CARICOM Chairman on withdrawal of US from Paris Climate Accord

David Granger

The Paris Agreement on Climate Change was more than just another international agreement on another complex international issue. It reflects the acknowledgment and acceptance that climate change is a global issue requiring global solutions.

The Caribbean Community (CARICOM) is therefore deeply dismayed and disappointed by the decision of the United States to withdraw from the Agreement.

For us Climate Change is an existential threat. As members of a Community of Small-Island and Low-Lying Coastal Developing States (SIDS), the reality of climate change is making itself manifest to us, especially given that our Region is the most prone to natural disasters globally.

The need for global action to combat this phenomenon is past urgent. As one of the prime contributors to the emissions which continue to push global temperature rise to an untenable level, the leadership of the United States in efforts to curb the warming of the planet is an important factor.

Abdication of that responsibility sends a negative signal particularly to those of us most vulnerable to the effects of climate change despite the fact that we do little or nothing to contribute to its causes.

However, CARICOM is encouraged by the fact that the overwhelming majority of Nations remains firmly committed to the Paris Agreement. Our own commitment will never waiver. Our existence is at stake.

There is always two sides to a story, in these times when information is all over, people should do their own research and not listen these misguided Fellows, especially when the mainstream media is one sided and is sponsored by the same Fellows that’s rubbing the small Poor people blindly,,,

It is in fact, a disappointing situation. Hopefully we can move forward from this stronger. America is not the whole world, we need to remember that.

Trump’s actions reminds me of a child or even an adult who doesn’t like others to benefit or gain something. Everything cannot be about America.

This is not just a signed paper for good looks, it is something that binds us. We have a duty to protect the earth and ourselves.
This is a global mission, we need to come together to find solutions. It starts by making day to day choices (what we eat, how we travel, how we conserve).

Well said Granger. Now more than ever, we need global integration on issues that affect every nook and cranny of this earth.

I am in full support of PM Skerrit and President Granger. A lot more of the world leaders should have a voice on this matter. Take a page from our leaders’ books!

Well said. All those who bash Skerrit for going against the US in condemning its withdrawal and calling for a unification of countries globally need to put their two pence to this message from the Caricom chairman. They are both right! Everyone is so afraid of the US and oh visa visa visa. Visa what!! What has the Caribbean gained from the US other than systematic mental and economic enslavement?! Look now it chose to pull out of this Paris agreement with no regard for the SIDS and the other countries being affected. I applaud the American businessmen who are standing with the rest of the world and defying Trump and his foolishness.
