The Dominica Public Service Union (DPSU) the representative body of teachers at the government-owned Dominica Grammar School (DGS), is calling for swift action to deal with a matter where a student is alleged to have used a stick and struck a male teacher on his head.
Fari Winston, a teacher at the DGS for over five years told Dominica News Online (DNO) that on Tuesday (February 14), he tried to apprehend a student who reacted violently towards him.
“He grabbed my collar and when I released him, he went for a piece of wood with a nail in it when he came back he struck me with it on my head.” Winston recounted.
He told DNO that he feels “very hurt” about the incident and does not have words to describe the episode.
“This is the worst that I have seen and trust me I have seen a lot from all the schools, I am concerned about the state of security at the school for teachers,” he stated.
Winston received seven stitches to his head and recalled that he was also bleeding through his nose and was forced to return to the hospital for further medical attention and was asked to take a CT scan for which he has no money.
“The situation is grave…..I was asked to take a CT scan after bleeding today through my nose and experiencing dizziness at school, the scan cost EC$500.00 and I have no money and no one at the hospital is prepared to assist saying it must be paid before the scan is done,” he said with a sigh.
Meanwhile DPSU General Secretary Thomas Letang has advised the teachers to sit in the staff room and demand a meeting with education officials.
“I have advised them that they need to inform the principal that they need to meet education officials to discuss the matter and that tomorrow morning (February 16, 2012) when they come to work; they do not enter the classroom,” the trade union leader said.
“I have advised them to go to the staffroom and unless that requested meeting is held, they should not go to their classroom. I want the teachers to be on safe ground in their actions,” Letang said.
He said that from what he was learning, students are behaving in an unruly manner daily at the DGS, and security persons are complaining that it is difficult for them and kids are getting out of hand and threatening teachers.
“When parents are called the support is not always forthcoming. The situation is serious and grave, teachers are uncomfortable and the ministry needs to seriously intervene now before it further escalates,” the DPSC General Secretary stated.
Letang told DNO that it was too early to speak of industrial action.
However he urged the Ministry of Education “to let common sense prevail” and see that the teachers are allowed to function under more secure conditions.
“Teachers say they are frightened and I am hoping that the PTA, Teachers, Police and all stake holders will come (together) and deal with the matter because it is definitely getting out of hand. Teachers are being threatened daily and are afraid and say they just can’t function in that environment,” Letang said.
This is a direct result of universal secondary education. I am deeply saddened that the school i attended is in such a state. The D.G.S of old had “cildren”who were comitted to learing cuz they began preparing for high school before at common entrance level. Now prepared or not they get into Grammar school what do we expect. in times of Mr. Felix Wilson that could of never never never happen. Over the years education officals have changed the system so much, moving it closer to that of the U.S and away from the britisg standard. The irony of this is the universites in the states Eg CUNNY SUNNY and MSU offer us here scholarships because our educational system was of a higher standard than theirs. Bring us back to the saying too many cooks spoil the bouyon. We are presantly reaping the seeds of a system sabatoged by these so called educational officals who are more intreasted in politics than the development of generation coming. Compare the government schools and the private see the difference.
Tomorrow the Minister of Ed and his minions will come out and sing the praises of Universal Secondary Education, where students that don’t even know their Abc’s are sitting in a High School class room depriving others from a first class education.
What is happening at DGS? We all know… the U.S.E. is failing our children… There is a system in place at DGS to corral troublemakers and slow learners into special , remedial “T” classrooms; the “T” refers to technical but how many technical subjects or training are being delivered to these students who basically choose to spend their days disrupting or even avoiding their classes? These students are frustrated not because they cannot learn but because they are not what you would call “academically strong”, the education system in Dominica lacks the support to sustain USE… but as long as certain people choose to ignore that fact students will continue to fail and the situation at DGS which is repeated at a lot of the other High Schools in Dominica will soon become the norm… we’ll be mimicking the US school with metal scanners and full time security force.
To those naysayers that continue to promote USE … take a look around you. How many students who have entered High School through USE make it beyond 1st , 2nd or 3rd form or without repeating at least 2 times or even more? What is the success rate? It’s not the students who achieve 7,8 or 9 ones at CXC who can be the model for the USE because Dominican students have traditionally done well at external examinations… going back to the years before USE there was always an Island Scholar with students achieving high grades … It’s not the top 10 that supports a system like that … because schools will not allow student to sit CXC subjects that they do not exhibit an aptitude for so the results are flawed … There are 5th formers who will not sit any CXC subjects or maybe just 1 or 2 to save their parents the cost.
Not to worry though every child will get to sit down in a high school classroom whether they learn or do not learn… I dare ask – who cares?
I do and no I’m not a teacher but my sister is and in the past I have tutored young students and I have friends who teach. More importantly I have watched my brother, who was among the first year to be granted USE struggle to make it through High School where he is currently in his final and 7th year. Someone might argue that maybe he is stupid but I know that his frustration at school (DGS) ended at 3rd from (after repeating his first 2 years) when he was introduced to Agriculture and Woodwork; along with Math these are the 3 subjects in which he continuously achieves A & B+ marks.
The provision of technical subjects and life skills training modules as conducted by the Youth Development Division would serve well to be introduced to the High Schools from the first year to encourage students to identify their talents at the earliest… and hopefully lead to the production of more balanced and better behaved students … reducing their frustration and curbing youth violence!
Why have not the child told his side of the story??
There are three sides…. the teacher’s side, the student side and the truth!
I am not condoning what the child did, but these days we can’t tell teacher from student in the classroom except by the clothes that they wear.
On the street these teachers, drink , smoke and socialize with the same children.
A boundary was crossed sometime before and some teachers allow their students to disrespect them.
I feel your pain broth,he should expelled from school
There are so many things which are wrong with this incident that occurred at the D.GS. First of all, I would like to categorically say that our people are some of the most foolish, egoistic, sententious and haughty people that occupy the face of this earth.Ninety percent of them are affirmed jack-assess. Included are all those who profess to have academic accomplishments. They are worst than those who do not have an education because they believe that they are better than those who do not have one, but in reality, their lack of exposure to the international life have made them inexperience to life and how things are done. Shame on the Government, shame on the medical personnel. Our people are uncaring, unloving, unkind, stupid, hypocritical, bias, have no goodness in their hearts, do not believe in equality and justice. We claim to be godly, but we hate people, believe in judging, tremendously envious, ignorant and arrogant. If you would rather have one of your people die because of $500 dollars, it tells me the level of malice and callousness.
It does not matter who you are in America, if something like that happen, all your family has to do is signed a consent letter and you are under the scan within an hour. This union should be banned, and a new one should be implemented in it’s place.
The principal should be fired for incompetence. The student should be charged for assault, and expelled and a zero tolerance policy must be implemented in place to ensure that this never happens again. How do we expect to prosper and produce productive citizens when we tell people it is good to hate gay people, it is alright for a husband to beat and disrespect his wife. That it’s alright for a man to be committing adultery, it is alright for incest to go unpunished, it is alright for men to abuse their children both sexually and physically. It is alright for you to get a job not because you are more qualified than your competitor, but you are getting it because someone favor you due to friendship or name. It is alright to drink alcohol and chop people up with cutlasses. It is alright to hate our brothers and sisters who go overseas to learn a different way of living. All those things, plus our leaders being thieves are why those things are happening in lovely Dominica. The land is good, but the people are not. We need to sent them all to the States for two years then ask them to return. I guarantee you that they will begin to think differently.
i would let the child parents pay for it.

boi look trouble so sad for d man but all i could doe is just laugh lol
PARENTS, PARENTS, PARENTS, RAISE ALL U CHILDREN WITH RESPECT.. LET THEM KNOW THEY HAVE TO RESPECT THEIR TEACHERS AND PERSONS WHO ARE OLDER THEM THEM.. OMG..I CANT BELIEVE A CHILD WOULD FIGHT WITH TEACHER.. WHY DONT WE SING WITH DICE AND SING THE TEACHER SONG.. I WOULD GIVE THAT CHILD ONE BEATING EH. HE WOULD REGRET HE EVEN THINK OF TOUCHING A TEACHER AGAIN..
im a student of dgs and i can tell you the teacher and most of the students are great but the rest are just defined as terrorists i have to do exams this year and the last thing i want to do is fail because of them ppl that want to come and say about they felling insecure!!!!! >>dgs needs better security service our security guards are very lazy and the teachers are losing their grip on THEIR ATHORITY i watch teachers take threats and argue with student every day and do nothing about so if they cant do anything where do i stand i love dgs but some of the children are just too life threating ps. my heart goes out to sir winston he is a great teacher
Yes we Care PM what you doing about your alma mater
Anyone with a conscience will be disgusted and upset, that the hospital authorities din’t see it fit to find whatever way possible to give the injured man a scan.
How many public servants go to work with $500.00, or even have $500.00 cash at home?
THIS IS BORDERING ON CRUELTY…
FARI YOU ARE IN MY THOUGHTS AND PRAYERS I HOPE THAT THIS STUDENT IS DEALT WITH ACCORDINGLY FOR HIS ACTIONS HE WILL PAY FOR IT SOONER OR LATER AND I WOULD PREFER SOONER BUT WE CAN’T RUSH GOD THE EDUCATION DEPT. NEED TO ENSURE THAT MEASURES ARE PUT IN PLACE TO KEEP TEACHERS AND OTHER PUBLIC SERVANTS SAFE SINCE THEY ARE PROVIDING MUCH NEEDED SERVICES TO THE ISLAND AND PEOPLE OF THE COMMONWEALTH OF DOMINICA……….FARI LOVE YOU TO THE MAX BRO GET WELL SOON AND KEEP UP THE GOOD WORK I AM REALLY SORRY THAT THIS HAD TO HAPPEN TO YOU WHO IS A BRIGHT YOUNG MAN LOOKING OUT FOR THE YOUTH OF THE COUNTRY……
WHAT IS THE CHIEF EDUCATION OFFICER DOING.. WRITING ANOTHER PLAY FOR SUMMER WHILE THERE IS A BREAKDOWN IN THE SCHOOL SYSTEM… WHEN WAS HIS LAST VISIT TO THAT SCHOOL AND MORE SO, SCHOOLS AROUND THE COUNTRY…
GET OFF YOUR AND DO YOUR WOK CHIEF
thats the 3rd teacher to be in some issue like this at the DGS stupes ministry are u as bad as our justice system? expell the boy, let him take jail for his action……stupes ministry just waiting for someone at the DGS and any other school to die for them to really intervene
The principals may play a part in the social structure of the schools, but let’s not make them entirely culpable. I was at DGS when Mrs. Jeanjacques and Mr. Wilson reigned and the school was still at the top. The issues came when we reformed the Education System on the island. People think JSP was a bad idea; it wasn’t! It worked! Students who were not academically proficient, got the opportunity to hone their academic and life skills and were made ready for high school level. Today, we have all types of students packed into the same classroom. Some are being stifled because their academic levels are much higher, other students are being left behind and then they act out. We need to revamp our education system, and if protesting, which is our democratic right, is the best option to having our voices heard, then let’s do that. Students who are protesting for better treatment of their teachers, and for improved academic expectations should be listened too. They are the future. Let’s get serious fellow Dominicans about our future
God Bless!
I cannot believe that there are some Dominicans making excuses for this kind of behavior .
Wicked, lazy, self absorbed, irresponsible parents are the cause. I’m 25 and to this day I can’t even think of the idea of giving “back chat” to my mother or any adult… I was raised to respect authority and my elders and that things can be handled without violence…
Stop blaming everybody for what’s going on … it’s all a result of terrible parenting!
