DLP administration to embark on community projects across Dominica

The project taking place in the Botanic Gardens

The Dominica Labour Party (DLP) administration will embark on a series of community projects across the island.

This was announced by the Prime Minister Roosevelt Skerrit on Saturday at the Botanic Gardens.

On Saturday, the Prime Minister along with his cabinet colleagues and several volunteers repaired a section of road in the Botanic Gardens.

“The intention here is to reinstate this road is being used by all of us really it is the premier tourism site in the country literally a 100% of tourists that come to Dominica do in fact visit the gardens. We also have the health centre there, the Convent High School, the Convent Prep, a number of parents drop off and pick up their students attending these two schools on a daily basis,” he said.

He said the road will be serving a number of very important services.

Skerrit added that this road project would have cost the government over $300,000 if the work was not done a voluntary basis.

“We decided to target first the Botanical Gardens and improve on the road network so we, in fact, will be saving the taxpayers of Dominica $369 000 because that’s what the road would have cost the government if the government would have to pay for this particular project,” he said.

Skerrit informed that initiative has kicked start the government’s plans to commence its community projects across the island.

“So this is the first of its kind you are going to see every month the party engaging and mobilizing communities in doing community-based project so there are a number of other projects we have on the cards,” he stated.

He said these community projects will be focused on areas where there are institutions which provide care to children and seniors.

“We also have down on the cards to mobilize tradesmen, building suppliers to build homes for needy families in various communities in Dominica,” Skerrit noted.

Meantime, Minister for Tourism and Urban Renewal Senator Robert Tonge has viewed the project as highly important towards the upgrade of tourism.

“This project is extremely important as it relates to urban renewal but not only urban renewal it also relates to tourism the botanical gardens is one of the free sites that anyone can come to I think our locals use it more than our visitors,” said Tonge.

He said initially the road was narrow and thus this project has been sought out to widen the road to also include drains for proper drainage.

Tonge informed that the Ministry of Tourism has plans to re-do the entire area this section was given priority.

“We are working with the Ministry of Finance to see how we will be able to continue this project,” he said.

This is pure showmanship and mamaguy. Sure if they were serious about Dominica, they woukd have used their time, talent, and treasure to fix the whole country. This whole show by the Dlp is just a big show. The Labour Party is about cheap politics n hypocrisy.
Imagine after the CBI exposure by Uwp, Labour Party doing anything to clean its dirty house. Its like they went to confession, and now doing penance by giving back Dominica her money through town hall meetings, grants, plenty rhum n money n paupers pence. Instead of staying home to rest n pray, these folks are put there fooling the poor people. You guys call that performance, we on the other side call that PR, damage control… Such work must be done by qualified folks, not politicians n party faithful who would dance at Skeritt tunes. Not impress, not impress. Create jobs, rid the country of debts, poverty n all the social ills, then you get thumbs up. For now take a thumbs down for making every thing red army Papyshow.

Well the US consulting company is certainly working on overtime! Those antics by the PM and his crew are nothing but pure psychology on a unsuspecting people!

If the intention was to build the country all together – every member of your team would not be dressed in party colors. All you are continuing to achieve is divide and conquer – this will not bode well for such a small nation. One day you preach unity, next day your discriminating (either verbally or physically).

This is too funny. It has reached to the point where the prime ministers and cabinet doing coude mene to save tax payers money. This is nothing but a bad sign and worst to come. Pretty soon you guys will go around carrying water to flush all those toilets from the toilet revolution. What will it take for Dominicans to realize we are in a terrible state of affairs when your prime minister start doing road construction himself. Skerrit has developed the new face of communism in Dominica. It is a watered down version. This has happened because the people of the Country have fallen asleep. Gov Toilets, Gov programs for homes, single moms, Baby diaper program, red clinic, dishing out funds without proposals or plans on expenditure and returns. Just like Venezuela, Cuba, old China, Old Russia, Dominica will suffer economic crisis. I am not wishing. It is inevitable. I blame the people for continuing to elect an ideological psychopath.

Very supportive bunch showed up. These are the true patriots. It’s not ‘what your country can do for you, but what you can do for your country’. Kudos to all those who showed up, very encouraging. Hopefully simultaneous projects can take place monthly because people are willing to come out and help.

You forget to mention there was plenty of free drink and food. I’m sorry but this was no more than a P.R. exercise probably the Mercury people in New York suggested it.
Thinks are so bad right now I don’t trust anything Skerrit does again and that is very sad. I can not vote for a man I do not trust.

Excuse Me!!! After these people have enriched themselves whilst in office you have the balls to be quoting
J F Kennedy. May Shas Tay.

And I hope they were fed at the expense of the entertainment allowances of the ministers and not that of the treasury.

This is a great idea, we can all help a little to push this country’s enhancement.

  10. May 22, 2017

Commendable efforts by the PM, his colleagues and the many volunteers who showed up to assist. It shows that the spirit of koudmen is still alive in Dominica. If we all work together to build back better, we will achieve!

Yeah. And I recommend the the government refunds the Highway Maintenance Levy the drivers pay to maintain the roads. It’s obvious that the PM and others can do the work.

Give people back their hard-earned money!!!!!!!!!!!11

I hope they do the whole of the Gardens and not just that one easy strip. In other countries they would use a 5th of the amount of people to resurface and pave a little road like this. I have no idea why we do not invest in the appropriate machinery. Is it because you want to ensure that people get work? If so this is still a waste, there is other work to be done elsewhere. Instead of using 40 people to do one road use proper equipment and only use 10. Or was it supposed to be a fun project for the ministers to be seen to be doing something in the community. in truth the road at the gardens is a huge joke. a complete mess at a national tourist attraction. glad they made a move to fix one portion of it, even though it is taking much longer than they should be taking.

    May 22, 2017

Can we please stop the road through the Garden being used as a rat-run and parking lot. It was never intended for that. Government should construct a proper bypass so we can have the Garden as an oasis of peace and quiet and be proud of it.
