Austrie calls for calm as Hurricane Isaac approaches Dominica

Austrie said NEPO will meet on Tuesday and further instructions will be given

As Hurricane Isaac heads to the island, Deputy Prime Minister, Reginald Austrie has called on Dominicans not to panic and decision relating to the storm may be taken tomorrow when the National Emergency Planning Organization (NEPO) meets and necessary instructions will be issued.

He said on Monday that some of the decisions may include suspension of school and shortening of working hours.

“As we continue to assess the situation a decision may be taken tomorrow when NEPO [National Emergency Planning Organization] meets at 9:00 am and all the necessary instructions will be issues then that may include the suspension of school and the shortening of working hours,” he revealed. This will be communicated to you by the local media from the Disaster Preparedness Office.”

He said Dominicans should not panic and should be making preparation for the arrival of the hurricane.

Austrie said when information is given, everyone should remain indoors.

“I am calling on all residents to remain indoors as much as possible and anyone found uselessly loitering the streets will be dealt with accordingly,” he stated. “Be aware that your personal safety, security, and well-being is paramount.”

Austrie went on to say that due to Hurricane Maria last year the country does not have the full complement of shelters, however available emergency shelters around the country may be opened by Wednesday.

He urged all Dominicans to please respect the emergency shelters “particularly this time when we will be using private homes and some public buildings.”

“The use of these buildings will determine how quickly we can return to normalcy following any storm,” he stated.

Austrie stated further that in areas where there are not sufficient shelters, residents are being asked in the neighbouring communities to please support and assist their neighbor.

“Please stock up on food and water for at least three days and all other items which the National Disaster Office have been advising you to have on hand,” he advised.

He called on business owners to secure all buildings in the City of Roseau and elsewhere around Dominica.

Meantime; Minister for the Environment, Climate Resilience, Disaster Management and Urban Renewal, Joseph Isaac said the various organs of NEPO have been meeting to plan and guide the decision makers in preparation for the arrival of the Hurricane.

He stated Dominicans are being advised to continue to remain vigilant and to monitor the progress of Hurricane Isaac.

“Remember the onus is on all of us to prepare for adverse events,” he said. “I have been advised that the possible hazards associated with this weather maybe winds gusting to Hurricane force resulting in flying debris and falling trees…”

He also advised residents in vulnerable areas and building structures to seek safe shelters.

“Bring along necessities such as water, dry foods and other items to reduce the burden on the system,” he noted.

Isaac went on to say that weather monitoring and reporting is the responsibility of trained professionals only.

“The official and legal body that is responsible for providing up-to-date information on tropical cyclones like Isaac is the meteorological office,” he remarked. “I am therefore calling on those who are involved in the transmission of weather information that is not officially from the Met Office, either on radio or on social media to desist from this practice and allow the authorities who are designated to provide the information to do so.”

At 11:00 am, Hurricane Isaac, was located near latitude 14.7 degrees north and longitude 43.9 degrees west or about 1,150 miles east of the Windward Islands.

Additional strengthening is forecast during the next day or two and Isaac is expected to weaken by the middle of the week on approaching the islands.

On the forecast track, the system is expected to pass over or near to Dominica late Wednesday into Thursday. However, activity associated with the system should begin affecting Dominica by early Wednesday.

Is there a media core in Dominica? A press conference on a matter of our readiness and preparedness for Isaac against the back drop of the devastation of hurricane Maria a year ago that exposed all kinds of issues including shelter, distribution of supplies , health and medical issues, security and welfare issues, and the press in Dominica did not have not one question to asked. I mean better we just shut down this blasted country man! Or is it that they are afraid to ask hard questions. Then they turn around to call themselves journalist. Look the UWP just had a press conference this morning and almost the same thing happened. The head table had to literally beg for questions from the floor. You mean Dominicans are that baokward that not even a press conference can generate questions from so journalist.

We have been assessing this Labour Government Hurricane situation and incompetent Labour Government for over 18 years now. Austrie, you and your corrupt leader and Labour government are not forecasters to tell us be careful, you all are worth than Maria David wrapped up together. Whereas a Hurricane comes and go within two hours, you and your Hurricane corrupt Labour government has been bashing us for over 18 years. We just cannot take more, we had enough. A hurricane comes once a year, your Labour government Hurricane comes everyday and continues to devastate our Nature Island, with lies, Bobol, corruption, deception, incompetence etc. How on earth do we recover from this Labour Hurricane corruption? Well, we need to kick you all’s assests out of office.
This Skerrit lead Hurricane Labour, along with his bind 18 ministers have failed us, know not of development and has crippled our economy big time. There is no production. We cannot wait on the next Hurricane season, you all must…

    September 11, 2018

My fellow Dominicans and supporters of the DLP, please do Dominica a favor by disallowing Hurricane Skerrit from entering our country. Hurricane Skerrit is a very destructive Storm that like a cancer, destroys in secret until it’s too late. See how hurricane Skerrit destroyed our banana industry, our labor force and Ross University, just to name a few. While it is a fact that Maria destroyed us and set us back by many years, I have no doubt that had it not been for the constant destruction of Hurricane Skerrit, we would recover just as we recovered from hurricane David 40 yrs ago. Think of this my fellow citizens, after David Ross was our little baby; they didn’t rund but stayed here to help us build back even stronger. 40 years later they had to RUN away as if in terror, thanks largely to hurricane Skerrit. We no doubt can’t deal with another storm like Isaac or any other. However if we welcome Skerrit back we would be telling the world we are resilient and don’t need their help

I am sitting here monitoring the activity of Hurricane Issac; on two weather channel, the same source from where the Dominica Meteorological information derives. I have not heard or seen any movement if Isaac moving to Dominica. They made mention of the Lessor Antilles and the hurricane moving west.