“Workmens’ compensation.” He shouldn’t have to pay for injuries he sustained on the job. In my view these expenses should be covered by the Ministry of Education.
bad they bad put them in rest for a very long time.
AMAZING how we blaming the youth like they just suddenly get this attitude on their own. Something must be WRONG in our society when a thing like this can happen. We need to find out what it is instead of talking about some abstract group called “the youth”. They are children— OUR children. So something must be wrong somewhere in our homes or our churches or our schools.Something must be wrong.
“He grabbed my collar and when I released him,???” does that make sense to anyone??
I was wondering the same thing
“he tried to apprehend a student who reacted violently towards him.”… he was probably holding the student so the student grabbed his colar and so the teacher released him… lol
boy no law cant no constitution cant stop dem students from attacking dem teachers..so behave allu self dummyin d cans…that d precedent so live them students alone
Why would it not make sense? The phrase “released him”, simply implies that the teacher did not want to react in a way that would further infuriate the student!
YES, IT DOES MAKE SENSE, READ THE STORY SLOWLY!
Something doesn’t add up. According to my math teacher in those day at DGS (Mr. Bannis) Not enough effort try again.
Let the school or the Government cover the charges for the scan…that is total madness; you were on the JOB. If the government does not want to cover it then his parents….take them to court……
AMEN AMEN AMEN
… socialism smh
they will not because last year a student hit a teacher in his eyes blood i tell you and the gov never paid for doctor the teacher stayed home for 3 weeks, we need justice in this land.
The education system is not the best since 1997. At the same time under any system rules and discipline in staff and students start with the leadership. In saying that I stand by my words saying that Alicia Jean Jacques has never been the right fit for DGS.
Mr. Winston i wish you the best in you recovery and in obtaining compensation.
Imagine even today children have guts to be hitting teachers with water balloons.. uh???this country is really upside down..we need to be more secured in schools..our teachers and children who wants to learn are in jeorpady..do something the law must make example of such actions at the schools..i understood that the at PSS an example was made with this child..he was charged..sorry for the parent..but something has to b done..if the children know that they will pay for their actions they will think twice.
What about the principal of the school? If the principal is not strict on the children from the time they enter the school yard, what is going on right now is exactly what you get. Simeon Joseph was the best principal for grammar School, and the parents and some of the teachers found that he was too strict so he was transferred. You could ever see this happening under the watch of Celia Nicholas (DCHS) or Andra Christain (SMSS)? NEVER!!!
UH UH…simeon couldn’t control to the full extent even in his time..an i was a teacher @ dat time under simeon…felix wilson was the best principal grammar school ever had..ther was discipline n students couldn’t do what they wanted..
Simeon couldnt control to the full extent…you may be right…but things wasnt so bad
its not the matter of which principal is best…..the students are different from when u taught there and from when i taught there…..in the course of 8 years, 3 principals and thousands of different personalities have been through the school…..it cannot be how it use to be…..come on
MORAL DECADENCE IN THIS LAND
As a former school teacher in DA I find this behaviour to be very appalling. What next? I hope this is handled properly so that we do not have a repeat of this type of assault against teachers.
honestly i think the Principal they have there just too damn soft..that is not the right job for her i mean i went to the school wen mr. joseph was there and wen she came and from her arrival i could see the very foundation begin to crumble
within the space of 3 years, that is the second time a teacher has been attacked to such intensity. ministry say the teachers are not allowed to lay a hand on any child. A security personel was injured and by a student and he was told that he is not allowed to lay hands on the students also
Again Dominica Education system need to check the need of its population. Time and time again they refuse to hire professionals because they claim they do not have money to pay them. So this is the result of that myth. Many persons are misplaced in positions because the administrators fail to see the need of the schools. I have some friends who return to Dominica as professionals in the education field but were rejected by administrators because they do not necessarily wants professionals who may pose a threat to them. which is crazy, the focus should be on the students and not on administrators and their titles.
There needs to be a shaking up in that education monopoly in Dominica. The same people making decisions for donkey years with no results. What is it that Dominica really wants for its children? Are Dominicans satisfied knowing that persons who has the power to change the system is deliberately not doing so? How much money does it take to hire a few professionals to be placed in troubled schools? It is about time that each High School has a behavior specialist and/or psychologist. It is time, the time is now.
That’s the result of the modern education system that we have invested in. What crap!!! Only in Dominica. I want to hear DAT and PSU talk their crap now.
Thank God I left that system years ago. No respect from students, parents and the so called authorities!!!
What does the Child and his parents have to say.
What am I hearing? So if someone comes to the hospital dying but with no money they gonna leave them die? hmph. Something should be done to that student and about that school. They are always so unruly in the streets with their uniform. What is going on. We need to pray people, not only for the school but for our leadership and country as a whole
i glad for u >>welcome to the PMH where even accident victims families are asked to pay first for scans
Hospital does do things backwards, they more concern about money rather than people health.
rather an people life…
Wait, wait, the teachers in Dominica don’t have medical insurance????? What the hell!! mondieu ouy. Do you have a teachers’ union? this is baffling.
my dear unions in d/ca is just to tell prople protest for more money, and thats about it. Nothing else. Protest. Protest. Protest.
Sweetie is not just teachers only. civil servants generally dont have any kind of medical insurance. people who are fortunate to get those are workers who work for private places like the banks, ross university etc etc.
This is a very sad situation. it’s just sad now that the good pupils will have to pay for the bad eggs. Do we have a juvenile center in Dca? I think that will make a huge change, we need to find a way to segregate the bad eggs from the future hopefuls. At the same time presenting the opportunity for both groups to develop into civil members of society. The g/ment needs to condemn such an act, i think as teachers we need to show them how significant our role is to a country’s d/ment. Shut down, lock down, I guess that will the attention of those incharge. What does the loud mouth minister of Edu. have to say about that. We talk to much in this country, what we need is action.
Even if Farai roughed you up that’s no reason to retaliate in such a manner. Everyone knows the feeling “someone hits you or embarrasses you, you want to keep your dignity or not lose face so you fight back”. But understand this Parents, Teachers, Elders are OFF LIMITS all need to be shown respect at all times, yes they can be wrong but thats not for you to resolve, that’s how u grow up to be a man and thats how u will want to be treated when u become older. The people siding with the boy I assume are younger kids who will somehow identify with him, just think about this, if you are that disrespectful now, and are so more and more everyday, how bad do u think it will be when you become parents or get older? I believe kids are becoming mature at an earlier age so ponder on this, if you all don’t realize and put an end to this you will be the cause of your own demise.
Look at the Grammar School. A school that was once the envy of all other schools. Well, well, well, what has gone wrong? Whom should we blame? Where did everything go wrong? Somebody has to pay for the explosive climate, and poor school ethos that now exist at my alma matter. From what i read the problem with that unrully student is not the only one; there seems to be many more. Fix my school and fix it now!!
USE kill the school flat. Other government owned secondary schools are basically the same.
Bad management, bad students, rowdy school, unsuccessful school.
So what of bad parenting? I’ll be the first to say there are parents who try their utmost and children allow others to influence them. Still parents cannot abdicate their responsibility and expect the school to correct it. I hearover and over that “it takes a community to raise a child” but my observation show that it is “parents” and not the children who wants noone to correct their children. In many of these instances I believe we are reaping what we have shown, the problem stems from home.
Grammar School is a large school with a lot of chaos. From accounts, one can conclude that the principal’s weak and poor managerial skills are the causes of all the pandemonium. Sorry sir, for your trouble. i hope you feel better soonest.
The child is down right disrespectful to lay hand on the teacher. No excuses should be made for him. but while we are there analysing the situation don’t you think it would be best to carry out a scientific and strategic survey on all stakeholders to note their shortcomings and strengths? We should start with the principal of the school.
Investigate those in authority. I am appalled at the current conditions of the Grammar school. The principal is inefective. She does not know how to handle such a large school so becuase of her ineptitude, the school has lost its prestige and standards. the sutdents are running wild. I am sorry that the teacher was hurt, but where the head is weak the body has no direction.
I don’t think the principle should be held completely accountable. Jeanjacques was there in the 90s and early 2000s and the school was still on top. The school started falling apart when the Universal Secondary Education (admit all) program was enacted. Since DGS was a government school, it had to absorb all types of students. The school population went from 700 around 2002 to n1100 in 2010. So now you have more students of varied learning abilities packed into one class, and unfortunately, some students are left behind and may act out since no one’s paying attention to them. Let’s not also forget about the parents too. We don’t hold families to the same levels that we used to-parents need to find out what’s going on with their kids, hold children responsible to excelling and behaving properly; and discipline them before they develop bad ways. I remember a time when if a teacher beat a student for bad behavior, that child when he or she came home, would get a double portion of blows (I was one of those kids). Do that today, and parents want to beat up teachers without listening to what their child did. Because in their eyes, their child can do no wrong. We expect our teachers to be educators, parents and more. But when the teacher to student ratio is 1 to 30 students, how much can we expect them to do? They aren’t super human or gods. There are so many issues here for this failure that we need to take into consideration. Let’s not attribute blame to one person because she can’t do everything. I’m sure if she had a magic wand, she would wish all kids to be smart with good behavior. But that’s not how it works unfortunately. All we can do now is hope and pray that parents, students and our society as a whole realize what’s wrong before we fall into further disrepute.
The days of wilson was filled with discipline the school needs another wilson.I cant believe thats the DGS I attended.
You are so very correct. From the time Wilson left Grammar School went down the drain.
Me either I just can’t believe that’s the school I went to. Where are the days when we had healthy fear and respect for our parents and teachers? When I was growing up you were scared to report incidents of disrespect of your teacher to your parents cause you getting more licks at home and have go back to school and apologise..smh..that’s the type of society we building..
You guys are unaware of wilson.Tobias was the biggest trouble maker in all high schools combined in the 70’s.he faught every fellow student dring sports. He grew up got married abandoned Posse and maryy g/will bowfar and playig good guy after. Then he fell out of grace .Is he ill or something?
This is outrageous, and ridiculous! Hear a teacher I will assume was deliberiately injured on his job in a public institution, which is supposed to be a government owned secoundary School, he got his head bashed in, bleeding from his nose as a result of a blow inflected to his head while he is in the employment of the Government.
He is injured goes to the hospital, bleeding from his nose, informed by hospital authorities that a Cat Scan is need , however he must pay the five hunderd dollars prior to getting medical attention to what may obvious to a doctor, and not a quack, that such injury could well be life treatening!
What is wrong with Dominicans?
Are we so,stupied, so damn backward, and so politically bias that even doctors does not know when they are negleting their duties, and risking the life of people.
This man got injured on his job, regardless of the circumstance the government is responsible for the man medical care right now. What happens to Workers Compensation, Has the government no insurance coverage on the civil servant in our country?
What kind of crap is this?
You see we run off our mouth in the country, concentrating on who is the bigger thief, but the simple things which attention should be give to, such as holding government and private employers responsible for the health of the worker as in this case, I doubt there is any law covering such.
This should not be, if the man is bleeding from his nose, you can be sure his brain sustain a considerable amount of damage, how can any one demand money before treatment in a case like that?
This is baloney, it is a disgrace.
What is the purpose of people in the Diaspora donating to the hospital?
They do it so that the needs of the citizens of the country can be met, so why was this man deny the services of the CT?
He got hurt on his job, his employer the government, the ministry of Education should be held responsible for his injuries. If I was in his place, I would sue the government for damages!
Only in Dominica this crap can happen and no one is held accountable!
