Dominica to establish diplomatic office in Toronto

Vince Henderson

Dominica will have a diplomatic presence in Toronto before the end of the year.

The island’s permanent representative and ambassador to the United Nations, Vince Henderson, made the announcement last Saturday night at the Commonwealth of Dominica Ontario Association’s (CDOA) 41st anniversary celebration in Scarborough.

The decision to establish a consular office in the city comes in the wake of last month’s closure of the Organization of Eastern Caribbean States (OECS) High Commission in Ottawa which was operational since in 1982. In light of the international financial crisis and global recession, the OECS Heads of Government concluded it was no longer sustainable or viable to operate the diplomatic office.

So the OECS as a whole cannot afford a diplomatic office in Canada but Dominica can? What are the intended benefits of this office? Or is it another sham to allow an ex government minister to live luxuriously off the cannot-afford-it state of Dominica

      The intended benefits are simple:
      1. A cuoosh job for one of the boys who will lost his government seat soon

      2. Office jobs for a few young ladies who will do anything in support of the administration

How many people approached the government asking for a diplomatic mission in Toronto? Is this a case of if you build it they will come?

Why can’t the OECS get together and offer joint representation in Toronto, so they can reduce the cost of having individual offices and staff? In this day of instant communication, one would think people have less use for brick and mortar offices. The banks have recognized that and are closing branches to reduce cost. Why is the government going in the opposite direction?

Here we go again; during the Freedom Party time we had a system of joint representation in those places and for good reason including economics;guess what people Ambassador Maynard was a champion and part of that strategy–Maynard what has changed nuh are we really making progress towards OECS integration or is it as usual lip service and or opportunities for the party and for the boys. Maynard you have the experience so you tell us.

Vince, tell the people the truth. The OECS own a building in Ottawa. You guys want to have large office, the office could have been operated from the High Commissioner’s home.

Better yet the Canadian Government would have paid for the office space. The truth is Antigua has not paid it share of the high Commission for some time.

while all of the OECS opening consulate in Toronto, Jamaica and Barbados are reaping the reward and tapping into the resources that are available to the Caribbean contries under the “Harper Plan”.

As to why OECS is closing down and Dominica is opening is another issue, questions, questons, questions…no answers.

The office that they got in New York is a mess, now they feel they can handle one in Toronto, go right ahead my brothers….but just be careful with your recruiting process, open the application for all qualified to apply. Please do not do like when you all were recruiting for your New York office.

Think people think….these offices that these guys set up in the US play a very important role in gathering voters to offer plane tickets and even voter registration…the next election may not be too far away. Keep watching them closely.

It is a good idea to have such level of representation however are we financially equipped for the task. I am a bit concerned as collectively the island could not financially support the consulate establishment. I hope those in authority can come up with an idea that would be of no significant cost to the already over burdened tax payers of Dominica.
