Tropical storm Danny, the fourth tropical storm of the Atlantic hurricane season which formed on Tuesday afternoon could become a hurricane by Thursday, weather officials say.

During a live report on state-owned radio DBS, Acting Senior Meteorological Officer at the Dominica Meteorological Service, Marshall Alexander said the weather position model is showing that the system is expected to pass just north of Dominica most likely as, “a tropical storm or a category one hurricane on Monday.”

“Some strengthening is expected in the next 48 hours and Danny could become hurricane by tomorrow,” Alexander stated.

According to him any likely impact would be less hazardous if the centre of the system passes north of the island, “this is no reason to let our guards down because this system can have significant impact.”

Alexander advised residents to be vigilant and continue to monitor the focus of the system and to be prepared to take necessary actions, “to save lives and property if or when a watch or warning is issued.”

At 5:00 am on Wednesday, the centre of tropical storm Danny was located over the Central Tropical Atlantic near latitude 11.3 degrees north and longitude 40.2 west, about 1,445 miles east of the Lesser Antilles.

Maximum sustained winds have increased to near 50 mph with higher gusts. This system is forecasted to become a hurricane by Thursday as it moves westward near 14 mph.

Slight to moderate sea conditions are expected during the next 12 to 24 hours with waves peaking near 7.0 feet.