Winston alternative is to file a law suit against the ministry of Education, the Hospital, a personal Law suit against the treating doctor, if he was bleeding from his nose he should be admitted into the hospital, immediately and given the CT, before his head was sutured.
That is elementary in medicine , we are dealing with a bunch of quacks in Dominica calling themselves doctors. They can only work in Dominica, where anything goes, how many people in Dominica lost their lives all due to the incompetence of peopleplaying doctor.
I have a friend, who was a teacher in Dominica, she told me that one day while she was outside teaching her class, a cricket hard ball, like the ones used on First Class Cricket, and Test Cricket, came out of nowhere, struck her in her face, as a result of that this lady is in her fifty’s living in Canada, she eventually lost her vision in that eye, while it cost her former employer the government of Dominica not one single cent.
I know she is reading this, and if she wish she can give the details of her injury.
That is not the way it should be at all!
Too much advantage is taken of the poor in our country. If Winston who is a Secondary School teacher does not have five thundered dollars, he is not going to have five thousand dollars either.
So how much is his monthly salary: so you see why the politicians must steal in Dominica?
All of those so called lawyer’s in Dominica who like to take cases pro bono should think about this case, for even if there are no industrial, and worker compensation law’s in Dominica, this might be a case which could set a precedence in Dominica, and Dominica in particular, because I am aware that there are worker compensation law’s on the other islands of the Caribbean.
I was involved in a Worker Compensation case in Antigua.
I was punched in my face, by a coworker, I did not fight back, but by the time it was over, I had enough money to invest into a big, big business.
We need to change the way business are conducted in Dominica. Any doctor, or hospital administrator who would demand money from a patient bleeding from his nose after receiving a head injury, and letting him go untreated, is a damn fool, there is no excuse for that!
There are people who sometimes for one reason other bleed from their nose, it might be caused by broken blood vesicle, hypertension, or a borken nose, but in this case the qucks at the hospital should recognize that the bleeding was caused by the injury he sustained.

Not wishing bad for anyone, but one of these days somebody will die at the hands of these incompetent people at the PMH and then when they get a lawsuit they will understand to stop the discrimination with regards to people health. On the other hand, Mr. Winston if you can read this, you are sitting on a fortune. Somebody needs to be held responsible, and since they won’t want to hold the child responsible, then you have his parents, the principal, the MOE, and by and large the Govt of Dominica. Take your pick, you can choose one or all. Make them pay the hard way.
But wait you behind time , becuase i know it have people that die under does ppl hands at the PMH……..they call themselves Doctors but trust me its really frightening!!
i SAID THE SAME THING.the sickening thing is the scan the man was refused….It’s signs of a country in decay.
I totally agree with you thats utterly nonsense they want to Adapt the United Kingdom style Stating that you shouldnot A Child or your own Off Spring to correct them thats why so much is happening those days, But as I am always saying if i had any young child and he or she done something wrong there is nobody that will or can stop me from Hitting them because after i finish with them and social service intervine they going with the child as well.
To the Teacher, I hope you a speedy recovery! However, try to raise some money ie loan etc to get yourself proper medical attention. Then take legal action against the parents and the education establishment. No one should go to work and be attacked. To the boys parents, shame on you all! To the Ministry of Education, I can’t believe that no attempts has been made to support this teacher by way of payments for his medical expenses. There should have been some support mechanism already in place. We are no longer in the 1950s. Change with the times!
government shud pay for his medical bills ann make sure he well covered an the student shud be expel and jailed for long time and parent shud b charged
Where is Mr Wilson to give those boys two body-slam?
What a thing! Does that mean that we as teachers are not safe in schools anymore? Then if we get hurt and do not have the money, we cannot get treatment? This is absurd. DICE, sing your song for teachers. Be a voice for us. I feel your pain DGS teachers. What is happening at my former school?
Dominica Grammar School was known as a school that excel in sport, Academic and other activities. What happen to these kids today. The primary objective here should be about achiving an education and pursuing your goals in life, not about abusing and attacking your educators who are trying their uttermost best so that you all become sucessful young strong proud black educated men and young women in a todays society . I’m so disappointed as to what we have adapted from the outer world.Let’s take back our school and focus into making a better future for our nation.
For goodness sake! This is a High School! This is a preparation for either future studies in a College or University or for the work force. What is happening to the youth of today? This child is an evil child. Any child who could do this to a teacher of all or anyone for that matter must have an evil heart. He also needs the blessing and grace of God. He needs to be arrested and charged. Spare the rod, spoil the child.
When older adults of all hear of such a shocking happening, they cannot help but look back and say that times have indeed changed and in the schools. There was school discipline and the school children dare not misbehave. Worst yet, to hit and injure a teacher. Otherwise! You should know what I mean. This would never have occurred in my youth. Furthermore, teachers and parents cooperated then.
What is this am I reading? The teacher was not able to get a CT Scan because he did not have money and the hospital refused to be treated? Shame on the hospital authorities and also the government. This should never have happened. What if the teacher became worst and I hate to say what else? Who would be to blame for this?
DGS and government you need to take out insurance policies for your teachers or assist them and/or subsidize their insurance.
If teachers are wounded on school premises and by a student, you are required to pay for the treatment? You should have some funds allocated for this.
I do believe that the Prime Minister and/or Deputy should have been immediately notified when the teacher was refused treatment so that arrangement could have been made to have him treated.
TIME TO TAKE SERIOUS ACTION THAT ANOTHER ATTACK WILL NEVER RECUR. I have a message for the government AND ALSO FOR THE DGS HEADMASTER. DGS Headmaster, I hope you have some authority in disciplining those children and that they respect you as Head of the school. They should also respect all teachers with no exception. If they have failed in this respect, in no uncertain terms, they must be informed.
Prepare a directive about school discipline and disciplinary action. In simple words, what will occur to them should those school children breach it, either by expelling or suspending them. Read it out to the children and also arrange to give each of them a copy and to take home to their parents. Otherwise mail a copy to each parent. In addition, have a teacher, parent and pupil(s) meeting, be it collectively. This type of behaviour and in a High School for that matter must never recur.
The unruly children are putting DGS to shame. Consider how many DA nationals attended this high school, excelled, graduated and hold responsible positions and their rightful place in society and serve their country well including wherever they reside in the world. Surely, those children should know about it and emulate them for their future benefit.
FARI WINSTON, TEACHER AT DOMINICA GRAMMAR SCHOOL,WAS ATTACKED BY A STUDENT AND HAD TO SEEK MEDICAL ATTENTION AS A RESULT. DPSU IS CALLING FOR TEACHERS TO SIT IN THE STAFF ROOM UNITY THE MINISTRY COMES FOR A MEETING STAND IN SOLIDARITY TOMORROW FEBRUARY 16TH WITH ALL TEACHERS,PARENTS AND EDUCATION OFFICERS SEEKING REFORM BY SHOWING UP PEACEFULLY IN SUPPORT AT THE DOMINICA GRAMMAR SCHOOL TOMORROW MORNING. WE ARE ASKING ALL SUPPORTER ESPEIALLY TEACHERS ISLAND WIDE TO WEAR SOMETHING WHITE TO SHOW YOUR SOLIDARITY.SPREAD THE WORD.
THANK YOU
as a student of the Dominica grammar school, i would really love it if they would remove such unruly children from the school because it is seriously affecting the student who want to learn and make something of their-self
as a former student of the dgs i strongly believe that all the blame of the students behaviour should not be placed on the students. i think the leadership of the school she be taken into consideration. when the former principal mr. simeon was there did we ever hear of these outrageous daily bad behaviour of the students takin place???…. i dont think so….since the new head teacher has taken over the school the violence has increased, this is becuz she lacks the firm and strict manner that is needed…unlike the former principal…..although he wasnt the most liked among the students….one can honsetly say the school was controlled….the present head teacher is all lovely and friendly etc…she is a good head mistress but she need to step up her game……#speaking from first hand knowledge and experience
IF IT WAS ME …. I BURSTING HIS HEAD BACK SAME TIME .. I CANNOT HAVE TO TEACH YOU AND YOU HURTING ME …
if the Principal not gay they weak september all principals need to charge DOMINICA GRAMMAR SCHOOL,GOODWILL SECONDARY SCHOOL AND ISAIAH THOMAS SECONDARY SCHOOL
what is goin on?with sadness and great disappointment i write this!!grammar school is my alma mata . .my days at grammar school was something to be soo proud of.of the time before me and after.now here i am!this great intitution help shape the person i am.now we have these fools, low lives threatening its very fabric.i appreciate the support DPSU is giving and what it is trying to accomplish.my heart goes out to you, mr winston .please don’t give up.as for this youmg fool and others who care to follow stockfarm will never run out of room.he is finish!!!
a teacher be the name of craig went to ms henderson and the doctor and tell them that the school is not safe
the E.O OF SECONDARY SCHOOLS IS WEAK.stop go to the doctor and do your work.
the only person that can run grammer school is simeon joseph. but the government needs to step up and protect the teachers. i see no reason y this man had to pay for a ct scan, its beyond me. where ever you work safety and security should be a #1 priority. If the teachers dont feel safe imagine how the students feel…come on ministry, step up!!!
Is so dominica get dere nah? So if this student had a gun he would shoot d teacher den?? D government of dominica need to put in place a juvenile detention center for
delinquent adolescents and problem teens. Think outside d damn box for once and stop being so behind time in law making. Do thay so that when they start giving problems like this you can request to have them sent there. Even when they giving parents problems their parents can send dem dereto learn some morals and respect for adults. Think outside the box for once.
Why was the poor man asked to pay $500.00 nah man!
That’s madness man!
So if he dies as a result of his wound “NO ONE CARES’? O M G . POOR US!
I totally and categorically condemn this type of behaviour. Some teachers go to work and work very hard. I know it. Only to be clubbed by a thug?
my dear teacher find a good lawyer and sue the city of roseau, the govt of dominica, the pricipal of dgs, the parents and student. and becareful this blood through the nose is an indicator of internal hemoorrhage so be careful. this incident must not go smiling. this is foolishness in dominica.
Chant with me….BRING BACK SIMEON JOSEPH!
DGS is my Almamater and I am outraged by what I’m reading. Forget about the rights of the child and expel that student! I hope his parents are ouraged also.
Is it possible for this teacher to sue the government for having this brawler/fighter/attacker at school? I am no lawyer, i am just asking.
Someone attacks you while you teaching government children and you are asked to pay for a scan?
THAT’S CRUEL,unsympathetic, uncaring, wicked, mischievous, unconscionable, unfair, unjust, intolerable, brutish, unimaginable, bad. No wonder the good teachers are leaving in droves..
That’s not the way we demonstrate love to our own son of Waitikubuli. I FEEL YOUR PAIN BROTHER.
all u talking about the teacher but goodwill secondary school have a principal and all boys in the school afraid of because him of his bad wa……
i agree. if anyone is hurt while on the job, their employers should pay for their medical bills.
AND THE ONLY THING THE HOSPITAL HAS TO DO IS DEDUCT THE MONIES FROM HIS SALARY ON MONTHEND.SO WHAT THE HOSPITAL IS SAYING THAT IF U DOE HAVE MONEY ULL DIE?COME ON MONEY IS NOT WORTH MORE THAN A HUMAN LIFE.
Obersvant! Just wondering if it were a daily worker cutlassing the roads and he had an altercation with his boss or had it been a Clerk of one the Ministries who had an altercation with his/her boss at work, would the Government still be responsible for the bills?
Can you tell me what is the responsibility of the person who inflicted the wound or injury. The teacher should not be denied medical attention, but he has a right to seek compensation from the student and his parent/guardian for his injury.
