Attempted arson at Catholic chapel disturbs clergyman

Fr. Herman Sharplis

Dominicans have been called upon to assist the Portsmouth police with investigations into reports of vandalism and attempted arson at a Catholic chapel.

The Chapel of Our Lady of Guadelupe in Borne which serves many Catholics in the north was reportedly vandalized over the weekend.

Parish Priest, Father Herman Sharplis, says while the incident will not dampen the people’s spirits, it is very disturbing.

He is hoping that the perpetrators will come forward and confess to the crime which he said is “ungodly”.

“This morning when the cleaner went to conduct her duties about 6 o’clock, she found glasses broke all over. We noticed that someone tried and succeeded in throwing stones up to the front of the building, breaking at least four glass louvers. We also noticed a Carib Beer bottle containing a wick and fire which was thrown into the building. However, we realized the fire didn’t get into the building,” he said.

The clergyman is hoping that the perpetrators will come forward and confess to the crime.

“This is a serious matter and these are things we never know would happen in our place. We want to appeal to the public to help the police because such a person is not welcomed in our place,” he said.

According to Fr. Shaplis the Chapel was blessed in 2011 and has been a wonderful place of worship for the Catholics in Borne and other nearby communities.

“This is not going to dampen our spirits. We will continue to use the chapel; it’s a wonderful place of worship, it has brought new energy, vitality and a sense of pride for the people who use it. We are very saddened but this will not deter us,” he stated.

We want to appeal to the public to help the police because such a person is not welcomed in our place,” he said.

Such a person should be welcome because that person need prayers. Jesus Christ did not come for the prefect he came for the no goods/sinners. A candlelight vigil needs to be done.

Violence against the church is wrong I would not go for that, the community needs to come together and form a vigil.

The person is not welcomed due to the nature of what the person did. The person is a criminal. If the person approaches the Priest or telephones him and repent, he will be welcomed.
The person who did that obviously hates the Catholic Church. I wonder if the person whom I expect to be a man (no discrimination here against men; we do know that most crimes are committed by men and young ones at that), was not a baptized Catholic and once attended the Catholic Church?
I do not expect him to set foot in the Church/Chapel unless he is a hypocrite and may be up to no good.
Do you not know what they do to churches? Have you not heard?
We know that Our Lord will welcome them. If you know what Our Lord taught, He had no time for those who rejected him. He said, “Hear and understand. Who has ears ought to hear.” He walked away from some of them. And there is more in the Holy Bible.
Our Lord also said, “Do not give what is holy to the dogs or your pearls to the swine lest they trample upon it and tear you to pieces.”
What does God have in common with the devil/his enemies? This is in the Holy Bible.
Some of you take one part of Holy Scriptures and throw it at others while you ignore the rest which are equally important.

This is very wrong and should not be tolerated. We also need to look at the other side of the coin, our catholic church has been challenged with the priest that we once look to for morale guidance has lost all their values to the likes of political leaders. This is the kinds of things that happens when persons get frustrated with the systems. We believe that if we support a political party we cannot say when something is wrong. I have been to church on numerous ocassions and the priest actually preach politics, both sides. THe religious leaders have more to be blamed than the political leaders cause the have lost their morality.
Therefore we should re-examine our roles in society as leaders and lets strive for a better country for our children to grow in a safe and morale environments.
The colors are killing the morale fiber of society.

Well that’s where you are wrong, you should look to GOD and yourself for guidance not a man in a dress or a hyped up clown calling himself pastor sprining from one side to the next blabbing incessantly.

However that is no excuse irrespective of what they preach for any person to vandalize or set fire to the building. They can do just the same under a tree and may even stregthen in membership because others stand in solidarity. Violence is never a way to solve a problem.

        Tut-Tut all right.

He is a practicing Catholic and you are a practicing nothing. You will not comprehend the role of the priest. The priest is no little person, to be compared to you and any man on the street.
The priest is consecrated. You are a human being in the world and as you said you are not religious. Therefore, these godly spiritual matters are hidden from you.
As in Holy Scriptures, “If our Gospel is veiled, it is veiled for those who are perishing; that God blinded the eyes of the unbelievers…”
The priests represent Our Lord Jesus Christ. They are to be accorded due dignity and respect. Catholics are to hold them in high esteem due to their status as consecrated priests who celebrate the Holy Mass in memory of Our Lord Jesus Christ’s Life, Death, Crucifixion and Resurrection. They are our spiritual directors.
Please give them the respect they are due.

