DPSU calls for swift action on alleged DGS teacher attack

The wound received by the DGS teacher

The Dominica Public Service Union (DPSU) the representative body of teachers at the government-owned Dominica Grammar School (DGS), is calling for swift action to deal with a matter where a student is alleged to have used a stick and struck a male teacher on his head.

Fari Winston, a teacher at the DGS for over five years told Dominica News Online (DNO) that on Tuesday (February 14), he tried to apprehend a student who reacted violently towards him.

“He grabbed my collar and when I released him, he went for a piece of wood with a nail in it when he came back he struck me with it on my head.” Winston recounted.

He told DNO that he feels “very hurt” about the incident and does not have words to describe the episode.

“This is the worst that I have seen and trust me I have seen a lot from all the schools, I am concerned about the state of security at the school for teachers,” he stated.

Winston received seven stitches to his head and recalled that he was also bleeding through his nose and was forced to return to the hospital for further medical attention and was asked to take a CT scan for which he has no money.

“The situation is grave…..I was asked to take a CT scan after bleeding today through my nose and experiencing dizziness at school, the scan cost EC$500.00 and I have no money and no one at the hospital is prepared to assist saying it must be paid before the scan is done,” he said with a sigh.

Meanwhile DPSU General Secretary Thomas Letang has advised the teachers to sit in the staff room and demand a meeting with education officials.

“I have advised them that they need to inform the principal that they need to meet education officials to discuss the matter and that tomorrow morning (February 16, 2012) when they come to work; they do not enter the classroom,” the trade union leader said.

“I have advised them to go to the staffroom and unless that requested meeting is held, they should not go to their classroom. I want the teachers to be on safe ground in their actions,” Letang said.

He said that from what he was learning, students are behaving in an unruly manner daily at the DGS, and security persons are complaining that it is difficult for them and kids are getting out of hand and threatening teachers.

“When parents are called the support is not always forthcoming. The situation is serious and grave, teachers are uncomfortable and the ministry needs to seriously intervene now before it further escalates,” the DPSC General Secretary stated.

Letang told DNO that it was too early to speak of industrial action.

However he urged the Ministry of Education “to let common sense prevail” and see that the teachers are allowed to function under more secure conditions.

“Teachers say they are frightened and I am hoping that the PTA, Teachers, Police and all stake holders will come (together) and deal with the matter because it is definitely getting out of hand. Teachers are being threatened daily and are afraid and say they just can’t function in that environment,” Letang said.

This is a direct result of universal secondary education. I am deeply saddened that the school i attended is in such a state. The D.G.S of old had “cildren”who were comitted to learing cuz they began preparing for high school before at common entrance level. Now prepared or not they get into Grammar school what do we expect. in times of Mr. Felix Wilson that could of never never never happen. Over the years education officals have changed the system so much, moving it closer to that of the U.S and away from the britisg standard. The irony of this is the universites in the states Eg CUNNY SUNNY and MSU offer us here scholarships because our educational system was of a higher standard than theirs. Bring us back to the saying too many cooks spoil the bouyon. We are presantly reaping the seeds of a system sabatoged by these so called educational officals who are more intreasted in politics than the development of generation coming. Compare the government schools and the private see the difference.

Tomorrow the Minister of Ed and his minions will come out and sing the praises of Universal Secondary Education, where students that don’t even know their Abc’s are sitting in a High School class room depriving others from a first class education.

What is happening at DGS? We all know… the U.S.E. is failing our children… There is a system in place at DGS to corral troublemakers and slow learners into special , remedial “T” classrooms; the “T” refers to technical but how many technical subjects or training are being delivered to these students who basically choose to spend their days disrupting or even avoiding their classes? These students are frustrated not because they cannot learn but because they are not what you would call “academically strong”, the education system in Dominica lacks the support to sustain USE… but as long as certain people choose to ignore that fact students will continue to fail and the situation at DGS which is repeated at a lot of the other High Schools in Dominica will soon become the norm… we’ll be mimicking the US school with metal scanners and full time security force.

To those naysayers that continue to promote USE … take a look around you. How many students who have entered High School through USE make it beyond 1st , 2nd or 3rd form or without repeating at least 2 times or even more? What is the success rate? It’s not the students who achieve 7,8 or 9 ones at CXC who can be the model for the USE because Dominican students have traditionally done well at external examinations… going back to the years before USE there was always an Island Scholar with students achieving high grades … It’s not the top 10 that supports a system like that … because schools will not allow student to sit CXC subjects that they do not exhibit an aptitude for so the results are flawed … There are 5th formers who will not sit any CXC subjects or maybe just 1 or 2 to save their parents the cost.

Not to worry though every child will get to sit down in a high school classroom whether they learn or do not learn… I dare ask – who cares?

I do and no I’m not a teacher but my sister is and in the past I have tutored young students and I have friends who teach. More importantly I have watched my brother, who was among the first year to be granted USE struggle to make it through High School where he is currently in his final and 7th year. Someone might argue that maybe he is stupid but I know that his frustration at school (DGS) ended at 3rd from (after repeating his first 2 years) when he was introduced to Agriculture and Woodwork; along with Math these are the 3 subjects in which he continuously achieves A & B+ marks.

The provision of technical subjects and life skills training modules as conducted by the Youth Development Division would serve well to be introduced to the High Schools from the first year to encourage students to identify their talents at the earliest… and hopefully lead to the production of more balanced and better behaved students … reducing their frustration and curbing youth violence!

