The fire started on Friday afternoon.

The cause is unknown, however smoke is visible from all across Roseau.

There are two fire trucks on the scene.

I would like to apologize on behalf of the Ross University Campus in Picard, we contribute so much plastic and styrofoam waste to this island’s landfill. It really is a shame. I will continue to push the school to reforming their view on recycling and waste. Hopefully, by the time I leave the island some change will have come.

Happens all over the world. I have seen it happen twice in Anguilla within a few months of each other. This link shows that it was happening in Jamaica at the same time that it was happening in Dominica.

Conspiracy theory: the land fill was set ablaze bcuz it was filled beyond capacity no more room for rubbish. Simple solution was to blaze it up!!! To say the truth solid waste has to implement a better waste disposal system. Garbage has to be compartmentalized into various structures were it can be disposed of properly. Do they even have a furnace? wonder what do they do with bio hazards? Burn it In a pit? And the amount of old tires should have been shipped eons ago. Time to get up to the international standard of proper waste disposal

Amazing, no one has yet stated, it is Friday the 13th – Black Friday.
When I awoke I remembered because it was on the News. Prior to going out I simply asked God to protect me. While getting ready to go out I completely forgot about it until I returned and remembered again today is Friday the 13th. Some people, as in the US and Canada, are suspicious of this day.
Let us hope the fire subsides and dies down and no major harm will be done including to the health.

the fire will be fueled by the methane gas produced by decomposing biological material ( the decomposing rubbish ) and guessing from how long that that dump has been there . there could be loads of methane gas trapped under the rubbish . it would have only taken a small spark or even sun magnified by a broken bottle to spark the flame but once that methane gas has been ignited it will be impossible for it to be put out it has happened in the states england and other countries allover the planet and they have put in place methods to remove the methane gas produced in landfills . was any of the gas venting or recycling methods put in place when this landfill was constructed ? o did they just dig a hole and start burying rubbish in it ? anyway my advice is best u pull back your fire fighters and let the fire burn itself out cause basically those guys are fighting a loosing battle and someone will get hurt if there is a methane explosion

    • hhhm
      March 13, 2015

there is actually a methane gas venting procedure in place. there are pipes through which the gas escapes.
….and the fire did not start at the normal refuge area. it started in the tire area.

This is madness and let’s just pray knowing how sensitive our tourism industry is , that this won’t negatively affect us though I believe it already did .

I feel the pain for the Minister of Tourism. Please investigate this well. This was deliberate to hurt us. Otherwise the Solid Waste staff should be sent home . All of them. Manager and all. This is bad. Bad. Some one is responsible for this act. All day I have been monitoring this from my office window. I cannot understand that. It’s not cool at all.

Questions! People who can afford to buy cigarette and rum don’t use them, why always the poor to adopt bad habits, because they cannot think for themselves and as a result it is costing the society. If the grass is made legal and there is money to be made from it,some company will move in and get the good substance and left you with the waste,so in any case you cannot win.

I would advise people to be careful. There is smoke and there is fumes from god knows what that is in landfill. I see some homes near by. I would evacuate these folks to be safe until smoke clears. Combustible waste is never good

Tires should not be burnt at the landfill. Or was the someone one of the workers at the landfill?

you are so ridiculous that it shames me to call myself a dominican the smoke will be blown out over the caribbean sea ALL dominicas rain comes from the atlantic ocean and moves towards the caribbean sea so nne of that polution is goign to rain back down on the island it will most likely fall far offshore on the opean caribbean sea

        March 15, 2015

You can say whatever you like but this not good for us, even it falls into the sea it will affect our marine life. I am not going to eat any titiwi again from none of our rivers on the west coast now. All of that is polluted, if not quarrying and run off from land fill, by phosphate from the Moroccan fertilizer.

It looks like some fool set the tires on fire. Very toxic emissions.

  27. Malgraysa
    March 13, 2015

There used to be habit there of burning old tires in the open without safeguards for public health. I hope that is not the case again because fires like that release the worst toxins into the air, such as carbon black which are carcinogenic in nature. In other words they cause cancer. We should stop this burning, which also takes place in private backyards and people be alerted to the danger to their health and that of their neighbors.

    • Anonymous
      March 13, 2015

Backyard burning is burning in a Residential area and is illegal but no one is enforcing it like many other laws in Dominica. It is not unusual to find police officers burning in their yards.