Are you saying that, I as a tax payer should pay for the student and his disrupted behavior? Hell No. Let the teacher seek redress at the court should the student/parent/guardian fall to pay for the medical bills.
don’t they have insurance to cover such things…I cannot believe that a scan cost $500 EC.. my goodness
The adults ruining our country with their negativity…..if they can vandalized the lions on the bridge why cant the child hit the teacher with the wood? Its basically the same thing….lead by example people..the negative attitude is starting to rub off on us the youth…don’t blame us blame who raised us.
go hang yourself
No thanks..Maybe you should try it you’re pretty much useless lol…..thhats the negativity im talking about…if an adult came on the radio and said exactly wat i said it wud be ok
I am also blaming you 100% for supporting this vicious act. YOU SHOULD EVEN BE ARRESTED AND JAILED. !
But thats not going to happen now is it :-D….I can say what so ever i please same how allu can be on the radio and the internet talking nonsense and negativity.
you are really a dumb fool! look instead at the adults who encourage bad behaviour in their children instead
and those who encourage their peers when they know they do wrong. si i par ni sou ti weh i par ni voleur
kk
@The Youth: What is that brain fart?? Duhh
Lol idk wat the heck u talkin bout but nice one anyways
To The Youth I wonder if it were a child of urs or bro or sis, would you have said something different? You teach a child right n wrong the best way u can but it seems tht most of us youths are hell bent on defiance and making a fool of ourselves. I think that the boy deserves and immediate expulsion and the teacher should take further action and take tht child to court. Everybody should suffer the hardships of the path they choose to walk. You wanna be arrogant then suffer the consequence that comes to it you can’t chop down a tree wit one swing so I think the law should disregard the age of these youths and take proper action n start choping down that tree of delinquency
If he needs immediate expulsion what do the adults need? I wonder
are u a sheep? can you not see the difference between right and wrong and do the right?
look at it this way…adults can vandalize the lions on the bridge….therefore the child can hit the teacher … therefore someone can just shoot you while you walking right?
cause BASICALLY you stupid little kid! its the same thing
Yup!
same thing….potatoe potato lol
MY FRIEND U HAVE THE RITE TO DO GOOD OR BAD.I WOULD TAKE IT U KNOW RITE FROM WRONG.AND GOD WILL PUNISH THOSE OF US WHO KNOW WHAT IS RIGHT AND FAIL TO DO IT.SO MY ADVICE TO U IS ALWAYS DO GOOD AND POSITIVE THINGS SO U CAN INFLUENCE OTHER YOUTHS AND PROMOTE PEACE IN UR COMMUNITY.BLESSINGS TO U MY FRIEND.
Blessings to you to “my friend!”…
Child, I completely agree with you. I have children and I believe parents are the first and most influential teachers. Many, many parents have failed their children and I believe that this is the root of the problem.
you completely agree with a child that think there is nothing wrong with hitting a teacher over the head with a stick because someone pour oil on the bridge…i was about to ask you not to breed but its too late
now dont get carried away, but thats why i will always say in todays world, not even sunday school i teaching anybodys child….hell no…no me possie
well all i know that i am a student i am not in such things but is time for someone to do something about what is happen in the school as a 5th former i need notes
5 years u teaching u doh have 500 dollars… students cannot respect a man that acts as immature as them…
Are you ignorant? or just stupid
This is an ignorant & stupid person you’re so right.
you know if the person have a loan? you know if the man have other expensives? you know how his money budget?
so because he’s a poor man children can burst his head but if he was a rich millionaire respect him…sigh…please dont breed
No school rules, teacher rules, parent rules or any constitutional law shall keep me in line. I LOVE my PM.
WTH. Tourists not safe, teachers not safe. Dominica going crazy!!
This the kind of nonsense that does get me mad. To much of these students believe deh bad. If I was Fari the police would be looking for me all now. The ministry say they want us the teachers to protect the students but who deh hell going protect us. All them students who believe deh bad we deh teachers need to get them a dark room and beat the heck out of all of them. On a last note I feel if student come to school with the mentality that he bad. I going have the mentality to mash one ah dem up when deh react.
I am a past student of DGS, and that was unheard of during my time. It is tiem for us to take back that school. I suggest all students who are trouble makers should be expelled because they are not there to learn but to cause trouble.
Mr Hyacinth does not deal with these issues properly. When students like these are suspended and their parents go to him, without hearing from the principal he sits in his office and asks the principal to allow these student to return. It is time for this nonsense to stop.Wonder how he feeling now. These people are not ready.
I am a student at dgs and it is a shame to see the level of disrespect for teachers at the school. Students curse continuously in teachers presence and the teachers cant do anything because they feel threatened. A teachers jaw has been broken by a student in the past. The school is drug infested and the population of 100 students is to big to handle. Parents barely show up for meetings. Lastly with all due respect but Ms Jean-Jacques cannot manage the school from a disciplinary standpoint. She is too soft and lenient with the children and this sets bad precedents. Children do so much wrong and get away with it. The younger teachers are really struggling and are really disrespected.
UMMM…isn’t this assault? Isn’t assault a crime in Dominica? Shouldn’t one press charges against an individual who has assaulted them? Shouldn’t the police after reviewing the evidence arrest a person charged with assault? Shouldn’t that individual appear before a magistrate?
When you’ve assaulted someone and inflict bodily shouldn’t the criminal be the one forced to pay the bill? If you don’t pay the bill, shouldn’t you be sent to jail? Shouldn’t the criminal be sued for not only medical portion of the bill but also emotional distress?
Just asking a few questions because it seem I’m in the twilight zone. I see people taking about closed down school and what not like thats really the most rational way of dealing with crimes like these.
Dominica the island hasn’t changed but Dominican standards on child up bringing has changed. Mothers and fathers making babies are shameful. I could never under any circumstance do that to any teacher. My mother would never have tolerated that. Today I would be walking with a limp if I had tried naything like that. Thats why alot of people don’t want to teach at black schools or be around young black kids. Just an exmple of their parents. My mother would bring inside of the police station to have me arrested before she would allow me to go home.
Incompetent ministry filled with incompetent people, incompetent magistrate, Incompetent attorney general and prosecutors, incompetent PM, incompetent lawyers, incompetent hospital system, incompetent parents, incompetent police. Aye aye I just see Dominica and she’s heading down the drain!
To answer your questions;
1. Yes assault is a crime in Dominica. However Mr. Winston would have to make a formal report to the police or give consent for charges to be preferred. After investigations, the following cahrges could be preferred- Assualy, Battery, Wounding, Wounding with intent, Attempted murder
2. Yes the person can be arrested but that depends on the investigating officer and his supervisors. If he is simply charged with the lesser crimes like battery or assault the he can also be charged, read his rights and released pending a court date when he will be served a summon to appear.
3. The police can arrest for any crime committed in their presence or a warrant have to be gotten unless they are in immediate pursuit of an escaped prisoner. However, if this student was arrested by a civillian (other teacher etc) and turned over to the police then this arrest would have been legal.
Just a little help with legal matters
This is a total shock, i can’t believe it. First of i think they really need to sort the country out and put stuff straight. Based on a comment i read about ” kids usually respect teachers who are respectable towards them” yeah fair enough but then again we go to school to learn and not for teachers to be kind to us,they are here to do their job. so what if a teachers speaks badly let it slide whats the point getting all mad , what these idiots kids do not realise is that in the real working world things are much harder than this and your going to meet tons of mean people out there and there will always be people who won’t like you truth is in life not everyone is going to like us. These kids obviously don’t get education at home cause some of their parents back them up just in the way that they speak and some make their kids believe that no matter what a teacher has to respect you! But hey, we are teenagers we somehow have to respect our superiours whether we like it or not! that’s just the way it is. I’m a teenager myself. I think teachers need more respect from the kids, even though sometimes they say mean stuff or piss us off that’s nothing in life!! Those kids need to realize that they are here to prepare them for the world of work and get an idea of how things are going to be, & ensure they have a basic education level cause majority of them need it because that’s all they will get due to some of their families financial status ( not saying all of them are poor). They need to say thankgod they get to have an education and go to school unlike kids who don’t even know what education is!! I think all this is due to the fact most dominicans are just negative towards their own selves and country thats why it never advances! All they care about is partying and such, think they know it all , when help is being offered they have to say something negative! Parents need to educate their kids otherwise they wont get far believe it or not! and then they say the teachers don’t teach them well , like shut up atleast your kid is getting an education! All they do is hate on each other and think they are the baddest, first thing they go for in an argument is a weapon? Like grow up seriously. Their mentality is really poor. and i’m not being judgemental or anything it’s based on things i’ve seen whilst i’ve been there. And i’m not aiming everything i say on the whole population but majority of them. I also think that the goverment needs to pay for the teacher’s medical needs , there shouldn’t be no buts! Start doing your job!
@ former teacher …from reading your comment i came to the conclusion that there are more then just 2 or 3 problem kids….seem like it is a major problems in schools……so much so that it caused you to leave the teaching profession….you even think that metal detectors should be installed and it is not just the male students …THE FEMALE STUDENTS ARE JUST AS DIFFICULT…………waw….so what do you suggest….just expel these kids and mess things up for them permanently? THEY WILL later turn into criminals and it will be the a bigger problem for the country THE PROBLEM IS Parents IF YOU FAIL TO ADMIT THE PROBLEM the viscous cycle will continue…………….THINGS ARE ONLY GOING TO GET WORST
they will later turn into criminals?what’s missing from the recipe for them to be considered criminals…the only thing they doing is spoiling good children
The ministry of Education needs to revaluate the services which it provides. The school counselors are never available because they are limited to an entire district and have to travel in between schools. AS for the Special Education Department I understand that it is a one woman department who cannot possible serve the students of Dominica all by herself. With a Special education department, children with behavioral problems would be given special attention thus reducing this kind of problems. Anxiety, anger, frustration, hunger, etc etc etc can lead to something as big as this. In this modern age of technology Dominica Education System needs to step up and serve the population. It is time to meet the needs of the students regardless of what their parents did or did not do. It is a crying shame that this has to happen to a teacher. Has this child shown any visible signs of needing attention, and just be considered bad or rude? Come on, away with this antiquated style. The ministry of Education needs a fresh awaking, new tools and any one who can understand the plight of today’s society and children.
Mackak Connet Key Bwa E Car Mou Tay.! That’s all i will say because i am too vex! Good Night to all!
i wud totally agree with the strike if CSEC wasn’t just around the corner…no teachers in classes=more violent fights between students….teachers r standing up to protect themselves when a coworker wz hurt…mayb we as students shud hav stood up to protect ourselves when our MANY fellow students were hurt….this has been going on 4 too long, something shud have been done earlier…now it’s harder to break down the violent foundation formed..most of allu cudnt survive a day at DGS
You students are just plain ole MALKASAY. It will all come home to roost with your own children.
seriously i can’t believe this bullshit the young kids of today unsafe working conditions if i was the teacher i would defend myself by kicking tht hooligan in his head i am very outraged
You mean no statement yet from the Ministry of Education?
