Dominican student arrested for visa violation in the US

A Dominican student was among 40 people arrested during a student-visa enforcement operation in north Texas and Oklahoma in the United States.

According to an article on the website Americans for Legal Immigration, the arrests were made during a 12-day operation  conducted by U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) officials.

Those apprehended included forty immigration status violators, visa overstays and foreign students who were arrested for violating the conditions of their nonimmigrant visas.

well is either you in or your out. USA changing like everywhere else. boarders are tightening so you should know. just brace yourself for your unwelcome, humiliating reentry into DOMINICA.

  2. June 11, 2012

We have got the same sort of problem here in Great Britian, but it’s occuring mostly with the Asians, applying for student visa and attending a Bogus College with false & forged documents, also working and abusing their visa conditions.
Sorry for those who got caught out,but sometimes the system in America can be a “BUBBLE” and the lesser and unfortunate ones get caught out.

I don’t care what most of you have to say about America, as for me personally I will forever be grateful to America for soo much. I lived here oofor many years illegally before becoming documented, and inspite of little set backs here and there I was able to put myself through school and landed on a good job. I acomplished soo much for myself, including helping my family in many ways which I’m sure could not have done had I been back in Dominica. To this person, I will simply say that I’m sorry and I understand. “one love”.

    June 9, 2012

    These comments are very interesting.

Just to give you guys some insight, as someone who’s seen both sides, it goes both ways. Each case is different.

My experience in getting a job after you’re done studying is mixed. I was able to get a job right after, however getting a work visa was a struggle. Now it’s another struggle to to get the job to sponsor a green card. By the grace of God, they’ve finally started the process, but that takes years. I’ve already been there for over 5 years and easily see myself here for another 5.

I’ve also had friends that got masters degrees up here and can’t find work here. Some even went back home with masters degrees and still can’t find work. Not sure how much has changed, since I left in 2003, but finding a job was very much about who you know. From what I’ve been told, it still is.

So the struggles of a student are great. Also, just because the article says student doesn’t mean they are actually pursuing an education. It just means that’s the last documented status they have for them.

With all that said, what I cannot condone is people who come here and purposefully try to cheat the system out of laziness. The student visa is sometimes used just to get into the country after that, the illegal behavior starts almost immediately.

Sometimes people find themselves in situations beyond their control, but other times it’s just out of wickedness. These people spoil the system for everyone and make things more difficult in the future.

At the end of the day, it’s hard everywhere. And without knowing he facts, you can’t really tell if they deserved it or not.

:-x Its interesting to me that with a southern border which is completely unenforced, the ICE people would go after a student. Sorry but this is no longer the land of the free, home of the brave.

Its sickening to me to know that deportation have increased under Obama – 10% more than Bush in 08. I mean really, what democratic policies have this guy enacted while in office? Vote for him because he black? yeah right! So guess what, come November MR takes office. So what! It gets worse..It did’nt get better under Obama! This guy seems to forget that more whites voted for Bush that him after an unpopular war.

Point number one: the area where that Dominican wa arrested is in politically contested area. These people are nothing but pawns for those in office to say hey see I catch illegals. Example if you go by any home depot anywhere in america or those gas stations you will find a jay illegal Mexicans waiting for people to come pick them up for jobs. The government know exactly where those undocumented illegals are yet they chose to ignore them and go after students. Why you ask? Well undocumented illegals. Are cheap labor something the American construction and agricultural industries need. They won’t go after those illegals but will go after students who they really don’t want to enter their job markets because of the cost of hiring a legal person . In an election year they need to show that they are getting illegals so instead for Barack to go after those Mexicans his administration going after those easily tracked. As for all those people talking about marriage. Lemme tell you if you not a shaving dominican woman with lots of money Dominican men with papers won’t even marry you and some want you to have lots of money too or come from a family of affluence. Those American men and women a self will make you their slave whilst working on your papers that they will string along. Sometimes they put you through all that and never get you any papers. The best thing is to realize our life is short and make the best life you can where ever you can legally. I rather get $400 a month than live amongst people who do not want me in their place.

