Corbette suspended

Insp. Lincoln Corbette

Police Inspector Lincoln Corbette who was arrested  last week and charged for “wounding with intent” has been suspended from the police force by the Police Service Commission (PSC).

Corbette was charged following a shooting incident involving Nicholas Roberts in July, 2011.

He appeared in court on Thursday, August 7 and was granted bail in the sum of $30,000 with one surety.

Concerns were raised the day after his court appearance when Corbette was spotted by members of the public and police officers in full uniform.

However, hours later, he was summoned and handed his letter of suspension.

He will remain suspended from duty and will be on half-pay until the matter is properly disposed off in court.

We Dominicans are simply amazing. Everything negative we embrace. This act against Corbette is clearly a politicized move. Someone is trying real hard to impress the government and solidify themself in a position of authority. Let’s be honest here. Who among us regardless of what position you hold hearing your child in peril would not react similarly or maybe even resort to more drastic measures? I know I would and trust me rapist or pedofile would probably have been yesterday’s news. Since the incident have those who seek to bring Corbette before the courts simultaneously addressed the safety issue at all schools-campus police? I guess not. If the rapist or pedofile is so sick what the hell is he doing out in the community and more so in close proximity to our children. Where the hell is the registered sex offenders list? We are too reactive rather than proactive. Everything is indeed upside down, back to front. If this man was in the U.S.he would have been dead and entire police force of blue brothers would rally behind their own. Corbette God got you. Those who hide behind the screens in an attempt to bring disgrace upon you will be exposed in due time. If it rains on your neighbor’s house be mindful that someday it could pour down on yours. Those who have eyes to see are given a front row seat to this. Keep on believing in the most high when man condems God exonerates. When we as a nation can ride on the side of truth only then will the perils that entrap us be relieved until then we have many hard lessons to learn. Corbett stay on your knees and continue to believe.

I went to school with Mr. Corbette- he graduated from the St. Andrews High School. Always a brilliant man, and had a keen interest in policing- was the only man I know to memorize every vehicle number in the community – guess being that his father was also a corporal. During recruitment, I think he also graduated #1. So he is indeed brilliant man with a keen interest for law enforcement – the very same thing that come back to bite him now. However, I hope this man is given a fair trial, with the possibility of reinstatement back to his job, considering the circumstances.

The way things are unfolding in DA it begs to question when will truth and justice prevail? When will persons be held accountable for those acts of misconduct and nonchalant behaviors?
It’s high time we as a people act in a mature manner and stop living in ignorance and biasness.
Politics and political affiliations cloud everything in this country, there is no love, trust, tolerance or give and take.
We are a wicked people, slavery and slavish mentally has left a devastating mark on our capabilities to be deliberately acute. All we like is throwing maypwe, mal parle, instigate and cover-up.
Who are we? We do not know, so we identify with all and sundry. We talk about a malfunctioning Judiciary, yet we do nothing about it, we see blatant favoritism and utter disrespect and yet we do nothing about it, the few that as much question what’s happening, we the sideline spectators maypwe-zay them.
On here we come posting comments left, right and center, forgetting there is something called “due process ” our Judiciary malfunctions because we the populace malfunctions, we have a “Dolly House ” government because we are a Dolly house populace. There is no respect anywhere because the population has no respect.
Persons had already said they will not testify in this case because of the on going backlash, so yet again truth will never surface and the court system comes to a standstill and it goes on and on, but I’ll say this “Night runs till Day catch up with it ”
If the people of this great nation, who preferred to run to the mountains and maroon themselves than work on the estates, this country that stand like a man (tall ) This. Country that is ridiculed and mocked, the one that is always written about as the least, this country who have produced stalwarts and freedom fighters that believe injustice anywhere is injustice everywhere, this country that stand alone like a thumb if her people don’t bring about change, the mountains and blood of her ancestors will cry out.
I am not stupid, I am not affiliated. I care about DA and DA alone. I know we are better than what we portray.

whether or not mr corbette used excessive force , i do not know, however if i had met a known rapist around my daughters bathroom and he had no callings there, as a parent your first instinct is to protect your children,we think of the consequences after, this is normal parent behavior. i pray that all will be well

I am sooo amazed by the hypocrisy of some of the comments…you are using teh fact that you dislike policemen to cloud your judgement!…Tell me which parent would drop their lil daughter to school, hear her scream and see a partly naked man running away and not react????!!! I am a parent and am not saying what he did was right but when u are a parent and u have the slightest suspicion that ur child is in danger you REACT and ask questions later!…that guy even lucky he was shot in the leg….most fathers would have gone for the head!!so i cannot sit there as a parent and blame the man for his reaction cause maybe i would react similarly!

