Flooding at Douglas Charles Airport

flooding at douglas charles

The Douglas Charles Airport, located in Melville Hall, is presently being flooded.

The Melville Hall River has breached its banks and is flooding sections of the roadway in front the facility.

DNO understands it has been raining heavily in the mountains.

The airport was severely damaged by flooding during the passage of Tropical Storm Erika in August last year.

If I was working at discover Dominica I would use this frequent airport flooding events to promote Dominica as the only place where you can kayak right out of a plane into immigration, take a ride on the little carousel and then swim into the parking lot or passenger pick up area.
Discover Dominica can also offer sea world adventure at 1000 feet from the airport where visitors can do wave running just like bull running in Spain – at the sea wall location visitors can wait in anticipation of the breaking wave and make a run for it.
I doh even want to talk about playing hopscotch on the sidewalks in Roseau.

Why is the Prime Minister living overseas? Has anyone noticed this? Its like he comes to Dominica on vacation sign a few papers then gone back home. Worst we have to pay him daily stipend to keep him out there? The Prime Minister needs to make a decision now, either he is Prime Minister of Dominica or an international hotel consultant? If he dislikes the country and prefers to stay in hotels just say so and stop doing it at the expense of our tax dollars. Pay your own way Skerrit cuz you not bringing back nothing to show for it.

Pierre Charles and Rosie vex wid all that nonsense, so they retaliating. They so disgusted at what labour party has been reduced to.

Roosevelt doesn’t do anything to develop country only to win an election. That’s why he did not care when they told him do not extend the air strip onto the river bed at crusher. See the results. Where is the night landing now? Is river landing it have.

This flooding is bad. Mother Nature has sent another flooding which cannot be helped. As long as there is a lot of rain in the forest the rivers will overflow their banks,
Offer suggestions respectfully and send them straight to the proper authorities.
Give the PM a chance to consider what to do next about this flooding which may very well recur in the future.
Remember, you are not the PM. He is.

It seems DNO have more engineers than the Government.

  10. March 15, 2016

The picture says it all. I am sure that the present Government understands that the river needs to be dug deeper and a higher wall needs to be built. Progress comes through failures and experience. So hold on to your horses people. This is a good thing that has happened as nature teaches us our mistakes. know that God loves you.

  15. Expect more and more flooding
    March 15, 2016

Dominicans, you haven’t seen anything yet. Most of the rivers, streams have been heavily silted after Erika’s passage. They have not been completely dreaded. So expect with any heavy rainfall flooding is inevitable.

Faced with the crises of bad governance, increased crime and violence, child abuse, corruption, environmental disasters, illegal acts of all kinds, injustices, victimization, the regime finds it an opportune time to focus on election to come. Skerritt runs up to hand over $80,000.00 to the Giraudel/Eggleston Village Council. The council has not presented any project/programme proposals, no budget for project. Transparency, accountability absent.

In all of our tragedies, the Bajan pollster drops in, in his attempt to make the people forget their sorrows, with foolishness about Skerritt winning election again. Nothing said about increase in child abuse, or economic decline, nor social and cultural regression, nor the corruption taking place.

This is the first warning. The Skeritt administration has been warned, I hope Skeritt spends more time in Dominica and see to it the Ministers of Government do their work. There can be no excuses this time. The man travelled all over the world telling Dominicans that he is going to find monetary assistance and after two weeks of travel, all he can show for it is to be dressed as though it is carnival Tuesday in Dominica. The man should put his travels aside and make sure everything is in place for the hurricane season. For instance, make sure all the rivers that were rammed with silt after the passage of Erika should be dredged. Skeritt should appoint a powerful team headed by one Minister of Government and approximately six illustrious Dominicans whose only responsibilities are to make sure all factors connected to the hurricane season are perfectly placed. All permanent secretaries and heads of department should be answerable to them.

Am so depressed about everything in this country. we going from bad to worse. No interest being shown by this government over the country’s situation. The hurtful thing is they KNOW they are screwing the country, doing nothing, promises of last election was a fraud; lies lies lies continues, each and everyone of them interested in their self and pocketing as much as they could, Problem problem problem, never ending problem and no solution. A man just travelling travelling travelling and selling passport like peas, no money coming in and Dominicans just don’t care. The captain never there, all I can see he in the air

      March 15, 2016

The Captain left on Friday!! Hes up in the air, we don’t know where!! It is truly sad it is nearly 8 months since Erika and basically nothing has been done to really fix any roads here at all. In another 2 months we are in the hurricane season again. Something seriously has to be done and it has to be done now and properly. How will folks get to work if the Dublanc road slides. That is just one road and there are so many more! What happens if any of these roads break when motorists are using them. We truly cannot understand the Government at the moment. The Government were give aid to help fix the roads. If we have another Erika nobody will help us as they have not seen anything done with the money they have given already. Poor Dominica and us Dominicans,

At least Ma Charles used to go out with her begging bowl and come back with grants, funding etc…Edison James used to go out and come back with something.

