Dominica establishes diplomatic relations; signs visa waiver agreement with Ukraine

Dominica’s acting High Commissioner, Janet Charles and Her Excellency Natalia Galibarenko, Ambassador of Ukraine

On the 15th of May 2019, the Commonwealth of Dominica concluded the signing of a Visa Waiver Agreement with Ukraine at a brief ceremony at the Dominica High Commission in London.  Acting High Commissioner, Janet Charles joined by her counterpart, Her Excellency Natalia Galibarenko, Ambassador of Ukraine signed an agreement on the exemption of visa requirements.  This agreement will allow citizens visa free access to each other’s country.

Preceding the signing of the visa waiver agreement, a joint communique establishing diplomatic relations between the Commonwealth of Dominica and Ukraine was signed on the 25th of April during a brief ceremony at the Embassy of Ukraine by the two diplomatic envoys.

Acting High Commissioner Charles informed Ambassador Galibarenko that this is the beginning of a new relationship between Dominica and Ukraine and an opportunity for both countries to forge partnerships and cooperation in areas of mutual interests, such as investment and tourism promotion.  Both diplomatic envoys agreed to work more closely and to forge partnerships in these and other areas.

On behalf of the Minister of Foreign and CARICOM Affairs, the Honourable Francine Baron, and the Government of Dominica, Acting High Commissioner Charles expressed her government’s ongoing commitment to build strong and enduring bonds of friendship with Ukraine and Europe

Ukraine is situated in Central-Eastern Europe with a population of 42.5 million.  It is the 46th largest country in the world.

Judging by comments section under this article the majority of citizens of Dominica have some sort of inferiority complex. Its true, Ukraine doesn’t give a crap about your tiny speck of land in the ocean. But saying …. about Ukraine without any knowledge what country it is and what it went through on the map of European history just shows average level of education in your land.

I really find it bizarre how some people are so much against the CBI program. Dominica program is not any different from any other countries such Ireland for example. The only difference is the investment amount which is considerably less for obvious reasons. The US, NZ, Portugal, Greece and Turkey have similar programs and with all the concerns some might have, we do not find all such criticism by nationals of the said countries. The applicants go through a very thorough security check and yes there might be individuals who then become involved in criminal acts but same apply on other countries where we find immigrants and naturalized individuals involved in a criminal act like natives as well. I believe the CBI helped Dominica as it helped other nations. Some of you complains about discrimination against immigrants in other more developed countries but at the same time I find them making negative comments about those who were naturalized through CBI which is bizarre.

I am really questioning the role of politics in our people’s intelligence and common sense. We already have visa-free travels for countries under the Schengen Area which is by far much more appealing to anyone so I doubt anyone from the middle east is looking at Ukraine over places like France, Norway or even the Netherlands. Most importantly, visa-free travel does not mean they attain our passports to become citizens of these other countries. Lifting visa bans on a country says something good about our people and most importantly the country. And we all know what this says in terms of attracting FDI.

If Skerrit stays in power then the Schengen miracle is going to end very soon. You all know that the EU is already watching Dominica in regards to money laundering, passport selling and use of their aid.

I am a proud Dominica living in Europe italy to be exact and no European is rushing to go to Ukraine it is a country known for corruption and prostitution. And I highly doubt that they want any Dominicas there given their stance on immigration. Ukraine was one of the first countries to close their door the poor and hungry and war torn people coming from the Middle East and African countries. They give nothing for free. It is my opinion that they need more places tp launder their money since trump is about to down. And Skerrit might make a few extra money to support his life style but at what cost to the Dominican nation and the reputation or the Caribbean people as a whole. # follow the money

What type of business plans will be established with people of Dominica? will they establish cheaper air flights to travel to Ukraine? Which Dominican will travel to Ukraine for vacation? they introducing visa free? the cost of airfare alone is a already a problem, don’t worry they know who they are establishing it for ,not for ordinary citizens like you and I. It’s for them selves and their gangs.
They know very well it is very hard economically for us to travel to Ukraine.

Ukraine, whoa, nice, Just another country used to make our passports more attractive to people from the middle east to trying to get into Europe. How about visa free travel to Canada? we had it before I’ll not say America cause that next to impossible. Or Denmark? or Sweden or Swizerland? or Norway? Or Estonia those countries so Dominicans can spread their ways and get brand new opportunity.
    But Ukraine…smh

Dominicans will never ever trace, nor recover all the monies salted away in all those far away countries we are now associated with, and lets remember, when things take a turn for the worse their banks freezing all monies that cannot be accounted for legally .
I know for sure RS not saving his money in Dominica, and is very wary of America , so we may as well say bye bye to all what is salted away .

lamanidiot we had visa free travel to Canada before have you forgotten that? Do you remember why it was terminated? , when? and under which government? It was terminated by Canada under the reign of the UWP during a period of horrendous management of the Citizenship program. Please note that under the Labour party management not one single country has ended visa free travel arrangement. In fact the opposite has occurred; a significant increase the the power of our passport and the number of countries which we can travel visa free. Yes, given the economic importance of the citizenship program it makes good strategic sense to expand the number of countries with which this arrangement can be obtained. But what it also does it that for the ordinary citizen it increases our ability to travel international for leisure, business and other purposes.

UKRAINE…. What are the benefits to the citizens of my beloved country. ***** This agreement will allow citizens visa free access to each other’s country.**** I really don’t get it why our Government insists on building ties with these countries…whats in it for us the people. Why not build relationships with the US and England.. Our children go to these countries for higher Education, Our Citizens go there for a better life. What can we do in Ukraine? Explain to us the citizens how this is beneficial to us. I for sure don’t understand….

“Commonwealth of Dominica concluded the signing of a Visa Waiver Agreement with Ukraine”

So, what is the purpose of all this establishing of diplomatic relationship, which are of no benefit to Dominica?
I am a Dominican born living in America, if I want I can get on a flight to Ukraine without a visa, unless I intend to remain there for less than ninety days, within 180 days.
The question is how many people in Ukraine ever heard of a place called Dominica, and are eager to travel to an unheard of place?
How many Dominicans are eager to travel to Ukraine?
How many Ukrainians are presently residing in Dominica, or have visited in the last year.
How many Dominicans are residing in Ukraine.
What do we hope to gain out of this relationship?
Absolute nothing except another boast by Roosevelt Skerrit and Francine Baron that Dominica has established the most diplomatic relationship “in the world.”

Another lawless pro Trump country added to the Skeritt;s list. Ukraine’s human rights record is bismal where the Ukrainian government continued restrictions on freedom of expression, freedom of information, and media freedom. A place where social discontent continue to grow with mounting economic problems and corruption. Ukraine’s Security Service (SBU) engages in prolonged detention of anti-corruption activist. Why Skeritt is so attracted to these governments?
