Dominica ranked among top ethical countries for 2014

Dominica plans to minimize carbon emissions by 2020
Dominica plans to minimize carbon emissions by 2020

Dominica has been ranked among the top ten ethical countries in the world by the magazine Ethical Traveler.

Every year the magazine reviews the policies and practices of scores of nations in the developing world to compile the list.

Ten countries are then selected for doing the most impressive job of promoting human rights, preserving their environments, and supporting social welfare – all while creating a lively, community-based tourism industry.

Dominica is among three countries which made it to the top ten in 2014 for the first time. A plan by the island to become carbon negative – that is, minimize and offset carbon emissions – by 2020 helped Dominica make the cut.

The complete list of the top ten countries is below.

The Bahamas
Barbados *
Cape Verde*
Chile
Dominica
Latvia *
Lithuania *
Mauritius *
Palau *
Uruguay *

Countries with asterisks have appeared on previous lists.

This is how Ethical Traveler explains how the list is created.

“To begin, Ethical Traveler conducts a survey of developing nations — from Afghanistan to Zimbabwe — to identify the world’s best travel and tourism destinations. We begin our research by focusing on three general categories: Environmental Protection, Social Welfare and Human Rights. For each of these categories we look at information past and present so that we understand not only the current state of a country, but how it has changed over time. This helps us select nations that are actively improving the state of their people, government and environment.

In this first phase of our process, we consider country scores from a variety of databases related to one of the three categories, using information from sources like Freedom House, the Millennium Challenge Corporation, Reporters Without Borders, UNICEF, GLBT resources and the World Bank. After identifying about two dozen “short list” performers, we turn to detailed case research, focusing on actions these governments have taken over the year to improve (or in some cases, weaken) practices and circumstances in the countries. This year, responding to requests from our members, we also added Animal Welfare to our list. Although this issue not as codified in our candidate nations as it is in fully developed countries, we found the research revealing.

There is more to making our list, of course, than excelling in these categories. Each country selected as a Best Ethical Destination also offers the opportunity to experience unspoiled natural beauty, and to interact with local people and cultures in a meaningful, mutually enriching way.

Please note that this report is not an exhaustive explanation of our methodology, but a brief overview of how we conduct and verify our research. An appendix listing our sources will be sent upon request. We also understand that no country, particularly those facing significant economic limitations, is faultless. Our goal is to encourage the behaviors we see as creating a safer and more sustainable world.”

I really do not see what Dominicans celebrate so much for. The message clearly states the following: Supporting social welfare- The Red Clinic. Preserving the environment- The Geothermal project, The Asphalt Plant in the Layou River. Supporting Human Rights- Machine Guns in front of the state Palace on the appointment of the President. What are we shouting about. The story never spoke about the biggest cabinet in the OECS, The Three built by one minister, the bin and fertilizer Bobol, the 2 million dollar house, projects only for chinesse nationals, unemployment among the youths. I wonder what they would have to say about that.
That is the reality, lets dig deeper on the bread and butter issues!!!

Who the cap fits. Trevor and % no one prevents you all from speaking and you cannot prevent people from disagreeing with you all. You must speak never hold your peace.
You and UWP have made the political process a people thing instead of an issue thing. DLP supporters are being called all kinds of degrading names so labour party are hitting back. Everything good the government does is criticized in a negative way. Protest and boycott is the UWP way. The whole process is trying to make DLP supporters ashame of their leaders and go underground ,using the word “Change” as a political slogan.
Let us look at one example. The government is adopting a policy to replace pit latrine with modern water toilets. This should be encouraged and helped. This is a departure from the plantation system when people used the bay front, the bushes, the riverside, the poe and bucket toilets.
Even though we do not like the government we show support for a sustainable idea. We should be saying ,”what took them so long” The next level should be modern waste treatment plants.

