DFP condemns violence in Roseau

Several businesses were vandalized during the disturbances

The Dominica Freedom Party has condemned the acts of violence which took place in Roseau on Tuesday night following a meeting held by opposition parties in Dominica to demand the resignation of Prime Minister Roosevelt Skerrit.

In a statement, the party said its leadership will meet on Wednesday morning “to show the world that the Dominican people are united in their desire to immediately restore order.”

“Let us put aside our differences and focus like a laser beam to assure the of safety our tourists, medical students, businesses and every single citizen of this Commonwealth,” the statement said. ”

Furthermore, we the leaders and the media must demonstrate a high level of responsibility by soberly and strictly guarding against any words or actions which may further inflame this very serious situation.”

The statement assured the international community that Dominica has the maturity to handle such disturbances responsibly.

“Finally, we call on everyone to implore God’s wisdom and guidance as we immediately restore peace and tranquility to our beloved Dominica,” the statement said.

During the disturbances shots were fired, businesses vandalized, roads were blocked and fires set in several parts of the capital.

The police said several arrests have been made.

I have been calling on the leaders of the Dominica Freedom Party and the United Workers Party to come together for the longest while to join forces against the Skerrit band of the Labour Party to try and bring stability in Dominica even before all those scandals came out, so much so that DNO mentioned that I keep repeating my self but I would switch words around to make those points.
I am happy that the parties have seen what is going on, and that common sense is prevailing for the better of the country, the main aim now should be to get this government out of. Office, place an interim Council to organize new elections within 180 days after they put Skerrit and his cabinet out. Elections should not be called with the Labour involved. This is the SECOND TIME that the Labour Party have deceived the PEOPLE only this time it is worse…… SKERRIT AND HIS CABINET MUST GO. NO MORE CHANCES FOR DOMINICA LABOUR PARTY…

  2. If according to Roosevelt Skerrit the DFP plotted with the UWP to overthrow him, and then members within the DFP, and the UWP went to the police and report the plot, I find it strange that the DFP is condemning the violence!

If this is the case, there is a tangled web, a hypocritical web of deceit lurking somewhere, faking as truthful, and a notorious liar somewhere in between. I know Skerrit is the liar, but I wonder if the comments of the DFP are sincere, or simply hypocritical!

Very well said. Freedomites hate what Skerrit is doing. They know the facts will vindicate them in the end. What’s wrong with that? They condemn the violence. They suspect some of that has Skerrit fingerprints all over it – just like Gon Emmanuel & SilverLake. What’s wrong with that?

So doh worry about those critics who live off Skerrit crumbs. It will not be long before the facts catch up with them!

As a proud Dominican living overseas i am saddened to read/hear of the events that have been widely reported. I would urge you all, from whichever political party to show respect to each other. Let the will of the people be your guide. Dominicans and friends of Dominica will surely think twice before stepping onto our shores if the disturbances and violence continue. The eyes of the world are watching Dominica, please do not let your differences become a millstone which could ultimately sink the hopes and aspirations of you, your children and your childrens children.

DFP, who is taking responsibility for this statement? Is it the general secretary, political leader, PRO? Who are the people in this DFP. Are you all afraid to identify with yourselves?

The so called DFP cosily shared the violent propagating platform of the UWP. They have been comfortable for some time and shared the same bed. This combined agenda and thrust is simple to oust a fine leader and Prime Minister, no matter the cost to the people of Dominica. The hypocrisy of denouncing these violent acts is damning and shameful! Let be known thag Skerrit it stay for as long as the majority of Dominicans want. We the majority understand what is at stake and express this at the polls again. Go ahead DFP and denounce but your hand is all over along your partner the UWP! May God bless all of you!

Is little boys that running and try to play good. Dr. Sam was arrested, as a result all you called on Dominicans to join you all in Roseau for protest, they joined you and had a massive and successful protest, when it was time for protesters to leave, police through instructions from their head decided to provoke and incite violence and when the people reacted all you running and ask people to pray, without condemning the actions of the police and blame their leadership for what took place? Man you guys are like chickens.

Why would law enforcement allow the vehicle that was used as the audio platform to enter a road that was barricaded/cordoned off in the vicinity of the financial center? You have to apply critical thinking here: no right-minded commander would allow it knowing fully well what your intentions were.
Why did you guys incite a mob mentality during carnival time? This was an unpopular uprising. You guys are seeking to disrupt government with patently false claims. You claim that it is only passport sales the gov’t depends on for revenue, but by your actions last night it clearly shows that your intention was to disrupt another major revenue stream – tourism. Today three ships should be in port with a total capacity of over five thousand passengers. What do you have to say to those taxi drivers, vendors, guides, and those who are out of jobs? So which is it? This was an act of disobedience and I blame the entire opposition parties, it’s leaders and their surrogates colluding alt facts.

You are living up to your name roadside garbage cuz that’s what your post represent. That recycled garbage you just spewed there making sense? Even if the police had allowed you to pass where you wanted you would look for something else to blame them for. You uwp folks don’t understand that even if you come and talk a whole heap of rubbish to defend people are not dumb. Stop wasting your breath the country knows who did what.

DFP please do not be a hypocrite. Before the incident happened you should have come out as a leader. But you didn’t you joined the UWP, you are just as bad as the UWP in what you want for Dominica. Too late for conscience clearing.

I have to say that my confidence is now restored by this very responsible & proactive statement by the Leader of the Freedom Party. This is the type of approach that I expect from a Party Leader. Not a call which inevitably resulted in violence on our streets. Well done Frederick Baron, Leader of the Freedom Party. I do hope that you receive a positive response. God bless Dominica ??

This was coming. Some of the language used in statements and articles are a direct incitement to violence and those who allowed it and made it should be held accountable. Likewise DNO, you’re mature enough and broad enough to just be a reporter of the news. Where is your questioning and balancing?
Politics in Dominica is too personal and too emotional. I wonder who will pay for the damage now? Not CBI as this is one of the reasons behind this vitriol.

Is that the Freedom Party regretting that they shared the same platform with Lennox and his UWP all day spewing all their hatred and incitement of what happened on the night time? It is a bit late now for that. History will show that the DFP was at the heart of it all and just as guilty as the UWP. It is a bit rich that they are now trying to distance themselves from it.

    • February 8, 2017

Eagle Eyed, while you at it keep in mind that the labor party was hijacked by the Freedom Party, also the man residing in the white twenty seven million dollars is a Freedom Party stalwart including Skerrit, Colin, Ossie Walsh and the others, also this is the samw Freedom Paprty who merged with and joined the Labour Party telling us that the UWP Government was involved in corruption, today the Freedom Part is standing up against Skerrit selling/giving Diplomatic Passports to criminals, people involved in fraudulent activities, money laundering, tax invasion etc, are you suggesting that the party should remain quite, some of you Dominicans are a bunch of fools condoning what Skerrit Jim Jones is doing to Dominica including those who are his supporters and non supporters, one thing for sure fools like you will drink SkerritJim Jones Kool Aid, for when he will say to you guys do what I do and what I say, and the world is coming to an end follow him you fool will do as he say