Why have not the child told his side of the story??

There are three sides…. the teacher’s side, the student side and the truth!

I am not condoning what the child did, but these days we can’t tell teacher from student in the classroom except by the clothes that they wear.

On the street these teachers, drink , smoke and socialize with the same children.

A boundary was crossed sometime before and some teachers allow their students to disrespect them.

There are so many things which are wrong with this incident that occurred at the D.GS. First of all, I would like to categorically say that our people are some of the most foolish, egoistic, sententious and haughty people that occupy the face of this earth.Ninety percent of them are affirmed jack-assess. Included are all those who profess to have academic accomplishments. They are worst than those who do not have an education because they believe that they are better than those who do not have one, but in reality, their lack of exposure to the international life have made them inexperience to life and how things are done. Shame on the Government, shame on the medical personnel. Our people are uncaring, unloving, unkind, stupid, hypocritical, bias, have no goodness in their hearts, do not believe in equality and justice. We claim to be godly, but we hate people, believe in judging, tremendously envious, ignorant and arrogant. If you would rather have one of your people die because of $500 dollars, it tells me the level of malice and callousness.
It does not matter who you are in America, if something like that happen, all your family has to do is signed a consent letter and you are under the scan within an hour. This union should be banned, and a new one should be implemented in it’s place.
The principal should be fired for incompetence. The student should be charged for assault, and expelled and a zero tolerance policy must be implemented in place to ensure that this never happens again. How do we expect to prosper and produce productive citizens when we tell people it is good to hate gay people, it is alright for a husband to beat and disrespect his wife. That it’s alright for a man to be committing adultery, it is alright for incest to go unpunished, it is alright for men to abuse their children both sexually and physically. It is alright for you to get a job not because you are more qualified than your competitor, but you are getting it because someone favor you due to friendship or name. It is alright to drink alcohol and chop people up with cutlasses. It is alright to hate our brothers and sisters who go overseas to learn a different way of living. All those things, plus our leaders being thieves are why those things are happening in lovely Dominica. The land is good, but the people are not. We need to sent them all to the States for two years then ask them to return. I guarantee you that they will begin to think differently.

The principals may play a part in the social structure of the schools, but let’s not make them entirely culpable. I was at DGS when Mrs. Jeanjacques and Mr. Wilson reigned and the school was still at the top. The issues came when we reformed the Education System on the island. People think JSP was a bad idea; it wasn’t! It worked! Students who were not academically proficient, got the opportunity to hone their academic and life skills and were made ready for high school level. Today, we have all types of students packed into the same classroom. Some are being stifled because their academic levels are much higher, other students are being left behind and then they act out. We need to revamp our education system, and if protesting, which is our democratic right, is the best option to having our voices heard, then let’s do that. Students who are protesting for better treatment of their teachers, and for improved academic expectations should be listened too. They are the future. Let’s get serious fellow Dominicans about our future :) God Bless!

I cannot believe that there are some Dominicans making excuses for this kind of behavior .
Wicked, lazy, self absorbed, irresponsible parents are the cause. I’m 25 and to this day I can’t even think of the idea of giving “back chat” to my mother or any adult… I was raised to respect authority and my elders and that things can be handled without violence…

Stop blaming everybody for what’s going on … it’s all a result of terrible parenting!

AMAZING how we blaming the youth like they just suddenly get this attitude on their own. Something must be WRONG in our society when a thing like this can happen. We need to find out what it is instead of talking about some abstract group called “the youth”. They are children— OUR children. So something must be wrong somewhere in our homes or our churches or our schools.Something must be wrong.

What about the principal of the school? If the principal is not strict on the children from the time they enter the school yard, what is going on right now is exactly what you get. Simeon Joseph was the best principal for grammar School, and the parents and some of the teachers found that he was too strict so he was transferred. You could ever see this happening under the watch of Celia Nicholas (DCHS) or Andra Christain (SMSS)? NEVER!!!

Again Dominica Education system need to check the need of its population. Time and time again they refuse to hire professionals because they claim they do not have money to pay them. So this is the result of that myth. Many persons are misplaced in positions because the administrators fail to see the need of the schools. I have some friends who return to Dominica as professionals in the education field but were rejected by administrators because they do not necessarily wants professionals who may pose a threat to them. which is crazy, the focus should be on the students and not on administrators and their titles.
There needs to be a shaking up in that education monopoly in Dominica. The same people making decisions for donkey years with no results. What is it that Dominica really wants for its children? Are Dominicans satisfied knowing that persons who has the power to change the system is deliberately not doing so? How much money does it take to hire a few professionals to be placed in troubled schools? It is about time that each High School has a behavior specialist and/or psychologist. It is time, the time is now.

This is a very sad situation. it’s just sad now that the good pupils will have to pay for the bad eggs. Do we have a juvenile center in Dca? I think that will make a huge change, we need to find a way to segregate the bad eggs from the future hopefuls. At the same time presenting the opportunity for both groups to develop into civil members of society. The g/ment needs to condemn such an act, i think as teachers we need to show them how significant our role is to a country’s d/ment. Shut down, lock down, I guess that will the attention of those incharge. What does the loud mouth minister of Edu. have to say about that. We talk to much in this country, what we need is action.