Being in the middle of the eastern Caribbean, one of the most popular tourist destination on earth, Dominica finds itself in this line up
      http://www.garfors.com/2013/01/the-25-least-visited-countries-in-world.html

Whilst all other countries around Dominica thrive we suffer and seem to learn nothing from our friends who are doing better than us.

ON the sustainable development scale Dominica is moving in the right direction according to the US STATE Department. The world bank , the IMF, the Ethical Traveler and other non- government are giving Dominica creditable and positive reviews which is putting Dominica and the DLP in a good light (….let it shine…)This is a good image for the country, a small country with limited resources. What good management !how do we do it. Kudos to the people of Dominica, CONGRATULATIONS IN THE HIGHEST! We can succeed.
Let UWP continue to blow bubbles in the air with their blue vexed mouths.

Everything that is negative that is said about DA the UWP and its supporters believe but where there is positive news they claim that it is incorrect or fraudulent. Trevor i know you brother, and i know your love for Dominica. Unfortunately the Dominica that you love so much is led by leaders who have been taken over by greed. It is a Dominica where the poor is struggling his guts out to live, not being able to pay basic utility bills. Unemployment and poverty iare extremely high. Our passports are sold hither, thither and yon, while we are being told by the PM ‘Go to hell’, ‘Go To Hell’ ‘Go To Hell’.
You must keep on blogging here. No one can stop you. I guess your friends also know the type of Dominica we are living in, in 2014. That’s why THIS GOVERNMTNT NEEDS TO BE SENT PACKING AT THE NEXT GENERAL ELECTION.
Your village the bastion of Labour Party for innumerable years is virtually abandoned, while leaders are lining their pockets, and impoverishing the country. SHAME ON THEM.

        To %

I listen to these people and I really do feel sorry for them. My late Dad was a minister in this Labour party government and he sacrificed everything to help this country not the party as many people believe.

So when I talk on here I am not speaking from an ignorant point of view.. I know what my Dad went through but will never spew it on here.

I just want to see the country and the people prosper. I just spoke to a very close relative who has always voted labour and he is adamant that there is no way he is voting these guys. He will be voting the UWP and this speaks volume.

So when I speak I speak from an informed position.

Lets keep trying to let people understand that we need to rise as one and get this country moving in one prosperous direction with transparency..

Peace out man and God Bless

You just don’t appreciate what the current government is doing for the country. There is so much improvement in this country over the past years that your political agenda blinds your judgement. Do you really think that the opposition can do what has been done by the present government for the country. You think that the present government is lining their pockets while the rest of the country suffers. You better get a hold of your feeling and look at all the facts before making such slanderous accusations.

What makes you think other countries and at least some of their nationals do not experience poverty and are not struggling their guts out? Some of the poor, if not all of them in Dominica are better off than the poor in other countries.
Are you residing in a tropical or cold country, the latter where you require more clothing and paraphernalia which are expensive? In winter homes have to be heated for approximately nine months of the year. The cost of electricity is high because it gets darker in the early evenings and is still dark early mornings to at least approximately 7:30 am. …And the list goes on. They also have to contend with politics and politicians. Think of others and be grateful for what you have.

BTW, do you know that even with all the suffering that YOU think your dad endured under DLP he still supported the party up to hi slast breath? Ever wondered why he would do such a thing if the DLP was so mean to him?

Trevor, everyone including you have a right to their opinion and that should be respected. Just as everyone has a right to support whatever political party that they want to. When one supports a political party that you don’t means that they have a difference in opinion and belief as to what is better for the country. That by no means indicates that neither of you love DA less. However, when one continuously highlights negativity about DA and downplays the positive or indicates that such positivity is untrue; their intention must be construed as being dishonest and malicious. Where one comes to such conclusion, the others commitment to and love for country must come into question. You can support your political party but please let us all do it without destroying our beautiful country.

