Coast Guard’s decommissioned boat to be removed shortly

The Dominica Coast Guard is working to remove the vessel washed ashore in the vicinity of the Canefield cliff recently by rough seas caused by the passage of Hurricane Earl, Deputy Commissioner Cyril Carrette has said.

Speaking with Dominica News Online on Wednesday, Carrette said the Coast Guard would have to outsource the removal works to private individuals, and this would be done at the earliest possible time.

The beached vessel was decommissioned about three years ago and is to be disassembled. This process is awaiting the necessary clearance, Carrette said.

“The boat is a shell. It is empty,” Carrette added.

The decommissioned vessel, along with two other boats – one of which was a Venezuelan pirogue – were washed ashore.

Aluminum boat tied to a steel jetty for 21 years would very likely need to be decommissioned.
Aluminum and steel immersed in sea water act like battery poles with a constant current flow.
Unfortunately aluminum being the softer metal is sacrificed. Literally thinned/ dissolved.

Did Cyril Carrette and the government just realize there was a ship on the shore after three years? That’s utter nonsense!!! Another question. There was a ship on the Glanvilla beach since 2004 or 2005, has that been removed yet? How long does it take to contact a company to remove a big ship from the shore that has been sitting for more than 3 years?
What type of necessary clearance does the government need to disassemeble a ship after more than 3 years? Please be advised that all the Dominicans are gullible. Stop making excuses and have these vessels removed. It looks hideous on the beach.

Regardless, it was unnecessary to have the boat beached! There is a cost to removing it, borne by taxpayers..by the way the cost is not just what the contractor removing it will cost but the unproductive time spent viewing, and assessing the situation, planning and administering the intervention. Not only cost guard officials were involved: even the audit department came in!!! The other question is if it was decommissioned 3 years ago, why was it sitting there that long? Any way you dice it, some people were not doing their work and it did cost the state, in direct and indirect costs…it certainly does not cast the coast guard in a professional responsible light and it did in fact cause a safety concern (the empty boat was a projectile).

AS usual the wise people who jump to conclution and said all sorts of things about the police i hope you all are eating your own words now that the other side of the story has been told. The boat has been out of service for 3years. Do some of our people who are quick to lambast the police think they are the first ones to do that? No! that sort of behaviour has been going on for a very long time the only reason we read or listen to it is due to technogly where mostly the negative items fly off some people`s mouth like wild fire and that`s not only related to the police. My friends those of you who thinks you all are the first to wage war and be negative one way or the other i am here to tell you all it`s nothing new, i am not defending the police but like it or not the police is here to stay so long live the police force and down with the negative stuff. Now bring it on who the cap fit can wear it and sound off.
