Dominica among the least populated countries on earth

Dominica has been named among the top ten least populated countries in the world in a report.

According to the report Dominica has an estimated population of 72,500.

The report place Dominica at number 10 among the 10 least populated countries and noted the island’s unspoilt beauty. “It is the youngest island in the Lesser Antilles, still being formed by geothermal-volcanic activity, as evidenced by the world’s second-largest boiling lake. The island features lush mountainous rainforests, home of many rare plant, animal and bird species. There are xeric areas in some of the western coastal regions, but heavy rainfall can be expected inland,” it said.

The least populated country on earth is Vatican City with an estimated population of 800.

The world as a whole is struggling with overpopulation and the related pressures of food scarcity and famine, poverty, unemployment, inadequate water supplies, increasing fuel prices and crime.

Unless populations are controlled in areas of poverty and low GDP, the problems will explode within the next 50 years and affect everyone everywhere.

In Dominica, we are so blessed but complain so much because many want to live beyond their means or to do as the Jones. As a country/island, we do not need to increase the population by increasing the number of people living in poverty.

What we need to do is increase the GDP per capita/person, become as economically viable as possible, and even more importantly, remain a democracy. Tough call but it can be done with a small, manageable and humble population.

wow, did you read this before you posted it? the grestest resource of any nation is it’s human resource, consider the extremely populated countries that Dominica relies on for aid, the problem in Dominica is and always will be, the brain drain issue. For as long as there is a victimization of people based on there political affiliation no matter how valuable their potential contribution bay be, then you will have this effect, you mention GDP, well that in Dominica can only be corrected through manufacturing and an incresed incentive in increasing private sector investments, now understand that if that were to happen, the end result would be an increase in the population. People dont flock to the united states for it’s unspoilt beauty.. it is the money that attracts them, so enjoy your natural beauty while allowing your sons and daughters to leave your shores to become productive elsewhere, and read DNO when another Dominican makes it big out there, and continue to say ” there is no better place in the world to live” and you continue to believe it while you people wallow in abstract poverty, but hey… they can drink clean water.

I wonder why the Chinese and every other person that have seen the effects of over population love Dominica. We have enougth resouces to create a sustainable economy – but for some reason we keep looking on the outside for the solutions. Now some are claiming our population is too small to create a viable economy – how ridiculous. I thought we were in a global economy. Our underlying problem is that we are not being productive – plain ans simple. What we trying to find is right here with us.

We need D’ca to increase it’s popualtion to better develop the country and to compete with other caricom countries..No one is advocating D’ca pop should reach millions we just want the country to have a sustainable pop that would be align with economic development so the country can compete.Reading these comments I realize that some d’cans are very selfish and ignorant but more selfish..the vast majority of people who are commenting and saying No LEAVE DOMINICA ALONEEEEEE I like it the way it is are selfish…I can guarantee you none of them wouldn’t leave their comfortable lives in a develop/populated countries to move to d’ca now..when they’re young and can contribute to the country development..PLZ BUNCH OF HYPOCRITES..

Being 10th among the least populated countries is no reason to be eager to increase our population. In fact, that statistic can be deceptive. The population density is more accurate in determining whether we are over or under-populated.

Our density is somewhere about 250 per square mile. (It varies according to population estimates and I’ve seen 272). Guyana, with a population of 762 000 and an area of 83 000 square miles, has a population density of 9 people per square mile. They certainly have a lot more space for expansion than Dominica. Dominica’s population density is comparable to Cuba’s, a country with over 11 million people and 42000 sq miles. Over 100 countries have population densities less than Dominica’s.

So while that statistic is interesting, it says nothing about our ability to sustain a larger population and to what extent our population can be increased.