Even if Farai roughed you up that’s no reason to retaliate in such a manner. Everyone knows the feeling “someone hits you or embarrasses you, you want to keep your dignity or not lose face so you fight back”. But understand this Parents, Teachers, Elders are OFF LIMITS all need to be shown respect at all times, yes they can be wrong but thats not for you to resolve, that’s how u grow up to be a man and thats how u will want to be treated when u become older. The people siding with the boy I assume are younger kids who will somehow identify with him, just think about this, if you are that disrespectful now, and are so more and more everyday, how bad do u think it will be when you become parents or get older? I believe kids are becoming mature at an earlier age so ponder on this, if you all don’t realize and put an end to this you will be the cause of your own demise.

So what of bad parenting? I’ll be the first to say there are parents who try their utmost and children allow others to influence them. Still parents cannot abdicate their responsibility and expect the school to correct it. I hearover and over that “it takes a community to raise a child” but my observation show that it is “parents” and not the children who wants noone to correct their children. In many of these instances I believe we are reaping what we have shown, the problem stems from home.

The child is down right disrespectful to lay hand on the teacher. No excuses should be made for him. but while we are there analysing the situation don’t you think it would be best to carry out a scientific and strategic survey on all stakeholders to note their shortcomings and strengths? We should start with the principal of the school.

      February 16, 2012

I don’t think the principle should be held completely accountable. Jeanjacques was there in the 90s and early 2000s and the school was still on top. The school started falling apart when the Universal Secondary Education (admit all) program was enacted. Since DGS was a government school, it had to absorb all types of students. The school population went from 700 around 2002 to n1100 in 2010. So now you have more students of varied learning abilities packed into one class, and unfortunately, some students are left behind and may act out since no one’s paying attention to them. Let’s not also forget about the parents too. We don’t hold families to the same levels that we used to-parents need to find out what’s going on with their kids, hold children responsible to excelling and behaving properly; and discipline them before they develop bad ways. I remember a time when if a teacher beat a student for bad behavior, that child when he or she came home, would get a double portion of blows (I was one of those kids). Do that today, and parents want to beat up teachers without listening to what their child did. Because in their eyes, their child can do no wrong. We expect our teachers to be educators, parents and more. But when the teacher to student ratio is 1 to 30 students, how much can we expect them to do? They aren’t super human or gods. There are so many issues here for this failure that we need to take into consideration. Let’s not attribute blame to one person because she can’t do everything. I’m sure if she had a magic wand, she would wish all kids to be smart with good behavior. But that’s not how it works unfortunately. All we can do now is hope and pray that parents, students and our society as a whole realize what’s wrong before we fall into further disrepute.

Me either I just can’t believe that’s the school I went to. Where are the days when we had healthy fear and respect for our parents and teachers? When I was growing up you were scared to report incidents of disrespect of your teacher to your parents cause you getting more licks at home and have go back to school and apologise..smh..that’s the type of society we building..

This is outrageous, and ridiculous! Hear a teacher I will assume was deliberiately injured on his job in a public institution, which is supposed to be a government owned secoundary School, he got his head bashed in, bleeding from his nose as a result of a blow inflected to his head while he is in the employment of the Government.

He is injured goes to the hospital, bleeding from his nose, informed by hospital authorities that a Cat Scan is need , however he must pay the five hunderd dollars prior to getting medical attention to what may obvious to a doctor, and not a quack, that such injury could well be life treatening!

    What is wrong with Dominicans?

Are we so,stupied, so damn backward, and so politically bias that even doctors does not know when they are negleting their duties, and risking the life of people.

This man got injured on his job, regardless of the circumstance the government is responsible for the man medical care right now. What happens to Workers Compensation, Has the government no insurance coverage on the civil servant in our country?

What kind of crap is this?

You see we run off our mouth in the country, concentrating on who is the bigger thief, but the simple things which attention should be give to, such as holding government and private employers responsible for the health of the worker as in this case, I doubt there is any law covering such.

This should not be, if the man is bleeding from his nose, you can be sure his brain sustain a considerable amount of damage, how can any one demand money before treatment in a case like that?

This is baloney, it is a disgrace.

What is the purpose of people in the Diaspora donating to the hospital?

They do it so that the needs of the citizens of the country can be met, so why was this man deny the services of the CT?

He got hurt on his job, his employer the government, the ministry of Education should be held responsible for his injuries. If I was in his place, I would sue the government for damages!

Only in Dominica this crap can happen and no one is held accountable!

Winston alternative is to file a law suit against the ministry of Education, the Hospital, a personal Law suit against the treating doctor, if he was bleeding from his nose he should be admitted into the hospital, immediately and given the CT, before his head was sutured.

That is elementary in medicine , we are dealing with a bunch of quacks in Dominica calling themselves doctors. They can only work in Dominica, where anything goes, how many people in Dominica lost their lives all due to the incompetence of peopleplaying doctor.

I have a friend, who was a teacher in Dominica, she told me that one day while she was outside teaching her class, a cricket hard ball, like the ones used on First Class Cricket, and Test Cricket, came out of nowhere, struck her in her face, as a result of that this lady is in her fifty’s living in Canada, she eventually lost her vision in that eye, while it cost her former employer the government of Dominica not one single cent.

I know she is reading this, and if she wish she can give the details of her injury.

That is not the way it should be at all!

Too much advantage is taken of the poor in our country. If Winston who is a Secondary School teacher does not have five thundered dollars, he is not going to have five thousand dollars either.

So how much is his monthly salary: so you see why the politicians must steal in Dominica?

