Dominica celebrates Local Government Month

Local government commissioner John Fountain wants central government to tackle the issue of crime and violence as the nation celebrates Local Government Month.

“We are expecting the authorities to create some kind of forum where these issues can be addressed. They would have to bring on board other expertise to assist in that,” he said.

Local government month is being celebrated from May 01 all the way to the 31st under the theme “Consolidating Our Gains, Building Stronger Communities”.

This is the 23rd year the event is being observed.

Fountain also said a consultation with the local government commissioner and an awards ceremony will form an integral part of the month’s observance.

“We are also going into partnership with other persons so we want to encourage persons to hike some segments of the national trail. During the month we hope to have clean up campaigns. We are still in the time of beautification and we are still trying to promote clean and green,” he said.

An address by community development Minister Gloria Shillingford Tuesday, will officially kick-start the activities.

Addresses by the Mayor Roseau and Portsmouth are also expected during the month’s activities.