Our under population plays a big role in the under development of Dominica. We need to stop this nonsense about untouched nature island. The other islands are just as beautiful as Dominica some of them are even much more beautiful than Dominica (my opinion). In addition some of the other islands are also just as green and can be considered untouched relative to the developed countries. For too long we have been to passive and we dwell on slavery mentalities . We need to broaden our minds and think outside the box. At this point we should be prepared to open the land and exploit our resources, build infrastructure , welcome ALL people who are interested in visiting or investing in Dominica.
I believe that aside from unemployment one of our primary set back is the size of the population- a total turn off for investors foreign or local. It is obvious however that in other to solve the under population problem there must be incentives – mainly jobs, jobs jobs. Until we can boost employment and create job opportunities people will be reluctant to have kids, the 20000 Dominicans in Antigua and St Martin, would rather live in those islands than to return to a jobless situation.

It’s amazing that so many Domninicans leave for a better life, but they continue to tell those at home that they must keep things the same. Don’t build proper two-lane roads, no lights at night, emergency vehicles can’t enter and leave Mahaut in a timely manner because of congestion. The hospital needs to be rebuilt because of mold on the walls. We need a working movie theatre and more sporting facilities for our youth. Not to mention an aiport that accommodates night-landing including at least American Eagle.

Let’s never move forward and create nothing new. Just keep the same underdeveloped country while our citizens continue to migrate. St. Kitts is also beautiful with proper roads and a real jet airport. Get real for crying out loud!!

        August 31, 2011

@ Anthony p Ishmael. Don’t try to manipulate the comment u……… Of course there is need for improvement of facilities, but don’t try to con Dominicans into selling out for development. Tell us how we as Dominicans can be the driving force behind the development you talking about and I am all for it. Let DOMINICANS BE the ones to be ENRICHED BY THEIR COUNTRYS DEVELOPMENT because we not prosituting our country for no Chinese hotels and prime property owned by foreigners. Don’t try and insult our collective intelligence. We are DOMINICA and we STAND TOGETHER….

With this latest census I won’t be surprised if Dominica’s population is now 65,000 or less, which I’m sure would move the island up the list some that was just published. (Well actually if it was 65K, the country would still be number 10, just a lot closer to #9). However, I do think that a population of only 60,000 now is not out of the question. There have been a LOT of people leaving Dominica more and more lately. In fact I could probably name 20 people I know that have left the island, most likely for good or for several years, from the past 2 years.

Also, like some people have said, I’m sure Dominica could sustain much more than the all-too-well-known population of 70,000. DA probably could support upwards of 90,000 or so, but we just don’t. Why? Well partially due to our terrain, and partially because the people of DA don’t want to spoil the beauty of the island by tearing down more trees in order to build new homes and probably new villiages all together.

But given how it’s virtually a known fact that the population is DECREASING, what I just said above won’t even matter. If the new census data that comes out shows an increase in population, I will cry foul and say that cannot be. If it says that the population has only lost between 1 and 3,000 people, I’ll find that a little bit odd.

I believe Dominica’s new population is between 61 and 65,000 people.

Interesting list, none the less, for it includes places I haven’t ever heard about before.

for some reason i see this as a good thing..we are truly unspoilt like the rest of the Caribbean island..which is why 90% of the people who come here, they come to experience the true Caribbean. We are unique, let us love it & keep it

  21. yep

  22. DE CARIBBEAN CHANGE,
    August 31, 2011

The fact is we are very mountainous and forested and that could be an impediment why we have a small population despite our lush vegetation and greenery and a healthy ecosystem. But we love it. People love it. Think of Guyana, 83,000 square miles with the same population as Barbados, 166 square miles. Why? Because Guyana is densely forested, very little flat land, and mountainous. That’s why.

  23. THOUGHTFULL
    August 31, 2011

Interstingly, when i read the article on msn i was happy. This is not the onlt category in that type of article; there is also the richest countries, the poorest countries, the most overpopullated etc. The article was not one lambassing or shadowing the countries. It did not say anything negative about any country. By the way, I have heard us talk recently about how St. Kitts is far more developed than Dominica, yet they are at #8. Take the article for what it is and not what we hate about our country. Really interesting, even when outsiders talk good about Dominica we get vex.
And certainly, while we run out to the foreign lands, the people of the same land run to Dominica; yes, ask the foreigners who reside here. Thats the world’s practice.
By the way, I wonder if the people from the UK,USA,Antigua,Guadeloupe,Europe,Puerto, Rico etc. think the same way about Dominicans in their country as we think about foriegners in ours?