All of those so called lawyer’s in Dominica who like to take cases pro bono should think about this case, for even if there are no industrial, and worker compensation law’s in Dominica, this might be a case which could set a precedence in Dominica, and Dominica in particular, because I am aware that there are worker compensation law’s on the other islands of the Caribbean.

I was involved in a Worker Compensation case in Antigua.

I was punched in my face, by a coworker, I did not fight back, but by the time it was over, I had enough money to invest into a big, big business.

We need to change the way business are conducted in Dominica. Any doctor, or hospital administrator who would demand money from a patient bleeding from his nose after receiving a head injury, and letting him go untreated, is a damn fool, there is no excuse for that!

There are people who sometimes for one reason other bleed from their nose, it might be caused by broken blood vesicle, hypertension, or a borken nose, but in this case the qucks at the hospital should recognize that the bleeding was caused by the injury he sustained.

Not wishing bad for anyone, but one of these days somebody will die at the hands of these incompetent people at the PMH and then when they get a lawsuit they will understand to stop the discrimination with regards to people health. On the other hand, Mr. Winston if you can read this, you are sitting on a fortune. Somebody needs to be held responsible, and since they won’t want to hold the child responsible, then you have his parents, the principal, the MOE, and by and large the Govt of Dominica. Take your pick, you can choose one or all. Make them pay the hard way.

To the Teacher, I hope you a speedy recovery! However, try to raise some money ie loan etc to get yourself proper medical attention. Then take legal action against the parents and the education establishment. No one should go to work and be attacked. To the boys parents, shame on you all! To the Ministry of Education, I can’t believe that no attempts has been made to support this teacher by way of payments for his medical expenses. There should have been some support mechanism already in place. We are no longer in the 1950s. Change with the times!

Dominica Grammar School was known as a school that excel in sport, Academic and other activities. What happen to these kids today. The primary objective here should be about achiving an education and pursuing your goals in life, not about abusing and attacking your educators who are trying their uttermost best so that you all become sucessful young strong proud black educated men and young women in a todays society . I’m so disappointed as to what we have adapted from the outer world.Let’s take back our school and focus into making a better future for our nation.

    February 15, 2012

For goodness sake! This is a High School! This is a preparation for either future studies in a College or University or for the work force. What is happening to the youth of today? This child is an evil child. Any child who could do this to a teacher of all or anyone for that matter must have an evil heart. He also needs the blessing and grace of God. He needs to be arrested and charged. Spare the rod, spoil the child.
When older adults of all hear of such a shocking happening, they cannot help but look back and say that times have indeed changed and in the schools. There was school discipline and the school children dare not misbehave. Worst yet, to hit and injure a teacher. Otherwise! You should know what I mean. This would never have occurred in my youth. Furthermore, teachers and parents cooperated then.
What is this am I reading? The teacher was not able to get a CT Scan because he did not have money and the hospital refused to be treated? Shame on the hospital authorities and also the government. This should never have happened. What if the teacher became worst and I hate to say what else? Who would be to blame for this?
DGS and government you need to take out insurance policies for your teachers or assist them and/or subsidize their insurance.
If teachers are wounded on school premises and by a student, you are required to pay for the treatment? You should have some funds allocated for this.
I do believe that the Prime Minister and/or Deputy should have been immediately notified when the teacher was refused treatment so that arrangement could have been made to have him treated.
TIME TO TAKE SERIOUS ACTION THAT ANOTHER ATTACK WILL NEVER RECUR. I have a message for the government AND ALSO FOR THE DGS HEADMASTER. DGS Headmaster, I hope you have some authority in disciplining those children and that they respect you as Head of the school. They should also respect all teachers with no exception. If they have failed in this respect, in no uncertain terms, they must be informed.
Prepare a directive about school discipline and disciplinary action. In simple words, what will occur to them should those school children breach it, either by expelling or suspending them. Read it out to the children and also arrange to give each of them a copy and to take home to their parents. Otherwise mail a copy to each parent. In addition, have a teacher, parent and pupil(s) meeting, be it collectively. This type of behaviour and in a High School for that matter must never recur.
The unruly children are putting DGS to shame. Consider how many DA nationals attended this high school, excelled, graduated and hold responsible positions and their rightful place in society and serve their country well including wherever they reside in the world. Surely, those children should know about it and emulate them for their future benefit.

Can you tell me what is the responsibility of the person who inflicted the wound or injury. The teacher should not be denied medical attention, but he has a right to seek compensation from the student and his parent/guardian for his injury.

Are you saying that, I as a tax payer should pay for the student and his disrupted behavior? Hell No. Let the teacher seek redress at the court should the student/parent/guardian fall to pay for the medical bills.

I am a student at dgs and it is a shame to see the level of disrespect for teachers at the school. Students curse continuously in teachers presence and the teachers cant do anything because they feel threatened. A teachers jaw has been broken by a student in the past. The school is drug infested and the population of 100 students is to big to handle. Parents barely show up for meetings. Lastly with all due respect but Ms Jean-Jacques cannot manage the school from a disciplinary standpoint. She is too soft and lenient with the children and this sets bad precedents. Children do so much wrong and get away with it. The younger teachers are really struggling and are really disrespected.

UMMM…isn’t this assault? Isn’t assault a crime in Dominica? Shouldn’t one press charges against an individual who has assaulted them? Shouldn’t the police after reviewing the evidence arrest a person charged with assault? Shouldn’t that individual appear before a magistrate?

