The Dominica Nurses Association (DNA) is delighted to announce its achievement at the Caribbean Nurses Organization (CNO) 30th Biennial Conference, which was held on the beautiful island of Antigua and Barbuda, on October 16th -22, 2016.

The conference was held under the theme, “Nurses and midwives: Pioneers in Health Care”. There were twenty Caribbean islands represented.

Dominica was represented by a contingent of two voting delegates, Dyan Cornelius, the secretary of the national association and Jessica Cuffy- David, the awardee for the CNO Nurse of the year award, two board members of CNO, Mignon Rolle- Shillingford, the Assistant Treasurer and Debra Roach- Philip, the Regional Director for Region 3.

The two others were two Dominican Nurses who now reside in the USA, Joan Peltier and Dr. Agathine Scotland.

The conference was held at the Grand Royal Beach Resort.

The week was a success, with both learning opportunities and fun. We were pleased to be gain knowledge from the five days of plenary sessions, and business meetings.

It was a privilege to celebrate a cocktail, with the Governor General, His Excellency, Sir. Rodney Williams at his state house. There was a cultural evening where each island shared its culture and the fun time ended with a home coming dinner and dance, sponsored by the Antigua Nurses Association since the Organization was founded on this island, by Antiguan, Nurse Pioneer, and Mrs. Mavis Harney-Brown.

Congratulations are in order for the President of the Dominica Nurses Association and Ward Sister Debra Roach–Philip on her achievement, as she emerged the recipient of the Mavis Harney Award, for Outstanding Clinical Nursing Practice in the Region.

Sister Philip was also recognized by the members of Region 3 and others who were impressed by her hard work and excellence during her two-year tenure. As a result, she was re-elected unanimously by the delegates of Region 3.

Mignon Rolle- Shillingford was re- elected to the position of Assistant treasurer.

Jessica Cuffy-David was also awarded the CNO nurse of the year for Dominica. Nurse Cuffy- David was the recipient of the Dominica Nurses Association, Elaine Pringle Nurse of the Biennium award, in August 2016.

Dominica Nurses have done well and will continue to excel.

Congratulations to all of you especially Nurse Jessica Cuffy. When negative things are said about nurses, the comments are numerous but there’s nothing here unless DNO is moderating. Continue to make Dominica proud lighting a path for the younger ones to follow.