We are not going to sit on our hands to get the same treatment as Patrick John and Edward LeBlanc. I’m impressed that Dominica made the list without having to bow down to the “GLBT resources” that were included in the calculation. It just goes to show that a nation does not have to bow down to perversion in order to be a quality place. Not on the list, but one of the reasons I personally rank Dominica high on Human Rights is because Dominica has not given into the powerful countries like America and China and made abortion murder legal. The best way to remain ethical is to stick with protecting human rights, including those of the Unborn, and standing against perversions of both God and nature’s order and these ethics will be reflected in all parts of society. It’s nice to know that there are still places in the world, albeit few, where one can take one’s family and not have to worry about perverts and corruption on every street corner. As far as the naysayers go, it is the people that make a country what it is, not the politicians. Keep up the good work of being a lonely light of ethics and hope in an evil world.

Boy I was crying in my sleep for my beautiful country but now The Ethical Traveller has put my mind at rest. :-D :-D

So we have a wonderfully ethical country right?
Ok People, you heard what the ethical Traveller said especially Angelo Alleyne, KEEP CALM AND KEEP ON THANKING THE PM :-D :-D :-D :-D :-D :-D :-D .

Its not April fools day yet, why is DNO putting this on here? :-D :-D

      Man read the article carefully.

This has nothing to do with political ethics or whatever.

The criteria are listed clearly: promoting human rights, preserving environments, and supporting social welfare – all while creating a lively, community-based tourism industry.

What does this have to do with passport selling and the like?

I am not a fan of the government but sometimes there are things that we have to give the island thumbs up to.

Ahh, Ben Dover, how are you gonna convince Trevor Fabien otherwise? Do you see how quickly he jumped on Skerrit’s back? Trevor is like many who have an orgasmic reaction to applaud any negative news they hear about Dominica without pausing to think if it is true or false yet, they will use all sorts of jumbie logic to shoot down positive news about the island. Still, they call themselves “patriots” and members of a team working for Dominica. I will bet if God tells Trevor that he loves Dominica, Trevor will deny this too.

You cannot distinguish between a country being ethical and the government. They go hand in hand so I don’t really know what you are saying.

Its time you bloody people start waking up

Think maybe they got the wrong Dominica ?

If you cannot love your country and your people, you are not a child and disciple of God.

The truth will reveal like Nasio said what some of u don’t want to admit these people will come under u all bed and retrieve it to let the world know.Great job to the people that saw it fit to change the way we been thinking for so long I guess that’s the change they all been asking for look it, there it is served on a global plate.

  42. March 12, 2014

In spite of all the negatives from Inside Dominica, it is great news from people outside Dominica giving an impartial report of the state of ethics in Dominica.

This is great news that all media outlets and loud mouthers should help disseminate. Let’s see how many heed this memo. 8)

I would like to know whether those people who compiled this report have ever spent quality time in Dominica, them man just sit behind their desk and write anything.

So Roy clearly with the prognosis that u came up with it is fare to say all the other negative reports that was made about people and Dominica on a whole they were all made by people sitting behind desk and never really went out and do an in your face investigation.

Tell that to some Dominicans who don’t understand how statistics work. It can be distorting.
The feel good factor that some Dominicans will get from that will not be able to be converted to any type of currency and be able to pay for any food or bills.

Its all about what is actually happening on the ground so I completely agree with you about these pen pushers and desk huggers :-D :-D :-D

It’s wrong because it’s good news right! If it was bad news it would be correct. Some Dominicans are just too wicked and don’t like their country. They only think about themselves.

Roy Williams was never known for his smarts so, i am not surprised by his post. Besides, for a man who spends most of his time in Florida listening to Q95 how does Roy Williams now pretend to know so much about Dominica? SMFH!

Roy, you remember that when you were growing up some people felt you were too big for your shoes , and that you were too bostar. I spite of their efforts ,you remained positive and succeeded in being on the executive of the DLP and a manager in both the private and public sector. It was not Skeritte who stoned you out of Dominica . You and Dennis were given the same treatment. Skeritte was only Five years old then.

Lennox and Thomson need to explain why this cannot be correct since DA is always first on the negative lists. This is not good for the UWP. Kudos to the government!!