When you’ve assaulted someone and inflict bodily shouldn’t the criminal be the one forced to pay the bill? If you don’t pay the bill, shouldn’t you be sent to jail? Shouldn’t the criminal be sued for not only medical portion of the bill but also emotional distress?

Just asking a few questions because it seem I’m in the twilight zone. I see people taking about closed down school and what not like thats really the most rational way of dealing with crimes like these.

Dominica the island hasn’t changed but Dominican standards on child up bringing has changed. Mothers and fathers making babies are shameful. I could never under any circumstance do that to any teacher. My mother would never have tolerated that. Today I would be walking with a limp if I had tried naything like that. Thats why alot of people don’t want to teach at black schools or be around young black kids. Just an exmple of their parents. My mother would bring inside of the police station to have me arrested before she would allow me to go home.

Incompetent ministry filled with incompetent people, incompetent magistrate, Incompetent attorney general and prosecutors, incompetent PM, incompetent lawyers, incompetent hospital system, incompetent parents, incompetent police. Aye aye I just see Dominica and she’s heading down the drain!

      February 17, 2012

      To answer your questions;
      1. Yes assault is a crime in Dominica. However Mr. Winston would have to make a formal report to the police or give consent for charges to be preferred. After investigations, the following cahrges could be preferred- Assualy, Battery, Wounding, Wounding with intent, Attempted murder

      2. Yes the person can be arrested but that depends on the investigating officer and his supervisors. If he is simply charged with the lesser crimes like battery or assault the he can also be charged, read his rights and released pending a court date when he will be served a summon to appear.

      3. The police can arrest for any crime committed in their presence or a warrant have to be gotten unless they are in immediate pursuit of an escaped prisoner. However, if this student was arrested by a civillian (other teacher etc) and turned over to the police then this arrest would have been legal.

Just a little help with legal matters

This is a total shock, i can’t believe it. First of i think they really need to sort the country out and put stuff straight. Based on a comment i read about ” kids usually respect teachers who are respectable towards them” yeah fair enough but then again we go to school to learn and not for teachers to be kind to us,they are here to do their job. so what if a teachers speaks badly let it slide whats the point getting all mad , what these idiots kids do not realise is that in the real working world things are much harder than this and your going to meet tons of mean people out there and there will always be people who won’t like you truth is in life not everyone is going to like us. These kids obviously don’t get education at home cause some of their parents back them up just in the way that they speak and some make their kids believe that no matter what a teacher has to respect you! But hey, we are teenagers we somehow have to respect our superiours whether we like it or not! that’s just the way it is. I’m a teenager myself. I think teachers need more respect from the kids, even though sometimes they say mean stuff or piss us off that’s nothing in life!! Those kids need to realize that they are here to prepare them for the world of work and get an idea of how things are going to be, & ensure they have a basic education level cause majority of them need it because that’s all they will get due to some of their families financial status ( not saying all of them are poor). They need to say thankgod they get to have an education and go to school unlike kids who don’t even know what education is!! I think all this is due to the fact most dominicans are just negative towards their own selves and country thats why it never advances! All they care about is partying and such, think they know it all , when help is being offered they have to say something negative! Parents need to educate their kids otherwise they wont get far believe it or not! and then they say the teachers don’t teach them well , like shut up atleast your kid is getting an education! All they do is hate on each other and think they are the baddest, first thing they go for in an argument is a weapon? Like grow up seriously. Their mentality is really poor. and i’m not being judgemental or anything it’s based on things i’ve seen whilst i’ve been there. And i’m not aiming everything i say on the whole population but majority of them. I also think that the goverment needs to pay for the teacher’s medical needs , there shouldn’t be no buts! Start doing your job!

@ former teacher …from reading your comment i came to the conclusion that there are more then just 2 or 3 problem kids….seem like it is a major problems in schools……so much so that it caused you to leave the teaching profession….you even think that metal detectors should be installed and it is not just the male students …THE FEMALE STUDENTS ARE JUST AS DIFFICULT…………waw….so what do you suggest….just expel these kids and mess things up for them permanently? THEY WILL later turn into criminals and it will be the a bigger problem for the country THE PROBLEM IS Parents IF YOU FAIL TO ADMIT THE PROBLEM the viscous cycle will continue…………….THINGS ARE ONLY GOING TO GET WORST

The ministry of Education needs to revaluate the services which it provides. The school counselors are never available because they are limited to an entire district and have to travel in between schools. AS for the Special Education Department I understand that it is a one woman department who cannot possible serve the students of Dominica all by herself. With a Special education department, children with behavioral problems would be given special attention thus reducing this kind of problems. Anxiety, anger, frustration, hunger, etc etc etc can lead to something as big as this. In this modern age of technology Dominica Education System needs to step up and serve the population. It is time to meet the needs of the students regardless of what their parents did or did not do. It is a crying shame that this has to happen to a teacher. Has this child shown any visible signs of needing attention, and just be considered bad or rude? Come on, away with this antiquated style. The ministry of Education needs a fresh awaking, new tools and any one who can understand the plight of today’s society and children.