        @Tut-tut

You advised the person not to look to man for guidance, but to God alone. I would imagine that you are thinking Spiritual guidance, so you are right on.

God is Spirit who give us Life, and He calls us to worship Him in Spirit and in Truth–not by the rules and regulations of man’s wisdom and philosophy.

At our time of worship to Him God feeds that sleeping and starving soul of ours, to bring us to the awakenihg of Life in the Spirit, having fed us with the spiritual food, which is the Bread of Life in Jesus Christ. Jesus tells us that this Bread stays good in us, always, and it gives us Eternal Life.

Faith is the channel by which God feeds us to Life–the Life that is of the Spirit–as we continue to remain alive in Jesus Christ. Our guidance, teaching, and protection in Life, come by the power of Holy Spirit, who is our comforter through our faith in Jesus Christ, as God promised us through Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob.

In a Christian church–regardless of it denomination–everyone, including pastors, preachers, priests, and bishops, are in the same process of attaining spiritual fulfillment, as we are all part of the Body of Jesus Christ, He is the head, so no one is greater than the other as in Jesus’ body.

Take it from me, I know what I am speaking about, having been anointed by Holy Spirit, since 14 years ago–and I know the truth of God Almighty and His Word in the Bible.

There are many leaders of the churches–whoever they are–who do not know this anointing in their lives. Jesus has told us that “He is the Way, the Truth, and the Life, and no one can come to the Father but by Him” and that means Him alone, as He is the Living God among us, by the Power of Holy Spirit.

As people of God, or human beings on a the whole, we are to show respect for the lives and property of others like ourselves, no matter what our ranks are.

But when it comes to Life itself, in the Spirit–God Almighty is the Person, whom we ought to worship, He is the Living God among us, watching our every moves, by the Power of Holy Spirit–not like an “it” in a box, as those who are not spiritually sensitive think about Him.

If the priests do not speak up against certain matters, they will be criticized. When they speak up they are criticized and by very Catholics. No matter what they say, they cannot please you. The saying, “Darned if I do and darned if I don’t.”
They have a duty first to God, then to their congregation. They are not answerable to their critics. They are answerable to their superiors and to God who knows, sees and hears all things.
I have heard priests speak about certain matters which concern every one, abortion, recognition of homosexuals, so-called same sex marriage, euthanasia, prostitution and other immoralities. If the government is in the process of legislating such immoralities and then legislated same, they will speak up. They have to speak up to their congregation. Our Lord Jesus Christ said, “If we say nothing, even the stones will cry out.”
As a Catholic, be faithful to the Church. Do not regard the priests in a negative manner. This is not love for God and love for the Church and appreciation of what the good priests are doing. They are not all one and the same. In the same manner some men who got married did not remain faithful to their vows.
There is a tendency to overlook all the sins of the world, what is taking place in one’s household while looking at those priests, the fallen ones who are in the minority. There are far more divorces in the world than there are fallen priests.
Those who also do not recognize and worship God and say that they are not religious, woe to them when they die. They will see their error to their eternal detriment.
We must teach and remind people of these things – St. Paul. We must stand up for the truth and not water it down. There are those who do not want to hear the truth. They will insult those who stand up for God, for the faith, for the truth and for morality.
Our Lord Jesus Christ said, “Be not afraid! Do not fear them!” Let them continue in their spiritual ignorance and insult God’s people. In time, they will pay for it. Their lot will be in Satan’s cauldron of everlasting fire.

For God’s sake, this is Dominica and not a communist country. The devil is in the offing. If someone could do such harm to a church, they must possess the devil. They should think that God saw them and knows who did it and God will severely punish that person.
You will not escape. The gates of Hell in Satan’s cauldron of everlasting fire will be your lot if you do not repent and make restitution in the form of worship, prayer, penance and sacrifice.
Our Dear Lady of Guadeloupe has also seen you. She protects her Church. I am appealing to her to keep close watch of her Church of which she is The Mother. In any case, I do not have to ask her. She is doing it.
To those who wish to harm the Church and who harm it, do not mess around with our God and His Church. Know that God is allowing you to condemn yourself straight to Hell. Otherwise he could strike you down immediately. Even while you are alive and as you age, you will not see good days and times. This is the curse you place on yourself and your household for interfering with God’s Palace and His people.
Be gone Satan into the cauldron of everlasting fire which is prepared for you and your fallen angels and all those who do not live godly lives as persecuting God’s Church and people, through your pride, disobedience and rebelliousness. Pride comes before the fall.
St. Michael the Archangel defend us in the day of battle. Be our safeguard against the wickedness and snares of the devil. May God rebuke him, we humbly pray. And do thou O Prince of the Heavenly Host, by the power of God caste down into Hell, Satan and all other evil spirits who wander through the world seeking the ruin of souls. Amen!
St. Michael the Archangel, pray for us!
Guardian and Patron of the Universal Church, pray for us!
Prince of the Heavenly Host, pray for us!
May God guard and protect His Church and His people, in Jesus Name I pray, through His Most Precious Blood.
Our Lady of Guadeloupe, pray for us. Protect and keep guard over your beloved Church and Ones! Amen!