      June 9, 2012

I respect the fact that this is your opinion; however, what is wrong is wrong. Dominica does not have the most difficult economic conditions etc. If one really wants to leave Dominica to live and work in the US there are legal ways to do so. This individual’s poor decision may influence others’ ability to get student visas. SMH

  12. Patriotic B
    June 8, 2012

Let’s be honest – everywhere is a struggle be it England, America, Dominica, Greece etc. If you go to any country on any type of visa and chooses to violate your status, then you have to be aware of the consequences if caught. In addition, a lot of Dominicans prior to 911 have gotten away with it and some are still illegal today. These are the same individuals who live large, at every carnival, party, driving with fake license or claiming to be citizens in order to work. Now there are others who are more careful and are really trying to make the best out of the situation and i respect them for that.

BUT at some point the system would catch up. So ONE Dominican being caught after all those who fell through the system should not be a cause to criticize any system. Instead we should reinforce those going up on visas especially student visas the consequences of violating the visa so at the end of the day they are aware and take responsibility and no blame anyone but themselves. F1 students are aware of the consequences having gone to the interview for the visa which they so carefully prepare for.

Lesson – Be aware of the consequences of your action.

Thanks for those words of wisdom, but sometimes people can forget that their VISA has expired and be so caught up studies, work and life that it moves down the list of priorities.

        June 11, 2012

I’m sorry, I don’t know if I can agree with your point that people can forget the expiration date of their Visa. Having been in the US for over 10 years now (thankfully I’m no longer on a visa), it’s pretty difficult to forget something like that. I can understand if you say dismiss, disregard, or even blatantly ignore, but forget…I think not.

This has been going on for a while. While it is true they may not get to everyone, they do get to some. I know of a student from Trinidad who was contacted right after he finished his studies. This is not about Obama or anyone else, this has been going on from the beginning of time. Some folks get lucky, others aren’t so lucky.

Really doesn’t matter. They are equally illegal. There’s no point in in highlighting as you are.

    • uscis
      June 8, 2012

The problem is they entered the US LEGALLY, so they have been processed by and officer at a Border and there is a record. Now that advancement in technology is allowing them to track illegal/out of status immigrants they need to be cautious.

On the other hand while the Mexicans are illegal they are undocumented so it is harder to track them. So based on the laws entering the country legally and violating ones status that be a bigger problem than one who enters illegally. The latter is a separate story which I will not get into since it is not the focus of the article.

What i understood from my brother-in-law who works for the department of homeland security is that US immigration teams are working on a ‘sell-out’ basis.

If they catch you, upon interrogation , they will ask you to sell-out 5 or more persons from your country of origin that may also have an illegal status in the country. The more people you effectively pin-point, the more likely (they claim)will be the probability of giving you an ease-up on your personal status.

They’re using Dominicans to sniff out Dominicans to save their own skin.

What an unfortunate situation for this individual. Caution to all other Dominican students in the US, when you have completed your degree, come back home instead of staying in those people country illegally. When we all start learning to live within our means then we will be able to pay our bills. Everywhere you go have bills that must be paid. Its not better in the states. There are even more bills. And even though the money comes in on a weekly basis or whatever, some people still have a hard time getting by. All because they live above their means. If your pay cheque cant pay your bills then there is need for re-evaluation.

We are so caught up in giving impressions, that we get entangled in competitions of who have what and who have more. and at the end of the day we are struggling. Just to show off.. My friend has a 42″ flat screen, i gotta have that. he has a car, u crazy??? i gotta have one too.. Mr and I went to study together, and he have ride and i dont have.. they dont think about the loan payments that they will be crying over after, saying things hard they have loan to pay, nooooo.. just for show.. I’m all for getting married to remain in the US but not every body is that lucky. Is it worth being stuck in another man’s country and always having to look over your shoulders, worried that US immigration services will eventually catch up to you? I know of several Dominicans up here in the US who are in this position; scrunting to find work and be paid under the table; not forgetting most of them are bawling to come home to visit their families.

