close to a decision and obviously that decision is going to be communicated to me…” Astaphan noted.

You can preach corruption from now until dooms day all Tony is saying is that you will have to bring the FACTS in the court of law. You guys are so use to paying money to the courts that it becomes second nature. Edison James was the first to pay Seventy plus thousand Dollarsfor lying Linton has gone to court several times and lost for lack of evidence the latest one being $80000.00 when will they ever learn WHEN WILL THEY EVER LEARN. I keep on hearing that Dominica is poor and have no money this latest radiothon proves differently so when one hears statements on Q95 take it with a pinch of salt

If Skerritt have nothing to hide why is his Government nullifying the powers of the Integrity Commission. If people are operating with honesty and integrity then they would have any fears of being held accountable. Go figure

Wow, why are you writing such nonsense. Why didn’t you check your facts first before you write a comment like this. The Government has done nothing to nullify the powers of the Integrity Commission, to nullify something is the act of making something “void or zero-like”. If this is your understanding or information you received regarding the latest legislation pertaining to The integrity Commission, it shows reckless and gross ignorance on your part.

That is news to me that mr. Astaphan resides in Antigua. What I do know is that he and his wife have a home in Weston, nr. Fort Lauderdale in Florida. Are you telling us that he has three residences, one in st. Aroma, one in Antigua and and one is Weston? Good luck to him, he must be doing well.

Tony, be careful what you wish for. You have far more to lose than our poor people because they have nothing already. Don’t tempt fate please. We really do not want a repeat of 1978. That would not benefit anyone and put our country even deeper in a hole.

  9. January 13, 2016

Tony, you must be out of your mind to think you can intimidate us. We will continue to expose he corruption in Dominica. You and prime minister Skerrit are evidently upset about our latest revelations, but you must understand that we stand by our reporting. The documents we have revealed to the public are genuine, and you have admitted that. You may be able to cajole the press in Dominica, but you are toothless when it comes to us. Our blog is protected by Article 10 of the European Convention of Human Rights, something you cannot do anything about. We value Freedom of Speech here even though you may not in Dominica. You live in Florida; do you know that you cannot muzzle us in the USA as well? Any portion of our blog that may show up on US servers are protected under the First Amendment of the US Constitution. No law no constitution will not work here as well. So hush.

Your comment displays such arrogance from someone who claims to be an Editorial Director. Your arrogance also displays a lack of knowledge and understanding regarding the laws which you are so quick to mention that gives you protection as a blogger. As a blogger you can be sued for libel and defamation you are not protected by jurisdiction. As Blogger you have duties and responsibilities. You’re quick to mention Article 10 of the European Convention of Human Rights but did you read section 2 regarding duties and responsibilities. You need to also read the code of ethics regarding blogging. Stop the arrogance, it can be a creature which loses it senses with it’s sharp tongue pointing fingers. It is important to always tell the truth and make sure your opinions are portrayed as opinions and not as fact.

Freedom of speech , freedom of expression. …… Is Dominica becoming a a militant state or a dictatorship?
Whenever the Pm is out of line he will be reminded of his role as pm…
If the Pm would just do what his office require of him, he would be safe
But there are to many unanswered questions. …
Make a long story short: if the pm has no cocoa in sun he should not fear the rain……
Dominicans must not be intimidated by anyone…

Skerrit can use his mouth and people can not say their opinion freely? That is a receipt for disaster, believe me. Tell Skerrit, we are all watching him because he is the leader and tell him so when we think he is wrong because it are the people that put him there. If he can not stand the heat he should not be in the kitchen. We can always find another chef and do not have to eat in Skerrit’s restaurant.

Tony Astaphan, the Prime Minister does not need a legal team to help try to shut Dominicans up from inquiring about matters of state. If Mr Skerritt just starts treating the citizens of the country with respect,he will provide information as his predecessors did and which he feels he does not have to do.Why don’t you advise him to do the right thing? With regards to the allegations made against the PM,why doesn’t he use the power of his position and launch investigations to clear the air and give the proof to the Dominican public that his hands and his intentions are clean. That will endear him to many more people and strengthen his hand politically.
You want Me Skerritt to sue Dominicans over every statement they make about him which is 100% factually correct.Answer me this, hasn’t Mr Skerritt made untrue statements about anybody else?I’m sure he has,so you are just using Mr Skerritt to make money for yourself, and dividing Dominicans and leading our politics in a dangerous…

KiKi maybe if more UWP supporters would have pull their enormous resources together as we are seeing in the past couple of days, just maybe their help in the areas that were devastated by TS Erika, just maybe we would have seen reconstruction even faster.

Though we must admit the PM and the Government and our numerous friends who really care for Dominica came together to help Dominica in very good time. We still have many communities need help but with the Grace of God we will get there.

