As the countdown continues for the FIFA World Cup in Brazil the trophy arrived in Dominica on Monday.
This is part of a nine-month global tour covering 89 countries.
The trophy will be displayed at a ceremony at the Fort Young Hotel later today.
The trophy weighs 13.6 pounds, is 14.5 inches tall and is 18 carat gold.
No one in Dominica will be allowed to touch the trophy except president Charles Savarin.

what are you guys talking about, Amarijet has been landing here for years full cargo. to now say about the plane was not fully loaded is just an excuse. yes we may not get planes the same size to land here but we can definitely have incoming flight form other airlines and bigger airlines than just liat.

The ECCAA Eastern Caribbean Civil Aviation Authourity situated in Antigua makes the flight rules, not us. I am just wondering that Dominica should have Jet Blue flights to DOM from NYC and MIA also New Jersey. This should help LIAT and increase passenger arrivals in Dominica , its not easy being the only airline. Dominicans deserve choices and LIAT deserves an industry partner as Jetblue is awaays there for us.
A recommendation has been sent to JetBlue pertaining to operating to Dominica. The company stated that it would not have been a profitable destination. Dominica is just not a destination on high demands.

Amerijet has been landing*
People people people, its common sense. Amerijet having been landing in Dominica way before the airport expansion, Amerijet utilizes a BOEING 727 for operating to and from Dominica. As you can see, a MD80 was also capable of landing, so was a BOEING 737 (which is also utilized by American Airlines,US Airways,Southwest, etc.) During the last election. If these are able to land yet we’re not getting other airlines to come to Dominica, ask yourself a question….why?
Dominica is simply not a destination on demand. Do u really think a company is going to come to Dominica just for coming sake? And do you know with all unoccupied seats the government may have to subsidize? Just imagine how much would be spent each day for all these unoccupied seats. Dominica is just not a profitable destination.
People always keep crying that there should be competition but ask yourself what happened to all the others? EC express went bankrupt, winair pulled out of Dominica on numerous occasions, what happened to sisserou airways? Caribbean Star and Caribbean Sun seemed to be the ultimate competitor, well until the owner (a billionaire by the way) decided to either shut down or sell due to the big time loss from all those low fares. Do u really think he would just settle for selling a “goal mind ” just like that? What happened to RedJet?
Liat’s fares are substantial for their operational costs. If it was that easy for another airline to compete face it, there would be many other competitors or those who were there would be still standing firm.
*smh* at Dominicans, find out how much runway a plane like that would need to land and take off when fully loaded. then find out how much runway we have….
Folks, this Aircraft, the MD-80/DC-9 is NOT operated as a passenger aircraft so therefore it will be able to land, just a few Souls on board and very little cargo. And you all should know that Amerijet operates an even bigger aircraft into Dominica which is a Boeing 727 (cargo) Now that very aircraft CANT operate into Dominica as a PAX aircraft because the regulations are different. A plane full of cargo vs. a plane full of SOULS is on two completely different levels.
I’ve seen a Boeing 737 land in Dominica during last elections. But again, that was a private charter. Not regular passenger aircraft. Regulations are more strict when in comes to Passenger aircraft. At once I even saw a LAN B767 was scheduled to land in Dominica, don’t know about that one though. Found it rather strange, maybe it could have been a glitch, but hey, who knows? And folks why would LIAT go invest in such and OLD aircraft???? These “Mad Dogs”as they are called, are HELLA OLD!!!! Maybe the something from the ERJ/CRJ Family.

A DC 9 land in dominica waw!
The plane is an MD 83 with a capacity of 155 passengers…there is a smaller MD 87 with a capacity of 130 passengers which could operate out of Melville Hall flying directly to any of the international airports in Florida
I’m very disappointed and some what concerned that people are making comments about the size of the plane landing in Dominica. Let me bring some light to the blind. It’s not about the planes sizes it has more to with the logistics ie refueling and the hubs needed to facilitate those size planes. An international air port has a lot more to do with infrastructure than just planes ability to land on a particular runway…The End. (DNO you censorship police please let the people read this)

well well people,the problem at melveile hall is not the runaway,the problem is the mountain in the backdrop,in case a very large plain has to abbot landing,there is not enough clearance for climbing back up,other than that melveile hall would have been a perfect international airport,the terminal,could have extended to the river wall,the parking lot could have been across the river,easy stucture development,anyone with vision can see that.

Yes it could. Amerijet did it for years before the upgrade.

You apparently were not living in Dominica. Amerijet which is about the same size landed every Wednesday to pick up and deliver cargo before any upgrade was done at the airport. BE INFORMED before you speak
U see God is good all the time I never thought that size of plane could land in DA so why can’t we have that setup on lets say Monday and Thursday for the independence just wondering.
this very size plane landed here in 2009 as it was chartered by the DLP to bring in voters. So we have known for years that size plane could land here

The Amerijet lands here on a weekly basis, fully loaded and it is even bigger and heavier with three engines. The airport is fine for landing, the only issue is space in terms of if we have passenger planes, where they have to be processed. This is where the airport needs significant improvement.

it has the same wing span (107ft) as the Amerijet , so yeah it can land in Dominica if Liat and Seaborne invest in these jetliner aircrafts then it would be great.. its not a big plane though

I’ve been following the FIFA Trophy Tour via Facebook. It’s really interesting to see that in other countries (Caribbean included) that the public is given access to view the trophy and even have their photo taken beside it, after all, World Cup/soccer is a people’s sport. And I do understand thet prestige of the trophy, but to only have a selected few on the island to see it… That’s sad.
It is world cup FOOTBALL and not soccer as the Americans try to call it.

Now we’ve just heard on the evening DBS news that we could have our photos taken next to the cup. The deadline was 6.30. Such a missed opportunity. Our football mad son would have loved that photo of Mum and Dad next to the Jules Rimet Cup (the original name).

These size aircraft have been landing in dca even before the runway extension. Not to mention that Amerijet lands every week with a slightly larger jet full of cargo
Passenger jets need a gating system or enough space at the terminal for more than one.
Since that is not available you will have a ton of jets circling, waiting to land. That could be dangerous, and also costs the airline and airport more money.
So until the airport can park a few of this size aircraft at the gates at once it is not going to happen.
Sencond part to that would be a better taxiway if the airports gets busier.
