Terrible behavior was the reason why Denny Shillingford was placed in shackles at the Princess Margaret Hospital, according to the police.
“Throughout his admission on the ward Shillingford has been behaving terribly, very outrageous and erratic,” Police PRO Assistant Superintendent Claude Weeks told DNO on Thursday. “By that I mean insulting and threatening the medical authorities, particularly the nurses.”
He said the police had no choice but to intervene to restrain Shillingford.
“Because of his consistent and persistent unruly behavior the police definitely had to intervene and give support and assistance, so that the administration of the ward could go on without difficulties,” he said.
In a SAT News video Shillingford was seen shackled to the hospital bed where he has been admitted with gunshot wounds.
He said he was lying in bed when unidentified police officers “in military clothes” came in and told him he was under arrest, and when questioned why he was being arrested was told “this is not for you to know.”
He also accused the officers of using indecent language.
But Weekes said the police had received numerous complaints about Shillingford and one senior nurse is “very much in fear and traumatized,” by an incident in which Shillingford reportedly threatened and insulted her.
That matter is being investigated by the police, Weekes said.
That is not all for, according to Weekes, Shillingford has been smoking cigarretes and cannabis on the ward and was told by nurses to desist from doing so.
The PRO said when the police and nurses went to have a chat with Shillingford, he threw stale urine on them, “including a corporal dressed in full uniform.”
“What must the police do?” he asked. ” The police indeed had to contain him, and of course charges have to be instituted and he had to be legitimately restrained in the circumstances.”
Weekes said there is now round the clock police security at the ward.
Shillingford, who has confessed to fire bombing the house of local attorney GON Emanuel, was shot in St. Joseph recently and has been hospitalized, according to police reports.
In 2013, Shillingford was charged with arson in connection with the fire bombing of Emanuel’s home which took place on Christmas morning in 2010.
Shillingford had confessed that he set the fire, claiming that he did so under the orders of Earl ‘Seko’ Grant. Grant was eventually charged with conspiracy to commit arson.
Shillingford was serving time in prison on a charge of causing grievous bodily harm and was released earlier this year.
After reading the 2nd article of this individual I have to conclude that this guy has some serious issues. He has Glo Bush, demon possessed, psychotic and a drug addict. Somebody did mista something. The best thing I can suggest is refer this guy to Dr. Benji where he can get that injection to cool him down. Get also the Catholic priests or pastors to seriously pray over mista.I can see a road to destruction before this young man. I am no Saint but the devil got this one. I think troubled patients like this, their problems should be dealt with speedily so that they can be discharged as quickly as possible, when are they going to fix his leg? what’s the hold up? Not that he should be given special favor but to put an end to the uncomfortable environment on the ward.

This man is rude, coarse , abusive, insulting, cursing and terrifying nurses and even other patients on the ward. He breached all the policies of the ward…. he is always screened because he is afraid of been killed yet he can still terrify the staff, promising to do them harm…he used all king of indecent languages he knows…. he went on to tell nurses that even if he can’t do much because he is confirmed to bed now, he can have his people do them…..
In any hospital we go, we will never hear loud music to disturb the ward and other patients, loud talking and this kind of behavior….. he has this habit no matter the time and the condition of the other patients and what anybody will tell him…

I first want to ask our media to be professional. Let us not to sell our country at that cheap . On Thursday morning at about 9 am, when i read the first post of DNO on this issue, somewhere, it said that DNO received the picture and the video watermarked Media Entertainment link and on the picture and the video, you could see the watermark ” Media entertainment link”.

This story is highly suspicious. I do not trust the police and some of the medical staff. Very frightening. I have known of many out of control patients but never has any one been placed in police custody because of misconduct. I would like to know the truth. God help us.

Otherwise just have nurse give him an injection where he never wake up and we will see how bad he is. To be quite honest if I am guarding him in the hospital and he throw urine on me I would just put a lead between his eyes then I would ask him if he saw who did it.

If he is behaving badly, why not put him in a private room, there he can have a nurse someone that he trust especially for himself. Why the handcuffs? Is this the only way one can restrain a patient? I lived and worked in Jamaica and the only folks I saw handcuffed to beds were criminals. Is the throwing of urine (pee pee) at nurses a criminal offence ? What has happened to this human beings autonomy and rights, though it is unethical to use your freedom to inhibit another’s freedom, I do not believe what Denny has done to the nurses and ward sister requires that he be handcuffed to the bed. Surely there are health and safety implications – suppose there is a fire on the ward?
I also note in the piece that it was said that when Denny questioned the reason for his arrest, he was told that that was not for him to know!!!
I see the behaviour of Denny as being contrived, it may be an attempt to give him a record as a ‘mad man’ or it may well be that he is trying to call attention to himself or he genuinely has psychological issues, either way should he be on the regular wards or should Dr Benjamin be called in to take care of one of his own? I am sure Dr Benjamin will agree that restraint in a hospital bed with handcuffs is not only unsafe, but may be inappropriate in this instance and there are more cultured ways to restrain patients in hospital in 2014.

Mr. Weeks, I have always believed in your professionalism but this time I question your report though I understand you were not present and you can only report information passed on to you. First of all if the man is misbehaving at the hospital why not put him out of the hospital? Secondly, why would he threaten the medical staff and nurses when he knows he needs them? Could it be that he felt threatened by them? Or could it be that he did not feel safe with them especially in taking medication and food from them? I sure would not blame him though. Thirdly, who is that senior nurse that feels threatened by him? Could she not be an agent of some good legal minds here. After all Mr. Weeks, some of the senior nurses work for some of our best legal minds in Dominica and are very red. Is from the PMH to their 2nd job which is at the house of some good legal minds. With what Denny confessed, the names that he called etc would you not be afraid to be under medical care of those who are friends of certain big boys that expressed their judgement on national radio after the Christmas morning saga of 2010? DNO, what are the circumstances surrounding the shooting of Denny Shillingford? At least you disclosed he was shot in St. Joseph recently. What info do you have about this matter. What does the incident of fire the home of GON Emmanuel has to do with this shooting incident. Help your readers to understand. The repeated statements apparently in an attempt to linking this story (shooting of Denny) to the Christmas Day fire at the home of GON Emmanuel does not assist in understanding why he was shot? Where was he shot? Are there any suspects? Was he shot in public or was he at burglarizing someone’s home? If we believe ASP Weekes then we can see the arguments for handcuffing him even whilst on a hospital bed. We need certain such info re the shooting. Is it asking too much?

The shooting incident has nothing to do with the fire, but that incident is the only thing that makes Denny known to the public. If that is so why didn’t the police say so in the first place and ask the hospital to issue a statement to make clear that mr. Shillingford’s movements were restricted with their approval.