We should never again hear any UWP supporter say how things are bad after the telethon we can never believe those calling the radio station crying that things are so bad. I guess we can truly say, the economy under this PM and the DLP cannot be as bad as the UWP are trying to make us believe. Wouldn’t we agree?

Tony there cannot be a fire without an arch, even when we are dealing combustible materials! Anything said about Skerrit: Skerrit is the cause, he is the one who brings these things upon himself I do not think as a legal professional you should be encouraging Skerrit to take ever petty nonsense to court. If Gonzalez of St. Vincent had to take people to court over made allegations, he would have taken every man woman and child in St. Vincent to court.

All of this is not necessary, if the idea is to breath fear into the citizens of Dominica, that sort of thing will eventually cause a revolution in the country, and who knows who will get killed! Lawyers are not…

He does not have to prove any allegations wrong. He can sue. The question is, can you stand up in Court and prove it?
Consider Lennox Linton. He now has to pay $80,000 for libel. It is time some of you are made to pay for your mouths, your fingers to the keyboard. Much of what you state is throwing words at the PM and accusing him about what you heard. It is wicked and willful, to harm his reputation. Some of you have been doing much of that for a while. You are disrespectful and unfair to the PM. Only in Dominica you could get away with this. it is time to cease. How would you like others to make such innuendos against you. I bet, you would not like it.
If you. UWP supporters have an axe to grind, do so through legal channels; not consistently so on this Website and through other Media as a form of mapwee and to tarnish the PM’s character.

I read what was stated. At no time did Tony speak for Dominicans. He is speaking on behalf of the PM or for the PM. He is the PM’s Senior Counsel. He has a right to do so. In fact what he stated is neutral. He said it is left to the PM what he wants to do.
Tony is warning some of you who continue to tarnish the reputation of the PM and make innuendos through the Media, what the repercussion will be, once the PM decides on a manner of action. Take note!

The Prime Minister has a Minister of Foreign Affairs who is very familiar with Government Departments in Britain, why not immediately dispatch her to London to discuss the many documents that are printed on the various new papers and the blogs. His name is not mentioned in the documents, but two citizens of Dominica are mentioned and more particularly the mother of his first child. Tony is not clear at all. This statement is technically confusing:
“Senior Counsel Tony Astaphan said he has advised Prime Minister Roosevelt Skerrit to put a legal team together to deal with recent allegations made against him.”
Tony, what exactly you want Skerrit to put a legal team in place for? 1. Is it to defend himself against allegations made against him, because you feel something is coming against him?
    2. “I also said to the Prime Minister that, you cannot sue for everything and your supporters must not be angry or disappointed if you don’t sue for everything.” If he cannot sue for everything, then why you want him to put legal team in place? 3. Putting one and one together must I conclude that the reason for the legal team is to defend himself against the woes that are coming?

You are very unclear and even sound like that of a drunk man.

Mr. Astaphan is advising our dear and beloved Supreme Leader to put together a legal team, prepared to go on the attack against anyone who seeks to expose the wrongdoings of the Government (Dr, Roosevelt M. Skerrit). Mr. Astaphan also advised the P.M. that he does not have to sue for EVERYTHING!!! It makes us wonder why Mr. Astaphan, a man who loves to sue so much, is advising his client to be conservative about filing suits. Well, maybe in certain instances a law suit may do far more damage to Dr. Skerrit than good. It is, however, being rumored that a serious bombshell is about to drop on the head of Dr. Skerrit in the very near future. Sources are implying that the coming revelation is so devastating that it may just be the straw that breaks the proverbial camel’s back. Amen! And how about that law suit the govt. and all Ministers brought against Lennox Linton accusing him of calling them prostitutes? Mr. Skerrit’s name is on that but did he ever bother to turn up in court to face Lennox Linton. Mr. Astaphan , we are calling your bluff.

I left Dominica and hated UWP, because MAmo was all I wanted. I come back to Dominica and everywhere i go people showing me Skeritt owns this. All i see in Dominica is rum shpo rum shop. No bananas, limes , fruits spoiling on the ground. But what made me most ashame is the winter olympics. At my job i am the only black west indian in my departmwnt. Everyone knows I am from Dominica. The monday after the olympics I wlaked into my office . MY office and the legal department are next to each other. And i met them all discussing dominica and passport selling and the people at the winter olympics, and they kept asking me who is doing this to your country why are they seloling passports. people meet me in the elevator at work and ask me why are they doing this to your country. This made me angry and thus my hate for PM

You do well to make people let you hate you your country. America and the rest of the European countries are so corrupt and people dare not talk about them. I love my country and her people unconditionally. Other countries are afraid of our potential don’t worry about them.
