ROSEAU, Dominica, CMC – The Dominica government Friday announced that it had nominated business woman Jennifer Aird to be its first ever non-resident ambassador to Brazil as the island seeks to develop closer relations with the South American country.
Aird is the chief executive officer of DotDM Corporation, which has an exclusive agreement with the Dominica government to administer the dot-dm internet domain registry as well as to market the .dm suffix world-wide.
Junior Foreign Affairs Minister Alvin Bernard said that Aird is expected to present her credentials to the Brazilian authorities soon.
“Miss Aird comes to the table with varied experience in international affairs…and she has keen interest in specific areas of sustainable development, agriculture, agro industry, alternative energy many of the things that Brazil has some advantages in,” he said.
Bernard said that appointment highlights the Roosevelt Skerrit administration’s desire to strengthen relations with Brazil.
“We are advancing a long standing relationship we have had with Brazil since 1986 when we established diplomatic relations, but we have never had respective representations of either country,” he added.
Earlier this week, the Guyana-based Office of Trade Negotiation (OTN) at the Caribbean Community (CARICOM) Secretariat urged regional countries to develop “a clear approach” in order to establish a stronger trading alliance with Brazil.
It said that Brazil remains a lucrative, but under exploited market for the region’s exporters.
It said that while CARICOM has been developing stronger trade linkages with Latin America including
establishing trade ties with Venezuela, Colombia, Cuba, Costa Rica and the Dominican Republic, “there is still the need for a clear approach to establishing a stronger trade alliance with the largest Latin American market Brazil, which could assist in facilitating regional economic development”.
According to the OTN, which was formerly the CARICOM Regional negotiating Machinery (CRNM), the Caribbean incurred a significant merchandise trade deficit with Brazil in 2009.
It said that CARICOM’s merchandise exports to Brazil increased by over 31 per cent annually between 2001 and 2009, while imports from Brazil expanded by 32 per cent annually over the same period.

ADMIN: We have arranged an interview with the person regarding what you asked about.
@100%: When we in Dominica speak of ICT, what are we really saying. I think people use this word loosely and have no idea what it really is. Is ICT a product, a market exportable service, how can DA benefit from this..Please explain
Congrats Jenny. A local hero always fighting for Dominica whether we know it or not…but some of us do. We know you’ll be seeking opportunities for ICT Development and collaboration between us. Time we get a Dell factory to supply Latin America or some ICT support centre.
