The University of the West Indies (UWI) Open Campus Dominica, the Fort Young Hotel and the Charles Foundation will host the Ninth Annual Dame Eugenia Charles Memorial Lecture on Thursday, November 27, 2014 at 7:30 p.m. at the Fort Young Hotel Conference Room.
This year’s presenter, Professor Brian Meeks, will speak on the topic: “Beyond the End of Sovereignty: Recapturing Space for Humanity in the Caribbean.” Meeks is Professor of Social & Political Change and the Director, Sir Arthur Lewis Institute of Social and Economic Studies (SALISES) at UWI Mona.
During the presentation, Professor Meeks will scrutinize the difficulties that Caribbean states find themselves in because of issues such as hostile competition for market access, the demands of austerity measures enforced by the international financial institutions and of course the 2007/2008 World Economic Crisis, out of which the Caribbean region, among the hardest hit, has been also among the slowest to recover. The presentation will seek answers to a fundamental question: Are these economic problems to be fixed with economic structural reform, or are there profound inconsistencies in the Caribbean’s political systems and the ways these have evolved in the last 50 years that have stunted growth?
Like all the other Lecture Series of the UWI Open Campus, this event is free and open to the public.
This Series is mounted in the memory of Dominica’s first female Prime Minister. The Dame Eugenia Charles Memorial Lecture Series focuses on socio-political issues.
Guests get the opportunity to listen to the speaker present for about 40 minutes. Following the presentation, they will be able to interact and to generate meaningful discussions about the influence of the topic on the Caribbean region.
Long live the Dame. God help Dominica!!!!!
Now here is a woman who gave hundreds of Dominicans scholarships and never boasted or told the world about it. She will forever remain the best leadership Dominica had to offer. Three chairs to the Dame. Long live your memory. You are legendary.
*cheers* not chairs…lord jeezus..
Sounds interesting. I look forward to attending this one. (I missed the E.O Leblanc Lecture last month, and I was told that I really missed a ‘treat’!)
