BREAKING NEWS: Tear gas fired in Roseau

Riot police moving in

Police have fired tear gas in Roseau to disperse protesters.

Earlier opposition parties held a meeting to demand the resignation of Prime Minister Roosevelt Skerrit.

The meeting ended earlier on Tuesday, but some protesters lingered on.

The riot squad has moved in and tear gas fired.

Reporters on the scene said rocks and bottles are being thrown.

DNO understands the disturbances are on Kennedy Avenue and Independence Street.

DNO is following this development.

I am very surprised at the behaviour in our citizens. We can not destroy our beautiful country. our voices can be heard without violence.violence is never acceptable despite the problem. When houses are burnt ome one suffers not the prime minister.let us behave in a responsible manner. Do not let problems overcome us.

There is a democratic way of removing a government. It’s called a General Election also known as voting or placing the X. If Dominicans attempt to remove the rightful government by force or violent civil disruption, it will not do the country any good. Let democracy work. Demonstrate peaceably, have honest dialogue with your parliamentary representatives and try to get them to understand the will of the people. Maybe some of them will listen to the people and use the constitution to create change from within Parliament itself. But whatever you do remember to always choose proper upright honest good citizens to represent your interest in Parliament.

we are in a democratic country. i have no problem with the opposition leading a peaceful protest or calling for the resignation of the ‘prime minister or the government, but to allow your protest to go violent without just cause is not acceptable and cannot be justified. the opposition now has the responsibility to explain went went wrong and why did the “peaceful” protest end up a violent protest…

Their is a rumor circulating around the city that the Skeritt Administration intends to arrest, Linton, Fontaine and Joshua for not following the agreement relative to the termination of the meeting in Roseau yesterday. According to the agreement between the police and the leaders of the demonstration, the meeting should cease at three p.m. Because instructions were not followed, subsequently, their was a clash between the demonstrators and the police thus causing a riot. I hope the Government will have an immediate investigation, because if any stupid action is taken, it might lead to further disturbances on the island.

Canada is this what you want to see for your country. If Skerrit must go there is a way to do it. This cannot be good for your country but i guess you are far away in Canada and who feels it knows it. You should be ashamed to come on here with this post. Do you have any idea the millions of dollars in business Dominica is loosing right now? Are there cruise ships scheduled to be docked, are they able to? Is this interferring with all of the Call Center Workers from getting to work? Do you have any idea what the backlash of that could be? Are there tourists cancelling their vacation right now after watching this? Do you have any ideas how many jobs this can affect? This is no time to rejoice, all Domincans should be ashamed and be afraid. Is this the way Lennox Linton wants to take over and lead his country? Does he now know and understand the ramifications of what he has instigated?

Well well well, is this the Dominica that Linton wants??? Shame on UWP!! The world we’re looking at this tiny but beautiful Caribbean Island ? as a peaceful paradise but now many will be apprehensive about coming to this riot stricken Island. What has this riot achieved??? I strongly believe that Linton is working with outside interests to destroy Dominica and cause an invasion by the United States just as it happened in Grenada. Dominicans will regret the day that they followed Linton and shamed Dominica with violence on our streets!!! This is NOT the way to make your voice heard!! Linton has a seat in Parliament!!! That’s his voice. He should try to get more seats in Parliament so that he can drive policy through. Not by destroying Dominica!!! Linton is NOT fit for Public Office!!! Shame on him!!!

Suddenly DBS is now a Gospel Station for saints…… Tonight they all turn pastors and priest,as if God is a labourite…. Pastor Cecil.

    Aren’t we a democracy anymore?
See how many protests were held in the U S since Trump became President?
Not for once was any teargas used.
Dominica is on its way to a serious quailing and Skerrit and all those who refuse to tell him when he is wrong will get their fair share.

The oppositions need to call for outside help.
it is ridiculous that people cannot protest.
we are not in Russia nor China.
Also let the US government know about those that coming down to vote.
Let President Trump know so when they come down they will not be able to go back so all of us will enjoy the misery together.

The insurance companies need to take note of these illegal actions through political conspiracy taking place, and bring forward a class action lawsuit aginst the UWP and their machination of chaos to bring Dominica\’s economy to depression, I say detain them until Easter and then proceed o prosecution and execution of justice on the purpetrators

When Blackmore spoke on DBS, he failed to mention that the police refuse to allow the truck to exit the area instead instructing the driver to reverse through the crowd to exit. While the protest was peaceful and police displayed extreme professionalism, the decision to prevent the truck from leaving, created an atmosphere for disobedience by a minuscule number of people.

So what did this prove? The PM is not going to resign. The Opposition Leader is not going to be the New PM. The UWP will not form the government.

We see how coward the Leadership of the UWP is. They ran to their home or on a radio station, happy for what is going on. Shame.

What will the people get. Because I do not up to now know what the Riot was about? Voters rights? Dominicans cannot vote? No that is not it because we have the most democratically fair elections. The only thing is that the UWP is mad at the people for saying no to them.

Will employees get higher wages? Was that what the riot protest was for?

Were they protesting for Scholarship for your children? Of course not?

Were they setting a good example? That he is better than PM? No way!

Were they getting you better health care? No!

What will they do for Dominica any way? They have told us nothing that they can do to make the lives of Dominicans better? Have they? Of course not!!

When all of you on here talking bad about Mr. Lennox Linton and the United Workers Party will one day open you all eyes it will be too late.

My heart bleeds for Dominica and the extremely high level of ignorance being displayed in this beautiful island. I cannot for the life of me understand why people will not just listen for a change. Do your research, ask questions instead of shooting down everything that is said or brought up in a discussion about Dominica. One Hundred french Men cannot be wrong!!!

I for one is not into Partisan Politics. Right is right and wrong is wrong be it Labour or UWP. These alleged issues with this administration is serious and to be taken seriously. Investigate everybody, bring out the truth, have a civil discussion on issues and let good sense prevail.

We are too small an island for all this nonsense. We behaving too immature in this situation and we are destroying ourselves by being blindly devoted to political parties.

Disgusted at the Leadership of the UWP for after agreeing with the police to have a peaceful meeting from 11:00 AM to 3:00PM have allowed their members to destroy the City and and to attack our Police Officers and cause harm to people of the country.

Praise go to the Government and our Police Officers for their restraints. I condemn the Leaders of this protest for now the rioting happening in the City of Roseau.

No sensible Dominica will ever believe that is not exactly want the UWP planned to happen. Hope they are proud of themselves for encouraging the crowd to misbehave.

At 20:22 the riot is on. DNO I would have thought you would have told your readership when the Meeting was supposed to start and end.

  50. The Truth Be Told (Original)
    February 7, 2017

I thought the protest ended at 3:00 pm. They were still out on the street in the evening? They did not want to go home? After their so-called protest, the Police should have dispersed them. They should not have been allowed to linger-on for, who knows what they could do.
Rocks and bottles thrown? They are out for trouble? Do these people have any sense and consideration for others as also the nationals who reside in the vicinity? They could injure them.
They are hooligans and cantankerous who defy authority as the Police authority. They had a plan and knew why they remained until that time.
Police, I hope you did not spare the tear gas. The troublemakers should also be arrested.
God help Dominica, bless it and protect all law-abiding nationals from all harm, those who genuinely want what is good/best for Dominica. Lord, You know who they are.
Likewise the President, the Prime Minister, members of his Cabinet and their family.
    God bless them all!