Let us tell it like it is. The person was spurred on by Satan, the prince of darkness, the author and father of lies and deceit, the detractor and destroyer of souls. Satan does not sleep and so do those who do his dirty work, creating havoc and lack of peace in the land. They are evil and restless.

  13. October 8, 2012

First of all this is very wrong for anyone to attack any place of worship. Shame on the person or persons that did such ungodly act.
Secondly, Father Shaplis made a statement that needs some attention. He said, ” This is a serious matter and these things we never know would happen in our place.” I wish to remind Father Shaplis that (a) we are living in the last days and Jesus said that iniquities would abound (b) I also want to remind him and our religious leaders that the evils we fail to condemn will come back to hunt us. They had many opportunities to condemn wrong doings by those in authority and they said nothing. Also, they never said a thing about the Christmas fire. So the ugly snake might just be attacking them now.
Also father Shaplis, in encouraging people to assist the police, you made a statement that leaves me wondering. You said, “Because such a person is not welcomed in our place.” However, it such a person that is welcomed as jesus said that He did not come to call the righteous but sinners to repentace because it is not those that are healthy that need the physician but those that a sick like that person or persons.

I think that you are talking nonsense. It is not your position to cast judgement or to try to interpret anyones thoughts or feelings. Leave that to God. Your main focus should be on helping find the individual who did this and educated them on the purpose of religion regardless of your religion, and places of worship. Obviously, this person is ignorant and needs help. There is nothing wrong with the priest consulting or trying to work with the prime minister. Maybe something good can come out of this. Nobody is perfect, not you, not the prime minister and not Fr. Shaplis. One Love my friend!

If you are a religious person, I would like to see you welcome someone to your home who placed arson in your yard, want to burn down your house and destroy your property and may try to kill you. Would you welcome him/her and shake hands with them?
The person may be waiting for another opportunity to do more harm. Would you trust that person? If he approaches the priest with humility and a contrite heart, this is another story but then again some people pretend and disguise their manners only to turn around and harm others. Who can trust them?
The problem with some of you is that you do not read between the lines. You misinterpreted the words. You must think and evaluate those words prior to criticizing the priest. I fully comprehend what he stated and what he meant. You lack godly spiritual enlightenment. I am not repeating what I previously stated.

As much as I criticize organized religion on here, I could never condone actual violence against religious persons, art, or their places of worship. That is barbaric in almost every circumstance (unless there is an extraordinary reason for doing such things, which would truly be extraordinary). Shame on the persons involved. There were likely far better ways of getting a message across.

      @ Freethinker

The Catholic Church is not an organized religion. Whoever thought of that is totally wrong. You need to get your records straight. Many people are brainwashed by some people who are the enemies of the Catholic Church, those who formed their own religion, church throughout the ages to today. They do not know better than the Catholic Church. They have their own opinion which does not represent the Catholic Church. They cannot speak on behalf of the Catholic Church. They might as well keep silent.
Obviously, the Catholic must have a head, hierarchy. Every establishment/business/ enterprise of the world has a head.
The Catholic Church is not a business organization. It is about God’s business. It is not a democracy or a democratic government.
The Catholic Church is not even a denomination. It did not evolve from any church. It was established by Our Lord Jesus Christ 2000 years ago when He said to Peter, “Thou art Peter and upon this Rock I will build My Church…” He said this to no other non-Catholic church.
It is something that some of you will never comprehend because your brains are blocked and your eyes are veiled to the truth. The only one who is capable of making you comprehend is Our Lord Jesus Christ Himself. He will have to grant you this enlightenment only if you are open to the truth. He knows your heart and what is imbedded in your heart. My suggestion is that you pray to him for this enlightenment.
Catholic means universal. It was Our Lord’s intention and always will be that there be only one Church on earth. Some members of humanity caused this division and disunity which has also produced lack of love and peace.