I did not see a report where it said Isaac is going to hit Dominica; so what calm is he advising Dominicans to be calm?

If it is going hit the country, is his red shirt, and Roosevelt red shirt going to prevent it? How can you suggest calm when one does not know what shall be the outcome if Isaac do hit Dominica.

At this time people will always be anxious!  You all political demagoguery cannot prevent the inevitable if it must be!

Why should one not panic when they have to face yet another storm, with the same failed government that puts their personal benefits ahead of country? They are going through a storm less ready than they were during Maria and the sad thing is most do not have a shelter to run to. The ineptness of this government is once again exposed in this here: “As we continue to assess the situation a decision may be taken tomorrow when NEPO [National Emergency Planning Organization] meets at 9:00 am and all the necessary instructions will be issues then that may include the suspension of school and the shortening of working hours,” he revealed. This will be communicated to you by the local media from the Disaster Preparedness Office.” How could a country be faced with a storm on Wednesday and today Monday, the government can’t decide about school and work until they hear from NEPO tomorrow? Are they serious? Isn’t it better to be over prepared than under prepared? Bunch of jokers and captain out

Where did it say it’s going to Dominica?

    By Leigh Morgan
Hurricane Isaac remained a minimal hurricane on Monday afternoon and continued to track westward on a path that could bring it across the Lesser Antilles by Thursday.

And if that wasn’t enough the National Hurricane Center is also watching a disturbance already in the Caribbean that could become a tropical depression in the Gulf of Mexico later this week.

But first Isaac. As of 4 p.m. CDT Monday, Hurricane Isaac was located about 1,090 miles east of the Winward Islands and was moving west at 14 mph.

Isaac maintained winds of 75 mph, making it a minimal Category 1 hurricane.

While Isaac hasn’t gained any strength today that could change over the next day or two. Forecasters said Monday afternoon that they weren’t sure why Isaac hasn’t intensified yet.

The hurricane center said weakening should begin by the middle of the week as Isaac nears the Lesser Antilles.

    The hurricane center thinks, however,…

I really want someone to tell me that these people are not sick! No condition or situation sways them away from a hate talk about Skerrit and other members of government. I am not Dr. Benjamin but this has to be some sort of mental disorder.

My goodness, what will it take? I do not want to be part of you all’s kind of society and what is worse, there are people who think that this behaviour is alright and are pointing fingers in another direction all the time.

I really think it is time for you people to take the helm of government let me see how you are going to function in this morass of hate that you have created and don’t tell me it is Tony who has created it. From my assessment, although he often talks out of turn, most of the time he is defending some crazy accusation made by the other side and which has been going on on radio for over fifteen years.

Unfortunately, in defending and replying, the other side is becoming just as toxic so where does that leave D/A?

It’s conspicuous, Dominica is very unprepared for any storm. The information and advice from the two Ministers could have been given by a Primary School child of average ability. A meeting by NEPO just a day before the hurricane is predicted to strike the country is asinine! At this time, in the peak of the Hurricane Season, NEPO should be a very oiled machine, ready to go at an instant notice. Every thing should have already been in place, adequate shelters, emergency workers and volunteers, security forces, hospital and medical centers, etcetera. There is no plausible defense for any storm to catch Dominica with its pants down again. With this tardy, unequipped administration, expect mediocrity.

Reggie move there nobody wanna hear you. You can call for calm when all your children safe out of state and you and your madam in all you fancy gated mansion while people still under tarpaulin. You are in no position to call for any calm, shut up already and just enjoy your niceness in peace.

Austrie You all are very bad role models, destroying the country .Most Dominicans will stay calm but it’s not because of your hot air…You are DLP greatest buffoon. Venezuela’s more than US$100 000 000.00 given to us as debt forgiveness is haunting the country ….
I listen to other people other than those from the Met Office …Those who help us 100% during Maria .Oh how I love these guys who make me feel proud as a Dominican .

how ironic eh look a storm coming straight for Dominica and the name just happens to be Issac. it could have been named Helene but a depression which was formed after this one, developed faster and took the name Helene.Dominicans can be so annoying with their love for one man Skerrit, when they should be loving and praising God. I hope it passes straight cause if it doesnt God help us. All this time for us to be preparing for times like this, we there playing politics and trying change law to register people overseas.SMFH……
