DASPA calls for telephone numbers on relief barrels

Bardouille spoke at a press conference on Wednesday

CEO of the Dominica Air and Seaport Authority (DASPA) Benoit Bardouille has urged those who send relief barrels or packages to relatives in Dominica to include a telephone number on these packages.

Speaking at a press conference on Wednesday, there has been an increase in containers at the Woodbridge Bay Port and storage is a problem

“Clearly as it can be seen on the port, the number of containers, when compared to previous years, has increased drastically over the last three months by some 60 percent,” he said. “The sheer volume of increased cargo arriving in consolidated containers or lesser container loads have increased considerably because of the relief items being sent to families, friends, and individuals as a result of Hurricane Maria.”

He said the port is constrained by space and he called on consignees, or those receiving packages, to visit their agent representatives for agent release forms to be able to clear the cargo from the port.

Bardouille stated that there is a problem in reaching people who have to collect cargo at the port.

“There is a difficulty in reaching some persons because we have telephone numbers, the agents have telephone numbers for some persons but those telephone numbers are not reachable, we ourselves try to call some of those persons but obviously because the telecommunication system as it is at present, fix lines are not functional and some of these cell phones do not operate in certain locations,” he remarked.

According to Bardouille, people sending barrels to Dominica should include a telephone number.

“And so we are urging persons who are sending barrel boxes and the like to their families, to put a telephone number that they can be reached or contacted because sometimes they are not even aware that those packages are there or have arrived and so it remains in the port for a longer period than it should,” he said. “That creates some kind of backlog for us because we have to be shifting some of these items to be able to de-stuff more containers so that more persons can receive their cargo.”

While I will give Bardouille a passing grade for a good job the port has to do a better job in the future showing responsibility what I am talking about before the storm if you ship a vehicle to D/CA. your keys was most likely to get lost the port never have a key system where they tag the keys with a number make & colour of the vehicle in march 2017 my vehicle was on the port and they could not find the keys lucky
that I had a spear now if they had a vault with keys and a tag system now all the vehicles on the port have no keys they use to keep the keys in a card board box so now the storm must have put that some where in the sea most cars now a days if you cut or order a key you have to program it or order it by the VIN.
(vehicle id. number) so I wish that they can set up a better system.

To each his own, take your time you will get there, he took his time, is no fault of his he got there younger than you. Take your time, he has started the foundation for you and you still can’t do the job, just take your time, stop that rat race, crib in a barrel, tie your waist because your journey will not be easy. Let the man do his work. Retirement is for all of us. Stop taking port time to let staff lock themselves in your office to post thing on social media. He is my boss he works hard I will defend him. Niceness cannot run the port.

Bardouille, there is a thing name retirement you know.

When a person get to a certain age, they should get out of the way so that a younger person can have the opportunity to get a job also. If a man commenced working young, by the time he gets to the age of 65 years old, they should retire get out of the way. In America, at age 65, we go home and live on our pension, or social security benefits.

The Wesley kid retired at 47 years old, invested, and living off my investments, in addition to a social security check I receive  each and every month, for the rest of my life!

Go home Bardouille it time for you to go and get some rest! You are way over 55 years old go home leave it to a younger man or woman!

@Francisco Telemaque ….stop trying to mislead people in Dominica with your lies. Hardly anybody retires in the U.S at 72 , much less at 65. (Well, those who are retired at 65 never had a job in the first place, maybe they were on welfare all their lives and upon turning 65 government gives them some stipend to help support them.
At 47 and receiving social security checks already? Maybe you got injured on the job and can’t work anymore. Tell the people that

        You need to shut up!

The retirement age in America is 65 years. Legally one can retire at age 62, the only difference in retiring at age 62, and 65 is that the person does not receive full benefits until they get to 65 years old!

Some of you rubbish people like to runoff you mouth and don’t know what the hell you talking about. Norma life span is seventy (70) years, one can die days after they turn seventy. Shut up, I been living in America for forty years of my life, legally and know what I am talking about. Prove me wrong by quoting any law in any state, or Federal Government law which makes it mandatory to retire at age 70, you dumb idiot!

I retire at age 47: can you say the same?

“At 47 and receiving social security checks already? Maybe you got injured on the job and can’t work anymore. Tell the people that”

And let me inform you, when I retired at age 47, I retired from a profession as an electronic engineer who worked in the defense industry, I made enough to go into business for myself. I am wealthy, and I did not steal one dime. I made make more money in one night while I am asleep than you will ever make in your entire life!

What is you profession? I invest in Real Estate after I retire, my social security check is also earned, everybody in America who gets a social security check paid into the system, therefore it is mandatory the get a check when they get to age 65, that is not welfare that you all run to America to live on!

There is also SSI (Social Security Insurance), tow different things, know what you talking about before try to insult me, because you are scum of the earth!

What I would suggest is the barrels and relief items which are on the port with the names and addresses but no number, even if there are numbers and its not reachable. Can the port offer the services to take these items to the villages stated on the barrels, box, tubs etc to be distributed to these peoples. One way or the other to help someone.

I guess you have never been to Dominica or the port. the man and his staff is doing a great job. Imagine your bus holds 20 passengers and you have 75 people in the bus stop and you must transport all of them. I have no idea how this man sleeps at night because this is not an easy task. a lot of us would have resigned already.
The port is not designed to hold over a 1000 containers.