Ministry of education still celebrating his Victory in court.
wtf ?????? i go dgs for five years an it always had some drama but da is d worst i see yuh…..teacher an students always use to hav problems but it get da extreme to d point where farai get a burst head from a student..hmmm i hope things change an my past school gets better
Nothing will change! The AMERICAN EDUCATION act thet our government has developed allows them to do whatever the hell they want……We have some in PRIMARY school dere….JAH kno what they will be when they go to HIGH SCHOOL. Messed up but true…..
best you’ll start sending out applications wi
Boii grammar school changing…. Why dey doe expel d boy dat do dah??? Hm..
expelling the boy won’t change it the teachers will not feel safe any more…they need to teach the hold school a lesson its due time we teach those children a lesson close down the school

Takw tese kids out of the skl its not safe for the teachers or the other students
way lala
CLOSE DOWN THE SCHOOL HATE MY COMMENT OR LIKE IT, ITS MY VIEW TEACHERS TRYING TO LET CHILDREN DO GOOD SCHOOL AND IN THE END THAT’S WHAT YOU GETTING WELL ITS TIME FOR PETER TO PAY FOR PAUL
peter pay for paul..u find da making sense?? n how d rest of us gan learn? u want to tell me where u goin to out almost 1000 students?? must b in ur house
that’s a very dumb statement to make for a grown individual…are u aware of all the good that has come from this prestigious institution…stop being stupid for a moment and think of that
Support you Mr Letang. I am growing to love you more and moreas a leader.Seem as if those lazy heads at the Ministry of Education don’t care a d.. about what happens in the classroom, but we can say that you were quick to come out and CONDEMN THIS MADNESS…………………….WELL DONE!
WELL DONE INDEED!
When we parent our children, most times we give guidance to them on how to avoid being the victim of a crime and seldom give guidance on how to avoid being the perpetrator of a crime so that as the parent we avoid the possibility of paying bail or having to go to see them in jail…
I support the call by the general secretary of the PSU.I see and hear the utterances of some of these secondary school students, and trust me some of them are really terrible…
My nest question is why did the teacher have to pay anything $$$$$ in a life and/death situation like this…We brag and boast of being a caring and loving society, the man was attacked at his workplace couldn’t the authorities see this as a special case which necessitates a bending of the rule? THAT’S ONLY MY OPINION!
and in the meantime those worthless ministers have 1000 dollars per month health insurance policies
ah ma gwa sah
1. Parents your problem child is NOT your problem alone
2. The DGS has close to 1 000 students
3. There are two separate buildings and getting from one to the next is stress. To get from the old wing to a class on the top floor and to walk from the old wing to police station takes the same amount of time.
4. Mr C.E.O you, the ACEO and the SEO were not paying a “normal visit “ to the school..but then again we don’t know what you consider to be normal.
6. Marijuana on the school compound is a daily thing. Do you think the teachers on a daily basis can do searches? It takes time to do that and those students involved find ingenious places to hide them. Now when the school conducts searches the teachers put themselves at RISK.
6. In about 6 months time, CSEC (CXC) results will be out, and the DGS is not expected to feature highly. Then the powers that be on Cornwall Street will bray and give kudos to all those other schools who will do well. Here’s what they will not tell you:
(a) The DGS registered about 220 students to write CSEC – no other school in DA registered that number.
(b) That the school was forced to register students who do not know their A…from their elbow-when the teachers told Mr. Hyacinth that the students in the 5T’s could not write CSEC, that wasn’t his concern, he said register them and let them write the exams, Many of those students especially in the T’s are not interested. Their only concern is to smoke, drink, come to school and cause problems.
(c) The parents paid money to register them knowing fully well that some of them come to school with empty bags.
7. The school already knows that this year’s results will be dismal. Subjects, which over the years have received 100% pass at CSEC, are not expected to do so this year, because the school had to register tout moon
There’s so much more that could be written. Now review team you have work to do… Oh oh no it’s the investigating team, Call it what it is; you people are conducting an investigation and not a review as you claim.
DGS is not alone in that respect…It will get worse before it gets better.
they need to send bac semion joseph there..that’s wat they need to do
hmmm

That student should be shot in the leg and he would have to limp for a long time!
This is sad, I know the problems that DGS teachers are being faced with. Lord what is this world becoming ?????? Students attacking teachers ?
All of you who are there shedding air should shut up and put your there for a short while and see for yourselves. You all are the ones supporting such behaviours until it reaches home then you will call for help. As a teacher I KNOW FIRST HAND THE KIND OF ENVIRONMENT THAT WE WORK IN ON A DIALY BASIS WITH NO SUPPORT FROM MINISTRY OF EDUCATION NEITHER PARENTS THEMSELVES. SOME OF THE PARENTS CANNOT EVEN CONTROL THEIR KIDS BUT THEY WANT US TO CONTROL THEM. IN THAT EDUCATION SYSTEM WE WORK AMONG SOCIOPATHS, DRUG ADDICTS, DRUG DEALERS, STUDENTS WHO HAVE BEEN TO PRISON FOR VIOLENT BEHAVIOURS AND THEY ARE ALLOWED TO BE BACK AT SCHOOL AMONG OTHER KIDS AND TEACHERS. THEY THREATEN TEACHERS, CURSE TEACHERS. GO TAKE A LOOK IN THE POLICE STATION AND SEE HOW MANY REPORTS ARE THERE FOR THREATS AGAINST TEACHERS, AND YOU ALL ARE OPENING YOUR MOUTHS AND TALKING SUCH IGNORANCE. IF IT WERE THE OTHER WAY AROUND THERE WOULD NOT BE WATER TO WASH THAT TEACHER AND HE WOULD BE AT HIS HOME. THE STUDENT ON THE OTHER HAND IS ALLOWED TO GO BACK TO SCHOOL AND SOMETIMES SEAT IN THAT SAME CLASS. WHAT MESSAGE ARE WE SENDING? LET ME TELL YOU ALL NOW, SAY THANK GOD FOR THE TEACHERS WHO ARE DEALING WITH THIS EVERYDAY BECAUSE NOT EVEN THE MINISTRY OFFICIALS WANT TO DEAL WITH THEM. HOW MANY OF THEM COME TO THE SCHOOL, THEY ARE NOT SEEN ON THE SCHOOL GROUNDS. WHEN LAST HAS MR. HYACINTH PUT HIS FEET AT THE SCHOOLS ESPECIALLY THIS ONE TO SEE WHAT IS HAPPENING. SOMETHING NEEDS TO BE DONE NOW! SEND A MESSAGE. YOU AL HAVE CREATED THE MONSTER DEAL WITH IT. DO NOT LEAVE YOUR TEACHERS IN THE MINE FIELD.
I have said time and time again, this Ministry of Education is the worst of all Ministries.
It should be called the Ministry of Laziness.
the person that dislike that comment i’m making an A** of myself and assumming that you click the wrong thumb right ?
That madness hav to stop..i would send the young student to spend a few days in stockfarm so he wud see how it feels like to be a criminal! …i hope he does not return to school with that violent attitude because he can end up killing a person! my little sister attends that school and God alone knows what i would do if she was that victim!
They will say he is a juvenile. But,but, but, but, HE IS A LUCKY GUY! If you know what i mean.. I am also a teacher.
he might not be so lucky nah his mother might have to tie him to his bed if she want to see him in her eyes. ALL I SAYING IS FARI FROM STOCKFARM
he was injured on the job, his employer, the government of Dominica has to pay his medical bils.
I agree.
dat tru. i totally agree
100% in agreement! the student’s parents should foot that bill as well.
100% in agreement.
that’s exactly what I am asking, where is his medical insurance… the government has to pay for his bills, what they are waiting until he dies to do something, then it will be too late…
hmm that’s what has become of my alma mater
after the teaching, bringing home d school wrk and wrking jus tirelessly alot of times doin the jobs the parents should have done with their children long ago before high school and now with our “universal education” teaching 12-16year olds how to read and write properly hmph the teachers work are really never done and the salary not even enough; the man can’t do a head scan smh
Regardless of what you think took place. This is just PLAIN UNACCEPTABLE. TEACHERS STAY IN THE STAFF ROOM UNTIL YOU GET JUSTICE. THE PARENT SHOULD PAY FOR THE CT SCAN.
so what bout d rest of d students da need to learn we haffi suffer too?? they need to take out the MANY bad eggs and leave d good ones cuz i care about my education…i have goals to reach n i can’t reach them if i have no teacher
Ah boy..Never say Never…Some people just keep opening their mouth and blame the present administration for every crime that takes place in Dominica;but keep silent to the motive of the things that are advocated by some talk show hosts on Q95 and their Callers. But Time will tell. All rope has an end and all road has a bend.
but u are not making any sense! its the ministry of education thats the boss of all schools, teachers and principals.
I Like Your Name!
you have to be a deadly or crucial teacher to deal with these kinds of wooligans that going to school these days . you have to be the real beast master.you have to blame the society and laws in the country today that is creating these monsters.all i can say teachers stand up for teachers. please stand up for one another.no retreat no surrender when it comes for fighting for teachers rights.
since when mr wilson left… d.g.s got bad….. ok.. the fair skinned lady who took over.. it was kind of calm…. yes mrs jean-jacque who seemed to be like mr wilson’s right hand lady…. but since mrs jean-jacque left and they brought a happy dude.. it’s like all broke lose on d.g.s… it was like a curse hit the school…. because students didn’t see the ‘figure head’ as a man to respect…. the morale has never been the same or return to how it was during mr wilson’s tenure… and i even heard it was even better b4 mr wilson… boy willie give some man blows already eh… even prefect lol….
you talking nonsense because am a student of the school
Ahwa It started going bad in Wilson time. Not saying is his fault but you and the happy dude comment just adding to the problem!
Lol… how you know all that MOTS?
I am 100000000 percent sure, if it was Fari that had done this to the student MINIstry would have fired him the same day. Layer papers would be swinging from the parents, etc. Sue the damn Ministry and the parents because is they that suitiwehing them students. I have already told the students “no time they think they putting their hands on me i taking the whole hand, from the shoulder down to the palm. Is time those U.S.E students know who is the boss…..thank u. Oh i want to hear what Mr. Homes n BLEIZE have to say.
i wish i cld ‘like’ ur comment 10 000 times
i wish it had a love button
And they vex because DICE recognizing teachers. Only teacher need to take that kind of abuse . If this teacher had retaliated he would have been arrested for child endangerment. Teacher you got hurt while doing your duty you shouldn’t have to come up with 500 dollars . Find a lawyer and sue – tot mon sue teacher sue too
he shud really SUE them dont be scared FARI stand up for your right, if is in the US they finish bat. Please speak to a lawyer knwo your rights and how you should legall deal wththis situation be a big man you got hurt from a Kid who has ego and anger management problem. Make sure you get the best medical care go overseas for your scan Dca medical is a waist of time. This country and INJUSTICE is getting to me right now soemthing will happen eh just wait.
It is very sad when we hear of those situations in recent times Simeon Joseph tried strict rules and the teachers at the school did not support him,so it begs the question?
omg my teacher wii. sir we missin u alot in class get well soon. we love n miss u.
children used to respect teachers when teachers were respectable thats all im saying
nonesense
@ eyes and ears………schools have security officers now? wow.. i did not know that….i may not be the brightest person out there….but i refuse to Believe that this kid attacked the teacher in that manner because the teacher was simply assisting…he must have roughed up that student badly….the boy was already angered and he should have gone and tried to cool him down instead of making hi more angry
this is the first part of my comment…and nurse Sheena please reread my comment…
These are the nonsense comments that I find the most annoying. There is absolutely no excuse for that behaviour for a student towards a teacher or anyone else for that matter. We make all sorts of excuses for disrespect and violence, that is UNTIL IT COMES HOME.
u under a rock man? even primary skools have security officers…DGS have bout 4 but a security officer can stop a child? d child actually swinged after d officer n mr.winston wz behind him…
Tiny you must be the biggest ass in Dominica right now!! best u shut up! As u said you might not be the brightest person out there and by the looks of your foolish comments i must say you r definitely not any where close to being bright!! take a hint and let grown mature people comment!
tiny…i swear i just feel like telling u a bunch of bad words
Garcon I teach at a secondary school and there is no way if this happens to me that student would walk on the streets feeling safe. I would find him even under his mom bed and disfigure his face as well as cripple him.