    1. Parents your problem child is NOT your problem alone
    2. The DGS has close to 1 000 students
    3. There are two separate buildings and getting from one to the next is stress. To get from the old wing to a class on the top floor and to walk from the old wing to police station takes the same amount of time.
    4. Mr C.E.O you, the ACEO and the SEO were not paying a “normal visit “ to the school..but then again we don’t know what you consider to be normal.
    6. Marijuana on the school compound is a daily thing. Do you think the teachers on a daily basis can do searches? It takes time to do that and those students involved find ingenious places to hide them. Now when the school conducts searches the teachers put themselves at RISK.
    6. In about 6 months time, CSEC (CXC) results will be out, and the DGS is not expected to feature highly. Then the powers that be on Cornwall Street will bray and give kudos to all those other schools who will do well. Here’s what they will not tell you:
    (a) The DGS registered about 220 students to write CSEC – no other school in DA registered that number.
    (b) That the school was forced to register students who do not know their A…from their elbow-when the teachers told Mr. Hyacinth that the students in the 5T’s could not write CSEC, that wasn’t his concern, he said register them and let them write the exams, Many of those students especially in the T’s are not interested. Their only concern is to smoke, drink, come to school and cause problems.
    (c) The parents paid money to register them knowing fully well that some of them come to school with empty bags.
    7. The school already knows that this year’s results will be dismal. Subjects, which over the years have received 100% pass at CSEC, are not expected to do so this year, because the school had to register tout moon
There’s so much more that could be written. Now review team you have work to do… Oh oh no it’s the investigating team, Call it what it is; you people are conducting an investigation and not a review as you claim.

All of you who are there shedding air should shut up and put your there for a short while and see for yourselves. You all are the ones supporting such behaviours until it reaches home then you will call for help. As a teacher I KNOW FIRST HAND THE KIND OF ENVIRONMENT THAT WE WORK IN ON A DIALY BASIS WITH NO SUPPORT FROM MINISTRY OF EDUCATION NEITHER PARENTS THEMSELVES. SOME OF THE PARENTS CANNOT EVEN CONTROL THEIR KIDS BUT THEY WANT US TO CONTROL THEM. IN THAT EDUCATION SYSTEM WE WORK AMONG SOCIOPATHS, DRUG ADDICTS, DRUG DEALERS, STUDENTS WHO HAVE BEEN TO PRISON FOR VIOLENT BEHAVIOURS AND THEY ARE ALLOWED TO BE BACK AT SCHOOL AMONG OTHER KIDS AND TEACHERS. THEY THREATEN TEACHERS, CURSE TEACHERS. GO TAKE A LOOK IN THE POLICE STATION AND SEE HOW MANY REPORTS ARE THERE FOR THREATS AGAINST TEACHERS, AND YOU ALL ARE OPENING YOUR MOUTHS AND TALKING SUCH IGNORANCE. IF IT WERE THE OTHER WAY AROUND THERE WOULD NOT BE WATER TO WASH THAT TEACHER AND HE WOULD BE AT HIS HOME. THE STUDENT ON THE OTHER HAND IS ALLOWED TO GO BACK TO SCHOOL AND SOMETIMES SEAT IN THAT SAME CLASS. WHAT MESSAGE ARE WE SENDING? LET ME TELL YOU ALL NOW, SAY THANK GOD FOR THE TEACHERS WHO ARE DEALING WITH THIS EVERYDAY BECAUSE NOT EVEN THE MINISTRY OFFICIALS WANT TO DEAL WITH THEM. HOW MANY OF THEM COME TO THE SCHOOL, THEY ARE NOT SEEN ON THE SCHOOL GROUNDS. WHEN LAST HAS MR. HYACINTH PUT HIS FEET AT THE SCHOOLS ESPECIALLY THIS ONE TO SEE WHAT IS HAPPENING. SOMETHING NEEDS TO BE DONE NOW! SEND A MESSAGE. YOU AL HAVE CREATED THE MONSTER DEAL WITH IT. DO NOT LEAVE YOUR TEACHERS IN THE MINE FIELD.

What a shame!! Let me, first of all, wish the teacher a speedy recovery. No teacher should have to suffer at the hands of students. Where has respect for adults and authority gone?

Secondly, why don’t teachers have health insurance. Teaching is a 24/7 job. Teachers are over worked and stressed out for very little compensation. I feel for this young teacher. After working at a secondary school for 5 years he cannot pay $500.00 for a scan. Is that how we take care of our professionals? Is that the situation we want our graduates to return to? MOTS, here’s another opportunity for us to partner together to set up a health insurance agency. For a small monthly fee we can cover all the teachers, nurses, and other public servants. We will expand to private sector workers and the self-employed if all goes well. Applications are accepted for the positions of clerical staff and 10 agents – one for each parish. Investors $dollar$ are welcome.

Finally, fellow teachers, as much as I feel your pain, you have no business “apprehending” students unless there is imminent danger to staff and other students. Physical contact with students is not advised. A word from the ……(afraid to say ‘wise’ to anger Francisco. Let’s just say ‘idiot’ instead. Right, Francisco?). Been there.

In a system where children are given far more protection than the teachers, we expect the youth to take advantage of that situation. Today’s teachers are not motivated in their jobs because of the lack of strong representation for their jobs.

But when we have students who do not have the necessary capabilities to perform academically at a high school level, being forced to do such, we end up in a system where there are frustrated and penned in. What we see here is simply an example of what happens in a system with no boundaries, and no way to deal with students who learn in different ways, and no way of separating them. The system is what has failed here. U.S.E needs a complete revision… and teachers need more protection.

