Eight Dominicans left jobless as DAPEX shuts down

looking-for-a-jobEight Dominicans are now without a job as the Dominica Agricultural Producers and Exporters Limited (DAPEX) shuts down.

Former employees said they have not been paid for four months and they are unsure what they should do next.

“We are being owed four months salaries, from July to October,” one of the former employees told DNO on Wednesday. “They let us go without a cent and we do not know yet when we will get paid and if we will get what is due to us.”

DNO understands that the former employees will get redundancy payments but they do not how much they will get of what is owed to them and how soon they will get it.

According to the former employee, a meeting was held between the company and shareholders on Monday (October 31). It was explained to the shareholders that the company was facing difficulties and was insolvent. During the meeting, Michel Williams was appointed liquidator.

Also on Monday, a meeting was held with employees and they were told that the liquidator would be taking over the company. The employees were told that they should return to work on Tuesday (November 1).

“So we went to work and had a meeting with the liquidator who explained the process of liquidation and we were told that DAPEX was closed effective Monday (October 31),” the former employee said. “Now for now, boom on our chest.”

She said the former employees have not received letters of termination.

“We asked about the letters on Monday during the meeting and we were told that we would get them on Monday coming,” she explained. “And look yesterday (November 1), we were told that’s it.”

She said the former employees do not feel good over the entire matter.

“We were not treated good,” she said. “You just cannot terminate employment just like that. We knew the winding up was coming, we knew that was the proposal from the board to the shareholders but it could have been done more amicably and a little more humane.”

In terms of monies owed to them, the former employees were told that the company had to pay off all outstanding income tax and social security, which is being owed for 12 months.

“Deductions were taken from our salaries but were not paid to social security and income tax,” the former employee claimed. “So they say that takes first priority. We are not sure when we will get all money owed to us.”

DNO will attempt to get a comment from the management of the now defunct company.

It’s time once again, to “Sousay Sel” in Skerrit’s banana republic. When that rude Baroness woman told Dominicans who do not agree with Skerrit to sousay sel, some of you thought it was a joke. We now know how serious she was. You keep voting for the same corrupt regime, so what else do you expect in return? You can take a pig and put him in a palace, he will still be a hog.

Well another one bites the dust and more parents are sent home to watch their children empty handed. How much more will Dominicans take or watch their neighbors suffer, before they feel impressed to do something for their Country and get Skerrit out of office..
This government is creating a trend, a downward spiral. The economics are not paying dividends for the poor man but the Government blinds their eyes by giving them handouts of school bags and school shoes etc..
Dominicans should demand more from this Government..the minority benefit quietly and keep their mouths shut and others just don’t have a clue..They remain in a daze till the suffering knocks them off their feet..
Let’s listen to see if Skerrit will offer to buy DAPEX and then do nothing about it..SHAME!!!

How could Skerritt and his DLP Gov’t treat such a local co. that is helping farmers in the productive sector?

How could Skerritt and his DLP Gov’t in 2016 take tax payers hard-earned $$$$$$$$ and hand over $500,000.00 to HHV Whitchurch, one of the largest supermarket on Island? The people of Dominica, whose money was taken to give Whitchurch, know nothing about the agreement, the arrangements, the deal. Under what conditions did Skerritt and his DLP Gov’t give all that money? Is it a gift, a loan, aa grant? Since when Gov’t has become a bank? How comes Whitchurch could not go to the banks or NCCU for a loan for their business?

DAPEX would never qualify for such financial assistance by Skerritt’s DLP Gov’t. But Skerritt and his DLP Gov’t changed the Laws, carved out 15 acres of our land gave all that to a foreign firm Range Development, plus our passports to sell to make millions of $$$$$$$$.

      Independent from WHAT? from CORRUPTION?

Workers at Public Works getting problems for years to receive their payments for work done. Money was taken from the workers for Social Security, yet the money did not reach DSS? But Whitchurch gets, just like that, $ 1/2 a million from our tax-payers. What wickedness? what abuses of “power” Is that what Independence all about/ Bad Governance? Just taking people’s money and do whatever you want>?

Remember, NO LAW, No Constitution could prevent me from doing……………….. Who publicly said those words.

    • To the Mashuppers
      November 3, 2016

WHOM? Independent from those neo-colonial masters? from CORRUPTION?

Workers at Public Works cannot get their pay for work done for Years. Even Social security deducted from those workers is a problem.

Skerritt went to Parliament, carved out 15 acres of our land from our Cabrits National Park and hand that to a foreign firm, Range Development. Skerritt’s DLP Gov’t, on top of that new-kind-of-slavery action, gave Range Development, a foreign firm, our passports to sell to make millions for the foreign firm to build its hotel.

38 Years of political Independence and that is the behaviour of our Black brothers and sisters, in authority, children of Black people, who were enslaved by foreign colonisers. Dominica is for sale. to the highest bidder. In fact, many believe that Dominica has been sold and Dominicans are unaware of those deals. After 38 Years of Political Independence, a new kind of slavery is engulfing Dominica, aided and abetted by greedy, selfish ones.

If you want to blame someone, blame the government. The government and its’s agencies make it hard for a business to stay in business. There is nothing attracting business’ to DA. DA is not thriving at all. Everything has been going downhill since 1979 and there are definitely reasons for that. Anyone that is employed is very lucky in DA. The attitude of too many employees is that they are doing the employer a favor, when it is just the opposite. People have the attitude that they are “owed” a job just for showing up. Attitudes have to change and people have to start coming together and helping each other as they did 20-30 years ago before anything can be expected to get better. Jobs are not coming in at the rate that they are being lost. The Chinese will be coming in though to do what work needs to be done which is being financed by China.
This company, just like many others could not make a profit in DA and has gone under. Hopefully the employees with get…

I expect some persons to write, leave politics out of it.Hahaa??.As for me I’m not at all surprised. When one looks at the state of affairs in the country this is the logical next step. The government disowned agriculture for hotel construction. The demise of agriculture was rapid and after 17years the hotel construction bit is chugging along at à snails pace.In the interim there is massive unemployment and selected people are given handouts by the red clinic. The question therefore remains which is the productive sector in the country? The business community is slowly dying,so much so that some can’t approach the commercial banks for loans, but instead the minister of finance is lender of first resort with government funds, mostly obtained from sale Of passports. To be honest the economy or what remains of it is comatose.Dominica is fast approaching the status of a failed state led by a man with an Honorary doctorate.I feel sorry for the former DAPEX employees. There is more to come

They were not paid for four months? How did they survive with no salary for those months?
How could employees not be paid for that length of time?
The government will have to establish a different strategy that employers promptly pay their employees.
Employers should have a certain amount of funds set aside to pay their employees, should they experience financial difficulty.
You cannot expect employees to work and not get paid. Have a heart.
Now, with your liquidation, your employees should be paid. It is only fair.
What good is your Labor Board/Department in this matter? How instrumental is it in also ensuring that the employees are paid including severance pay as soon as possible?