Zakaya turn west… He always fighting and getting suspended guess they will finally expel him now.
NOTHING LIKE DIS SHOULD BE HAPPENING IN SCHOOLS AND MEASURES SHOULD BE PUT IN PLACE TO CURB VIOLENCE IN SCHOOLS
“I was asked to take a CT scan after bleeding today through my nose and experiencing dizziness at school, the scan cost EC$500.00 and I have no money and no one at the hospital is prepared to assist saying it must be paid before the scan is done,” he said with a sigh.”
Where is the common sense and health concerns. Couldn’t they have him sign a promissory note or something as a waiver to take the scan? Could the Ministry of Education, union, school principal cover the fees and bill the teacher after?
I refuse to believe that the hospital put a life at risk over $500.00….
Please believe that statement… Fari would not lie about that,…..I know him from small.. he is a very good boy.. As a matter of fact i had that Same experience.. the hospital staff WONT do the scan if the $500.00 is not IN THEIR FACE ! !
they do
What a shame!! Let me, first of all, wish the teacher a speedy recovery. No teacher should have to suffer at the hands of students. Where has respect for adults and authority gone?
Secondly, why don’t teachers have health insurance. Teaching is a 24/7 job. Teachers are over worked and stressed out for very little compensation. I feel for this young teacher. After working at a secondary school for 5 years he cannot pay $500.00 for a scan. Is that how we take care of our professionals? Is that the situation we want our graduates to return to? MOTS, here’s another opportunity for us to partner together to set up a health insurance agency. For a small monthly fee we can cover all the teachers, nurses, and other public servants. We will expand to private sector workers and the self-employed if all goes well. Applications are accepted for the positions of clerical staff and 10 agents – one for each parish. Investors $dollar$ are welcome.
Finally, fellow teachers, as much as I feel your pain, you have no business “apprehending” students unless there is imminent danger to staff and other students. Physical contact with students is not advised. A word from the ……(afraid to say ‘wise’ to anger Francisco. Let’s just say ‘idiot’ instead. Right, Francisco?). Been there.
DNO, your new format has taken standard writng to the gutters. I’ve tried block paragraphs which requires skipping one line but your new format eliminates that line. I’ve tried indentation, but that too is eliminated. Everything is bundled together like one big paragraph. It makes reading boring and frustrating and reflects poorly on the writer. What’s up?
i went to school with winston, am so sorry my padner , so the those children are, ungrateful.
If this child were in the U.S. he would be in handcuffs.
This generation want to mirror the American lifestyle- The dressing, the attitude, even the accent. This is so wrong. Had it been the other way around it would have been concluded as child abuse! This could have been fatal if he had been hit in a more sensitive spot.
This is absolute nonesense! someone need to knock that crap out of these kids. What happen to the days when kids could not even shouw up in incomplete uniform? or could not even speak in class without permission? The old generation has truly thinned out and the new did not learn fromt he old. ALAS!
This is the direct result of universal education. All dem rats from gutter village and tarish pit in class rooms gibing teachers hell. But If I was the teacher I would sue the school for lack of protection. They teachers are not even insured, as well as the parents of the children after the child is found guilty of DBH!!!!
I feel offended that you have called the children from gutter and Tarish pit rats. yes they maybe very bad and whatever but rats???
If the head is weak, then the body has no direction. The principal of this school is not doing much to discipline the students. The principal allows some of the teachers to run the school while she sits in her office all day.
one thing i know if he had a teacher like some i know between 63 and 70,right now he would be nursing his wounds.we are too modernise and this cause us to forget respect to parents far less for teachers.it’s extremely sad.in my dys teachers were like parents.boog mwen, ou sali dlo a ou.you dirty your own water .damn donkey.wrong or right,if you were my son,i would deal with you.
I think that they should press charges against the student and expell him from school. If this is not done then this situation will happen again.
Sing it for the teachers King Dice. People do not know what teachers are experiencing with classes of 22 or 32.
I went to DGS in the time of Felix Wilson. And during that time none of this would happen. Mr. Wilson was the best person for DGS. He made sure excelling in studies was a must, and that we uphold the integrity of the school.
I was also a teacher during the era of Mr. Wilson, and though many of us may not have agreed with some of his ‘governing’ skills…I know for a fact that a student wouldn’t dare do something like this. What is happening to my beloved DGS?
Dice said it all. Teachers have no recognition. People are so ungrateful these days.
COME ON THE GOVERNMENT SHOULD INTERVENE AND GIVE THE TEACHER A DAMN SCAN. WHERE IS HIS SOCIAL SECURITY MONEY?WHERE IS HIS TAX MONEY?
Since that UNIVERSAL EDUCATION nonsence started in Dominica( with all kinds of way-ward , good for nothings ,not ready to learn crap students attending high school) all kinds are things are happening in high schools. Students attacking students and vice versa. Maybe all high schools should be privately runned and then things will run better
TRUE SAY . government cannot run their ministries is not school they have time for
The parents of the student I meant to say
Let the parents pay the medical bill and suspend the idiot from school, he needs to be in a juvenile delinquent center
suspend? u know hw much suspensions da boy get already…but the education act not allowing him to be expelled…
totally agree. the parents must be sued and also the city of roseau and the govt. someone must be an example of this foolishness. who’s to blame? too many young soffie soffie in high positins thats the reason no one respects the laws
You that TINY there what you see behind teachers you well see. You keep coming up with excuses, but today it’s him, tommorow is SOCIETY! People are you are responsible for the criminal elements we have overunning society.
Government has to meet has to meet this young mans’ medical bills!!! or the boy parents. You can’t talk to them, is ..”when I see you I will mash you up..” These kids are violent, they need metal dectectors at ALL schools in Dominica. Who goes to school with jeyes and knife? I am outraged!
Me I’m done with teaching. The girls are sometimes even worst than the boys. What is wrong with these kids today?
oooh lord it hurts my heart to see that was done to one of the most out standing male teacher at dgs…what a shame!! yet ministry officials as usual sit in their offices and all they do is formulate rules. Are they even aware of what these teacher go through on a day to day basis? I myself taught at DGS and I know for a fact that that is not the first time such violence to teachers have been demonstrated yet still I see nothing has been done. Fari hang in there, continue to be a role model to the young boys at school. I know that DGS teachers will stand by your side!!
Look at the man’s head!! A stick with a nail? this is attempted murder as far as I am concerned. Was the student arrested?
it do damm rigth because teacher belive that they are kids friend … teachers are teachers and kids are kids… teachers know your place
nY get a life. being a teacher is one of the most difficult jobs
what an idiotic comment!!!!!
Tiny you must be the biggest FOOL in Dominica right now!! best u shut up! As u said you might not be the brightest person out there and by the looks of your foolish comments i must say you r definitely not any where close to being bright!! take a hint and let grown mature people comment!
In this situation, provided the teacher has not broken any rules, that the employer provide at least a percentage towards his urgent medical bills.
Anonymous, you r a jack.
Come on man! This is rubbish.. Young children should learn to conduct themselves and act as CHILDREN! When I attended DGS we had fights yes but no one ever attacked a teacher! This is absolute nonsense! This child should be expelled! Fari I ask God’s healing upon you!
them teachers have to know were to stand. not every student that is the same, you might conceder dealing with the students in a different way is not all students that will stand for that!!!!
@ New York…why not give the counsel about friendship to the parents? @Past DGS Student I agree totally. This type of behaviour is INEXCUSABLE.
some people just talking . unless students obey and respect people in authority these kinds of things will continue to happen. some of those kids beating up their own parents. they have malaydission nd that is why i think the teacher should have struck him back on the head and even harder. he should have taken the same ride to the hospital as the teacher
It seems right now that since Ministry is not concerned about teachers, thye teachers need to take things into their own hands. Hyacinth and Blaize do not care about teachers.
any student who does that to me ends up over d balcony
then i buying my own handcuffs and walking up stock farm
damnnnnnnnn riteeeeeeeee
TINY IS A BIG FOOOOOL
WHY IS THE TEACHER PAYING SOCIAL SECURITY IS IT NOT FOR SITUATIONS LIKE THIS COME ON
Teacherrrrrr, although you are the lowest paid
you are the one on whom the highest demands are made.
Hold strong teacher.
the teacher is apparantly only giving his side of the story????
@Hbn… what are you talking about …HIs injuries cleary shows his side of the story. I don’t understand why kids of today have to turn to violence for everything
seems u know the other side..so give the other side!!
While it is true that every story has three sides, there is no reason why a school child should act so violently toward a teacher. Children now-a-days are unruly, malicious; just simply out of control.
THis is just too sad.
You absolute. When will it be justifiable for a student to cause grievous bodily harm to a teacher! It’s ignorant un educated morons like you causing my country to be getting a bad name.
hbn u are obviously a fool. A child has no reason to raise their hand on a teacher especially if the child isn’t threatened. You were not there so i STRONGLY suggest you keep your useless comments to yourself.
Well I would like to hear the other side
hbn, “side of story” has nothing to do with that. The attack on the teacher was intentional. He actually left the teacher and returned to him with a nail on the stick! I do not care who you are or how old this student is.This is clearly an aggravated assault. This kid needs to be strictly disciplined. No ifs ands or buts about it!
I was going to reply to that statement whoever or whatever your are hbn not will let you bliss in your ignorance.
What is your side? Security at ALL the secondary schools with no exception is a matter of concern. Not only DGS.
hbn SHUT UP! u must b worse dan d chile!
Tiny, I think you should just roll yourself outta here…The KID’s actions was not ‘just resisting’
YOU DO NOT RESIST AN ACTION BY GOING TO LOOK FOR A PIECE OF WOOD WITH A NAIL IN IT AND COMING BACK TO ATTACK A PERSON…That is of malicious intent…And if the student is that malicious, then he is a treat to others AND NEEDS TO BE EXPELLED…They should also list his name and picture so we can all beware.
resisting the security officer smarty….if he was resisting then the teacher should try to calm the situation….but i have a deep feeling that the teacher rough the guy up….now the teacher’s action could have been justified if the student was trying to hurt the security officer….do you people need every thing spelled out …maan…..that boy must be really crazy if he just hit the teacher because he was assisting….how was he assisting?
they only told fari side a do get my story y didnt he tell them he struck me firts in my head
There’s no way u could defend ur actions dere my boy. U were called to the office, u just need to go!!! If u resist arrest from the police u get a beat down, in this case u were called because u already broke the rules. If ur a continuous rule breaker maybe school is not for u!
That’s what DNO is there for…Go to the office and tell your “side”
If you had a complaint— then you take it up with the appropriate authorities!!! The answer is not to play bad man and go hit an adult. That is totally unacceptable. THINK before you ACT. Otherwise your life will be full of episodes like this until you land in jail or worse.
It’s like the poor guy is on his own here, he needs $500.00 to do a scan, I remember I had to pay that same $500.00 for that same scan only to be told by the doctor to just wear a neck brace. If the guy dies because he didn’t so the scan to determine what is wrong I wonder what will be said…only after we cut the last tree, catch the last fish and poison the last river we will realize money isn’t worth anything!!!