    • DE CARIBBEAN CHANGE,
      August 31, 2011

St. Kitts more developed, not true. That is why I have suggested that the slum ares in Roseau Central, like Pound, should be demolished, the areas cleared, and designated for commercial purposes only, in order to bring more business and revenue, and people, and jobs into Roseau, and relocate these people on the outskirts and surroundings of Roseau by continuing to develop the outskirts into residential and recreational areas including limited commercial business.

For me to believe this report I would have to believe ” The cow jumped over the moon” rhyme we use to sing in elementary school. There is no way we have more than 63,000 people actually living in Dominica today. All of our villages are empty and our towns have not increased in population. If this survey was conducted during Christmas, Creaole Festival, or Carnival amybe yes. Otherwise it is just not true. Dominican’s migrate on a daily basis because Skerrit is not able to dao anything to keep our people employed. In fact even he himself wants to disassociate himself with us by renouncing his Dominican citizenship while in power. Furthermore, he encourages those students he gave scholarship to study abroad (especially those he is close to) to stay in the US because DA does not have jobs. So we need to do an honest survey and give a true and honest report especially from 2000 to 2011. Labour Power!

Vatican City is a country (I can understand why you doubt that as its situated in Rome, Italy).

Which ever is true, 65,000 or 72,000 thats still not enough people. We want the island to continue to advance, and that can only be done if the population grows. Even an additional 5000-10000 will give it a better chance, and that can only be achieved if: A) Dominicans abroad start returning. B) Non Dominicans decide to settle here.

OK we dont want it to become overpopulated with shanty towns/slums. It can still have its natural unspoilt beauty.

Keep crying for development Dominicans, when it’s too late and there is nothing we can do because we’re developed and indebted to our developers, then and only then will we realize that, we never needed development, we were blessed and fine without it, and we had our slice of heaven here on earth because we took care of it. Unlike elsewhere!

Bringing foreigners interests here will do nothing but forward the interest of the foreigners and not the Dominican people. We are selling out our country slowly but surely, I AM A TRUE DOMINICAN….What about you?…..ARE YOU READY TO SELL YOUR LAND FOR WHITE/CHINEY MAN PRINTED PAPER? Too late….

We should be proud that we are not over run by people and all the problems that this causes. Imagine if we were like Haiti with all of our hillsides denuded and not enough money to go round for social services etc. Dominicans count your blessings.

In the Name of Allah, Most Gracious, Most Merciful.

We in the Commonwealth of Dominica are not concerned about being the least populated. What we are concerned about is a sense of well being spiritually, security as it relates to crime and more spending power. The prophet Muhammad said that there are 4 comforts in this life: 1. A spacious home 2. A virtuous spouse 3. A good neighbor 4. A good vehicle.

In the Name of JESUS CHRIST, Most High, we are grateful!

        August 31, 2011

Of course you are free to worship Jesus Christ. I’ll worship the One who SENT Jesus Christ peace be upon Him only without any mediators. I am not a polytheist, I do not involve two people in my worship, just one. The one who created the universe and the one GREATER than Jesus peace be upon him. When I say Allah I am referring to the Arabic way of calling the Most High.

I simply wanted to clear this up. I hope this does not turn into a religious dialogue as the article was about Dominica being one of the least populated countries.

Sheldon why u don’t keep your comment to yourself. You and your idol and stick god

      • Dawoud A Darroux
        August 31, 2011

@ Ebeh weh, we do not worship idols and sticks. I think you are confusing Islam with Hinduism. A little research will lead the way. Why should I keep my comments to myself? Am I not entitled to freedom of responsible speech?