Some of the comments are biased at best and only portray the writer as one who is of very low thinking. In commenting on a news item, one must set aside personal convictions, feelings and emotions and speak to the facts as they may so exist. This is what I have done from the inception of this particular issue.
The fact that one is a pedophile and was caught in the act of making sexual advances at an underage child, is indeed a vexing issue. Only heaven knows what my reaction to such an act would have been, if I were a parent witnessing such boldness being displayed by the despicable son of a gun. If I had a gun, I might have even winded up killing damn low life. But would my actions at the time have been the right thing to do?
As a senior officer, Mr. Corbette would have been familiar with certain guidelines, laws and regulations pertaining to the use of firearms in general. He should have been aware of the consequences of the use thereof. The wrongful use at that.
The fact that one is armed and is allowed under the Firearms Act to protect life and property and is given the right to use force to protect themselves or others, to prevent crime and to effect a lawful arrest, should not be translated to mean that a mere provocation permits one to make use of his firearm. Police officers only use force to the extent that is necessary, proportionate and reasonable in all the circumstances. In other words, the force used must be necessary, reasonable and consistent with the force used by the person against whom such force is being used .
The facts presented are that at the time when he was shut by the inspector in question, the man was running away running away. It means therefore that neither the officer nor his daughter was at the time in any immediate danger and need for defending one’s self or are another, would not have existed at the time.
In fact, by the pedophile’s actions, it can be concluded simply that he was in fear for his life, thus the fact that he was running away.
Mr. Corbette allowed himself to be consumed by his anger and in the process shut a defenseless man.
The fact that one is a police officer, does not mean that he is above the law. There is no room for gangsters or unprofessional behavior in this humble profession.
Where an offence has been committed, the police a required to investigate and the true finding forwarded to the DPP for a decision. This process was thoroughly followed by then Superintendent Carbon and ASP Irish both of whom rightfully recommended that the officer be charged as his actions at the time were unlawful.
Being cognizant of the fact that in our jurisdiction where one is deemed innocent until proven otherwise, it is now a matter for the court to decide upon.

Every parent should support Corbet, You mean to say you send your child to school and a rapist choses to go and hide in the toilet, what did he go for? Is it chicken or gold? When Jesus Christ was brought before Pilate, he said I find no fault in this man. The people said, ‘give us Barabas and crusify Jesus and Pilate, if its is that you want, take him and do whatever you want with him. I wash my hands. When Jesus was resurected they were baffled and the said, is for you all sins I kill him. So tell me if you all want a rapist or a criminal instead of the lawman. If it is good you all will see it. Ask you all self a question. Case dismiss :?:

Not likely considering that the DPP himself allegedly suggested that the man be charged. Cases get dropped when the police charge first and seek legal advice as to whether they should charge later. It seems that it wasn’t back to fron this time.

You have to prove that you or the one you’re protecting was in danger of being killed, before you could pull the trigger, depending on the circumstances. Just because you are a police officer does not give you the right to use your weapon when you feel like it. You need to uphold the very laws that you’re sworn to protect.

I must say that I am in total agreement with the course of action that was taken against the ‘Inspector’. I say this because, you and I know that if it was one of the Constables, junior or senior, he or she would have probably been dismissed already. The authorities that be would have tried to make an example out of the Constable. So, what is good for the goose is good for the ganda.

He was just a vagrant passing by who did not want to urinate or excrete in the public like the others, and chose to use the closest available wash room. And, off course the washroom was available because there were no security in place at that time. I guess everything happens for a reason, one being that it was time the school realized the need for a security officer and two being, that Corbette must think carefully before using deadly force. The Question is, what if Nicholas had died from that shot. Is it because he did not die that there should not be an investigations as to whether the proper course of action were taken? He’s a human and not an animal, regardless of his status in society.

This man was arrested, charged and suspended from the force for defending his daughter from a man making sexual advances at her? Is that fundamentally true? How can a man defending his daughter from being sexually violated be guilty of such a crime? What was he supposed to do to become a national hero? This is absurd. In June 2012 a Texas man killed his daughter alleged rapist and was not charged….. he beat the man to death. THAT MAN WAS PROTECTING HIS DAUGHTER from a pervert. In a situation like this which parent would practice any self control regardless of the office he holds? Am I missing something here? Somebody tell me please. Wasn’t the molester violating the right of a CHILD? The Convention protects children’s rights by setting standards in health care; education; and legal, civil and social services (UNICEF) which may include security. If I am missing the wider picture here somebody please educate me but for now this is absolute nonsense TO PUNISH A MAN FOR PROTECTING HIS DAUGHTER.

      August 14, 2012

I’m sorry did the man actually touch his daughter? You can’t shoot someone who looks at your child with lust, otherwise Dominica would be total mayhem. Men in Dominica look at young high school girls all the time. Not just look but tell them how hot they are… I have seen it hundreds of times waiting at the PT Michel bus stop when school lets out. You cannot just go and shoot someone. If they Rape your child well then whole different set of rules! Especially now when there are so many people in the country carrying guns.

      • August 14, 2012

To you touch is not the only form of sexual advance, in some countries people cannot stand on the road side to pee, even the zipper of a man’s pants or if he have his hands on his private part coming towards a woman she can call the authority and have he charge for indecent exposure, so to you LOST there a many types of sexual advance