    • Justice and Truth
      February 16, 2012

      @ Anonymous

You made some good points. I reside in Toronto. I recall reading in a newspaper, not all children are academically-inclined. If some are slow, incapable of studying and completing school, they may receive special schooling or they could also study for another job/career.
Children who have projected that they are not academically-inclined will be encouraged to pursue some other form of education and prepare for another career.
Dominica may not have this type of curriculum activity. Every one was not meant to be a doctor, engineer, etc. This is life and the make-of, of life. I am certain that God has arranged this. It does not mean that these children are not intelligent. God gave every one some degree of intelligence.
It appears that the Minister of Education will have to consider this and try to help those children in another manner. Some of them should not have been sent to high school. They may be forced to study and remain in school and they may be unhappy about it which results in an unhealthy situation as this. This is something all adults concerned should know and keep in mind.
The student who injured the teacher should receive counseling and quized, respectfully, about his lifestyle also at home to determine why he is unruly and injured the teacher. Underneath, he may be an angry and unhappy child/student. May he nor his parent(s) not blame the teacher who was performing his job. Does DA have a child psychologist who could interview and counsel such children? As I write ideas flow through my mind.

so sorry that this happen. when we want to bring the American style in our system, what do you expect. teachers have no right to punish children because the law say so. if the teacher had bit the hell off him we would hear story. parents are called and do not turn up to school. parents come to school and insult the principal, teacher when they are corrected, so what do we expect. change the law. when Mr Lockhart, Brother Jermain and many other tough principal they child would obey, but again we a leaving in the internet world, where children do what they want and no man jack there correct them, because their whole family on your back. Education Officials can’t do anything for that. They take drastic measures, they will blame someone. take him to court and let him pay for it.

    • Justice and Truth
      February 16, 2012

      @ young voter

Children are future adults. They should be taught and disciplined appropriately.
These types of ill-behaved children do not belong in such a school setting. I do believe that the school authorities should not be lenient towards them. Tough love should be practiced. DA should have a “boot camp” to send them to where they could learn good behaviour. This would change their ways.
The only resort is for the Police to arrest those students. It appears that they are juvenile delinquents who need to be incarcerated, receive counseling in no uncertain terms and hopefully to be rehabilitated. This probably would teach the parents and children something. Those parents who oppose school discipline and who support their misbehaved children, who do not support and encourage the teachers in the discipline of their children also need to receive discipline, at their age.
There are some bleeding hearts that will feel sorry for those children and soften up towards them. This is why disobedient children as this one will continue lawlessly and will never change. Some adults are to be blamed for this.

      February 16, 2012

      @ Met Yo

In bygone years it was not so. Times have changed. After I read that shocking story, I reminisced about my high school days and the strict discipline that children of that era received in school; no exception from their parents.
I also recall those days when the high schools authorities, the Convent High School, St. Mary’s Academy and Dominica Grammar School would hold teenage dances which took place in the afternoon (imagine) By 7:00 pm children were at their parents’ home. There were also “fairs” on a Sunday which the school children would also attend. We had so much, amicable and clean fun. Every one was well-behaved. High school students met others and became friends, some life-long ones. It is a pleasure to meet with them. As an adult, I view parental and school discipline to be an asset to all children, if they are obedient.
It appears that children of today are a different breed, if you know what I mean. Some do not accept discipline, be it from their parents or teachers. Since this is their attitude, they must be handled differently, with an iron rod of discipline and disciplinary measures.
I hope the Minister of Education reads the comments of all those who are shocked at this incident and have projected empathy for the injured teacher and other teachers and take note and do something about it. It is a serious matter. Immediate disciplinary action is necessary.
I recognize that there are good, well-behaved children. A few bad eggs among them could spoil the group’s reputation, give the others a bad name and disturb the peace in the school, as a few examples. I reiterate that something must be done about those badly behaved children who lack discipline and respect for the teachers and even their peers.

  148. Trouble Intended
    February 15, 2012

This is so troubling. We boast about the education we received as kids and it is a shame to hear of this type of violent towards those that are trying to help our kids. What is more troubling is the responses here.

What if teachers ask you to keep your unruly kids at home? Would that work for you? I say expel them and let them stay with their no good parents, that they can go ahead and beat up their own parents. This can only lead to much bigger crime related problems down the road.

What type of children go to that school? I wonder how did they complete elementary school? If they were unruly in elementary school, they should have been automatically disqualified from attending high school. It is as simple as that.
This type of behaviour should not be occurring in a school and a high school at that. Something is wrong with those children. They appear to be uncontrollable. If they are not disciplined and they refuse to obey, the Police should arrest them, charge them and they should be imprisoned. This may be the medicine and remedy they need to change their lawless mannerisms, if they ever do.
Do these children go to Church? If they do, they should know how to conduct themselves and have respect for the teachers.
On another note. What type of parents do they have and how were they nurtured? They are sadly lacking in discipline. Parents are responsible for the actions of their under-age school children. They should be held accountable.

Where has respect gone we have young parents who cant even controll themselves what do we expect the children to do. On the other hand the Goverment should have an insurance plan set up when an employee get hurt on the job they should be covered by that plan this young teacher went to the hospital and he didnt have the money to get a scan to save his life he was sent home this is ridiculous the Ministry of Education take a look at this advice

UNIVERSAl SECONDARY EDUCATION!!!! that is the biggest culprit. Overcrowded classrooms with unruly kids. As you stop one to your right, the left and center running wild. Peer pressure. They come how they want, when they want. Grammar School is not the grammar school of the 80s & early 90s’. The kids are ill equipped to absorb the subject matter, if you survey most of their homes, completely broken families, fight for survival and who gets to deal with all that TEACHERS. NOBODY in EDUCATION wants to hear reinstate JSP. Everybody wants to shove projects and deadlines, they have FAILED the kids, so now teachers backside paying for it. It is so sad to see a child in a class 15 years old in 1st form just doubling and waiting to be kicked out in summer?