  21. Orignal Eagle-Eye
    June 8, 2012

Truly sad!! Obama will do anything to win an election. America was good enough for his aunt who used to visit him all the time in Chicago, he damn well knew she was undocumented and enjoyed free US taxpayers money, healthcare, free housing and foodstamps in Boston. When he was exposed he shunned her, as soon as he was sworn in he instructed the same ICE to give her US CITIZENSHIP though she was marked for deportation! It’s easy to say people should go back home, but life is about taking risk, as long as they are not into illicit activities. You can’t criticize a man unless you walk a mile in his shoes. For the person advocating fraudulent marriage isn’t that an even worst crime you are publicly promoting? This man is on a rampage against muslims to prove he is not, even though the entire world knows he was raised muslim, he is on a deportation rampage because he wants to pretend he is tough on immigration, anything to prove he is truly american! The election will be in November and Caribbean nationals who are citizens will teach him a lesson.

Most of your rejoicing and chastising the people, just so you know, your family members in the US, Canada etc today, are there because they took the same risks or they are standing on the misery and risk of others who had to endure the same to now give them those rights.Think about it!

@ Original.. just ignore. Dominicans love to get emotional for everything and attack people. Where does PM Skerrit factor in the conversation?

People have to respect laws wherever they go, but many of the people commenting here are in Dominica and have no clue that American politics is different from the bachannal we have in Dominica. The eonomy is in shambles and it is a fact he has authorised more deportations even of green card holders than any other sitting US prez. I was mad at Cornell West when he called him out on drifting from his proposed policies, but more and more people are speaking out on many issues especially with this Gay thing hoping for votes. Obama to me is lost and while I won’t vote Republicans I just don’t have it in me personally to vote for him.

Folks a debate is about every body expressing their views, you may not like it, or agree but you have to respect it. Honestly the president is not looking good in the image of the majority of blacks and young professionals. Try town hall meetings, read Black enterprise, ask teachers and firefighters who are being laid off, talk to the hospital staff who have to turn patients away and talk to the Latinos who feel he used them.

    • June 8, 2012

This have nothing to do with Obama and re-election, you come to a foreign country you need to abide by the law of that country period, some talking about Haitians and others in DA and here we are with our people doing the same

When i left DA, I received a three month visitors visa, i made it a point of duty to renew that visa, which i did twice, because my documents for residency were being process which i received within eight months

The students need to be educated on their rights as international students, they should know what they can and cannot do while studying outside of DA, also if while studying they decide to discontinue their studies and overstay in the countries where they are studying they need to know that they are on their own

When you look at the nationalities of those caught, you will find that most of them came from countries that had a major part to play in 911 and after 911. Example, Yemen =1, Saudi arabia=1, Kenya (country of the shoe bomber)=15, Nigeria =4, just to name a few. Should the Us ignore the current threat and allow anyone in whether they know their status and motives or not?
Futhermore, Dominica is nolonger the friendly country we use to be before 2004. Now a days everybody has our passport and on top of that, our leader has been a friend of enemies of the US, so we might be on the watch list as well.
These arrests were made by Counterterrorism and Criminal Exploitation Unit, as part of a national program designed to prevent terrorists and other criminals from exploiting the nations immigration system.
Had our leader been a friend of the USA, as our previous administrations, he would be able to plead on behalf of our countryman, and no doubt, once he was screened and passed his terrosism background test, he would be given a second chance; but with our leader being a friend of our foes and has made unfriendly statements many times against the US, unfortunately, our people will pay for that when caught. So don’t blame it on Obama and the US.

But listen guys I dont know this person’s situation but imma tell yall some of em are asking for it. in fact i’ve been talking about this thing for a very long time now….these Dominicans come to school overstay and instead of trying find someone to marry em, they seat and relax, work under the table. As long as they’re getting money and living comfortable they are okay….its a typical dominican attitude, seek nothing beyond their comfort zone.

I know of ALOT people who are in the states for over 10 years now on a visa and not a darn thing else. They are living “large” so they dont care. Oh boy and them Illegal and still want to be doing all kinda ….driving without license and so on. So I really dont feel sorry for “some” of them they deserve to be deported!!!! cuz of their stupidity. The mexicans/trini/lucians come states and in a year them have green card. seen it countless times! Dominicans alone that have to seat and waste time…

    • June 8, 2012

You are soname pathetic and ignorant. It is stated that the person is a student. I also know”illegal Dominicans” who have degrees and legal ones who would not seek an education. So stop generalising.