    • December 14, 2017

Now that’s where the Village Councils should come in and take those barrels/Box to there office and contact the names of the people just ask them to bring some ID just for security proposes ,Mr. Bardouille try that you might be surprise.

And to those in the diaspora try and send messages to your folks in the DA to go and follow up at the Port with some form of ID as proft that would make thing a lot better.

So what is the purpose of putting the numbers on the barrels/containers then? The solution is to allow the people to clear the barrels when they come for it.

Mr Bardouille you have done good, and there is NO way I will support negative about you this time around, power hungry staff members are the ones echoing that sentiment and are getting stevedore to support them with the hope of false promises, I know because I was approached. You are to STRIKE is the word. You should have allowed them to loot the port. God don’t like ugly.

the attack on this man is a plot from the top, man continue to do the good work, you have changed that port, from my father days to now you have done great work, because of you my sister can now work on the port, in my days women did not want to work there, your reward is not on earth it is in heaven.

    December 14, 2017

It is a shame to see how a few haters would do and say anything to attack an individual for their personal gain. What has that man said that is soo wrong? Give them dishes to wash in a sink and they can’t do it, if I did not know better I would swear this man was the one who directed hurricane Marie to Dominica. Roseau was locked down for 5 weeks all the ports were damaged and yet the ports still started operations the day after, give the dam man so credit, ungrateful ppl, a number of schools are still close, domlec has given provided goodwill with power, do was one is one day on one day off, yet were are satisfied, yet they continued to attack a man that is trying. I wonder why? That is why I will not come back to this island because the ppl are just ungrateful, when you have a staff member telling my Neice to call her pel rep because she could not find her box but when my dad went the next day the box was there, tell me if that is not mischief? Wicked ppl, more than Marie will…

Something is definitely wrong here…..either Bardouille is confused and repeating himself or the reporter made a big error in his or her report. On one hand you have a number and it is difficult to reach the person in question due to fallen line which make ps it impossible for the person to collect their package.
You then go on to encourage the persons sending the packages to put a number on the package. How will that help, if lines are down or signal is low?
I wonder how some people passed reading comprehension and writing skills. Maybe it me who misunderstood the above article .

Every barrel have a name. keep a log: arrival date, from? ship/vessel?port from? and keep same at the port. So when people come they can claim their barrels. Some companies still not shipping to da due to that problem. Give some people a job to do that at a designated location.

Mr Badouille, please clear the air on the many allegations of people losing there goods sent them by family and friends under the ports in Dominica. Lots of folks are very concerned about this stealing n so called misplacing of goods. If such a thing is true, how will people trust Dominicans and so forth. It is very upsetting to hear all those stories, which are causing poor people tremendous distress.
If those who are paid to help make life easy are causing such pressure please deal with the them. This is an urgent appeal to those concerned to look into the matter most seriously. If such allegations are true, Dominica’s reputation will be much more tainted.
Maria should bring people closer to God and each other n not the opposite.
Mr Badouille said put number, but if folks are losing their goods what sense does the number make. Number to pick up empty barrels… Nuff said.. Somethings will never change.

DASPA is really in a critical state with this “BAAD WHEEEL” at the helm! This guy’s statement nonsensical is self-contradictory, he stated that the agents do have phone numbers, but they are nonfunctional! He seems to be of the opinion that the storm brought in new and better working phone numbers! These guys are a poor example of management. Dominica is a small island, where everyone knows who live in their local area, an out reach could be made on local radio, or local community organisations to inform these people that they have a barrel they need to claim within a specified period. This Wheel is not only bad, it is rectangular and poowee!

    Man stop that cr*p!

Most of us living in America have unlisted numbers, because we don’t want to get calls from undesirables, and you suggesting people put their telephone number on a bl**dy barrel of so that everybody who handles that barrel become knowledgeable of one private number! Some of us do not even want people to know what we are sending home to help our relatives.

Are you crazy man; what’s wrong with you all labor party clowns?

Mr BAD -WILL there is a disease call foot and mouth disease, the classic symptoms but most prevalent are when you speak without thinking, as a boy going to school in D.A. I was thought that there are four things that come not back, they are the spoken words, a sped arrow, the past life , and a neglected opportunity , mr BAD -WILL what do you want your legacy to be? it’s not to late I will pray for your redemption.

Honestly I haven’t gotten your point nor did I see the connection.

When I was growing up granny also say to us. When you go out there if you have nothing to say it’s always better to say nothing than to have people thinking you are very foolish by what you say. Because it’s what you say that will use against you.

I am offering you free legal advice

It may help u in the future if you don’t have a brain like Lennox

  18. December 13, 2017

Shame on you mr BAD-WILL you did it again , you yourself said because of lack of telecommunicantion via phone in Dominica cus of Maria that’s the reason the barrels are stock pilling , so what else you want them to do? , you have to go mr BAD-WILL with the rest of the incompetent ,find new locations to store the barrels I know for sure there are room in the port that are not being use where you can store those goods, MR BAD- WILL. do your job.

Hmmm, so you did not anticipate that as part of your logistical planing? The issue of phones not working has been around since September 19th so the port should have designated an area/ locatio/ facility to move cargo when the recipient cannot be reach in a timely manner. Sad sad sad Mr. Bad-will.

So now, is it true that Tropical Shipping is unable to deliver building materials to my country because of your inability to manage the port properly? You need to be fired forthwith sir

This is a valid and logical request by Bardouille. The port is running out of space so if we can help by putting numbers that actually can be reached then we should do so.