Millions of dollars was spent on upgrading the airport, probably there were somethings that could have been done differently. So how do you come to this ridiculous conclusion that Skeritt wants to harm the people of Marigot and Wesley? A multi million dollar upgrade to the airport, to hurt the neighboring villagers because they don’t support you? Well following this logic more villages should be anti government so that they can get multi million dollar projects in their area.

That’s what happens when you have a government in power but refuse to continue the work of the opposition party that was in power. Stadium the mash it up. They build their own. It had a approved site for a safe major airport the present government refuse to use, just because is was the opposition idea.

Another warning to Dominicans. Flooding of Melville Hall in March. Days after Skerrit starts his by-election campaign in Giraudel where he gave them a cheque of $80K to spend as they wish.
A country in tatters, the rivers are silted, debris along river banks waiting for the next storm and Skerrit gives away $80K without an invoice, without a project. Take this because I have a young boy here who I want to win the next election. AND Dominicans smile and say stupes in silence.

It does not take rocket science to figure out that proper dredging of the river is necessary. The next hurricane season is around the corner. What preventive maintenance steps are we taking to safeguard the facility? Can someone tell me what is being done at the Office of Disaster Management and the Ministry of Public Works. It seems as though preparation and prevention is not a priority at this stage. Are we asleep? Then again we live in a failed state.

Skerrit can continue to lie; he can jump high, jump low; he can deny; he can do all he wants but the curse he has put Dominica under will continue to follow him until all can see. He can build today but I can assure him that before he is finished building, what he was building will be destroyed. He will try to make a name for himself; but his name will be blotted out. This evil leader MUST GO! Those how you supporting him and his lies will realize that as long as this man his head of state, Dominica will sure fail. Like Pharoah in Red Sea when everything he had was attacked by God, up to the wheels of his Chariot, so too everything Skerrit touches will fail

St. Paul said, “Who could know the mind of God?”
You are blaming others but not yourself. This is displeasing to God. It is as if you are more perfect than others. It is a sin/crime to exonerate yourself as if you do not err.
There is no sinless person on earth, some, more so than others. The power of the mouth, fingers to the keyboard and words are dangerous and destructive. It could incur the wrath of God. If you are not enlightened to know that. Take note.

I cannot understand that one in his position would have done something like that. Now D/cans are suffering without an international airport. If there was one, many more D/cans would visit their country. Dominica would get many more tourists and even more investors who would set up business there.
Look at Antigua. It also has a new state-of-the-art airport. They are making a lot of money. This is another reason I am unable to comprehend why LIAT decreased its flights to Dominica. Do they want all the business?

Bit by bit but inexorably we are becoming more insular. Connections with the outside world severely restricted and communities inland cut off because of failing infrastructure.
How are we to attract foreign investment, and jobs, if we do not take care of our infrastructure first? Never mind new investments, we must attend to preventative maintenance first and that is sadly lacking at the moment. The sale of passports is not the answer for the majority of our citizens. It neither creates value-added employment nor puts food on the table.

    • Voice of Reason
      March 15, 2016

I’ve never understood the plan to encourage foreign investment and in the process, create good jobs, when the emphasis is on poorly planned hotels and the like; when the country’s infrastructure is unreliable at best – haphazard roadways, unreliable power source, poor healthcare system, and no well thought-out plan to incentivize nor support the private sector. Anytime the government is the largest employer in a country, the economy is destined to fail and fail miserably.

Punisher, what should the Dominican citizens be grateful for under this regime? Goion, tell us!
The truth is that Roosevelt Skerrit had the chance to build a new international airport at Crompton Point, in a less vulnerable location, rather than spend over $100 million upgrade for Melville Hall that has proved all but useless. But he wouldn’t do that, would he because that location was selected by the previous government. Now I don’t care two hoots about that previous government but that location is far better than Melville Hall. Same thing happened with our stadium.