      • True Talk
        June 8, 2012

oh shut up….you dont even realize that you’re proving my point. They have degrees but yet still illegal, so the degree is basically useless…they got “papers” and have does not seek to further their education…what does that say to you?

I am generalizing because its what a majority of what you people do….

It gets me so sick I does feel to call I.C.E on em but am not that low….

See you the UK wanted to put visa restrictions on Dominicans just recently…..dont that tell you something. Soon is like Jamaicans they gone have us

Not all people take marriage as a joke. Find someone to marry as if is a dasheen they purchasing in the roseau market? It is rather unfortunate that this happened. To each his own but I’d rather go back to my country and make the best of what I have than to be illegal and misserable in another man’s country.

I know of a woman who did it and now am pretty sure her paychecks bigger than the PM of Dominica and she only started of as a cashier at a local gift shop. She got an education, and helped herself in life. when people choose to seat at Kmart cashing for the rest of their lives you dont expect for them to be miserable

Its rather an unfortunate situation for this student but at the end of the day its noone’s fault but his/hers. Majority of these students went up to the states with their mind set on not returning. And i agree with robin. We cry on how hard it is in Dca but trust me, the grass is not always greener on the other side. It is hard EVERYWHERE.. so instead of remaining in the US as an illegal alien, not being able to get a good job cause you dont have the proper documentation anyway. Just to say you are in the US?? See where it got that person. Deporteeeee    :-D Pa choway mwen..

This is just sad yet I know what it is to REGRET coming back home. I obtained my degree in 2010 and decided to move back home. Since at the time finding a job in the US was impossible.MY bills started piling up.I had no money, no family, and no home. I stayd with a friend rent free, thank God, for several months. Finally I told myself it was just not worth it I came back to Dominica in 2011-Feb. We are currently in june of 2012 and can you believe I have not had a single job interview?? I’ve sent hundreds of applications,I’ve followed up.Nothing.I have a student loan at the AID Bank and at a point could not pay back not because I did not want to but because I COULD NOT…out of desperation I got into contact with someone who had a friend at an establishment who GAVE me something to do. I don’t want to seem ungrateful but its a real job that I have to work 6 days at. And sometimes ove 12 hrs per day for nothing. Yet its a job for now. However, there is no scope of advancement at that institution and also no job security .I feel so frustrated its not even funny. A lot of times I ask myself why did I even bother because I was in a better position before I left than now. I feel trapped. I am frustrated and don’t sleep at night. I only worry. So to that individual in the US. I understand because if u don’t have a pull string in da and a good one. You are better off staying in America and at least trying because really and truely Dominica is not for young people without a surname. IF you study overseas try to stay because its not easy. I can tell you first hand its not. IF you are reading this and can help in anyway pLease I Beg of you. Help me because I want to do better. I just can’t help myself.

Wish I had your contact to really help, your story is so moving. However you did not say what you studied. A key to success sometimes is choosing the right field to invest time and money in. Depending on the choice you made, you can become selfemployed, instead of waiting for employment. Is this an option that is possible for you?

      June 8, 2012

You did not specify what your qualification are. what type of job you are looking for? How can we help, if help there is. How can someone want to help if these are your thoughts? Remember the name people are those who have businesses so automatically they will have a job for their peers so change around your way of thinking publicly. Why don’t you try to create your own? certain fields have opening: agriculture, tourism, hand craft, sewing, hospitality, just to name a few. Yes these fields are hard working and it takes courage but they can sustain you. as a young person( I suppose) innovate.

I listen to a family member of mine who persuaded me to come back to Dominica. I did….I Should have NEVER done that. I understand your plight……DA is not for ambitious young well-educated people……Luckily I live in the US, have a Green Card and will become a US Citizen in a few months……I have been to DA once since I moved up here and nothing has changed……I love my country but the country don’t love me back…….I been here 5 yrs….I have been able to buy property, put myself through school things I would not have accomplished had I remained in DA…..Although u need to take chances in life to get ahead, those who planning on overstaying please try to get your status regulated…..there is always a way…..don’t stay in the US messing around….America is not yrs…..on my Green Card and on the US passport when u get one they always remind u where u come from……so even if u have legal status u still a Dominican….those who don’t have legal status and playing American and forming the fool in the country, send them back…..they making things difficult for those who want to be legit……

Dominica is not the only place that you can work. Have you tried other Caribbean islands? SOmetimes you have to look outside the norm. The days of sending out applications are gone. Take a walk to the establishment and present yourself. Search regionally. Network, network, network.

