Comment rating is back!

Dominica News Online (DNO) is pleased to announce that the comment rating feature is now functional.

The feature was disabled after we were flooded with complaints that readers who tried to use it were being directed to other sites.

After the feature was disabled DNO conducted an online poll asking the question “Do you think the thumbs up/down feature contributes positively to the comments on DNO?”

1,075 readers particpated with 871 (81 percent) voting yes, while 240 (19 percent) voted no.

We hope the measures taken have effectively resolved the problem and the feature will remain an integral part of DNO.

We also appreciate the patience and feedback received.

    DNO,
if you observe carefully you will realise that in the absence of the thumbs button there was also a decline in comments generally.

Since its return there have been a surge in comments. some people use it as a barometer to find out whats hot and whats not. It also gives partisan readers a nonverbal outlet to their rage or praise of a particular commenter.

In the preamble to this article you mention ‘it was disabled’. This is a bit ambiguous, since on the one hand it could imply that it was a calculated move.

ADMIN: Just refresh your page. And also you can ‘like or dislike’ a comment only once.

Admin: Thanks for the observation. We’re actually working on an arrangement right now to do that.

The majority has spoken but are they truly correct? We do not know who this majority is.
As everything else I got accustomed to them and did not miss them one bit. It was as if they were never there. I have more important things to do and to think of than to worry that they were not there. It all depends on the lifestyle and type of mentality.
My estimation of this is the comments are more important than thumbs up and down. At least DNO, including its advertisers and the authors of the articles can read the comments and visualize the thoughts that go through their mind. Are the comments not more important?
How do thumbs up and down benefit the ‘authors’ and ‘advertisers? Thumbs up and down do not state much and nothing about those who click them and how precise are they. They do not give us the status and education of those who do, if they really comprehend (fully) the comments and if they read them in the first place. When they respond, it tells much about them. Just as people are judged by what comes out of their mouths, so are they judged by what they state.
As Our Lord Jesus Christ said, “It comes from the heart.” Therefore, what is imbedded in our thoughts and mind come from our heart and through our fingers on the keyboard.
To a certain extent, one could tell what type of person the writer is. In reality, this could somewhat determine their background, status, education.
Those who write nonsense, their comments teach and yield nothing. Those who write intelligently, their comments may be taken into consideration by the authors of the article including the advertisers and those in authority where applicable.
Those who also take pride in giving people especially thumbs down, what they may not have read or comprehend, should take note. Be fair, be kind, read carefully and respond accordingly in likewise manner. Consider, you could learn something from their comments. Never pass up a good opportunity. This is life. How often opportunity knocks? How often are we given second or more chances? :) God’s love and peace!
