Bureau of Gender Affairs hosts workshop on advancing social and gender justice advocacy

Careen Prevost is PS in Ministry of Social Services, Family and Gender Affairs

A three-day Strategic Gender Planning workshop geared at advancing advocacy efforts towards social and gender justice got underway at the University of the West Indies (UWI) Open Campus on Elmshall Road on Wednesday.

The workshop is organized by the Bureau of Gender Affairs in collaboration with the Ministry of Social Services, Family and Gender Affairs and will end today, January 20, 2017.

Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Social Services, Family and Gender Affairs, Careen Prevost who was addressing the opening ceremony on Wednesday said the workshop will also develop a system for effective and efficient monitoring, managing and implementing development plans.

“This week’s Strategic Gender Planning Workshop will provide unique opportunities to build the capacity of our frontline staff and volunteers in Strategic Gender Planning and will cover several key areas of inequality that needs to be considered when we are planning our projects and programmes,” she said. “We also hope that this exposure can influence a deeper involvement and commitment to the agenda of advancing gender equality and empowering women and girls, which as we should know is highlighted as a critical sustainable development goal, particularly goal.”

She said at the end of the workshop, organizers will be able to introduce participants to the relevance of a gender sensitive and responsive approach in resettlement and humanitarian programming, “and to deeper your engagement of gender responsive and gender based violence programming.”

“We also hope that at the end of this workshop we would have been able to strengthen the knowledge and skills of key personnel responsible for managing and overseeing the transition programme of the displaced communities, and to prepare them for responding to future disasters,” Prevost added.

She noted that organizers hopes that they will be able to strengthen the capacity of of social services providers, who continue and can make a greater contribution to the promotion of gender equality and sustainable development through partnership at all levels.

Prevost stated further that this workshop is also expected to encourage participants to think critically about our men and boys who can be used as agents to target groups in realizing gender equality and gender justice for all.

“Finally we hope that we can at the end of this workshop advance our advocacy efforts towards social and gender justice and develop a system for effective and efficient monitoring, planning, managing and implementing of our development programmes,” she noted.

The training will be facilitated by staff of the UWI, Institute of Gender and Development Studies: Dame Nita Barrow Unit, Cavehill Campus.

What next? Everybody not the same in the eyes of God, we not all created in his image? Next thing they want affirmative actions for lesbians. Why spend so much public money on empasizing our differences when God does not see any? Just treat everyone with respect and let the law deal with any transgressors, regardless of gender.

I have my qualms about this “gender” issue. Why not say men, women, young girls and boys?
If you are referring to job equality that is OK. Any other “gender” needs clarification.
I do not see why the word “gender” should be used in Dominica.
Are you aware what this really means in the US, Canada, and no doubt Europe and what it will lead to? Same gender washrooms and for transvestites. Has D/ca reached that stage yet or is it becoming that?
Organizations overseas bring their practice of ideologies and you people adopt it. They also promise to fund it.
Think of Planned Parenthood and how they deceived others into thinking they were an innocent non-profit organization. They have caused millions of babies in their mother’s wombs to be aborted. They even sold aborted baby parts. That organization was up to no good morals.
I heard today, President Trump signed a document to de-fund International Planned Parenthood.
Wait and see for your gender issue.

    • GENDER=transgender, gay, lesbian, man, woman.

Well spotted. That is because the ‘gender’ use is a trap to enable these satanists to bring in gays, lesbians and transgendered people into our scope of what is ‘normal’. Don’t be taken in and RESIST this junk.

In Europe, kids in schools are FORCED to learn about how it is OK for men to become women and vice versa. They are being TAUGHT that anal sex between men is NORMAL and that homosexuality is a GIFT.

We, as a Christian nation, know and appreciate that the bible is equivocal that homosexuality is NOT ok, so RESIST this indoctrination.

If people want to to homosexual, that is their choice, but in no way should anyone try to tell us that this behaviour is NORMAL, because is certainly isn’t.

    Well, well, well!

Don’t buy into this folks. It’s all about getting us to accept gays and transgender people as normal and for our kids to be taught that its OK for two men to have anal sex over and over again and to live together happily ever after; to use women’s toilets and to adopt kids they can then indoctrinate into their debauched practices.

    Not OK.

The bureau is doing a good job to advance the causes of women in Dominica. But I think you all have to be strong enough and come out to condemn all forms of sexual abuse regardless of who the perpetrators are. Politicians or not.

    hmph… more crap.

Let me ask: When talking “Gender Equality”, does that includes a man’s rights?

Answer: Nope. Women now hold more rights than men.

How is this Gender Affairs in favour of “Equality”?

Eg. Woman hits man, man holds back. Woman hits again, man auto-reaction hits back. Man goes to jail and is given wrong with no proper investigation.

Change “Gender Affairs” to “Feminist Affairs” or “Women-only rights Association”.

You all do nothing to build males and then expect them to perform magic with efficiency on the road sides.

Not that i prefer any gender over the other… we are all equal. Please remember this or fall like all lost empires.