I studied in the US as well and as soon as my OPT was up I was right here back in DA. I stayed home for about 4 months and have been employed ever since.

I hope something works out for you. Also remember to pray.

Sasha, stop worrying, in life a degree on it own may not land you on a position that you believe you deserve.. If you was in the USA legally or otherwise you would definitely accept working as a gas attendant, or a Toll Gate Attendant or anything less than an Accountant position just to make ends meet, The USA has the most ‘UNDER EMPLOYED’ persons in the world and that is a fact.

It is such a norm that persons just accepts it without complaining, so you step in a bar and the bar tender tells you the have their degree in accounts and you say wow and that’s where you are, the response is well it pays the bills..

Trust me friend you are better off here, gain your experience where u are now and keep applying some day something will workout, try doing some private work as well that will boost your CV and experience.

Trust me i am a returnee and can tell you been there done that…

I agree with you alot. Down here we consider many jobs below our standards but we willingly do the same jobs in America and are ok with it; just to say we are working. As far as I am concerned, as long as it is legal and not demeaning, you can do it in the US, you can do it here to. If you are the garbage collector, be the best garbage collector you can be.

Sasha – this is a very unfortunate situation. The fact that you wrote this on DNO is a clear sign of your fraustration. I know what you want is a job and not advice, but since I don’t have a job to offer (and if I did, after reading your comment I would give it to you)I’ll give you my 2 cents: Don’t limit yourself and don’t be afraid to take risks. If your degree allows you to work independently, then work for yourself. If that is not your cup of tea then look beyond DA. You have a degree … the mere fact that you took off and went to the US to get your degree shows some form of motivation. Getting a degree wasn’t the end of the game plan! Check out Caribbean job sites – you never know. Please don’t just feel sorry for yourself. Realize that sometimes you have to get up and go … and that may be away from home.

      June 8, 2012

Sasha I feel your pain, try to get out of DA, I think this is the best option for you. You will find a job in DA that will hardly pay your bills far less to help you advance yourself in anyway. Dominica is bad news, if you’re not willing to spread your legs or play politics, or cover up their dirty deals, then forget it.

It appears to be quite a difficult decision to come back home after studying. WHile it is true one has to pay back loans and all that, it is impossible to find a job in Dominica to pay back the loan. The people who are in charge of hiring new people fail to do so just because they do not want to have any freshly trained/educated person in there to threaten them. There are countless people on Island who have studied abroad and can’t get a job in Dominica. They are rejected and in some cases despised. WHy, because they have a degree.
So do not bash the people who prefers to risk staying in America. Dominica needs to check its system and the way in which it treats the students who return home. It’s not nice.

Try online for the green card lottery. 2 co-workers from Kenya got lucky. They both had Bachelors already, but one told me that when she was told she had won, she thought it was one of those scams and asked me what to do. I told her to check with the embassy. It was good. So I think you should try that.

Your friend did something wrong because you are also entitled to one year optional practical training in the US. That’s why they give you an addditional year on your student visa. Maybe your friend took too long to complete her degree that’s why her student visa expired.

      • hmmm
        June 8, 2012

When you enter the United States on a student visa, you will usually be admitted for the duration of your student status. That means you may stay as long as you are a full time student, even if the F-1 visa in your passport expires while you are in the United States.

      • Teresa
        June 8, 2012

Yes, I wondered why he/she didn’t just apply for renewal, or if the course was completed, try for the OPT (internship). Duration of status means just that. The student must maintain the status for which the visa was issued, so if you are no longer a student you have to apply for change of status if you want to continue being legal in the country. That person should have done that. No guarantee he/she would have gotten it, but at least it shows intent at legal residence.