Ministry of Education is the breeding ground for delinquent youth. They know they can’t be kicked out before age 16 so they warm benches and give you hard time. ALCOHOL, DRUGS WEAPONS and PORN are the thing of the day.Parents for the most part tell you leave their child alone flat out. Imagine sending a note home for parent that you want to see him or her regarding their childs perfomance. The child is an adorable student but failing miserably and the mother puts a note back in the childs bag in a sealed envelope

” BEECH PLEAZE WHERE DO I GET MONEY TO COME TO ROSEAU. TEACH AND DONT DO NOT CALL ME..”

The poor child has no idea what is written, can we not appreciate the task teachers have ahead of them?

I think that if the teacher is a member of the Dominica Public Service Union, then the DPSU and the Dominica Teachers Union should come forward and meet the entire cost of the scan for the young teacher. And just in case he is not, then they shoudl still pay for the scan for the young man…. on humanitarian grounds (sure they have some loose funds around).
Last week Friday at about 1:00 pm I was one of several winesses to a “ladje kool-wosh” (stone-throwing incident) between some male DGS students, some walking down Valley Road and the others over the Botanic Gardens wall. But we have to remember that it’s a smal minority that are misbehaving and bringing down the name of he school, knowing that they wont get expelled “just like dat”.

    • Me
      February 15, 2012

I have heard many horror stories from Dominica; I have heard of so many instances in Dominica, where people are in critical need for medical attention, including special tests that are available and the hospital refuses to grant the service before money is paid. What a dan shame! Here in America, once you go in to the hosepital for emergency, hospitals cannot refuse to give anyone medical attention whether you black, white, yellow, broke, no insurance, legal or illegal. And mark you emergency does not mean you get a bad cut and you bleeding to death eh. If you feel a pain in you leg, or a bad head ache, once you go thru Emergency they have to take care of you. But in Dominica it seems like you will be dying, but the hospital will be asking for money before they look at you.

Concerning the teacher, I use to be one for 4 yrs in Dominica, and I could not imagine a student attempting to do that to me (in the early 90s). But I heard things have changed a lot- a lot of teachers don’t respect students, and students don’t respect teachers. I wish the teacher a speedy recovery, and please hospital be humane! Give the teacher the service he needs.
Teachers are not given the respect they deserve – That’s why I like Dice’s song.

        February 15, 2012

Are you saying the student is right cause he was disrespected? If so if his parents disrespects him would it be ok for him to react so?
Irrespective of what the teacher may have done or said the STUDENT HAVE TO HAVE RESPECT FOR THE TEACHER AT ALL TIMES.

This situation is as a result of Universal Secondary Education. Some of these kids cant even read but they are in high school.I suggest lets go back to JSP and then if they are not cut for academics then we do trade.
I admire those teachers those young kids that are trying their best to educate the next generation..but I could have never been a teacher for that story would have been written differently.

Whereas teachers, as mentors, do indeed need to have a sense of respect for themselves as well as their students, this is a sad day for respect for authority in our land. Back in the day, respect for authority was the norm. Today it seems like authority has to respect the ‘rights’ of those they supervise – even the law seems hell bent on respecting and guarding the “rights” of criminals more than that of law-abiding citizens. As the local singer aptly says “everything is back to front … etc., etc.”

I honestly believe it is as “close” as u know NOT as far as u know bcuz u know nothing about Grammar School and what teachers and students alike face from some hooligans who attend that school on a daily basis. Parents are to be blamed for these children. They cannot control 12, 13, 14, 15 yr olds and they send them to school for teachers to take care of them, what u expect? The said student comes to school when he is not suspended just to roam the school yard and bully the poor little first formers. Have a heart, u are not even saying students should respect teachers,u are saying it the other way round.I hope ur children will be schooled at home.We must watch our words especially when we are not the ones directly invoved in the situation.

The said student is in n outta school due to suspensions for bad behavior, disrespect etc.. u name it! GET UR BLASTED FACTS STRAIGHT . u worse dan d chile! We teachers do respect ourselves n students. WE ARE NOT THE ENEMIES. The badly brought up children r their own enemies. we are there to guide n teach not work miracles with children who acts like they are posessed! CHECK URSELF!

        February 17, 2012

        @ bombayie

You read the story. Teachers could get impatient with disobedient children. Parents also get impatient. If you were disobedient to your parents and they were impatient with you, would you harm them or anyone else for that matter?
This gave the student no reason to injure the teacher. No one in his/her right mind would even consider doing something like that to another person and by no means a teacher.
If the student is not mad, he has a severe problem and a mental one. He needs to see a psychiatrist.
If this student had respect for his parent(s), he would have respect for the teacher. He may also have a problem at his home.

This is what is wrong with our society. So you thing that if we know ALL the facts then we will find this action justifiable? Totally ridiculous!

This is the result of the decay of the moral fabric of our society and the lack of respect for authority. If the student felt wronged he could have followed the proper channel to resolve it. Violence is not the answer!
