In an attempt to create awareness of its work locally, Crime Stoppers Dominica (CSD) has launched its “Choose a Medium and Speak Up” contest for schools.
The contest will be targeting all primary and secondary schools to express various themes relating to tackling crime through art, poetry, jingle, short story and essay, member of the CSD, Michele Henderson Delsol, said on Tuesday.
“We are on an awareness campaign right now to get people to know what Crime Stoppers is, how is it that we can use Crime Stoppers and how beneficial Crime Stoppers can be for our society,” she explained.
She added that CSD considers young people as ” a very vital group in crime solving,.”
“Crime affects them considerably,” Henderson-Delsol noted. “We considered the fact that we should target the young people in our society and get them involved with Crime Stoppers. To do that, the idea was brought up to do a competition between the schools and Crime Stoppers Dominica Schools contest was born.”
So far over 60 schools have been contacted to participate.
J. Astaphan and Company and LIME Dominica have sponsored over $20,000 worth of Ipads and other tablets for winners.
Competitions in poetry, jingle and art are open to both primary and secondary schools.
For poetry, participants are to write on the topic, “Ways in which youth can help prevent crime.”
Those who prefer art are expected to interpret the theme, “Effects on crime on my community and how we can help keep it safe.”
Those who opt to d a jingle are to produce a one-minute jingle on any of the above themes.
Secondary school students from Forms 1-3, are expected to write a 500-word essay on how Crime Stoppers can contribute to a safer society.
Those in Forms 4-5 are to write a 500-word essay on “The Effects of Crime on my Community and How we Can Help Keep it Safe.”
Story writing will be for primary school students from Grades 5-6. They are to write a 150-word short story about an incident where one or more individuals used Crime Stoppers tip line to help/solve a crime in their neighborhood.
Entries for the contest will be judged on February 13.
I am very happy for the initiative. i do think that the BOUNTY is too small and that people are constantly abhorring criminals because of the lac of privacy, professionalism and trust.
I have relayed information to the police that left the perpetrator perfecting his act because the very same police was the one repeating the information relayed to the perp.
Secondly, how are we going to deal with the police who go around conning, and stealing and committing all sorts of crimes and are being protected information alteration procedures.
Police officers are to serve and protect and no leave person hurt and resentful. CSD needs to focus on these fugs who use their powers for personal gains and hide under the unshaven armpits of the law.
Some officers are even afraid to deal with some seasoned criminals because they themselves are guilty by association and have infact committed crimes with the very same felons that they pursue.,,