Catholicism, first of all, is unquestionably an organized form of Christianity, which is a religion; I am against all religions I am aware of, not just because, but because I have evaluated the evidence for them quite extensively. But if that is not enough for you, I will be clearer: I am against theism. I’m not against deism, however.

None of this, however, is relevant to my point that I would not condone the violence in this article or physical violence of any sort except in a truly exceptional–and hence very unlikely–situation. You, Justice, are a religious zealot, and I have no interest in arguing with you, since it is you, not me, who is blinded. I honestly evaluate everything I come across as fairly as I can; you simply dismiss anything that disagrees with your religious views without any further consideration. That is not rational and makes you unworthy of having a discussion with me or anyone else.

Justice, I am sorry to tell you that Peter wasn’t a catholic and nowhere in the Bible that any specific religion is mentioned. My eyes are not veiled, nor my ears blocked. You are the one!!!

    • October 9, 2012

      @Freethinker

I am glad to read that you do not condone to that action, which was committed against that Chapel, and you are right as well, that “there were likely far better ways of getting the message across”–that is if those who were involved in that conduct had any productive message at all–and I doubt that they did!

However, it is not that I blame you for thinking of the Catholic Church as “organized religion”–for example what is that about “The Chapel of Our Lady of Guadeloupe”? Who are those so called “Ladies” in the Roman Catholic Church, pertaining to God of Spirit and Holiness?

Perhaps that is the reason for the disrespect and bad conducts of Church people of the Roman Catholic, among other churches; those people are not taught to think spiritually, to enchant spiritual awareness or sensitivity of the mind, that they might practice to worship God in Spirit and Truth, but that is the teaching of Jesus Christ to His Church at John 4: 24

Christianity is not about religion; the true concept is based on a personal or intimate relationship with God Almighty, through faith in His only begotten Son, Jesus Christ.

Every person who claims to be a Christian should consider himself and herself to be part of the Body of Jesus Christ and He is the Head. Together, those people form His Church–regardless of the different names or denomination–by faith, Jesus is preparing His church as His Bride to be in the future of Eternity.

Hence the person who has accepted Jesus Christ ought to consider his and her body as the Temple of God, by faith God is preparing him and her to the perfection and completeness, which will be His final satisfaction between Him and His people–His Church.

But if people cannot respect the Church House as God’s Temple, how much less can they consider their own bodies to be His Temple, much worse for considering that they belong to Him in Spirit and in Truth.

That is the reason religion cannot get out of the minds of mankind when it comes to God, but God wants nothing to do with religion. It was the conformation to religion in His own people–the Israelites–the reason He had to come to this world as a Man, that through His death, His people might live–but by their faith in Him.

When will people who claim to have accepted Jesus Christ as their “Lord and Saviour,” by their faith, consider themselves to be the “Light of the World”; the Light in those persons, who will present themselves to the world (other people) that those who see their works will give the glory to their God in Heaven? Alas! Alas!

        Liza

Your conduct in life was not exemplary. You are no angel or saint. You are the pot calling the kettle black. You write about what you do not know and have no right to interfere in. You foolishly left the Catholic Church instead of learning about the faith, building it up and living a godly Catholic life. People who left the Catholic Church had some problem in their lives. Some of them did not live a godly life. Therefore, God handed them over to Satan which is why they joined other religions. You cannot deceive me with all your jargon. You are an enemy of the Catholic Church. Your words are nothing but hatred for it.
I hope that it will not be long that God will give you and others His just recompense for interfering in the business of the Catholic Church.
God did not establish all those fly by night religions and churches as the one you go to, if you do.
If you were smart you would think that consider the numerous religions in the world. Every day a new one is formed which also takes much of its followers’income; that such people cannot enter Heaven with all this division, disunity, by criticizing the Catholic Church, creating lack of love and peace in the world. Are you too blind and deaf to know that? This is how I know that all those other churches are fake churches. Their leaders are deceiving their followers. Give them hell; speak against them and leave the Catholic Church alone. Do not be out of place and out of your place. This is what you are doing.
Heaven is a place of love, happiness, peace and unity and all those who do not live by it will never enter God’s Kingdom.
It is ungodly to criticize the Catholic Church.
What I think of you, Liza, you are not a smart person. Therefore, hold your fingers to the keyboard and your heart and mind. You are not an expert on Catholicism and therefore have no right to speak about it or to criticize it.
I have said that this is The Church that will remain until the end of time. All other churches will be gone. If the Holy Spirit was not with His Catholic Church, it would have crumbled a long time ago.
Those who keep criticizing the Catholic Church and speaking ill of it and of the priests will live to regret it even while they live. The worst is yet to come when they die.
You are a sinful person and far from perfect. God knows it better than I do. Therefore forever keep the peace and conform to the Most Holy Will of God.
The Catholic Church is superior to any church on earth for Our Lord Jesus Christ established it. This is what gets you people angry/mad, spurred on by Satan who is jealous of what he lost forever. Be careful you do not lose it all for you left the Church that Our Lord Jesus Christ established to form a fly by night church.
I have heard that those who left the Catholic Church are too ashamed to return. Some smart ones, wherever they reside returned.