It looks like a security officer will have to be placed in every classroom since every teacher will not feel safe
I hope whoever you are you are not being sarcastic, because you all aware of the violent children in the school. You all are the ones encouraging such behaviours until it reaches home. the teacher are not the only ones at risk, the other students are also at risk because they are being stabbed, hit with stones and bottles in their heads and it is being swiped under the carpet. We like to wait until something happens to do something. WELL IT HAS TO STOP NOW! NO MORE
teachers are so underpaid d man cannot even pay for a scan and month end soooo far. kids have lost all respect for those in authority. d country UPSIDE DOWN. well, so it will stay, d whole government in d same corruption. d whole system in a mess.
we maybe need a flood to clean d place.
we’re in your hands lord
America dat dere man?
Don’t get me started with these people on here making excuses for the behavior…All these wanna-be THUGS/PUNKS who are taking up the value of the education system,I have zero tolerance. Back in the day, school was for learning and growing the mind, yeah, sometimes there were times when some teachers stuck a nerve…But these kids need to learn something about humility..Yeah it builds your character. It is completely unacceptable to talk back to a teacher, know you darn place!!! This child should be expelled without question and any others like him should be too…
Parents, your darn jobs are to train up your children the right way… Teachers do not have to deal with this…Expel them all, I say.
To the person on here who said, that we do not know what it is like to teach Grammar school, I believe you and I support you. The principal should support you to…I say ZERO TOLERANCE and expel them if that is the trend. Teach the ones who want to learn
we don’t know what happen teacher lies a lot
fix your grammar. it’s “Teachers lie” NOT teacher lies!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I can see that you are or was a U.S.E student
That is why you should shut up,because you don’t know what happened. I sympathize with the teacher.
well my teacha didnt lie- d boy go n voleh a jay money in students bag n dey were jus tryin to get him to go into the office n he start to act up so is best u shut ur mouth der ehh
Seems that youth didn’t hear King Dice’s Song! Well look more support for the King from the teachers.
On a serious note that is despicable and should be dealt with immediately. Bring back Felix Wilson or get Br. Germain. Wilson and Germain had to deal with a set of hoodlums including the “Honorable” but I never heard of this type of violence. If they want to be violent bring in the Police to deal with them!
In a system where children are given far more protection than the teachers, we expect the youth to take advantage of that situation. Today’s teachers are not motivated in their jobs because of the lack of strong representation for their jobs.
But when we have students who do not have the necessary capabilities to perform academically at a high school level, being forced to do such, we end up in a system where there are frustrated and penned in. What we see here is simply an example of what happens in a system with no boundaries, and no way to deal with students who learn in different ways, and no way of separating them. The system is what has failed here. U.S.E needs a complete revision… and teachers need more protection.
@ Anonymous
You made some good points. I reside in Toronto. I recall reading in a newspaper, not all children are academically-inclined. If some are slow, incapable of studying and completing school, they may receive special schooling or they could also study for another job/career.
Children who have projected that they are not academically-inclined will be encouraged to pursue some other form of education and prepare for another career.
Dominica may not have this type of curriculum activity. Every one was not meant to be a doctor, engineer, etc. This is life and the make-of, of life. I am certain that God has arranged this. It does not mean that these children are not intelligent. God gave every one some degree of intelligence.
It appears that the Minister of Education will have to consider this and try to help those children in another manner. Some of them should not have been sent to high school. They may be forced to study and remain in school and they may be unhappy about it which results in an unhealthy situation as this. This is something all adults concerned should know and keep in mind.
The student who injured the teacher should receive counseling and quized, respectfully, about his lifestyle also at home to determine why he is unruly and injured the teacher. Underneath, he may be an angry and unhappy child/student. May he nor his parent(s) not blame the teacher who was performing his job. Does DA have a child psychologist who could interview and counsel such children? As I write ideas flow through my mind.
According to a famous leader allu too free in Dominica. Even teachers getting blows from students now? Ebeh look it! Time to bring back the cat-o-nine. However this is just the continuation of the symptons of a society in decay. When the head is rotten the tail will be no different. I wish Mr. Winston a speedy recovery.
so sorry that this happen. when we want to bring the American style in our system, what do you expect. teachers have no right to punish children because the law say so. if the teacher had bit the hell off him we would hear story. parents are called and do not turn up to school. parents come to school and insult the principal, teacher when they are corrected, so what do we expect. change the law. when Mr Lockhart, Brother Jermain and many other tough principal they child would obey, but again we a leaving in the internet world, where children do what they want and no man jack there correct them, because their whole family on your back. Education Officials can’t do anything for that. They take drastic measures, they will blame someone. take him to court and let him pay for it.
@ young voter
Children are future adults. They should be taught and disciplined appropriately.
These types of ill-behaved children do not belong in such a school setting. I do believe that the school authorities should not be lenient towards them. Tough love should be practiced. DA should have a “boot camp” to send them to where they could learn good behaviour. This would change their ways.
The only resort is for the Police to arrest those students. It appears that they are juvenile delinquents who need to be incarcerated, receive counseling in no uncertain terms and hopefully to be rehabilitated. This probably would teach the parents and children something. Those parents who oppose school discipline and who support their misbehaved children, who do not support and encourage the teachers in the discipline of their children also need to receive discipline, at their age.
There are some bleeding hearts that will feel sorry for those children and soften up towards them. This is why disobedient children as this one will continue lawlessly and will never change. Some adults are to be blamed for this.
This child needs to be expelled. Teacher needs to sue the studnet and parents.
@ eagles 125
I endorse that. This should be done with no hesitation. The teacher deserves to be compensated for injury, pain and suffering. Apology is not enough, should the student/parent(s) offer it. The impact of the weapon could have killed the teacher. I do hope the teacher seeks compensation. I would be disappointed if I heard/read that he did not seek same.
What a disgrace that the hospital refused to give him a CT Scan due to funds. This is one heartless hospital policy. People have died of head and chest wounds because a scan was not performed.
Universal Secondary Eduction (dominica style)
take everybody and just put them in high school whether win, lose or draw.
bye bye
@ Met Yo
In bygone years it was not so. Times have changed. After I read that shocking story, I reminisced about my high school days and the strict discipline that children of that era received in school; no exception from their parents.
By 7:00 pm children were at their parents’ home. There were also “fairs” on a Sunday which the school children would also attend. We had so much, amicable and clean fun. Every one was well-behaved. High school students met others and became friends, some life-long ones. It is a pleasure to meet with them. As an adult, I view parental and school discipline to be an asset to all children, if they are obedient.
I also recall those days when the high schools authorities, the Convent High School, St. Mary’s Academy and Dominica Grammar School would hold teenage dances which took place in the afternoon (imagine)
It appears that children of today are a different breed, if you know what I mean. Some do not accept discipline, be it from their parents or teachers. Since this is their attitude, they must be handled differently, with an iron rod of discipline and disciplinary measures.
I hope the Minister of Education reads the comments of all those who are shocked at this incident and have projected empathy for the injured teacher and other teachers and take note and do something about it. It is a serious matter. Immediate disciplinary action is necessary.
I recognize that there are good, well-behaved children. A few bad eggs among them could spoil the group’s reputation, give the others a bad name and disturb the peace in the school, as a few examples. I reiterate that something must be done about those badly behaved children who lack discipline and respect for the teachers and even their peers.
This is so troubling. We boast about the education we received as kids and it is a shame to hear of this type of violent towards those that are trying to help our kids. What is more troubling is the responses here.
What if teachers ask you to keep your unruly kids at home? Would that work for you? I say expel them and let them stay with their no good parents, that they can go ahead and beat up their own parents. This can only lead to much bigger crime related problems down the road.
People like Tiny and other are so ignorant, you just have to put them in a barrel and roll them out. There is no reason why a student should strike a teacher, this student is out of place and rude. It is time that the Ministry of Education stop sweeping things under the carpet, come out and amend the
education act because children have too many rights while the teachers have none.
It is so sad, teacher, I feel 4 u hold strong. We must imagine ourselves in the teacher’s place,I am always tellin my son teachers & nurses should b given the highest respect.2 ask 4 4giveness or 2 say u r sorry will never help 2 heal d wound , the child could kill teacher. wat ashame!!!!Sir i am prayin 4 u. I can’t say I know how u feelin is only u know.Lord I plead your blood upon the teachers of the D.G.S from their crown of their head to the soul of their feet.Thank U lord, in Jesus name I pray. AMEN!!!
Boyyy Dominica was so different under Eugenia time.
Even Parry had more sense, what happen to our Dominica????
every damn fing for allu is politics!! where eugenia reaching in dat? shut up!!! a serious ting happen with a teacher and dat crap u saying? anyways i wish healing upo the teacher and that child should be dealt with accordingly
AMEN TO THAT BRO OR SIS
@ eyes and ears………schools have security officers now? wow.. i did not know that….i may not be the brightest person out there….but i refuse to Believe that this kid attacked the teacher in that manner because the teacher was simply assisting…he must have roughed up that student badly….the boy was already angered and he should have gone and tried to cool him down instead of making hi more angry
now if he was trying to hurt the security officer then i can justify the teacher’s action….but if the kid was just resisting then there was no need to…….anyways i don’t know what took place…would sure like to know
oh common, there is no justification for a SCHOOL CHILD to hit a TEACHER with a piece of WOOD in his head.the student in the incident wasnt hospitalized or didnt need to seek medical attention , so it is obvious he wasnt injured and he infact was the aggressor.Fari has been teaching at DGS for some years now and has never abused his authority as a teacher to attack any student.
Then I suggest you don’t say anything tiny. And get the facts. That child should not be in the system>
u not knowing anything that took place is better of than you knowing! have a nice day.. oh by the way.. u shud embrace this quote for the rest of your week- “knowing profiteths me nothing”
Tiny — It appears that you do have a “tiny” mind based on your perceptions
Geeeeeeeeeeeeeze…give it a rest.
Then shut up!
@ tiny
You read the article. What else and what more do you need to know? The student deliberately injured the teacher on the head. This was his intent. It could also have been his intention to kill him and it could very well have happened.
Yes mam. We do have security guards. They do try to assist but the children are rude and fearless of them. They curse and threaten them constantly. When fights break out police has to be called to control students and/or escort them outside.
And yes mam. The stuudent refused to go to the office escorted by the security guard so the teacher assisted and got hurt. Ok
@ eyes and ears
What type of children go to that school? I wonder how did they complete elementary school? If they were unruly in elementary school, they should have been automatically disqualified from attending high school. It is as simple as that.
This type of behaviour should not be occurring in a school and a high school at that. Something is wrong with those children. They appear to be uncontrollable. If they are not disciplined and they refuse to obey, the Police should arrest them, charge them and they should be imprisoned. This may be the medicine and remedy they need to change their lawless mannerisms, if they ever do.
Do these children go to Church? If they do, they should know how to conduct themselves and have respect for the teachers.
On another note. What type of parents do they have and how were they nurtured? They are sadly lacking in discipline. Parents are responsible for the actions of their under-age school children. They should be held accountable.
All schools in DA should apply zero tolerance.
What a twit! Why blame the victim?
Them teacher does want to talk to students like is they that feeding them so students reacting now is problem …SMFH
If you are a student, maybe one day you will touch the wrong teacher.
You are just an idiot by your comments! These patents need to control their children and teach them respect. They are in school to learn and there is a right way to address grievances.
Where has respect gone we have young parents who cant even controll themselves what do we expect the children to do. On the other hand the Goverment should have an insurance plan set up when an employee get hurt on the job they should be covered by that plan this young teacher went to the hospital and he didnt have the money to get a scan to save his life he was sent home this is ridiculous the Ministry of Education take a look at this advice
Students have absolutely no right to raise their hand on a teacher. Some children now are downright unruly with no regards for people in authority. Children need to be children!
