Dominica’s indigenous people are urging the rest of the country to join them in celebrating World Indigenous Day 2012.
The August 9 event will be the 18th such commemoration of the day by the international community.
Carib Councillor Prosper Paris says the Kalinago community plans to hold a panel discussion when the observance of the day comes up in one month’s time.
“On the ninth of August we will be calling on you to observe world Indigenous day from the 09-12. We will be organizing a panel discussion dubbed “Kalinago’s got talent”. In addition a talent show will be held to showcase the skills of the Kalinago people,” Paris said.
Other planned activities will include Kalinago living outside of the territory being invited to the territory on August 12 ”to witness the recent transformational developments within the Kalinago Territory”.
“On the 12th of August we would like to invite those of you who are away from the territory to see what we have done, how we are developing and to share a day with you on that day,” Paris said.
International Day of the World’s Indigenous People is celebrated on 9 August every year to recognise the value and diversity of the cultures of indigenous people.
This is good! Always happy to hear good news about the Kalinagos.. Hope Kalinago day won’t turn too political and that it will be a good day for every one whether you are Kalinago or not..
Everything thats being done now is purely a charade! Its fake, nothing genuine nor sincere. Nothing worth my time. Kalinago week is entirely a waste of time.
The people who live there are not even conscious of their heritage. A few selfish few who parade the streets as “Proud Kalinagos” only do this for their own greedy and selfish motives while the masses remain in gutter poverty!
Yes God…
Mixed Caribs can take part?
No mixed Kalinagos cannot are not allowed… Just kiding, don’t see why not, I think you should be able to participate too Batacarib.
The international community is observing world indigenous day, not indigenous talent day, while our culture depicts who we are, we should take note that we are celebrating world indigenous day, so the emphasis must be showcasing the indigenousness of the people
From a local stand point we seem to be loosing that indigenous flavour and is even afraid to be identified as such, just look at the present chief, i am amaised that propper paris is now inviting those of us out there to come and see transformation, gush man, i want to see that transformation.
I Know since chief Williams left office the place is flooded with blacks perhaps that is what Paris is alluding to.
Proud that this is happen, we should be proud of our native people