      • October 11, 2012

        @Justice and Truth

One more time I have rebuked your judgements above against me, in the name of Jesus Christ.

I did not speak to you! Neither will I ever respond to your opinion, unless you have directed it to me, one way or the other; for those opinions or sentiment of yours are filthy and futile; you are grieving Holy Spirit, and that is the most blasphemous sin a person can ever commit, along with all the others which you are buiding up in your heart against me.

Once again I say that those opinion of yours do not belong in print, and in least of time, than you know it, they will return to your mouth to choke you down the throat–as I have written it, so it will be done! Don’t call for a third warning from me.

      • October 11, 2012

And one more thing! You are talking religion, religion, religion, as you speak about God and Church, while at the same time you disagree with someone who suggested the Catholic Church was of organized religion–but that person is correct.

You are dead in the spirit–this mean you are still separated from God Almighty–as you continue to exist with a carnal mind, plagued with confusion, uncertainty, lack of Spiritual wisdom and understanding; that is the reason your sentiments are plagued with futility and filth.

You are one of those, self righteous persons, who is simply wilting away through your “death condition” of your physical body, until you return to the dust that you were formed from, with no hope of leaving that dust condition of yours in the grave, and to know the resurrection of Jesus Christ. You do not even know that God will say to you at the White Throne Judgement Seat “I DO NOT KNOW YOU” for you do not know Him

Neither do I know you, for you and I do not belong in the same world of existence. I am on the side, illuminated by the Light of my God who is of Love–this Light He used to quicken my sould to its awakening, He is Spirit not of flesh and bones. He reveals Himself to me in the Peson of His Son, Jesus Christ, that is the first lesson which He taught me, it is clear to me.

You are with your religious group of darkness and death, claiming to be a “child of Mary”, not a child of God, this son-ship is attained by being “born again” of Water and the Spirit, as Jesus have commanded His chosen people.

Well as I have testified many times before, I am a person of the Spirit, knowing the anointing of Holy Spirit from 14 years ago, this anointing could never have happened to me, if I had continued to follow the teachings, doctrines, or worship style of the Roman Catholic Church.

For God forbids that we worship idols–the abominable sin that you refuse to acknowledge is happening in your Church–even accepting to be a “child of Mary” what in hell’s name is that?

That is enough idolatry already, not to mention all the other “Our Ladies”–such as the “Our Lady of Guadelope” that is mentioned in this news article–that was invented in that Church. It was God who saw me and pulled me out of that Church and it rituals, and you have the guts to label me sinful? Say what!

I do not care about church denominations–because you people think of yourselves as religion, not only the Roman Catholic Church either. How can outsiders not see you people the same way–and so you all do not give them any reason to glorify God’s Love and Holiness in Spirit and Truth.

The God whom I worship personally and with a Church family wants nothing to do with religion, I understood His command and now I have Life in Jesus Christ–and so to hell with your social group and its religious background.

Wait for the time the ugly things, which you keep on writing to me, will return to you to defeat you, the way you would never imagine; because by faith God has always given me the victory, so that I know He always with me.

You better be more careful, the next time you decided to needlessly spew the venom of your mouth at me–because you will always be the victim, not me. I hope you got that!

I agree with you, I am no fan of religion, but shame on the persons who committed this heinous act.

Say what? Arson involved. I hope they find the perpetrator(s). It is almost 2 years since attempted arson on the lives of Gon Emmanuel and wife at their home. No one has been held for the attempted murder of these senior citizens; so I won’t be surprise if no one is held for the attempted arson of the chapel with no precious lives inside.
Where has justice gone? Bring Seiko sekko back to his homeland to face trial; then ppeople will come out and assist the police on arsons of much less significance.
Right under your nose in Pmth Mr Carrot. Once a police, always a police. Hopeless.