This sounds like an aggravated incident of teacher using too much force which led to this. You pulled him by the collar?? hmhmh
holding by collar equals hit with stick in head??? You all don’t know what teachers have to deal with everyday. You approach a child who is upset very nicely… Teacher: Student A what is the problem.
Student A: You self doh tell me noffing in your moda abcdefg. I just getting a gun and killing all of all you in that vwxyz place…” Security and principal called. Student A: Doh touch me my broda. Doh touch me. I not in all you man likle boy scene you know… Real scenario
Tiny! What on earth is your problem! Teacher was assistin security to get student to the office!!! You really think we teachers instigate trouble!!!! Tiny!!!! Woy!!! come and teach grammar school!!! Come then open your pipe! Till then keep it closed!
In my days at high school do you think any student could have done that nonesense? I think these miscreants who are uninterested in school are only cluttering the system. You putting hand on teacher and you still enrolled? Man in the good old days of Mr. Edwards at St.A.H.S That youngster done get expelled plain and simple….How can you raise your hand on your teacher? eh
YOu can’t just expel. It MUST be approved by the ministry.
And there in lies the problem
Den teachers is retarded de teacher hit de man how much big toMp we tell de next Sid of de story
Were you there idiot to say that the teacher hit the student shut the hell up
It is apparent that you are friends with this young criminal, you were sent to school to learn, you simply get there at 8:00 am sit in the class open your book listen to the teacher and learn go have your snack then repeat the first steps till 1:00pm what so hard about that. School is not for violence its for education if you guys want to be violent why don’t you just leave?
are u implying that a teacher is “retarded” lol well thats a first. and please if u have a point in order for u not to look so dumb….use proper english….if i were the teacher idda tomp you for not learning to talk and write properly.
lolololol…….and tiny turn bad

LOL!!!
you definitely need to go back to primary school with that spelling!
I pity you. You are obviously an illiterate. But for your information the teacher did not strike the student. Get your facts and education in tact before making comments
it looks like u was there? but even if the teacher hit the student? at his position- i believe the student was probably disturbing the class or something to that sort. and the teacher has the right because children these days are so rude and what not.. shame on you who continue to give DGS a bad name… may the lord be with you teacher
my boy..even if wat u sayin is tru..am sure the big tomp did not cause the student to lose blood or pay $500 on a scan….. and Mr. Winston would never do that to a student!
Do you have a son or daughter attending some secondary or Primary school? With that kind of attitude displayed anonymous no wonder what happenned to Teacher Fari! With parents like you, then children will continue to disrespect since you as a parent teach them to be disrespectful to authority. Those are displayed from the kind of comments coming from supposedly adults.
not one minister came and denounce that kind of violence towards the teacher, but you would hear them talking about how unfortunate and they will work hard to catch the people that robbed the tourist.
servants will remain servants
and the worse ting i think d honourable minister has a daughter in 5th form in that school…. so he should be well informed of the way those students behaving in that school… drugs, crime, violence –
doctor b, sometimes we really need to think before we speak.. as i said earlier eveything cannot be about politics and those ministers.. and are u sure they did not assist in investigating the matter? u guys just sit there an be so ignorant.. shut the hell up
and this fari winston is a past d.g.s student also… details still seem sketchy but whatever the reason… students shouldn’t attack teachers… i doubt any right thinking teacher will attack a student in the first instance…
UNIVERSAl SECONDARY EDUCATION!!!! that is the biggest culprit. Overcrowded classrooms with unruly kids. As you stop one to your right, the left and center running wild. Peer pressure. They come how they want, when they want. Grammar School is not the grammar school of the 80s & early 90s’. The kids are ill equipped to absorb the subject matter, if you survey most of their homes, completely broken families, fight for survival and who gets to deal with all that TEACHERS. NOBODY in EDUCATION wants to hear reinstate JSP. Everybody wants to shove projects and deadlines, they have FAILED the kids, so now teachers backside paying for it. It is so sad to see a child in a class 15 years old in 1st form just doubling and waiting to be kicked out in summer?
Ministry of Education is the breeding ground for delinquent youth. They know they can’t be kicked out before age 16 so they warm benches and give you hard time. ALCOHOL, DRUGS WEAPONS and PORN are the thing of the day.Parents for the most part tell you leave their child alone flat out. Imagine sending a note home for parent that you want to see him or her regarding their childs perfomance. The child is an adorable student but failing miserably and the mother puts a note back in the childs bag in a sealed envelope
” BEECH PLEAZE WHERE DO I GET MONEY TO COME TO ROSEAU. TEACH AND DONT DO NOT CALL ME..”
The poor child has no idea what is written, can we not appreciate the task teachers have ahead of them?
What about those who come with the sole intention of giving the teacher maypwee….I wish there was a love button for that comment
Students have NO right to do teachers these things, but, I will say, I taught Fari Winston at RBS (Roseau Boy’s School…and that’s all I am saying
alas… my favourite teacher.. hold on strong sir
my favourite teacher to wiii
medical services SHOULD be free for situations like that……injury on the job
come on….the teacher NEEDS the scan immediately.
Lord Almighty
I can’t believe that a teacher employe by the state was denied medical care at the PMH because he did not have the money to pay for a CT scan, all they had to do is take the guy information and let him sign a document agreeing to pay the bill as soon as he get his salary which is peanuts is the island, shame shame shame,
@ ineedfree, What you talking about nuh, NURSES, who are taking care of SICK people HAVE TO PAY FOR ALL THEIR MEDICAL EXPENSES. Things are really hard in this country, the syst
em that you work in doesnt care two about you…
nonsense! things are hard and that is exactly why it should be free!! atleast giv him a deadline to pay back!
SO DEY prefer d man die. i cannot believe dat. so nobody cannot help d man with d scan. alas
look a kind of a count wiii
shameful

I think that if the teacher is a member of the Dominica Public Service Union, then the DPSU and the Dominica Teachers Union should come forward and meet the entire cost of the scan for the young teacher. And just in case he is not, then they shoudl still pay for the scan for the young man…. on humanitarian grounds (sure they have some loose funds around).
Last week Friday at about 1:00 pm I was one of several winesses to a “ladje kool-wosh” (stone-throwing incident) between some male DGS students, some walking down Valley Road and the others over the Botanic Gardens wall. But we have to remember that it’s a smal minority that are misbehaving and bringing down the name of he school, knowing that they wont get expelled “just like dat”.
I have heard many horror stories from Dominica; I have heard of so many instances in Dominica, where people are in critical need for medical attention, including special tests that are available and the hospital refuses to grant the service before money is paid. What a dan shame! Here in America, once you go in to the hosepital for emergency, hospitals cannot refuse to give anyone medical attention whether you black, white, yellow, broke, no insurance, legal or illegal. And mark you emergency does not mean you get a bad cut and you bleeding to death eh. If you feel a pain in you leg, or a bad head ache, once you go thru Emergency they have to take care of you. But in Dominica it seems like you will be dying, but the hospital will be asking for money before they look at you.
Concerning the teacher, I use to be one for 4 yrs in Dominica, and I could not imagine a student attempting to do that to me (in the early 90s). But I heard things have changed a lot- a lot of teachers don’t respect students, and students don’t respect teachers. I wish the teacher a speedy recovery, and please hospital be humane! Give the teacher the service he needs.
Teachers are not given the respect they deserve – That’s why I like Dice’s song.
They paying for Ministers to fly to Martinique but can not provide a local scan for a teacher?? What is going on here?
the school should have paid for the expenses of the scan.. i mean $500? the skol shud have that kind of money. and even though they arent responsible for the attack, they should pay for the scan because he was attacked “on the job”… Work and safety regulations act
why was this student behaving badly towards the teacher? how did this debacle started? what should a teacher do when students get violent. this is not good for teachers and for the school on a whole.
If students want to behave like adults in school then they must be treated like adults. The teacher need to make a report to the police so student can be charged for assault.
what lead to this fight? give all the details….you can’t leave out any details..cause it will be unfair
Details will make the story much more interesting>>> … As far as i know, the student is not a mad man. Teachers need to respect students and themselves in and out of school.
Are you saying the student is right cause he was disrespected? If so if his parents disrespects him would it be ok for him to react so?
Irrespective of what the teacher may have done or said the STUDENT HAVE TO HAVE RESPECT FOR THE TEACHER AT ALL TIMES.
This situation is as a result of Universal Secondary Education. Some of these kids cant even read but they are in high school.I suggest lets go back to JSP and then if they are not cut for academics then we do trade.
I admire those teachers those young kids that are trying their best to educate the next generation..but I could have never been a teacher for that story would have been written differently.
Whereas teachers, as mentors, do indeed need to have a sense of respect for themselves as well as their students, this is a sad day for respect for authority in our land. Back in the day, respect for authority was the norm. Today it seems like authority has to respect the ‘rights’ of those they supervise – even the law seems hell bent on respecting and guarding the “rights” of criminals more than that of law-abiding citizens. As the local singer aptly says “everything is back to front … etc., etc.”
I honestly believe it is as “close” as u know NOT as far as u know bcuz u know nothing about Grammar School and what teachers and students alike face from some hooligans who attend that school on a daily basis. Parents are to be blamed for these children. They cannot control 12, 13, 14, 15 yr olds and they send them to school for teachers to take care of them, what u expect? The said student comes to school when he is not suspended just to roam the school yard and bully the poor little first formers. Have a heart, u are not even saying students should respect teachers,u are saying it the other way round.I hope ur children will be schooled at home.We must watch our words especially when we are not the ones directly invoved in the situation.
yes Bombayie the student is NOT mad , HE IS PLAIN OLE WICKED n in his good senses! THis is not the first incident where our teachers have been attacked by students! The said student is in n outta school due to suspensions for bad behavior, disrespect etc.. u name it! GET UR BLASTED FACTS STRAIGHT . u worse dan d chile! We teachers do respect ourselves n students. WE ARE NOT THE ENEMIES. The badly brought up children r their own enemies. we are there to guide n teach not work miracles with children who acts like they are posessed! CHECK URSELF!
@ bombayie
You read the story. Teachers could get impatient with disobedient children. Parents also get impatient. If you were disobedient to your parents and they were impatient with you, would you harm them or anyone else for that matter?
This gave the student no reason to injure the teacher. No one in his/her right mind would even consider doing something like that to another person and by no means a teacher.
If the student is not mad, he has a severe problem and a mental one. He needs to see a psychiatrist.
If this student had respect for his parent(s), he would have respect for the teacher. He may also have a problem at his home.
tiny… u seem hellbent on supporting only the kids. ure not in the fire
Does it really matter what led to the fight. Infact there should not have been a fight.
This young man uses this type of violence to solve a problem now, what will he do when his is older. He cant claim he did it on the spur of the moment and was not thinking, because he had time to go and get a weapon.
He should be expelled.
true dat inno dem grammar school children too ignorant(not all eh)…. some bad children does just spoil the rest of grammar shool name !!! i feddop
u want dem man? the boy go n voleh a jay money from children bag during break so mr.winston go n get him to bring him in d office n he start acting up so the security guard cum n help..so dey hold him but he escape n cum back n try to hit d security guard but he ducked n it hit mr.winston instead…now u got ur details! happy??
This is what is wrong with our society. So you thing that if we know ALL the facts then we will find this action justifiable? Totally ridiculous!
This is the result of the decay of the moral fabric of our society and the lack of respect for authority. If the student felt wronged he could have followed the proper channel to resolve it. Violence is not the answer!
AHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHhhhhhhhhhhhhh magway sahhhhhhhhh
Teachersssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssss Hold Strong.
Back then teachers used to be looked up to as mentors and you had crushes on them.
So it is now nuh? Moda Ration in Poland.