Allah is simply the Arabic way to refer to the Most High who sent Jesus, David, Moses, Abraham and all the other prophets on earth. If you are to take a bible written in Arabic the world Allah is used to refer to the name of the Most High.

if you have read the article you would have found out that it said with a population of 72 000 so actually it has not gone down, listen to the news about the last census info.

  39. carrying capacity
    August 31, 2011

This article is a bit misleading in that it does not take into consideration Dominica’s carrying capacity.
Much higher population would not be sustainable.

    • Anthony P. Ismael
      August 31, 2011

Dominica does have the ability to carry more than 72,000 inhabitants and it is sustainable. Our thinking is the unsustainable part of the island.

Just look at how modernized equipment and machinery is slowly transforming our road network and the ability to travel with more ease.

Imagine if the same sustainable approach was applied to housing and other infrastructural advancements. We need to learn how to maximize the use of space at home.

WE DONT NEED NO F*&*() MAXIMIZE USE OF SPACE…. I CANNOT STAND PEOPLE WHO CANNOT SEE PAST A DOLLAR SIGN……GO!!!!!!!!!!! POPULATE…THEN I WILL HEAR ALL WHO DONT HAVE VISA AND CITIZENSHIP CRYING………EGWAH SET OF PEOPLE….NEVER SATISFIED…

    August 31, 2011

Oh my oh my, we really need to start importing people…lets take them from Brazil, China, Haiti, Central America, Venezuela, Asia…America, Europe..wherever we can get people and get people into Dominica.

Those that leave DA already, they are not coming back…THEY ARE NOT COMING BACK AND MORE WILL LEAVE.

    • WIKILEAKS
      August 31, 2011

I see that Dominican’s can’t handle the truth? If you all love DA, one day you all will understand what I am saying. Because if we don’t do population planning, onde day we will wake up and we will be down to 50,000 people. Economic activity will come to a halt and it will be hard to really move this great county forward.

So unless we have not learned how to assimilate people like how SXM, Barbados, Antigua, St Kitts, St Lucia…etc…we will be left in the cold…outside.

Dominica, the world is changing and it’s changing real fast. We need to get with the program and if we have to get non-Dominicans to create an economic zone to stay competitive and for DA to survive.

im bitter because the vision i have for dominica is not a BIG NEW YORK IN THE MIDDLE OF THE CARIBBEAN SEA. why do we HATE TO BE DIFFERENT…. what we ARE and what we HAVE is what makes DOMINICA SPECIAL. AND RARE, just that those who have never seen NEW YORK THINK THAT BIG CITY IS ALL THAT IS WORTH SEEKING. well buddy, my country can do with a little MORE PRODUCTIVITY BUT I LOVE DOMINICA FOR WHAT SHE IS!!!! THATS WHY IM BITTER. BECAUSE SOME PEOPLE DONT SEE WHAT THEY HAVE UNTIL IT IS GONE….THEN IS TO HEAR THEIR DUMB a&& CRYING….I WOULD JUS………………

That doesn’t come with shock!!! what can be expected when migration is being promoted by our own legislation with little and no mechanisms being implemented to encourage RETURN MIGRATION!
But we can’t blame only the government because we cannot wait full fledged for our government to provide…. We have become so influenced by the economics of other Supreme economies that we ourselves have adapted to their way of life and the urgency to depend on the government therefore EMIGRATION becomes the only option to escape the struggles…
But one day…. we shall OVERCOME! 1 Day

To Mike and Jean Muckian, thank you for the information, some useful information I was not aware of. However, I would like to tell you this, and I know that I’m speaking on behalf of a few more loyal die hard Dominicans. We are happy with our unspoilt beauties, and our natural rainforest, our fresh water and home grown foods, we do not wish to be over populated at any time, which might certainly spoil all that for us. We enjoy our Nature Isle just as it is, tranquility, beauty and freedom. Too many cooks spoil the soup, and the soup is just fine thus far.
