Dangerous hole in Ti Bay; motorists beware

holeMotorists traveling in  Ti Bay near Portsmouth are asked to approach the area with extreme caution as a large hole has opened up on the side of the road.

A concerned citizen, who contacted DNO, said the road itself is showing signs of sinking and is warning that there could be another “Pont Casse” incident in the area if the matter is not resolved urgently.

Recently, a huge section of the road collapsed in Pont Casse due to heavy rains, taking the lives of two of Dominica’s national footballers.

The concerned citizen said yellow tape has been placed around the hole, which is close to Secret Bay Hotel, but cautions people approaching the area to be on the look out.

All four roads leading to the roundabout are unsafe. After the big sinkhole in Pond Casse, the government said they were going to inspect all the roads in DA, but I just see all the cracks that look like the roads will be falling in soon still. This is scary!

Neglect of proper signage and barriers has been a problem in Dominica for years. I remember a Latigue girl losing her life on Grand Savannah back in the 1970s when a bridge was washed away by heavy rains. They put up s sign that was held up by two small boulders. The wind blew it down and the unspuspecting driver drove into a precipice.

That was almost 40 years ago and now we are hearing about the same type of casual attitude toward driver safety. When will we learn?

I could remember that accident, my big Brother took me to see it :-D

These sink holes occur all over the world. You think it is only in Dominica? Dominica recently got a lot of rain. Consider the recent storm. This may have accounted for this hole. Did anyone of you give this a thought?

Your sins, sarcasm and rude words caused this. The more evil people are and with their minds and mouths, the more disasters will strike. You are not doing justice to your country.

its a funny thing though, ppl on the east is like pick ur poison on the road you choose. if you pass warner road there is also a broken part of the road wen you leave the junction of where you would enter the village and continue u up the main road. if you not familiar with the road especially at nights its also a disaster on dat warner road.layou park road also is not all dat so therefore some serious road safety have to bhe taken into consideration cuz its like a disaster waiting to happen again

I believe that if a wider view of the road showing the hole was given, persons would better understand the location and the area.

poof, leave mr blackmore out of this. this area rains most of the time and if there is not enough or proper drainage sink holes will eventually appear, does secret bay have enough or proper drainage, beware the project dosent fall into a sink hole like the father’s house.

This is so dangerous, we need to send messages to our ministers to let them know that they should be constantly checking the roads here in Dominica. We are so vulnerable with the extreme weathers. Roads need maintenance and updating on a regular basis. We want everyone to stay safe on the road and not worry about where the next sink hole is going to be. DNO please advise readers who we should be reporting these findings to. This would be useful information to know.

true, look at the road at Antrim its moving again in places it has never moved before and we have not did not even have the rain we had in April. They need to close that road it is moving to fast this time

    July 17, 2013

Unfortunately we lack appropriate diversions for this roadway. It is probably the most heavily traveled highway on our island but if the road is closed there is no practical alternative way to pass. We drive this road twice a day every day as do thousands of others. I hope they can get this stabilized before we return home tonight from Picard to Salisbury, because we have to travel it tonight and once again tomorrow morning.

this time the earth is moving real fast and we have not had the rain we had in April. It is shifting in places it have never had before in such a sort space of time. They need to “officially” closed that road. In places the Layou road is also a death trap. The road is so bad I wonder how those large vehicles drive on it.

  16. July 17, 2013

Some people are already on the roads and may not have access to DNO to inform them of the sink hole. I hope they are listening to the radio for information. This hole that I just saw, if one is not aware or is not familiar to area could be a fatal surprise. Yellow take is really not enough.

WARNING SIGNS SHOULD BE POSTED AT LEAST A MILE AWAY TO INFORM MOTORISTS TRAVELING ON EITHER DIRECTION. BE SAFE, DRIVE CAREFULLY.

    • July 17, 2013

CORRECTION – Yellow ‘tape’ is really not enough.

    • July 17, 2013

place danger road signs both before and after in both directions.

    July 17, 2013

Really? this does not help much. ti bay is a large zone. you could be a little more specific and give proper directions ……….. between secret bay Resort and Rejens Hotel would be a good enough one for ppl who are not too familiar with the area….pfft

    • Anonymous
      July 17, 2013

If they had said between Secret Bay Resort and Rejens Hotel, you would ask what part between Secret Bay Resort and Rejens Hotel. All you never satisfied,

Ti Bay is not a big area, like between Roseau and Portsmouth with miles and miles of open road.

The message is, anyone going into the Ti Bay area should be on the look out.

You muss b a real ****. Everybody knows both places i mentioned even though they dont even know the area is called ti bay. at least in this area they will be on the look out not d entire length n breadth of ti-bay. And if u say ti-bay is small you mussa really fail maths in skool.

Well smarty pants, since you know the area so well, why didn’t you go and take some pics and send to DNO and give a good description. At least the concerned citizen did the right thing and people are now aware of what is going on.

the road in the Antrim area (gong up to springfield) above the Dowasco the radio there is also sinking. there are areas in the road where u can see the holes are forming. somebody put up some yellow caution tape and sticks in the hole but that is not enough. we do not want another pond casse inciden to take place. the authorities need to do something. and do it fast…passing on that road now is passig at your own risk. motorist take every precaution….safe driving to all

    • My take
      July 17, 2013

This is so true. I drove on that said road over the weekend and there are obvious sections where you can see the sink on the road. Signs need to be posted ASAP before we have another disaster.

      • la plaine
        July 17, 2013

well this morning u should see it with all the rain….i sure hope something is done soon…i would not want to see or hear of another incident like that took my brother’s life. our government need to do some serious investment in some study on our roads too many sections of our roads are showing signs that it is sinking

      July 18, 2013

THat might be worse than the pond casse incident, the whole side of the mountain is looking to come down at any time. This is also expected as the road in the entire region was actually built on the side of the mountain except from Sylvina to Rosalie road which in a little way inside the precipiece
