Dominican book ‘Rising Caribbean Tides’ to be made into a movie

Author of the book 'Rising Caribbean Tides' Dr. Juliana Maglorie.

With an estimated cost of US$100,000, Dr. Juliana Maglorie will bring her book ‘Rising Caribbean Tides’ to life through a film to be produced in Dominica.

The project was introduced to the public on Monday, Nov. 1, 2010 at Fort Young Hotel under the chairmanship of Lennox Honeychurch.

Production of the movie is scheduled to begin in January with a time-line of one month to six weeks. Some 60 years of collective professional management, directing, cinematography and editing out of Los Angeles, California, will bring the venture to life.

Hawk Productions together with Kenzie Films will produce the movie with the assistance of the author, renowned Dominican artist Alwin Bully, and historian Lennox Honeychurch.

The tail depicts a Dominican’s experiences of the sea and its importance in the day-to-day life of the Caribbean people.

According to the author, the book was initially a venting project developed to preserve the memory of her late father, who is featured as the main character of what is also to be considered something of a biography.

She says the title ‘Rising Caribbean Tides’ speaks of the natural tides of life, family, birth and death.

“It’s a story of all of us. It is an experience that I hope will open doors for Dominicans and for the actors,” the author said.

The cast will be entirely local to preserve the experience and passion of the story through the authenticity of the Dominican culture, the author said.

One of the characters in the film, French surgeon Dr. Muller, is actually one of the few, if not the only, person that will be playing himself.

Charles Maynard, OECS ambassador and former education minister, who was present at the launch, said “there are few biographies about our people and our culture and I am very pleased with this… We’re celebrating Dominica and Dominicans who deserve to be celebrated”.

He said the film is a positive marketing tool for Dominica as an historical piece. “I am very pleased to be associated with this venture,” Maynard said.

Olu Obonyo will spearhead the financing of the venture.

“I have no doubt that it will be successful,” he said as he called on individuals and organizations to invest.
